Imo University Expels Catholic Priest, 14 Other Law Students Over Exam Malpractice

No fewer than Fifteen final-year law students at Imo State University (IMSU), Owerri, have been expelled from the institution due to their purported engagement in various forms of examination malpractice.

The expelled students included a Catholic priest of the Orlu Diocese (name withheld) and a lecturer in the university’s Department of Management Sciences.

Advertorial

A source at the university said the expulsion of the students was announced before Christmas Day.

According to him, the official of the school who spearheaded the expulsion threatened to sue its management if the expulsion was not ratified.

The source, who described the expulsion as ‘very harsh” however admitted that the students were guilty as charged.

Advertorial

He insisted that the affected 15 students should not be made scapegoats as most of the students including those in other departments engaged in similar malfeasance.

He revealed that some of the affected students hired people to sit examinations for them while others used their mobile telephones during examinations.

“The Catholic priest hired a ‘mercenary’ to take an examination on his behalf. According to him, the insecurity in the Orlu axis of the state stopped him from travelling to Owerri to sit the examination.

“The Reverend Father was said to be driving to Owerri when his vehicle was shot at by unknown gunmen leading to his inability to eventually present himself at the examination hall on the fateful day.

“Also, the cabal that championed the expulsion opposed the female lecturer studying law whilst in the employ of the same university,” the source said.

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the university, Sir Ralph Njoku-Obi said he had no information on the matter yet.

Ohanaeze Condemns Platuea Killing, Insist On Restructuring, Creation Of State Police

Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze has condemned in strong terms the killing of over 150 persons in Barkin Ladi, Mangu and Bokkos local government areas of Plateau State.

In a statement made available to newsmen on Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alex Ogbonnia, the group described the attack as brutish, cruel and barbaric.

Dr. Ogbonnia who demanded the immediate restructuring of the country also called for the establishment of state police to address such violence in the country.

The Iwu Anyanwu led Ohaneze warned that if the federal government did not heed the call for restructuring and state policing system to solve the incessant loss of lives and property in various states across the country, the situation in the country may get worse.

The group however noted that the federal security architecture has proved to be ineffective in addressing the myriad of security challenges in the country.

The statement reads;
“Ohanaeze leadership qualified the killing of over 150 persons, burning of houses, indiscriminate shootings and displacing of residents as an orchestrated act of genocide.

“The President General wondered why in this modern age and civilization, our country, Nigeria is still posting the brutish, cruel and barbaric news of mass killings of such magnitude.

“The Igbo leader lamented that the federal government has refused to heed the Ohanaeze Ndigbo call for Restructuring and State Policing System as a panacea for the incessant losses of lives and property in the various states of the country.

Wike/Fubara Rift: Rivers Elders Dare Tinubu, Say 8-points Proclamation A Death Sentence, Not Implementable

Rivers State Elders and Leaders Forum has stated that the 8-points proclamations of President Ahmed Tinubu to resolve the lingering political crisis in Rivers State are not implementable.

The elders, however, faulted the Presidential Peace Proclamation, asserting that the directives are
against the Nigerian Constitution and the Rule of Law.

Advertorial

The elders, in two separate letters to President Tinubu and the Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, raised several concerns about the 8-points directives, explaining that the president does not have powers to give directives to a democratically elected Governor or impose his will on a state.

Speaking, the Chairman of the body, Rufus Ada-Goerge, a former governor of the state, while addressing members of the press, lauded the President for heeding their call to wade into the crisis rocking the state, but noted that they were at a loss as to whether Tinubu’s intervention has helped in quelling the crisis or escalating it.

Advertorial

Ada-Geroge insisted that the peace pact is in favour of the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike and to the detriment of the governor and the interest of the state.

He said: “The eight-point resolution or directive asked for the reinstatement of Commissioners who willfully resigned, and the 27 former legislators who in all clear conscience and by legal implication jumped boat and got themselves dismissed from the affairs of the Assembly, should be reinstated and remunerated, smacks of a sense of political irresponsibility, lack of sensitivity to the laws of the land and due process.

“Given the foregoing, it is obviously evident that Governor Siminialayi Fubara, the Chief Executive Officer of Rivers State, was coerced into submitting to your premeditated action plan even when it is well known that Mr President does not possess such powers to give directives to a democratically elected Governor or impose his will on the State.

“As far as we are concerned, that meeting did not happen and those directives are not implementable because to do so will be acting against the constitution and the rule of law.”

While reacting to Fubara’s comment in his statewide Christmas broadcast on December 25 wherein the governor noted that the Presidential Peace Proclamation is not as bad as portrayed, Ada-George insisted that the proclamation is a death sentence because it breaches all legal and constitutional rights the sitting governor swore to protect.

He urged the Governor not to place too much premium on the assurances of detractors, rather be guided by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria which he swore to uphold.

Ada-George said: “We accept your humility as shown in your Christmas Day Broadcast of 25″ December 2023, to the good people of Rivers State. However, we the people of Rivers state do not see any peace in the so-called “Mr. President’s Peace Proclamation.

“Peace can only be practised in a germane, truthful and just society. In this case, the environment in which the peace was brokered showed no sensitivity to the people’s security, political and social interest,

“Mr. Governor Sir, you stated categorically that you are a principal participant in the entire saga and the Presidential Peace Proclamation is not as bad as being portrayed by those genuinely opposed to it. That proclamation is actually a death sentence as it breaches all legal and constitutional rights you swore to uphold. Mr. Governor, you also stated in your broadcast that the document offers a way and means of peace.”

