The Commissioner for Innovation, Science, and Technology in Enugu State, Dr. Lawrence Ezeh, has been honoured with the Digital Transformation Leadership Award by the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), in recognition of his pioneering role in driving digital advancement in the state and beyond.

The award was conferred during the 10th Anniversary celebration of the Faculty of Vocational and Technical Education, held at Prince Sandra Hall on the university’s campus over the weekend.

Presenting the award, the Dean of the Faculty, Professor T.C. Ogbuanya, commended Dr. Ezeh’s relentless commitment to building a digitally inclusive society and promoting tech-driven innovation in Enugu State.

He noted that within just two years in office, the commissioner has significantly contributed to shaping the state’s digital ecosystem and creating opportunities for citizens of all ages to participate in the technology space.

Prof. Ogbuanya referenced the success of the Enugu Tech Festival 2025 (ETF 1.0) an event themed “Coal to Code” which drew over 28,000 young innovators and technology enthusiasts.

He described the event as a landmark initiative that showcased Enugu’s growing prominence in Nigeria’s digital landscape.

“Dr. Ezeh’s leadership has catalyzed a remarkable digital revolution in Enugu State,” he said.

“Through his visionary efforts, the state has implemented transformative programmes that are empowering the youth and laying the groundwork for a tech-driven economy.”

Ogbuanya added that the award is not only a recognition of past accomplishments but a call to action:

“It is a charge to continue investing in the technological aspirations of our people and to inspire the next generation of innovators and leaders.”

In his acceptance speech, Dr. Ezeh expressed deep gratitude to the University of Nigeria and acknowledged the pivotal role played by Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah in setting the vision for Enugu’s tech-driven future.

“Today, we are at the frontier of a digital revolution,” Ezeh stated.

“Under the visionary leadership of Governor Peter Mbah, Enugu is rapidly emerging as a hub of innovation, not just in Nigeria, but across Africa. This award is a reflection of our collective progress.”

He reiterated the ministry’s commitment to advancing digital inclusion and equipping young people with the skills needed to thrive in the evolving global economy.

According to him, digital literacy and technical training are no longer optional but essential for economic participation in today’s world.

Highlighting ongoing initiatives, Ezeh spoke of the ministry’s strategic efforts to enhance vocational and technical education in Enugu, aligning with the governor’s “Coal to Code” vision, an agenda focused on transitioning the state from traditional industries to a knowledge-based, tech-powered economy.

The award ceremony was attended by members of the university community, faculty lecturers, students, and dignitaries who came together to celebrate the commissioner’s achievements and the state’s growing reputation as a digital innovation hub.
