BREAKING: Tinubu Rejects Arbitrary Increase Of Fees, Approve Buses For SUGs Nationwide

President Bola Tinubu has approved provision of buses to the students’ bodies of all universities, polytechnics and colleges of education across the country.

Dele Alake, Special Adviser to the President on Special Duties, Communications & Strategy, disclosed this in a statement on Monday.

He said the development was in furtherance of the President’s desire to ease the burden of the fuel subsidy removal on students of higher institutions of learning,

“The desire of the President is to see that students can access their campuses without much difficulty as a result of higher transportation costs.

“The provision of the buses will also remove the burden of additional cost of daily commuting on parents and guardians.

“In line with his promise to ensure no Nigerian student abandons his or her educational pursuits as a result of lack of money and economic circumstances of their parents, President Tinubu has also approved the removal of all restrictions on the students’ loan to make it available to any student or household that may desire it,” the statement read

Alake added that the president also warned authorities of all federal institutions against “arbitrary” increase of fees.

“Similarly, President Tinubu has directed the authorities in all Federal Institutions of higher learning to avoid arbitrary increase in sundry fees payable and where possible defer further increase so that parents and students don’t face too many difficulties.”

“While it is important to reiterate that President Tinubu has directed release of over 200,000 Metric Tonnes of grains to families in 36 states and Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, the government is working to ensure that vulnerable students can also benefit from conditional cash transfers and food distribution.

“The Federal Government salutes the courage, wisdom and partnership of Nigerian Students as our country navigates this challenging time.

“President Tinubu will continue to prioritise education and the needs of the students, improve welfare of teaching and non-academic staff and invest in infrastructure to make our institutions of higher learning become more globally competitive.”

IPOB Accuses Simon Ekpa Of Working For DSS

Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has accused its factional leader, Mr Simon Ekpa of working for the Department of States Services (DSS) to bring down the group.

Publicity Secretary of the group, Mr Emma Powerful stated this in a statement issued on Monday and made available to newsmen in Awka, Anambra state.

According to the statement, Ekpa was in 2016 trained by DSS and sent into IPOB as a mole.

Finland based separatist leader has since the arrest of IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu in 2021, assumed leadership of IPOB, but later declared himself as the Prime Minister of Biafra Government in Exile.

He has been responsible for the declaration of civil disobedience order, also known as sit-at-home in the south eastern region.

Ekpa has also threatened many people who disobey his order, and it is believed to be responsible for the violence that some hoodlums unleash on innocent people during sit-at-home days in South East.

IPOB has constantly dissociated itself from his activities, but Ekpa insists that his actions are geared towards ensuring speedy release of Kanu.

Powerful said, “Ekpa was prior to this period groomed by the Nigerian DSS to usurp the leadership of IPOB in 2016 but that evil plan failed woefully.

“Simon Ekpa was the same person as the faceless Okwudili that DSS created in 2016 as the new leader of IPOB, when our leader was in detention in 2016. Prior to this time, Simon was a hater of Ndigbo and particularly IPOB in Finland. IPOB members in Finland will attest to this.

“Simon Ekpa is the exclusive project of Nigerian DSS, to create a situation of unrest and hostilities in the South East which the end product was to destroy the image of IPOB.”

According to the statement, if it was not so, the federal government would have taken certain steps to arrest his activities in the zone.

It stated, “Why is Nigeria government not making any effort to diplomatically engage Finnish Government about visible hostilities of Ekpa? Why did Nigeria suppress the Legal Investigation of Ekpa in Finland, also his court cases in Nigeria?”

Ekpa

According to the statement, if the federal government was serious about ending Ekpa’s rascality in the zone, it would have ordered DSS to allow Kanu address his followers through his social media channels.

It also called on its members to discountenance Ekpa, while also challenging him to dish orders to IPOB members without using Kanu’s name, and see if anyone would listen to him.

HARDSHIP: Tinubu To Address Nigerians Tonight

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will make a broadcast to the nation at 7 pm on Monday, July 31, 2023.

Dele Alake, presidential spokesman, announced this in a statement on Monday morning.

“Television, radio stations and other electronic media outlets are enjoined to hook up to the network services of the Nigerian Television Authority and Radio Nigeria for the broadcast,” the statement read.

It is unclear what the broadcast is about but it comes at a time when the masses are complaining of nationwide hardship as a result of the removal of fuel subsidy, leading to hike in petrol price.

The president has repeatedly appealed for calm, saying his government is working hard to ensure that Nigerians live comfortably.

Tinubu attributed the current state to labour room pain, saying the gains are on the way.

His address comes on the eve of the nationwide protest of organised labour and amid the strike by the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) who rejected the 25% increment in basic salary recently announced by the federal government.

