The Enugu State Police Command has detained three members of the ‘Oriokpa’ masquerade group in connection with a viral video showing an assault on innocent civilians in Nsukka.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed that the suspects were apprehended on June 23 at around 3:30 p.m., following joint efforts by police operatives and concerned members of the community.
According to the police, the suspects participated in a violent incident that occurred during the Oriokpa masquerade celebration on June 22, 2025, where multiple bystanders were physically attacked without provocation. One of the victims sustained serious injuries and required hospital treatment.
“The suspects, along with others still at large, took advantage of the ‘Oriokpa’ Masquerade celebration to assault several innocent members of the public, inflicting bodily injuries,” Ndukwe said.
Initial attempts to arrest the masqueraders were met with resistance, and they fled the scene.
However, police efforts, supported by local residents, led to the successful identification and arrest of three individuals involved.
Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Mamman Giwa, has directed a full investigation to ensure accountability and justice.
He expressed dismay over the misuse of cultural traditions for criminal activity.
“Masquerade celebrations are a sacred and symbolic aspect of our culture,” Giwa noted. “It is unacceptable for anyone to use these occasions as a pretext for causing harm or engaging in unlawful behavior.”
The Commissioner also issued a stern warning to anyone considering using cultural festivities as cover for criminal acts, adding that such actions would not be tolerated.
“The command is assuring the public that all those involved in the assault of law-abiding citizens will be brought to justice,” Ndukwe added.
