The Nigerian media industry was thrown into mourning on Monday following the tragic death of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a news anchor with ARISE News Channel, who was killed during an armed robbery at her home in Katampe, Abuja.

The 29-year-old broadcaster, fondly known as Sommie, was reportedly attacked in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025, during a robbery incident currently under investigation by the Nigeria Police.

In an official statement shared via ARISE News’ X (formerly Twitter) handle, the management described her as a dedicated professional and a beloved member of their newsroom.

“It is with heavy hearts that the management and staff of ARISE News Channel announce the passing of our beloved colleague, News Anchor, Reporter, and Producer, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu. Sommie tragically passed away… following an armed robbery incident in her residence… now under police investigation.”

Sommie was not only a trusted face on Nigerian television screens but also a trained lawyer, admired for her intellect, professionalism, and deep sense of compassion.

“Beyond the airwaves, Sommie was a lawyer, a professional and supportive colleague, and a friend to many,” the statement added.

Her death has sparked an outpouring of grief from across the country, with tributes pouring in from colleagues, civil society members, legal professionals, and viewers who followed her work. Many are calling for swift justice and better security measures to prevent similar tragedies.

“We extend our deepest condolences to Sommie’s parents, siblings, extended family, friends, and loved ones at this difficult time.
Sommie’s voice is now silent, but her spirit, passion, and legacy will endure,” ARISE News said.

They also urged the authorities to ensure a thorough investigation and bring those responsible to justice without delay.
