Former Minister of Education, Obiageli Ezekwesili, has been appointed as an Advisor to Club de Madrid, a distinguished global forum comprising democratic former Presidents and Prime Ministers.

Ezekwesili shared the news of her latest international engagement on Tuesday through a post on her X (formerly Twitter) handle, where she confirmed her acceptance of the invitation to serve on the advisory group of the organisation.

Club de Madrid, which describes itself as the “world’s largest forum of democratic former Presidents and Prime Ministers,” focuses on leveraging the collective leadership experience of its members to promote inclusive democratic practices and enhance global well-being.

Announcing her new role, Ezekwesili said “I accepted the invitation to become an Advisor to @ClubdeMadrid – Club de Madrid, ‘the world’s largest forum of democratic former Presidents and Prime Ministers, who leverage their individual and collective leadership experience and global reach to strengthen inclusive democratic practice and improve the well-being of people around the world.’”

She went on to highlight the importance of leadership in addressing contemporary global challenges, adding “As our global context becomes even more complex, the leadership vacuum delays solutions to ‘global public Bads’.”

“I therefore deeply appreciate how these former leaders of democracies around the world continue to dedicate themselves to helping solve our global challenges and amplify opportunities for cooperation. Delighted to support,” she wrote.

Club de Madrid plays a significant role in international policy development and dialogue, with a focus on democratic governance, social inclusion, and global cooperation.

Ezekwesili’s appointment is seen as another milestone in her longstanding advocacy for good governance, transparency, and civic engagement.
