The Dangote Refinery has announced an ambitious expansion of its production capacity from 650,000 barrels per day (bpd) to 1.4 million bpd, positioning it to become the largest refinery in the world once completed.

When the expansion is finalized, the Lagos-based facility will surpass India’s Jamnagar Refinery, which currently holds the global record for refining capacity.

Speaking at a press conference in Lagos on Sunday, the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, said the move underscores both the company’s confidence in Nigeria’s potential and its alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s vision to transform the country into a global energy hub.

“We are more than doubling the barrels… to 1.4 million from 650,000,” Dangote told journalists.

“This will make it the largest refinery in the world, surpassing India’s Jamnagar Refinery.”

Dangote described the expansion as a strategic investment in the continent’s future.

“This expansion is about confidence in Nigeria, in Africa, and in our capacity to shape our own energy future,” he said.

He commended the Federal Government for creating an enabling environment that continues to drive private sector participation in the energy and manufacturing sectors.

According to him, policies such as the Nigeria’s First Policy, the Naira-for-Crude Policy, and the One-Stop Shop Initiative have significantly boosted industrial productivity and encouraged local refining.

Dangote also revealed that recent operational challenges at the refinery, including disruptions linked to union disputes and acts of sabotage, were swiftly resolved through government mediation.

The expansion project, he noted, would not only strengthen Nigeria’s position in the global oil market but also ensure energy security, reduce import dependence, and create thousands of additional jobs across the value chain.
