Just over two weeks after delivering Tottenham Hotspur’s first European trophy in over four decades, Ange Postecoglou has been sacked as manager of the North London club.
The Australian tactician, who guided Spurs to a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in Bilbao to clinch the Europa League title, saw his time at the helm come to an abrupt end on Friday, marking a dramatic turn after what seemed a high point in his tenure.
Despite the historic achievement, Tottenham’s Premier League campaign ended in disaster, with the club finishing 17th in the table, just one spot above the relegation zone, ahead of only Leicester, Ipswich, and Southampton.
Announcing the decision via their official X (formerly Twitter) account, Tottenham said:
“Following a review of performances and after significant reflection, the Club can announce that Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties.”
Postecoglou, who was appointed two years ago from Celtic, saw his tenure come to a close under the leadership of chairman Daniel Levy, who made the final call after a disappointing domestic run.
The club’s board emphasized that while the Europa League triumph was monumental, long-term stability and domestic performance remained the priority:
“The board has unanimously concluded that it is in the best interests of the club for a change to take place.”
“Whilst winning the Europa League this season ranks as one of the club’s greatest moments, we cannot base our decision on emotions aligned to this triumph.”
Postecoglou’s dismissal brings an end to an eventful chapter, where European glory was achieved but marred by 22 league defeats in 38 matches, marking Tottenham’s worst top-flight performance since the 1976-77 relegation season
