Large crowds of Iranians have taken to the streets of Tehran in a display of solidarity amid rising tensions with the United States and an approaching deadline issued by President Donald Trump.
The gatherings follow a series of strong remarks by Trump, who warned of severe consequences, including the possible destruction of critical infrastructure, if Iran fails to comply with U.S. demands.
In a statement shared on his Truth Social platform, he suggested that an entire civilisation could face devastating consequences.
Videos circulating online show residents forming human chains around key installations such as bridges and power facilities, reportedly to deter potential military strikes.
The standoff is tied to Iran’s position on the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global oil transit route, which the U.S. has pressured Tehran to reopen.
However, Iranian authorities have rejected the demand, insisting that any resolution must go beyond a ceasefire to include a complete end to hostilities.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has issued a stern warning, signalling a tougher response if the U.S. crosses what it described as “red lines,” including potential disruption of oil and gas supplies.
Meanwhile, Pope Leo has condemned threats against civilians, describing them as unacceptable and urging global leaders to seek a peaceful resolution to the crisis.
Efforts to de-escalate tensions are ongoing, with Shehbaz Sharif confirming that diplomatic talks are progressing.
Pakistan has reportedly proposed a two-week extension to the U.S deadline and called for steps to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
As the deadline approaches, both Washington and Tehran are yet to issue definitive responses, although reports suggest that Iran is reviewing the proposal while the U.S has acknowledged receiving it.
