Two people have reportedly been killed in a new attack by armed assailants while returning from the market in Kwande Local Government Area, Benue State.
Eyewitnesses said the victims were ambushed on their way from Jato-Aka market to Nzaav community in Yaav Council Ward, Turan district. The attackers reportedly opened fire and inflicted severe machete injuries.
A former Kwande LGA official, Akerigba Lawrence, told DAILY GAZETTE that the incident occurred around 4 pm on Saturday.
He described finding the bodies with deep wounds, lying in pools of blood.
“This is disturbing. The victims were badly wounded. It shows that attacks are ongoing even after the invaders overran most communities except Jato-Aka in Turan land,” he said.
Kwande LGA Chairman, Yarkwan Tersua, confirmed the attack and appealed for urgent intervention, noting that residents feel helpless amid repeated violence.
He called the killings devastating and stressed that the situation poses serious challenges to community safety.
“We are calling on the federal government to swiftly come to our aid,” he said.
The Benue Police Command, through spokesperson DSP Udeme Edet, had not commented on the incident at press time, as calls and messages went unanswered.
