Professor Chris Piwuna of the University of Jos has been elected as the new National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), succeeding Professor Emmanuel Osodeke.
According to The Guardian, this development makes Professor Piwuna the 14th person to occupy the position since the union’s inception.
His election was confirmed at the conclusion of ASUU’s 23rd National Delegates Congress, held recently at the University of Benin, Edo State.
The congress brought together delegates from universities across the country to elect a new leadership team.
In what was described as a highly competitive race, Professor Piwuna emerged victorious over his opponent, Professor Adamu Babayo of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi.
Professor Piwuna’s emergence as ASUU president comes at a crucial time for the Nigerian university system.
His tenure begins amidst critical conversations around university funding, the payment of Earned Academic Allowances, mass brain drain, institutional autonomy, and the overall welfare of academic staff.
Observers anticipate that his leadership will play a pivotal role in shaping the union’s dialogue with the federal government and other stakeholders.
