The Nigerian Army has confirmed the detention of Private Christopher Emmanuel following allegations of assaulting a female vendor, identified as Doshima, in Kula, Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue State.
The disclosure was made in a statement issued on Sunday by Capt. Abdullahi Osabo, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, 401 Special Forces Brigade, Makurdi.
According to Osabo, the incident reportedly occurred on May 6 and was formally reported on May 8.
He stated that preliminary information suggested the altercation may have arisen from a disagreement over an unpaid debt, with claims that the soldier felt insulted during a phone call with the vendor.
“It is further alleged that this confrontation may have escalated into a physical altercation, which is now under investigation,” Osabo noted.
He confirmed that the soldier had been taken into custody pending the outcome of the probe.
“Private Christopher Emmanuel is currently in custody, and a thorough investigation will be conducted to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“The Nigerian Army has zero tolerance for human rights abuses and will take disciplinary action based on findings of the investigation,” he said.
Osabo further assured that the military hierarchy is committed to upholding justice and professionalism.
“The leadership of the Nigerian Army assures the general public and the victim that justice will be served in line with the military’s high standards. OPWS strongly condemns any form of indiscipline or human rights abuse by its personnel.”
He encouraged the public to report any misconduct by military personnel through appropriate channels.
“We urge members of the public to report any instances of abuse by Nigerian army personnel to the Human Rights Desk helpline instead of using social media.
“We appreciate your understanding and cooperation,” he added.
