Two police officers attached to the Majority Leader of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Hon. Kingsley Ikoro, were shot dead on Sunday after unidentified gunmen ambushed his convoy in Okigwe, Imo State.

The tragic incident occurred when one of the convoy’s vehicles reportedly broke down during a journey through the troubled Okigwe area.

The delay forced some security personnel to stay behind while the rest of the entourage continued. It was during this vulnerable moment that the attackers struck, killing the stranded officers on the spot.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic and terrifying, noting that the gunmen took advantage of the isolation and mechanical failure to launch their attack.

Okigwe, located in the northern part of Imo State, has witnessed repeated outbreaks of violence and criminal activity in recent years.

The spokesperson for the Imo State Police Command, Henry Okoye, confirmed the incident on Monday and condemned the attack as “heinous.”

Our tactical teams have launched a full-scale manhunt. We are scouring nearby forests and communities to track down those responsible. There is no hiding place for the perpetrators,” Okoye said.

The bodies of the officers have been taken to a nearby mortuary, while authorities continue investigations into the circumstances of the ambush and hunt for those behind it.
