The United States has resumed surveillance missions over parts of northern Nigeria, particularly Borno State in the North-East, following a brief suspension after the Christmas airstrikes that targeted terrorist positions in the North-West.
Flight-tracking data shows that an aircraft has been conducting Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) operations around the Sambisa Forest, a known stronghold of Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters.
Before the Christmas Day strikes, similar US surveillance missions had been carried out over Sokoto, Yobe and the Lake Chad region.
Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, confirmed that the airstrikes were a joint operation between Nigeria and the United States, adding that the collaboration leaves room for further coordinated actions against terrorist groups.
