The Federal Government on Monday arraigned nine suspects arrested in connection with the deadly attack on Yelwata community in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.
The suspects were brought before Justice Joyce Abdul-Malik of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, where they were charged in relation to the killings that left scores dead and hundreds displaced.
The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), is leading the prosecution in the case.
DAILY GAZETTE learnt that the suspects are facing a 57-count charge, which is currently being read to them with the aid of an interpreter.
Earlier, the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation assured Nigerians that justice would be served, describing the arraignment as part of the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting lives and property across the country.
In a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the AGF on Media, Kamarudeen Ogundele, the government said the charges followed a painstaking investigation and collaboration among relevant security and prosecutorial agencies.
The Yelwata attack occurred in June 2025 when armed men invaded the community, killing scores of residents and forcing hundreds to flee their homes.
The incident triggered nationwide outrage, protests and renewed calls for improved security in Benue State.
Security agencies later announced the arrest of suspects linked to the attack.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who visited Benue State after the incident, had directed security agencies to intensify efforts to apprehend and prosecute those responsible for the killings.
