The Enugu State Police Command has arrested a 24-year-old man, Ugwu Desmond, for the attempted murder and rape of a pregnant woman in Affa community, Udi Local Government Area.

The incident, which occurred on the night of March 14, 2026, has been described by authorities as a deeply disturbing attack on a 30-year-old woman who was returning home from a neighbour’s residence along a quiet track road in Amokwo-Affa.

In a statement made available to DAILY GAZETTE on Sunday in Enugu by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the victim was reportedly ambushed from behind by the suspect, who was armed with a cutlass.

He allegedly forced her to the ground, attempted to strangle her, and covered her mouth to prevent her from raising alarm.

The assailant then dragged the victim into an uncompleted building, where he threatened to kill her if she resisted, before forcefully raping her and inflicting injuries.

Despite the trauma, the victim managed to report the incident to the police at about 6:15 a.m. on March 15, prompting a swift response from operatives of the Affa Police Division.

The suspect was subsequently apprehended.
Police authorities confirmed that the victim was immediately taken to a hospital for medical examination and treatment.

Investigators also processed the crime scene, recovering key exhibits, including the weapon allegedly used in the attack and clothing with suspected blood and seminal stains.

The suspect has reportedly confessed to the crime.

The Commissioner of Police, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, condemned the incident, describing it as unacceptable and assuring the public that justice will be served.

He directed a thorough investigation and stated that the suspect would be arraigned in court upon its conclusion.

Giwa further urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities promptly, noting that community awareness plays a critical role in preventing crime.
