I Have No Rift With Governor Alia – SGF, Akume

Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, has stated that there is no rift between him and Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia.

Speaking at the stakeholders meeting held at the government house in Makurdi, the former governor also said that no one who won the election on the platform of the APC in the state will be allowed to run away with the party’s mandate.

This is apparently a reference to the manner in which the immediate past governor, Samuel Ortom, won the election on the platform of the APC in 2015 but later moved to the Peoples Democratic Party in 2018.

The SGF was represented by one of the elders of the party in the state, Simon Shango.

Senator Akume said that the party was determined to ensure peace and unity in the state.

Speaking on the purported rift between him and the governor, Senator Akume said that he remains a faithful servant and ambassador of the state at the federal level.

According to him, “The SGF said he is your (governor) eyes in Abuja. He appreciates the work you have done so far. In a situation like this, there must be problems, but they are being solved.

“The party is determined to ensure unity of purpose among the members, and he (Akume) emphasised that no one will go away with our mandate anymore, and we will do our best to ensure that the marriage continues.

He added that “there is no issue with the Governor, and they have been relating well”.

Speaking at the meeting, Governor Alia appreciated the party for expressing confidence in him and promised that he would struggle hard to restore all the glories of the state.

INEC Using Delay Tactics To Frustrate Us From Challenging Imo Guber Outcome, Blocking Access To CTC – Labour Party

The Imo State chapter of the Labour Party on Saturday raised the alarm that the Independent National Electoral Commission was denying its legal team access to the certified true copy of documents used for the governorship election in the state.

In a statement issued by the spokesperson to the LP governorship candidate in the election, Chibuikem Diala, the party alleged that the electoral umpire was deploring the delay tactics to frustrate its plans of challenging the outcome of the poll at the election petitions tribunal.

It therefore called on the chairman of INEC, Mahmood Yakubu, to prevail on the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Sylvia Agu, to release the CTC to the legal team of the LP candidate, Nathan Achonu.

Advertorial

The statement read in part, “Our notice has been drawn to mischievous plans by Imo State INEC under Prof Sylvia Agu to deny our legal team access to certified true copies of documents used for the November 11 governorship election in Imo State as required by law. This is after an official request has been made by our solicitors to the State INEC office duly acknowledged and received on November 15, 2023.

“It is important at this stage to alert the national chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission and the security agencies of these devious delay tactics which may be to further deny our party and the candidate of the Labour Party in the November 11 election justice.”

While describing the development as unacceptable, it urged INEC to “do the needful immediately as time is of the essence”.

It added, “We only hope that this delay is not a decoy by Imo State INEC and agents of the APC-led government to perfect their rigging by tampering with sensitive materials at the INEC office.

“This strategy to deny the people of Imo State the opportunity to have a leader of their choice will not work as we call on INEC to do the needful and stop taking Imolites for granted.

“While we wait for INEC to speedily do the needful, we further assure the caretaker governor in Imo State to enjoy his ‘Certificate of Return’ only for a moment as he will soon return it to the rightful owner.”

‘Democracy Is Gone In Nigeria’ – NNPP Rejects Appeal Court Judgment Sacking Kano Governor

The Chairman, Kano State chapter of the New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, Hashimu Dungurawa has kicked against the judgment delivered by the Appeal Court against Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

The judgment delivered at the Appeal Court in Abuja on Friday had sacked Governor Yusuf on the ground that he was not a valid or card carrying member of the party.

Advertorial

Dungurawa in an interview said the verdict shows Democracy is gradually coming to an end in the country if the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC recognized Yusuf as the party candidate, declared him winner of the election and handed him certificate of return but the judiciary will do otherwise.

When asked whether Governor Yusuf is a card carrying member of the party, Dungurawa said, “It is INEC that is in better position to tell you that, because this man purchase his form from INEC, he filled and return it back. And the same INEC declared him winner after polling the highest number of total vote and was given the certificate of return.

“With this verdict, I will say sorry for Nigerian democracy. Because there is no how somebody go to his community, campaign and people gave him their mandate and will get a popular vote but at the end of the day, the judges will do something else.

