A 25-year-old robbery suspect who attempted to evade law enforcement by disguising himself in a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) uniform has been arrested by operatives of the Enugu State Police Command.
The suspect, identified as Chinecherem Ugwuagu, was intercepted on October 11, 2025, by officers attached to the Safer Highway Patrol along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway.
Upon arrest, officers recovered a cache of suspicious items including an imitation gun crafted from a body lotion container and wrapped in cloth, a stolen Carter motorcycle and clothes, a bank ATM card, as well as other personal belongings allegedly robbed from a victim earlier that day
According to a statement by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect had broken into a residence in 9th Mile, Udi Local Government Area around 8:00 am the same day.
He allegedly threatened the victim with the fake weapon and fled with the stolen items.
To avoid detection, Ugwuagu reportedly donned an NYSC uniform to create the impression he was a corps member.
However, his ruse was foiled by alert patrol officers who noticed inconsistencies and flagged him down.
“The suspect will be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of ongoing investigations,” Ndukwe stated.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, commended the officers involved for their swift and tactical response, which led to the suspect’s arrest and recovery of the exhibits.
He also reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to combating crime across the state, urging residents to remain vigilant and law-abiding.
“We continue to count on the support of citizens to provide timely and credible information that will help us ensure the safety and security of all,” the CP added.
