President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone has been appointed as the new Chairperson of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Authority of Heads of State and Government.
The announcement was made by outgoing Chairperson, President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria, during the 67th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority held at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja on Sunday.
In his address, President Tinubu expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the regional body and confidence in his successor’s leadership.
“It has been a profound honor and privilege to lead this esteemed body, and I remain deeply humbled by the trust and support you have extended to me throughout my channel,” Tinubu said.
“As I now hand over the mantle of leadership to my great friend and dear brother His Excellency, President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone, the new chairman of ECOWAS Authority of States and Government, I do so with a deep sense of fulfilment and of embassy for the future of West Africa.”
President Tinubu’s tenure was marked by efforts to strengthen regional cooperation and stability amid rising political and economic challenges in West Africa.
President Bio now takes over the leadership of ECOWAS at a time when the regional bloc continues to grapple with issues such as coups, security threats, and democratic transitions across several member states.
