Okonjo-Iweala Warns World Leaders On Israel-Hamas War

The Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has warned world leaders to quickly end the conflict between Israel and Hamas militants or risk a “really big impact” on global trade.

Okonjo-Iweala said this on Thursday at the International Monetary Fund and World Bank annual meetings in Marrakesh, Morocco, stressing that the Middle East violence could add to factors strangulating trade growth.

Advertorial

The WTO boss factors like higher interest rates, a strained Chinese property market and Russia’s war in Ukraine have already weakened global trade flows, warning that the war could escalate to the Middle East region.

“We hope this ends soon and it’s contained. Our biggest fear is if it widens, because that will then have a really big impact on trade,” she said. “Everybody’s on eggshells and hoping for the best.”

“There’s uncertainty about whether this is going to spread further to the whole region, which could impact very much on global economic growth. We hope that all the violence will end… because it does create this uncertainty. It’s another dark cloud on the horizon.”

The Geneva-based trade body last week halved its growth forecast for global goods trade this year, citing persistent inflation, higher interest rates, the slowing Chinese economy and the war in Ukraine.

‘Your Apology Accepted’ – Obaseki Tells Deputy

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, says he has accepted the public apology tendered by his deputy, Philip Shaibu.

Obaseki, however, said Shaibu’s alleged unwarranted provocation caused him severe personal discomfort.

He however said he has accepted the public apology made by Shaibu and that as a person of faith, he was under obligation to accept the apology.

Advertorial

Shaibu and Obaseki fell out as a result of Shaibu’s ambition to contest the 2024 governorship election and succeed his principal.

The rift resulted in Obaseki relocating the deputy governor’s office out of the government house, disband his media crew and also removed him as the supervisory head of the revenue generation agencies in the state.

Shaibu had, however, begged Obaseki last week to forgive him if he had offended him unknowingly.

Obaseki in a letter titled, “Re: Public Apology by Shaibu,” said he hoped that the public apology expressed by his deputy was genuine.

The letter read in part,

“I have noted the public apology made by the deputy governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu. This apology followed an aberrant behaviour that contradicts what the people of Edo State stand for.

“To name a few, the deputy governor needlessly filed unfounded petitions in the Nigerian courts restraining me, the State House of Assembly and Security agencies from a non-existent impeachment process, followed by repeated breaches of protocol; unwarranted and unprovoked attacks in the media on my person and the State Government.”

Obaseki said the development provided an impression of crises that had been precarious and distasteful to Edo people in the state and across the world.

He said though these unwarranted provocations caused him severe personal discomfort, “but, as a person of faith, I am under obligation to accept this apology because as they say, to err is human, to forgive is divine.”

“In good faith, I trust that the public apology as expressed by the Deputy Governor is genuine and followed by contrite steps to improve his conflict resolution skills. I also enjoin the Deputy Governor to guide his proxies to act in accordance with his piety.

“It is my sincere hope and that of my other colleagues in government and all well-meaning Edo people that these rhetorics will be put to an end forthwith to enable this administration finish strong and deliver the dividends of democracy to the greatest number of Edo people over this final twelve months,” Obaseki added.

Normalcy has returned at the Federal Ministry of Works, Abuja, after some members of staff staged a peaceful protest on Thursday to the decision of the Minister, David Umahi to lock them out of their offices for late coming.

The protesters who were heard chanting “Umahi must go,” expressed displeasure over Umahi’s action which they said did not take into cognisance the fact that they reside in areas outside the city centre.

Advertorial

One of the members of staff who spoke to reporters on condition of anonymity for fear of retribution said, “Most of us live in areas as far as Suleja in Niger State, some in Gwagwalada, Kefi, Abaji, Kuje Kwali, Kaduna road.

“Matters have been compounded with the fuel subsidy removal. Most times, we have to join some of our friends who have cars to come to work because of the huge transportation cost.

“Most of us don’t earn up to N80,000 as salary monthly, how do we feed our families and meet other obligations? We expect the Minister to show a better understanding of the situation in the country instead of trying to run this place like Ebonyi State.”

