Nicki Minaj Makes History As First Female Rapper To Address The United Nations

American rap star Onika Maraj-Petty, widely known as Nicki Minaj, has become the first female rapper to speak at a United Nations forum.

Minaj delivered her remarks on Tuesday at an event hosted in New York by the United States Mission to the United Nations.

Her speech, broadcast on the Mission’s official YouTube channel, focused on rising attacks against Christians in Nigeria and in other parts of the world.

In her address, Minaj said:

“In far too many places, including Nigeria, Christians are being targeted, driven from their homes and killed. Churches have been burned, families torn apart, and entire communities forced to live in constant fear simply because of how they pray.”

Calling for global attention, she emphasized that the situation demands urgent action, stressing that the issue is not confined to Nigeria alone but spans multiple countries.

Minaj clarified that her advocacy should not be seen as divisive:

“Protecting Christians in Nigeria is not about taking sides. It is about uniting humanity. Nigeria is a beautiful nation with rich faith traditions, and many beautiful Barbz that I can’t wait to see.”

Addressing the repeated attacks on places of worship, she added:

“When a church, mosque, or any place of worship is destroyed, everyone’s heart should break a little. And the very foundation of the United Nations, built to uphold global peace and security, should shake.”

Minaj also applauded the interfaith and peacebuilding advocates present at the event, noting that their work inspires her hope for stronger solidarity in promoting religious freedom worldwide.

Her speech coincided with recent comments by U.S President Donald Trump, who had warned of possible military action against terrorist groups in Nigeria if the attacks on Christians continued.

The U.S. recently listed Nigeria among countries of particular concern.

Earlier that same Tuesday, Nigerian police confirmed an attack on a church in Kwara State that left two worshippers dead.

Meanwhile, 25 schoolgirls were abducted in Kebbi State, though two later escaped. A Muslim teacher and a security guard were also killed in the incident.

Also speaking at the UN forum, U.S. Congressman Mike Waltz commended Minaj for using her global influence to highlight the ongoing violence against Christians in Nigeria.

In a related development, President Bola Tinubu said on Wednesday that the abduction of the Kebbi schoolgirls and the killing of Brigadier General Musa Uba and other soldiers in Borno State had left him deeply saddened.

“Their families, and the families of the kidnapped schoolgirls, are in my prayers,” Tinubu said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

“As Commander-in-Chief, I am depressed by the tragic loss of our soldiers on active duty. May God comfort the families of Brigadier General Musa Uba and other fallen heroes.”

ISWAP Leader Sentenced To 20 Years In Prison For Terrorism

Hussaini Ismaila, a key commander of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), has been convicted of terrorism and sentenced to 20 years in prison by a Federal High Court in Abuja.

The Department of State Services (DSS) had prosecuted him for multiple terrorist offenses.

Justice Emeka Nwite delivered the judgment after Ismaila, also known as Mai Tangaran, pleaded guilty to a four-count terrorism charge.

The charges included his role as coordinator of attacks on the Police Headquarters in Bompai, the Mobile Police Base on Kabuga Road, Pharm Centre Police Station, and Angwa Uku Police Station in Kano State, among other locations.

These attacks in 2012 left many injured.

Arrested on August 31, 2017, in Tsamiyya Babba Village, Gezewa LGA, Kano State, Ismaila was initially arraigned on a four-count charge under the Terrorism Prevention Amendment Act, 2013.

His trial experienced delays due to appeals and a trial-within-trial to determine the voluntariness of his extra-judicial statements.

During the trial, the prosecution presented five witnesses, including two DSS officials and two eyewitnesses to the attacks.

Originally pleading not guilty, Ismaila changed his plea to guilty after the testimony of the fifth prosecution witness.

His lawyer, P. B. Onijah of the Legal Aid Council (LAC), requested leniency, stating that Ismaila was remorseful and wished to avoid wasting court time.

Justice Nwite sentenced Ismaila to 15 years for the first count and 20 years each for counts two, three, and four, ordering the sentences to run concurrently, effective from his arrest date, August 31, 2017.

The court also instructed the Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service to confine Ismaila in any prison of their choice.

The judge further mandated that Ismaila undergo rehabilitation and deradicalization after serving his sentence before being reintegrated into society.

I’m Depressed Over Kebbi Schoolgirls’ Abduction, Killing Of Army General – Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has expressed profound sadness over the recent abduction of 25 schoolgirls in Kebbi State and the killing of Brigadier General Musa Uba along with other soldiers in Borno State.

Speaking on Wednesday, Tinubu offered his prayers to the families affected by these tragic events.

“The families of the kidnapped girls, and the families of our fallen soldiers, are in my prayers,” he said in a post on X.

“As Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, I am deeply grieved by the loss of lives of our officers on active duty. May God provide comfort to the families of Brigadier General Musa Uba and other fallen heroes.”

The abduction occurred early Monday morning when gunmen attacked the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Kebbi State, killing one staff member and abducting 25 students from their hostel.

Police reports indicate that the attackers, armed with sophisticated weapons, fired sporadically before breaching the school’s perimeter.

This incident adds to a long history of school abductions in Nigeria, including the notorious Chibok schoolgirls kidnapping over a decade ago, which drew global attention.

In a related development, two days before the Kebbi attack, operatives of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) ambushed a Nigerian military unit, which included members of the Civilian Joint Task Force.

Brigadier General Uba and four soldiers were captured and subsequently killed by the terrorists, despite earlier military claims that the officers had survived the attack.

