The Kano State Government has declared Monday, June 2, 2025, as a public holiday to honour and mourn the tragic deaths of 22 athletes, coaches, and officials who lost their lives in a fatal road accident on their return from the recently concluded National Sports Festival in Ogun State.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who is currently performing the 2025 Hajj in Saudi Arabia, described the incident as a “dark moment” in the history of the state, emphasizing the tremendous loss of some of Kano’s most promising youth.

In a statement released on Saturday and signed by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Tofa, the governor expressed his profound grief and extended condolences to the families affected and the larger sports community.

“It is with a deeply saddened heart that I received the tragic news of the unfortunate incident which claimed the lives of 22 innocent citizens and left several others injured,” the governor said.

“On behalf of the government and the good people of Kano State, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased. We mourn with you and share in your grief.”

The statement confirmed that the victims were part of Kano’s official sports delegation to the National Sports Festival.

The deadly crash occurred along the Kano, Zaria expressway while the team was on its way back home.

“This tragedy is a collective loss that has thrown the entire state into mourning,” the statement added.

“Most of the victims were young, vibrant talents who went out to make Kano proud at a national stage.”

Governor Yusuf urged the people of Kano to stay united during this difficult period, pledging the government’s support to both the families of the deceased and the injured survivors.

“As a mark of honour and respect, His Excellency has directed that Monday, June 2, 2025, be declared a public holiday for the people of Kano to mourn and pray for the departed souls,” the statement continued.

The governor further encouraged residents across the state to use the day for reflection, prayer, and solidarity with the grieving families. He also called on Islamic clerics and members of the Muslim community, within and outside Kano, to offer special prayers for the victims.
