The Nigerian Army on Saturday carried out a large-scale environmental sanitation exercise across various communities in Onitsha South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The operation, part of the Army’s Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) programme, was led by troops from the 302 Artillery Regiment (General Support) and the 14 Field Engineer Regiment, both based in Onitsha.

Commanded by Col. Adamu Muhammad of the 302 Artillery Regiment, the exercise focused on removing waste from public spaces and decongesting drainage systems, aiming to create a healthier environment and mitigate flooding risks as the rainy season intensifies.

Flagging off the exercise, Col. Muhammad stressed the need for environmental hygiene, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.

He stated, “The exercise will span 11 neighborhoods in the council area, which included: Mbonu Ojike Street, Fegge, Nimo Street, Bishop Shanahan, Sheba Street, Yahaya Street and Uzodimma Street among others.”

The Army commander further explained that the initiative aligns with the Nigerian Army’s broader goal of strengthening ties with host communities.

“We are committed to fostering a strong relationship with the public,” he said.

“A clean environment is crucial for public health and we encourage residents to regularly take time to clean their surroundings.”

Residents of the area welcomed the initiative, lauding the military’s hands-on engagement in promoting public welfare beyond their core mandate of security.
