A tragic accident occurred late Friday night at Chisco Park Junction in Amichi, Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State, where a tipper truck lost control and ploughed into a crowd of bystanders, leaving many feared dead.

According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Anambra, the cause and full details of the crash are still being investigated.

The agency’s spokesperson, Mrs. Margaret Onabe, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria on Saturday, stating that efforts were underway to gather complete information.

She said, “We are still gathering details about the crash,” and assured that updates would be provided once available: “I will get back to our correspondent when the information is ready.”

Eyewitnesses, however, provided harrowing accounts of the accident, which reportedly happened at about 9:30 p.m. on Friday night. They attributed the incident to a mechanical failure.

“Several persons were feared dead after a trailer driver lost control and rammed into victims along the Chisco Park Junction in Amichi,” one eyewitness recounted.

“The accident occurred within a short period of time, as the victims, who were mostly doing their usual night businesses, did not see the incoming tipper.”

The eyewitness further explained that the truck’s brakes failed, leaving the driver unable to stop the vehicle. As a result, the tipper veered off the road and into a group of unsuspecting pedestrians.

“Some of those knocked down included motorcyclists, a little girl, bystanders, and some petty traders who were seen lying lifeless on the ground,” the source said.

Reports suggest that many of the victims were either waiting for transport or conducting small-scale commercial activities when tragedy struck.

Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) footage from the scene has reportedly confirmed the sequence of events.

Authorities have yet to release an official death toll, but the community is already mourning what appears to be a devastating loss of life.

Rescue and emergency personnel were seen working through the night to assist victims and clear the wreckage.
