The Cabinet, Ákwá Mburubu, and the Council of Village Chairmen of Mburubu Ancient Kingdom are delighted to invite the public to the New Yam Festival (Iri Ji) celebrating one of their distinguished sons and leaders, High Chief Dr Engr Ozo Jerry Patrick Onuokaibe (Ozo Chinyereugo I of Mburubu Ancient Kingdom).
A joint press statement issued by Chief Onwuka Ezekwe, Cabinet Secretary; Ozo Patrick Igbudu, Secretary, Ndi Ozo Mburubu; Ozo Felix Chukwu, Ezeani of Mburubu Ancient Kingdom; Mr Anthony Ani, Coordinating Chairman, Council of Village Chairmen; and Chief Ositadimma Ezeh, Chairman, Mburubu Youth Council, revealed that the festival will take place on Saturday, November 1, 2025, at the residence of High Chief Dr Engr Jerry Patrick Onuokaibe, Uhuagba, Mburubu, starting at 11:00 am.
The celebration promises a vibrant display of Mburubu’s rich cultural heritage, featuring traditional dances, masquerade performances, live music, comedy, traditional wrestling, local delicacies, and other engaging attractions.
The New Yam Festival is not only a time to give thanks and celebrate the harvest, but also a moment to foster unity, renew community bonds, and honour Igbo traditions.
The event, organizers note, will draw dignitaries and well-wishers from across Enugu State and beyond to pay tribute to High Chief Ozo Jerry Onuokaibe, recognized as a pillar of community development and a true son of Mburubu Ancient Kingdom.
Speaking to journalists, High Chief Onuokaibe expressed gratitude to God and the people of Mburubu for the honour, emphasizing that the festival is a celebration of the kingdom’s culture and values.
He noted that the New Yam Festival remains a powerful symbol of Igbo identity, peace, and continuity.
He further described the event as an opportunity to strengthen brotherhood, promote unity, and inspire the younger generation to embrace hard work and community service.
High Chief Onuokaibe also thanked ndị Ákwá Mburubu, youth organizations, and women’s groups for their tireless efforts in preserving the kingdom’s rich heritage and encouraged everyone to continue supporting initiatives that advance development, peace, and progress in Mburubu.