In a communique issued Saturday after its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Lagos, the association said , it ” vehemently rejects the paltry 25% increment in the basic salary of doctors as well as the accouterment allowance”.

The association said that its earlier demand is for full restoration of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure to its right value as at the time of the approval of the structure in 2009.

The communique was signed by the president of the association, Dr Orji Emeka Innocent, secretary-general Dr Chikezie Kelechi, and publicity and social secretary Dr Umar Musa.

NARD said it would continue the ongoing nationwide total and indefinite strike action until reasonable progress is made by the government to address her demands as contained in the ultimatum issued to the federal government earlier this month.

It demanded the immediate release of the circular on the One-for-One policy for the replacement of exited clinical workers for implementation, saying it could not continue to watch her members lose their lives and break down under the weight of work overload occasioned by massive depletion of clinical staff due to brain drain.

Dortmund Down Man United In Vegas Friendly

Borussia Dortmund punished Manchester United’s defensive lapses on Sunday as the English Premier League giants wrapped up their North American tour with a 3-2 defeat to the Bundesliga side in Las Vegas.

A second-half strike by Dortmund substitute Youssoufa Moukoko proved the difference in an entertaining clash at the Allegiant Stadium, home of the NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders.

United manager Erik ten Hag named a virtual reserve team to start, leaving the likes of Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes and new signing Mason Mount on the bench.

Yet United’s makeshift starting XI were more than a match for Dortmund in the first half, dominating for long periods before Diogo Dalot handed the Red Devils the lead on 24 minutes with a long-range strike.

But Dortmund turned the game on its head in the closing minutes of the first half, with two goals in a minute from Netherlands international forward Donyell Malen.

The first came when United’s defense failed to close down Karim Adeyemi’s burst down the right.

Despite the attention of a cluster of United defenders, Adeyemi was able to square for Malen, who hooked in from close range.

Malen grabbed his second a minute later, this time seizing on a United howler when Victor Lindelof lost possession inside the area trying to pass out from the back.

United were lucky not to go 3-1 down in the opening minutes of the second half, when another defensive slip, this time by Harry Maguire, allowed Sebastien Haller a shot on goal.

United goalkeeper Andre Onana saved and then watched in relief as Adeyemi blasted the follow-up wide with the goal gaping.

United did get back on level terms in the 52nd minute when Brazilian forward Antony swept home a low shot from inside the area after a botched clearance by Dortmund veteran Mats Hummels.

Ten Hag rang in the changes with 30 minutes remaining, with Rashford instantly providing more of an attacking threat.

But it was Dortmund who scored the decisive goal, with veteran Marco Reus working a clever opening to set up Moukoko for the winner.

Enugu PDP Stakeholders Intensify Lobby For Appointments

Cronies of the incumbent Governor of Enugu state have apparently become beautiful brides for several PDP members lobbying for one political appointment or the other.

The government house has turned into a Mecca of some sort since after the announcement of 15 Commissioner Designates by Governor Peter Mbah.

Some members of the State Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic party, chieftains and unsuccessful candidates of the party as well as those that invested everything at their disposal to campaign for the party, are all equally involved in deploying both conventional and unorthodox means to market their intentions.

Advertorial

Many of the PDP Stakeholders in Enugu have also stopped at nothing in using media advertorials/visibility, networking all perceived persons with links to the governor, visitations, attending social functions and spearheading favourable protests to attract the attention of the governor.

Lobbyists for political appointments are desperately visiting government house in such an unrelenting manner to ensure that their efforts pay-off as they hope for second batch of the commissioner nominees.

Accordingly, every local government area should have a Commissioner Designate representing the council.

The lobbying has really taken the front burner since after the announcement of the two appointments by Governor Mbah, not minding the general apprehension and fixation of many PDP supporters that he may likely be sacked by Court owing to the ongoing litigations instituted at the governorship Election Petitions Tribunal by Hon. Barr. Chijioke Edeoga of the Labour Party.

Pressure from the lobbyists has been mounting from stakeholders in the 17 Local Government council areas of the states to fill the vacant statutory commissioner slots, positions of special assistants, and various boards of the state government’s ministries, parastatals and agencies.

The lobbying has become so intense maybe because many of the lobbyists were products of campaign promises.

As Enugu PDP Stakeholders await Mbah’s second batch of the commissioner nominees, political pundits predict he may not make further appointment.

Jonathan Shouldn’t Be Allowed To Nominate Minister, He Worked Against Tinubu – Campaign Council

The Bayelsa State chapter of the Tinubu/Shettima Independent Campaign Council (ICC) has assured members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state that former President Goodluck Jonathan will not be allowed to nominate Bayelsa’s candidate for a ministerial slot.