The terror group later released photographs confirming the killings.

In response, President Tinubu directed security agencies to act urgently to rescue the kidnapped students.

“I am fully aware of the recent rise in violent extremism across certain regions of the country, and I have instructed our security forces to respond decisively and swiftly,” he said.

He also called on Nigerian communities to assist security forces by sharing information that could protect lives and prevent further attacks.

“Those who threaten the safety of our citizens will face the full force of the Nigerian state,” the President warned.

The late senator, popularly known as Ideke, had reportedly been battling diabetes for several years.

He recently returned to Nigeria from the United Kingdom and was receiving treatment at a private hospital in Lagos when his condition deteriorated.

Family insiders revealed that doctors were forced to amputate one of his legs in an attempt to save his life after complications from diabetes worsened.

Tinubu Cancels G20, AU–EU Trips Over Worsening Insecurity, Awaits Reports On Kebbi, Kwara Attacks

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has suspended his planned trips to Johannesburg, South Africa, and Luanda, Angola, in response to the escalating security crises in parts of the country, including the abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State and an armed attack on worshippers in Eruku, Kwara State.

The President was expected to depart Abuja on Wednesday for the 20th G20 Leaders’ Summit in South Africa and later attend the 7th AU–EU Summit in Angola.

However, according to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu has put both engagements on hold pending full security briefings.

In reaction to the Kwara State government’s request for federal support, President Tinubu has ordered the deployment of additional security personnel to Eruku and the wider Ekiti Local Government Area to prevent further attacks.

He also directed the police to immediately pursue the gunmen responsible for the assault on Christ Apostolic Church members.

Vice President Kashim Shettima has been dispatched to Kebbi State to visit the families of the abducted students and receive ground-level assessments from security agencies and local authorities.

The President is now awaiting Shettima’s report, as well as briefings from the police and the Department of State Services (DSS) on both incidents.

The statement emphasised Tinubu’s renewed order to security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue the kidnapped schoolgirls and ensure their safe return.

Police Seal PDP National Secretariat As Factional Crisis Escalates

The Nigeria Police Force has shut down the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Secretariat, Wadata Plaza, Abuja, following a tense standoff between rival factions that attempted to take control of the party headquarters on Wednesday morning.

The closure comes less than 24 hours after heightened tension was recorded around the complex, where supporters of the two opposing blocs, led by Senator Samuel Anyanwu and former Minister Tanimu Turaki, mobilised for separate meetings in a bid to assert dominance over the party structure.

A video obtained by DAILY GAZETTE showed police operatives mounting heavy barricades and rolls of barbed wire across the entrance to prevent access to the building.

Security officials were also seen stationed across adjoining streets to forestall any outbreak of violence.

Sources said the decision to seal the secretariat was taken to avert a potential clash, after reports indicated that both factions were mobilising supporters and musicians to the venue early Wednesday, causing panic among nearby residents and businesses.

Earlier, DAILY GAZETTE reported a massive deployment of police officers, operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), and civil defence personnel around Zone 5, where the secretariat is located.

Supporters of both groups were seen chanting, dancing, and displaying banners as they attempted to occupy strategic positions near the plaza.

The developing crisis follows renewed internal battles over party leadership and control, with both factions planning parallel meetings at the same venue.

The police are yet to issue an official statement on when the secretariat will be reopened.

Kwankwaso Decries Worsening Insecurity, Mourns Slain Brigadier-General

Former Kano State governor and leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has raised alarm over the renewed surge in insecurity across the country, urging the Federal Government to respond decisively as violent attacks and kidnappings intensify in several states.

In a statement shared on X, Kwankwaso warned that Nigeria is entering a dangerous phase of instability, pointing to a string of recent incidents that reveal deep cracks in the nation’s security architecture.

He condemned the abduction of 25 schoolgirls in Kebbi State, describing it as a painful reminder of past mass kidnappings that traumatised the country and attracted global outcry.

According to him, the attack mirrors a growing trend in northern Nigeria, where criminal groups increasingly target students for ransom or leverage.

Kwankwaso also lamented the killing of Brigadier-General M. Uba during an ambush by terrorists in Borno State, calling it one of the most devastating blows to Nigeria’s counterterrorism efforts in recent years.

He said the death of such a senior military officer signalled a serious intelligence lapse and called for an immediate probe to restore confidence within the armed forces.

He further cited ongoing mass abductions in Zamfara State, where armed groups continue to raid rural communities, as evidence that criminal networks remain firmly entrenched despite repeated military operations and negotiations by local governments.

The former defence minister added that the uptick in attacks in Shanono and Ghari local government areas of Kano State proves that insecurity is now spreading beyond historically troubled regions into areas once considered relatively stable.

While he commended the Kano State Government for providing operational vehicles to security agencies, Kwankwaso stressed that such efforts would be insufficient without stronger federal intervention.

He reminded the government of its constitutional responsibility to protect citizens, insisting that the recent incidents reflect “clear setbacks in the fight against insecurity.”

Kwankwaso reiterated the need for increased investment in the armed forces and enhanced support for the Nigeria Police Force, noting that many frontline units are overstretched, under-equipped, and lack timely intelligence needed to prevent or effectively respond to attacks.

With Nigeria confronting multiple security challenges, from jihadist insurgents in the northeast to bandit groups in the northwest and separatist movements in the southeast, Kwankwaso warned that continued failures could further erode public trust and deepen the suffering of already vulnerable communities.

He urged the government to act swiftly and decisively to stem the rising wave of violence.
