The Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar III, has officially announced Friday, March 20, 2026, as the date for the celebration of Eid al-Fitr in Nigeria.

The declaration followed the non-sighting of the crescent moon, which signals the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

In a statement issued by the Sultanate Council through the Wazirin Sokoto, Professor Sambo Wali Junaidu, it was confirmed that no verified reports of the Shawwal 1447AH moon were received from across the country on Wednesday.

As a result, Thursday, March 19, will mark the completion of the 30-day Ramadan fast, with Friday designated as the first day of Shawwal.

The Sultan called on Muslims nationwide to use the Eid celebration as an opportunity to pray for peace, unity, and continued progress in Nigeria.