“While as a threatre commander, he helped the country to roll back the expansion of Boko Haram and recovered a lot communities and council areas that fall into the hands of the bandits,” he said

The former COAS thanked Ezugwu for coming out with lots of initiatives as well as conceptualizing and building anti-landmine vehicles and landmine detactors to protect Nigerian troops from landmines planted by the enemies.

Earlier, Gov. Peter Mbah of Enugu State, appreciated Ezugwu for doing the state proud in his exceptional military career under the Nigerian Army.

Mbah, represented by his deputy, Chief Oliver Ossai, noted that Ezugwu served with integrity and remained a top officer retiring with a clean and respected record in the Nigerian Army.

“As a state, we want our people to emulate your forthrightness and humility to bring out the best for the common good of humanity,” he said.

Expantiating on his sermon at the Church Thanksgiving Service at St Mary’s Catholic Church, Ukehe; Monsignor Joseph Atado urged Nigerians to turn to God, noting “no gun can stop insecurity”.

“Nigeria’s insecurity can also be solved in one week or a month if the politicians who benefiting from the misfortune can stop interfering with the security operations across the country,” Atado said.

Lamenting the level of insecurity and massacre of defenseless residents of Plateau Communities on Christmas Eve, the cleric said that unless the Lord protects the city, the soldiers, the police labour in vein.

“So, our message is for our people to cry out to God. Nigeria belongs to God and God created Nigeria. He can take care of us as his creatures,” he said.

Michigan Supreme Court Rules In Favor Of Trump, Reject Ballot Disqualification Bid

Michigan’s supreme court has refused to hear an appeal by voters in the US state to disqualify Donald Trump from next year’s presidential primary.

They sought to invoke a clause in the US Constitution, barring anyone who has engaged in insurrection, over Mr Trump’s role in the 2021 Capitol riots.

Advertorial

The decision comes days after Colorado became the first state to rule that Mr Trump was not an eligible candidate.

Michigan is considered a battleground state in the 2024 general election.

Pro-democracy advocacy group Free Speech for People filed the lawsuit in September.

But unlike in Colorado, the bid failed early on in the process, and the appeal to the supreme court was seen as having little chance of success.

Advertorial

Courts in Michigan rejected the case on procedural grounds and did not examine the question of whether 6 January 2021 was an insurrection and whether Mr Trump played a part in it.

Supreme Court Justice, Elizabeth Welch explained that Michigan’s laws were different from Colorado’s.

The appellants “have identified no analogous provision in the Michigan Election Law that requires someone seeking the office of President of the United States to attest to their legal qualification to hold the office”, she wrote.

Trump’s legal defeat may turn into political gold
Colorado’s 4-3 supreme court decision last week, which refers only to the state primary on 5 March, does not stop Mr Trump from running in other states.

It is the first-ever use of Section 3 of the US Constitution’s 14th Amendment to disqualify a presidential candidate. The measure was ratified after the American Civil War to block secessionists from returning to previous government roles once southern states rejoined the Union.

The Colorado decision has been put on hold pending an appeal in January. Similar attempts to kick Mr Trump off the ballot in New Hampshire and Minnesota have failed.

Plateau Killings: Bandits Are Steps Ahead Of Govt – Sultan Releases Statement

The Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar III, has condemned the Christmas Eve killings in 20 communities in Mangu, Bokkos, Mangu and Barkin Ladi Local Government Areas of Plateau State.

He faulted security agencies for their failure in intelligence gathering in which they could not avert the heinous crime leading to the death of over 100 people.

Abubakar called on the government and security agencies to be more proactive and scale up its intelligence gathering techniques because “the bandits and terrorists are always a step ahead.”

The Sultan, who is also the President, Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs, stated this in a goodwill message at the closing of the 80th National Islamic Vacation Course which held on Wednesday at the Air Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium, Bauchi.

He said: “We have problems of insecurity. Just a couple of days back, there was this clash in Plateau (State) where over 100 plus lives were lost. Why do we keep on having these clashes, why do we keep on having these deaths caused by ourselves? A couple of weeks back, the Tudun Biri issue (in Kdauna State) is still fresh in our minds, and now the one in Plateau.

“We always condemn such things but after condemning such activities by these bandits and criminals, what are the roles of the governments who are supposed to protect our lives and property?

Advertorial

“Why can’t we be proactive and stop such attacks before they happen? What happened to our intelligence gathering mechanisms. Can anybody tell me that nobody knew that such attacks were coming up?

“In various places, whether it is Sokoto, Birni Kebbi or in Kaduna or anywhere. Have we lost our sense of gathering information to avert any of such heinous crimes? We must ask our governments to up the game because these bandits are always a step ahead.”

Abubakar also warned against politicising insecurity in the country saying this was dangerous and the worst way to go.

“For some of us who were opportune of serving in the military, we know the activities of the security agencies, so we keep on asking, what really is happening? Things are politicised and that’s the worst way to go when you politicise insecurity.

“We’re all in one big country where we have poverty. Yes, Muslims, Christians and even people who don’t have religion, go to the same market, they buy the same foodstuffs, they enter the same vehicles, pay the same fares, so it is not the issue of religion. Let’s not say that anybody is planning this against Christians or against Muslims. No, it is the issue of leadership.

“Let’s have confidence in the leadership that within the next few weeks, months and year, something will change. Let’s keep on having hope and we should not lose hope. But we must keep calling on our leaders to rise up to the occasion. Things are not right and when things are not right, anything can happen,”

“As Muslims, we believe in the Almighty Allah who does what he wants to do and when he wants to do it. So let’s continue with our prayers.

“But as we pray, let’s put pressure on our leaders do the right thing, let’s not leave our leaders with their own problems and faults. We must all take this leadership as one opportunity for all of us to be good to one another and let our country be a much better country. The challenges are there and there are so problems but we have to face those challenges.”
