Tensions have erupted in South Africa’s Eastern Cape as protests turned violent following the installation of a Nigerian traditional leader, sparking outrage among locals.

Angry demonstrators reportedly set ablaze vehicles and buildings believed to belong to foreign nationals in KuGompo City, amid backlash over the coronation of an Igbo community leader.

The unrest was triggered by the installation of Solomon Ogbonna Eziko as “Igwe Ndigbo” on March 24, 2026, an action some local authorities and residents viewed as an affront to indigenous traditions and sovereignty.

Eziko, a Nigerian of Igbo origin, was installed by members of the Nigerian diaspora in the East London area as a cultural leader representing the Igbo community.

He is said to be active in community development, with involvement in charitable and unity-driven initiatives.

However, the Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa (NICASA) has moved to calm tensions, insisting that the title is purely cultural and carries no political authority.

In a statement, NICASA President Frank Onyekwelu clarified that the installation was not intended to challenge South Africa’s governance structures or traditional institutions.

“The Igwe Ndigbo institution is a cultural expression meant to promote unity and preserve identity among the Igbo in diaspora. It does not confer any political power,” he said.

He further stressed that no kingdom was created, noting that the ceremony was solely symbolic and aimed at strengthening community cohesion among Nigerians living in South Africa.