“You see in democracy, it is a game of number. There is no how people will go and cast their votes in millions and then a judge will just come overnight and cancel the votes and then another comes and say he has no powers to cancel the votes then go ahead to say you don’t have a card carrying member of the party. We are talking about membership, if that is a case, how did INEC recognize the person that contest under the platform and say is the winner after scoring so and so number of votes. And went ahead to give him certificate of return. And even the judges sworn him into the office. And now they are coming to tell us another story. This is shameful in democracy. And how can you do such in a state like Kano where won 26 out of 40 seats in the state assembly, we won 18 out of 24 members of house of representatives, which story do you tell the people. That you want to apply some technical issues.

“With this kind of attitudes and actions by our judges, I am very sure democracy is coming to an end. Because nobody will go and waste his time to vote for anybody in 2027 because we know at the end of the day even if you win there are some judges that will deny you that right. And that is why we are saying no to the judgment and appealing to our people to remain calm and be law abiding. And we are going to take it to the next level where I think we have people of high integrity. And justice will be done.

“Because if this continue to happen in our courts, there is a danger.

“We urge the judges to fear God and know that there is hereafter. They should not monetize or sell their integrity,” Dungurawa however stated.

While disclosing that efforts were in top gear to work our modalities on clearing the backlog of all gratuity arrears, Oyebanji said his administration would also consider the demand for monthly payment of gratuity to Pensioners.

He said, “On all outstanding issues, we are working so hard to ensure that we crack those nuts; I’m aware of all the arrears of pensions and check-off dues and many things that are still due to our people.

“We intend to come to a point where we reach an appreciable number of pensioners, and you know that a committee has been put in place, and very soon, discussion will be concluded on it. We are trying to get the best deal for our people. What will gladden my heart is to sit down and see that we are doing N20 billion, and if feasible, it will get to a larger number.

“Also, on what the labour leaders refer to as wage award, I will not rush and promise you something that I will start and won’t be able to sustain. If I want applause, I can award it too, and when it is no longer sustainable, we start dragging it.

“That is not my style because I promised to deal with you in truth. So, we are looking at the numbers, they’re working out the scenarios, and whatever we promise we will do for you is sure it is something we can carry. I don’t want to do something; I will stop mid-way.”

Meanwhile, speaking at the event, the Head of Service, Sunday Komolafe, commended the Governor on the drive to ensure careful implementation of his administration’s cardinal programmes and policies to impact positively on the lives of the people, saying the various disbursements he had made for pensioners in the state laid credence to his resolve to make life meaningful and worthwhile for the people.

Allegation That Judges Collected $5m Bribe To Sack Me Baseless – Plateau gov

Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, on Friday, described as baseless and defamatory allegations that some judges collected the sum of five million dollars as a bribe to sack him from his position.

Advertorial

Some section of the media had on Thursday accused the former Governor of Plateau state and Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Lalong of giving $5 million to three justices of the Appeal Court including Justices Elfrieda Williams-Dawodu, Akams, and Waziri to sack Mutfwang of the Peoples Democratic Party as governor and declare the All Progressives Congress Candidate, Nentawe Yiltwatda as the winner of the 2023 governorship poll in Plateau State.

The report which was circulated in social media also said that the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu had met with Lalong after a lawyers conference in Abuja on Thursday and had mandated him to deliver the bribe to the judges.

However, Governor Mutwang in a statement on Friday condemned the publication and distanced himself from the narrative.

The statement which was signed by Mutwang’s Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere said, “Plateau State Governor, Barrister Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has strongly condemned the baseless and defamatory allegations circulated by certain individuals, accusing judges of receiving a $5 million bribe for the nullification of his victory.

“Governor Mutfwang vehemently condemned the publication and attributed it to the deliberate actions of his detractors aimed at sowing discord between him and the esteemed judges and other constituted authorities.”

Expressing his deep concern over the matter, Governor Mutfwang demanded thorough investigations by security agencies to identify and apprehend those responsible for the libelous publication.

“He (Governor Mutfwang) emphasised the need to ensure that these individuals face the full consequences of the law with a view to setting a precedent that discourages similar misconduct.

“Governor Mutfwang unequivocally distanced himself from the false narrative, dismissing it as mere fabrications crafted by individuals who are being manipulated as pawns by the opposition party in Plateau State.

“The Governor noted that the latest move is an attempt to tarnish the image of the PDP Government in the state, and pointed out that such malicious actions will not deter his commitment and confidence in the Judiciary.

“Reaffirming his unwavering support for the judiciary, Governor Mutfwang warned those disparaging the justices and respected leaders, to desist from their destructive activities immediately or face the severe consequences of their actions” the statement added.