However, some senior officials of the ministry and the union leaders have intervened which restored calm.

When our correspondent visited the Ministry’s headquarters situated in Mabushi, normal activities appeared to have returned but some of the staff were seen in clusters discussing the situation.

It was gathered that the Permanent Secretary is planning a meeting with directors and other departmental heads to find a middle ground to avoid a repeat of the incident.

Group Calls On Ohaneze Ndigbo To Make Release Of Nnamdi Kanu ‘Top On Their Agenda’

Igboezue International Association of Nigeria and the Diaspora, IIAND, on Thursday told the South East Governors to make the release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPoB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, top on their agenda for the Friday South East Security and Economic Summit if they want to achieved peace and meaningful security in the zone.

National President of IIAND, Chief Pius Okoye who spoke on behalf of the group also told them to ensure that the Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, led Ohanaeze Ndigbo, not only participates in the summit but accepts and implements their views for peace to reign in South East.

Advertorial

Addressing newsmen in Onitsha, Chief Okoye, expressed sadness over the insecurity crisis in South East Geopolitical Zone, urging some South East Governor whose actions, utterances and provocative attitudes of playing politics in Abuja with the faith of the people of their state and South East in general thereby fueling the crisis, to retrace their steps by discouraging their Abuja politics mentality.

IIAND also urged the participants in the summit to look into the alleged molestation of the people of South East at the Military and Police Check points across South East states, saying that the behaviour of the security men to motorist and commuter on South East road is not what obtains in other zones of the federation.

According to IIAND, “For South East Governors and other participants particularly Ohaneze Nsigbo, to achieve meaningful peace, security, political, social and economic development in the South East Security and Economic Summit, coming up on Friday in Oweri, the Imo State capital, they must make the release of long incarcerate IPoB’s leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, top on their agenda. Anything short of that will not ensure peace and security in South East.

“It is good that the summit is going to hold in Imo State, which seem to be the worst hit by the insecurity, this is also going to be an opportunity to call some South East Governor to order, they should look themselves on their faces and tell themselves the truth because some are not behaving well, some feel that constant visit to Abuja and making provocative utterances against the people of their states and the youths, is what makes them loyal to the powers that be in Abuja. The Governors who engages in the act knows themselves and they should change.

“The summit should ensure that the Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu led Ohanaeze Ndigbo is not only carried along in the meeting, but should ensure that their views and suggestions are carried and implemented to the letters. Ohanaeze Ndigbo has done well under Chief Iwuanyanwu, the Igbo dignity and lost pride is gradually being returned because of some steps they have taken just like we are doing in IIAND.

“We will also like the summit to look into several complaints we have received concerning the molestation of Igbo sons and daughters at the military and Police check points across South East state. That must stop. The idea of making commuters alight from the vehicles they are traveling in, to cross Police, Army, Navy checkpoints is dehumanizing, unacceptable and must stop.

“We have also received the reports that many South East sons and daughter have been killed just because they were labelled IPOB Commanders and members, this must stop, and the people responsible for this criminal act of labelling opponents IPOB members and commanders just to kill them must refrain from this callous and criminal behaviour.

“We gathered that the act of accusation or labelling opponents in dispute IPoB Commander and member through writing petitions or oral complaints to Police, Army and Department of States Services, DSS, officials is the easiest way to elimination opponents in disputes in South East, the summit must take seriously this allegation and ensure that such families that have been victims of this malicious allegations gets justice for their now dead loved ones.

“While not blaming the security agents for such false allegations given to them, we advise that when such allegations are made through oral or written complaints or petitions, professionalism demands that they are investigated and if such people are found to have broken the law of the land, they should be taken to court instead of killing or torturing them to death. Such complaints have been brought to our table by relations of the victims, the summit must look into it, is very serious matter now.”

Akwa-Ibom Tribunal Affirms Governor Eno’s Victory

Akwa Ibom State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Uyo on Thursday upheld the election of Pastor Umo Eno of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP as the governor of the state.

