Aloy Ejimakor, legal counsel to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has confirmed he is in good health following his arrest in Abuja.
Ejimakor was detained on Monday during a protest organized under the banner #FreeNnamdiKanuNow, led by human rights activist and politician Omoyele Sowore.
The demonstration called for the immediate release of Kanu, who has been in detention since 2021.
In a post shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Ejimakor stated:
“I am safe & sound but still under custody at Kuje prison. The magistrate refused to listen to our submissions.”
He further claimed that the authorities bypassed multiple courts in Abuja to ensure his remand:
“He [the magistrate] insisted on remanding us till Friday and got his way.”
“For context: Keep in mind that they bypassed several magistrate courts in town and headed to this one in Kuje.”
Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the IPOB movement seeking to restore the defunct Biafra Republic, has been in detention since June 2021 after being re-arrested in Kenya and extradited to Nigeria.
Kanu was originally arrested in 2015 by the Department of State Services (DSS) and charged with treasonable felony.
He was granted bail in 2017 on health grounds, but fled Nigeria after a military raid on his residence in Abia State.
In 2022, the Court of Appeal discharged and acquitted Kanu, declaring his extradition unlawful.
However, the Federal Government appealed, and the Supreme Court overturned the ruling, sending the case back to trial.
Ejimakor has been a central figure in Kanu’s legal team and has repeatedly called for a fair trial and the enforcement of Kanu’s fundamental human rights.
The recent protest in Abuja, like others before it, sparked heightened tension.
Authorities have accused organizers of attempting to destabilize the country, while supporters insist they are defending civil rights and the rule of law.
