Abubakar Yakubu, the newly elected President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) has reportedly been arrested after being allegedly involved in a fatal car accident in Surulere, Lagos State.

Yakubu, who secured the AGN presidency by narrowly defeating veteran actress Rita Daniels with 116 votes to 113 (with three votes invalidated), was implicated in a serious accident that resulted in the death of an individual.

A veteran actor and administrator, Yakubu’s election marks a historic moment for the Guild, as he is the first President from Northern Nigeria since the AGN’s registration in 1998.

Leadership of the Guild had previously been dominated by Southern-based members, making his victory a milestone in representing Nigeria’s diverse creative industry.

Yakubu brings over 25 years of experience in the Nigerian film industry and the AGN, having served as National Secretary from 2019 to 2025.

He also held key positions such as National Vice President, National Treasurer, and Public Relations Officer, gaining deep insight into the Guild’s operations.

In addition to his administrative roles, Yakubu is a seasoned actor and producer with notable credits, including Computer Girls (2003) and St Mary (2014).

His campaign platform, “Continuity with Fresh Innovations for a Better AGN,” focused on strengthening the Guild, creating empowerment initiatives, and promoting unity among actors nationwide.

What should have been a celebratory moment for Yakubu and his supporters has been overshadowed by the alleged crash and subsequent arrest.

The incident has sparked widespread discussion on social media.

The police have not yet released an official statement regarding the circumstances of the accident or Yakubu’s current status.