The ICC said it was inconceivable for Jonathan, who is one of the leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to nominate the state’s representative in the cabinet of President Bola Tinubu, a member of the APC.

The ICC’s reaction followed the tension generated in the party by reports suggesting that Jonathan was making attempts to hijack Bayelsa’s ministerial slot.

The report rattled APC stakeholders in the state including members of the APC Elders’ Forum, who vehemently condemned the move.

The ICC in a statement signed in Yenagoa on Sunday by its Director (Administration), Chief Joseph Fafi, appealed to angry party members to calm down.

Fafi, who described President Tinubu as a thorough person and rewarder of loyalty, insisted that there was no way such injustice and unfairness would be allowed under the current President.

Fafi, a former Chairman of APC in Bayelsa, said: “At this point, everyone needs to calm down. Tinubu is a thorough person and is known to always reward loyalty.

“It is inconceivable to think that Jonathan would nominate a minister from Bayelsa State. While he is an elder statesman and we accord him that regard, but as drivers of Tinubu’s presidential campaign in Bayelsa state under the leadership of Engr Preye Aganaba, we know those who supported and those who worked against Tinubu.

“It was open and incontestable. Giving him the right to produce a minister in this government isn’t among the privileges Tinubu is ready to offer Jonathan.”

Fafi said President Tinubu understood that APC Bayelsa was preparing for a major election and would make appointments to strengthen the party and not empower any PDP mole.

He said: “For us, Bayelsans, this is not just any year. There’s some significance to the fact that this is an election year. So appointments coming in must be precise and tactical. Tinubu knows better than to give the ministerial slot to a PDP mole who would only try to truncate APC’s chances of upstaging the PDP and Governor Douye Diri.

“So while the rumours come with some flesh, because, obviously a few PDP chieftains are scurrying around nocturnally to fly certain persons, who campaigned heavily for Atiku, the rumours in reality will remain what they are: rumours.

“We are optimistic Tinubu will appoint a core, seasoned and well-qualified party person who would be a huge positive in our gubernatorial elections come November 11th. We urge our teeming supporters and entire campaign structure in the ICC, members of the APC and Bayelsans, in general, to relax for the right thing will be done, and equity will take center stage.”

BREAKING: Supreme Court Loses Judge

One of the popular Supreme Court Justices, Justice Chima Centus (CC) Nweze has been reported dead.

It was gathered that Justice Nwaeze died on Sunday at 64.

However, the Supreme Court is yet to confirm his death at the time of filing this report.

Justice Nwaeze became very popular following his dissenting judgment in 2020 which declared Emeka Ihedioha of the People Democratic Party winner of the 2019 Governorship election in Imo State against the decision of majority of the panel.

He was also the Justice among the panel who refused Peoples Democratic Party Atiku Abubakar’s request to inspect the Independent National Electoral Commission’s server while challenging President Muhammadu Buhari’s victory in 2019.

Also, in a split judgement of three-against-two, Nweze delivered the controversial judgement of the Supreme Court which declared then Senate President, Ahmad Lawan as the authentic candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, for Yobe North Senatorial District for the 25 February general election.

Justice Nweze, a native of Obollo, Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State, was born on September 25, 1958.

In 2014, Former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration approved the recommendation of the National Judicial Council (NJC) to appoint Nweze to the supreme court.

Atiku Rejects Economist Intelligence Unit Report On Presidential Election

Former vice president and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the last elections, Atiku Abubakar, has described the report of the Economist Intelligence Unit on the election in Nigeria as an embarrassment.

Atiku in a statement by his Media Adviser, Mr Paul Ibe, said the report was like a merchant purchased by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to confuse Nigerians and warned the unit to respect Nigerians judiciary and its judges.

The statement said in part, “What is also obvious in the report is that it is a merchant purchased by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to confuse the country in an uphill task to defend the sham election of February 25, which only retained the ruling party in office.”

“It is disappointing that the EIU would condescend to ballot laundering for the ruling party in the most populous Black country.

“While we wish to express our intention to apply cautious restraint in responding to the EIU on this disgraceful outing, let this be considered as a stern warning to the body to respect Nigeria’s democracy and the institution of our judiciary, and that next time, they should be more circumspect before they jump on any trade by barter jaundiced reports about Nigeria.”

Atiku also accused the ruling party of going cap in hand “begging for legitimacy at all impossible places,” adding that, “a government that goes around to buy anything at sight to award legitimacy unto itself leaves much to the imagination of the people.

“We therefore consider it a breach of due process anything that is being done outside the walls of the court that seeks to make short circuited testimony about the outcome of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal,” he added.
