Advertising Regulatory Agency Orders Immediate Removal Of “All Eyes On The Judiciary” Billboards, Suspends 2 Senior Workers

The Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) has ordered that all “All Eyes on the Judiciary” advertisements placed on some billboards across the country should be removed immediately.

The agency gave the directive in a circular released by its Director-General, Dr. Olalekan Fadolapo, explaining that the billboards breached some vital advertisement guidelines and indicted the Advertising Standards Panel of the Council for their approval.

According to the circular, the billboards are capable of causing public unrest and it is inappropriate to allow them to continue to be a subject of public discourse while petitions on presidential elections are still before the court of law.

The statement reads: “The attention of the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) has been drawn to the “All Eyes on the Judiciary” advertisements exposed on some billboards across the country.

“The concepts exposed were not approved by the Advertising Standards Panel, hence, the Council has directed that all the materials being exposed be brought down immediately and the violators sanctioned.

“The Advertising Standards Panel of the Council also erred in the approval of one of the concepts as the advertisement failed vetting guidelines on the following grounds:

“The cause forming the central theme of the campaign in the advertisement is a matter pending before the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal. Hence, it’s jus pendis.

“A matter being jus pendis and awaiting judicial pronouncement is, by virtue of the Nigerian legal system, precluded from being a subject of public statement, debate, discussion, advertisement etc.

“The advertisement is controversial and capable of instigating public unrest and breach of public peace.

“The advertisement is considered a blackmail against the Nigerian Judiciary, the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal and particularly the Honourable Justices of the Tribunal who are expected to discharge their judicial functions without fear or favour over a matter that is currently jus pendis.”

The statement added that the agency had therefore dissolved the Advertising Standards Panel (ASP) and ordered the immediate suspension of the Director and Deputy Director (Regulation) for the same cause.

The statement added: “The Advertising Standards Panel (ASP) Secretariat failing to diligently exercise its function as the gatekeeper of advertising, advertisement and marketing communications is hereby dissolved.

“The council will set up a committee to investigate the circumstances leading to the erroneous approval of one of the concepts of the inappropriate advert and the breach of the vetting guidelines. Consequently, the Director and Deputy Director, Regulations have also been suspended. The suspension is to enable unprejudiced investigation of the issue.”

Hardship: Your Govt Has Crashed Our Expectations, APC Chieftain Writes Tinubu

A former National Vice Chairman (North West) of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Salihu Mohammed Lukman, has written an open letter to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, listing what he described as disturbing signals in the early months of his administration.

In the letter titled, “Disturbing Signals: Open Letter to President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu” on Monday in Abuja, Lukman accused the President of imposing another Muslim-Muslim scenario on the party after winning the February 25 polls.

He listed other “disturbing signals” to include the current exchange rate (dollar to naira), fuel pump price and his choice of ministers among others.

He said the endorsement of Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and Ajibola Bashiru who are both Muslims as APC’s national chairman and secretary is a disturbing signal, saying it is generating tension among party members and other Nigerians.

He expressed dismay that while Bashiru from Osun State had replaced Iyiola Omisore who resigned as national secretary from the same state, Tinubu had not allowed a former governor of Nasarawa State, Umaru Tanko Al-Makura who is also loyal to him or any other APC stalwart from Nasarawa State to replace Adamu who resigned as national chairman but preferred endorsing another Muslim-Muslim “ticket.”

The former APC vice chairman also questioned the criteria in the appointment of ministers, saying with the developments, Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda might not be implemented.

The letter reads in part, “Your Excellency, I find it very compelling to send this open letter to you because there are disturbing signals, which if not averted could produce bigger problems and irreversibly destroy our electoral viability as a party.

“Without attempting to question your authority and commitment to the wellbeing of Nigeria as a nation, within the short period since May 29, 2023 when you assumed office, there are decisions you took, which are very disturbing to many of us who are loyal party members.

“Rather than even attempting to respond to that challenge and demonstrate that truly we only invoked the Muslim-Muslim ticket as an electoral strategy, in a very insensitive manner we imposed another Muslim-Muslim scenario in the party with national chairman and national secretary both Muslims.

“And we want to claim we are a progressive party? What is the brand of our progressive politics? Certainly, not the one which Nigerians expect, which endears us to citizens on account of which Nigerians gave us the mandate to manage the affairs of government since 2015. As it is, both as party members and as Nigerians, our expectation from your government has crashed.”

The family said his burial had been delayed by the refusal of the government to release his corpse to them.

Two traders of the market including Odoh were shot dead on July 27, 2023, by security operatives deployed to the market by Governor Peter Mbah to stop aggrieved traders from protesting against the sealing of their shops and businesses by the government for not coming to market on Mondays on allegation of observing ‘illegal sit-at-home’ order.

The traders had taken to the street to march against the sealing of shops in the market by the authorities of the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority (ECTDA), as part of the enforcement of an order by the government for workers and traders to resist the regime of sit-at-home.

Since the incident, neither the state government nor the police has sent a team to visit the families of the traders killed during the protest. Also, there is no report that the police officers who killed the protesters have been arrested or held accountable.

Late Odoh had recently returned from Dubai and decided to establish his business at the Ogbete Main Market. His corpse was deposited at a mortuary in Enugu on the orders of the state government.

Leicester City’s Iheanacho Under Scrutiny From Supporters, Competing Clubs

Leicester City’s Kelechi Iheanacho is under scrutiny from supporters and competing clubs.

The Nigeria international striker has been stellar for the King Power club in recent times.

From his impeccable partnership with legendary forward Jamie Vardy, they were the Foxes most productive pairing up front probably in their history.

Advertorial

On top of that, the Foxes’ man is versatile stylistically, and a clear goal threat in every fixture.

But ‘Seniorman’ has only one year left on his current deal and Leicester have failed to give the starting spot to Iheanacho.

In response to questions regarding the future of Iheanacho, Italian head coach Enzo Maresca pointed towards the position of the club, himself and the player.

“This is one of the things is on the table. It’s one of the things we need to discuss with the player. Most of the time we think about the club but we need to see the desire of the player… player, club, and manager. It’s one of the things we need to do soon to clarify the situation,” Maresca said.

Clearly, Leicester themselves want to discuss extending the players stay at the club.

However, to Maresca, the situation remains unclear as the player is yet to show a desire either to stay with the Foxes or to find the exit door.

“Kele played against Coventry, very good. He played the other day, goal, assist. It’s one of the things I said from day one that to realise something important… but we also need to know the desire of the player.”