The three-member panel of justiceschaired by Justice Adekunle Adeleye, dismissed the Petition jointly filed by the All Progressives Congress,(APC)and its candidate, Obong Akan Udofia, challenging the electoral victory of Umo Eno for lack of Merit.

Advertorial

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared Umo Eno winner of the election of the March 18, 2023 election.

Eno polled a total of 356, 346 votes to defeat Senator Akpan of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) and Obong Akan Udofia of the APC who scored 136, 262 votes and 129, 602 votes respectively.

But dissatisfied with the result declared by INEC, Akan Udofia and his party had approached the Tribunal seeking the disqualification of governor Eno on the grounds that he had presented forged documents to INEC, and alleged failure to score the majority Lawful votes in the Governorship election.

The petitioners also alleged that Eno who was joined as the 2nd Respondent in the electoral matter having been convicted by an Abuja Magistrate Court, therefore was not qualified to contest for the said election.

But in its judgement on Thursday, the Tribunal panel held that the petitioners failed to prove their allegations of non-compliance with the electoral Act 2022 in the conduct of the governorship election.

The Justice Adeleye’s panel also held that the Magistrate court in its judgement, nullified its earlier conviction of Pastor Umo Eno and that once a judgement is nullified, it ceases to exist.

The Tribunal further held that regarding the issue of qualifications, that the Supreme Court had already determined that Pastor Eno (2nd Respondent) 1981 and 1983 WAEC certificates he submitted to INEC are genuine.

It accordingly expunged the evidence by the petitioners’ subpoenaed witness, an acclaimed Interpol officer, who came to tender a report on the 2nd respondent’s WAEC results.

The panel unanimously disagreed with the petitioners on the legality of the setting aside of judgement by the same Magistrate, stressing: “It is not the duty of the tribunal to determine if the decision of the magistrate court to upturn its own judgment was justified. That falls under the jurisdiction of the Abuja High Court.”

Also the Tribunal dismissed the grounds of petition filed by Udofia challenging the eligibility of Senator Bassey Akpan of the YPP, who scored 136, 262 votes to come second in the election.

The tribunal insisted that the APC and Udofia
claim that Senator Albert was not qualified to be fielded by YPP having already vied for same office in the PDP was baseless, as it is a party matter to determine who emerges its candidate.

The judgement which lasted for almost 4hours was read by Justice Kadi Usman Sikudu.

Reacting to the judgement, the Attorney-General of Akwa Ibom State, and one of the Counsel’s to governor Eno, Essien Udom (SAN) thanked the Court for once again affirming the election of the governor.

“The petition has been dismissed. It was a very, very thorough judgement you could not have expected anything better. All the issues were thoroughly addressed. We are happy”, he asserted.

Attempt To Stage Another Coup In Burkina Faso Uncovered – Junta

The junta in Burkina Faso, which toppled a military regime to gain power, has announced that there was a coup attempt.

In a statement, the junta said an attempt by some army officers to seize power and plunge the country into chaos was thwarted.

“The dark intention of attacking the institutions of the Republic and plunging our country in chaos… investigations will help unmask the instigators of this plot.”

Advertorial

“Officers and other alleged actors involved in this attempt at destabilisation have been arrested and others are actively sought,” read the statement from Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouedraogo, spokesman for the regime.

The military government said it would seek to shed all possible light on this plot, adding that it regretted “that officers whose oath is to defend their homeland have strayed into an undertaking of this nature”.

It said while four people had been detained, two were on the run.

The statement added that the regime launched investigation based on “credible allegations about a plot against state security implicating officers.”

“We regret that officers whose oath is to defend their homeland have strayed into an undertaking of this nature, which aims to hinder the Burkinabe people’s march for sovereignty and total liberation from the terrorist hordes trying to enslave them.”

The junta came to power after two military coups last year, triggered in part by a worsening insurgency by armed groups linked to al Qaeda and Islamic State that has destabilised Burkina Faso and its neighbours.

Captain Ibrahim Traoré, the junta leader, seized power on September 30, 2022, the country’s second coup in eight months.

From 2020 till date, there have been seven coups across Africa.
