‘No Person Shall Be Removed From The US Without An Opportunity To Be Heard’ – Court Blocks Trump’s Deportation Policy

A U.S judge has ruled to block the Trump administration’s efforts to expand a policy that allows for the rapid deportation of migrants without a court hearing, dealing a setback to President Trump’s broader plan for mass deportations.

The policy in question, known as “expedited removal,” was originally applied to migrants detained near the U.S-Mexico border who had recently crossed into the country.

However, earlier this year, the Trump administration sought to expand this process nationwide, applying it to migrants who had been in the U.S. for up to two years.

On Friday, U.S. District Judge Jia Cobb issued an injunction preventing the expanded use of the procedure, citing concerns that it could lead to wrongful deportations without adequate due process.

Cobb’s ruling highlighted the risk that people who had been in the U.S for more than two years could be unfairly removed without the opportunity to challenge their deportation in court.

“Unlike those typically subject to expedited removal, migrants detained at or near the border shortly after entry, the individuals now being targeted by this policy have long since entered the country,” Cobb wrote in a 48-page opinion.

The judge also criticized the government’s legal argument, which suggested that migrants who entered the U.S illegally would not be entitled to due process under the Fifth Amendment, claiming that they should simply accept whatever protection Congress offers.

Cobb rejected this argument, warning that such a stance could threaten the rights of all individuals, not just noncitizens.

This ruling comes in the wake of a lawsuit filed by Make The Road New York, a migrant rights organization that has been a vocal opponent of the administration’s mass deportation efforts.

While the judge did not rule on the constitutionality of the expedited removal process itself, she made it clear that this specific expansion exceeded the limits of what the law permits.

The ruling has significant implications for Trump’s mass deportation strategy, which has faced repeated legal challenges, particularly with respect to the rights of individuals to contest their deportation.

Trump, who is seeking a return to the White House, has made clear his intention to deport millions of undocumented migrants.

However, the president’s deportation plans have been hampered by multiple court decisions, particularly over concerns about the constitutional rights of those affected.

In her opinion, Judge Cobb also referenced the U.S Constitution, which guarantees that “no person shall be removed from the United States without the opportunity, at some time, to be heard.”

37 Year-Old American Sentenced To Life For Murder Of Nigerian Boxer Isaiah Olugbemi

Nicholas Giroux, a 37-year-old man, has been sentenced to life imprisonment plus an additional 20 years for the murder of Nigerian-American boxer, Isaiah Olugbemi, in Anne Arundel County, Maryland.

Giroux was sentenced on Friday by Judge Richard Trunnell of the Anne Arundel County Circuit Court after pleading guilty to charges of first-degree murder and using a firearm in a violent crime.

His sentences will be served consecutively in the state’s Division of Corrections.

Olugbemi, a 27-year-old rising star in amateur boxing and father, was fatally shot by Giroux on June 17, 2024, in the 500 block of Meadowmist Way, Odenton.

According to police reports, Olugbemi was found with multiple gunshot wounds and later died at the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.

The autopsy confirmed that the cause of death was homicide by gunfire.

Surveillance footage captured the harrowing moment when Giroux approached Olugbemi and shot him multiple times, before firing three more rounds as Olugbemi fell.

Police recovered 9mm casings from the scene.

Investigators revealed that Giroux had previously confronted Olugbemi and a neighbor during a cookout two weeks earlier, where he had displayed a handgun but did not point it at anyone.

Following the murder, Giroux confessed to the crime during questioning and led authorities to the firearm he used.

Anne Colt Leitess, the State’s Attorney, described the murder as “cruel and senseless,” emphasizing that Olugbemi had a bright future ahead in boxing.

She stated, “Mr. Olugbemi was a father and an emerging talent in the boxing world. The defendant’s utter lack of remorse is deeply disturbing. This sentence brings some measure of justice to his family and friends.”

The case was prosecuted by Assistant State’s Attorney Carolynn Grammas, with homicide detectives from the Anne Arundel County Police Department conducting the investigation.

Rivers LG Polls: Emergency Rule Could End Soon, Says Wike After Casting His Vote

In March 2025, President Bola Tinubu imposed a state of emergency in Rivers State following prolonged tensions between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.

This resulted in the suspension of Fubara, his deputy, and the state assembly members.

However, Wike now believes that the conduct of the local government elections in the state marks a significant step toward lifting the emergency rule.

Speaking after casting his vote on Saturday in Rumepirikom, Ward 9, Unit 007, Obio/Akpo LGA, Wike expressed confidence that the elections would pave the way for normal governance to resume.

He stated, “Now that these elections have been held, the path is clear for the emergency rule to be lifted. This means the local government and state government can return to their regular roles and we can move forward.”

The former governor, who is currently the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), added, “The state of emergency will expire on September 18, and with that, both the state governor and the assembly will return to their duties. The grassroots government will be restored.”

He also praised the peaceful nature of the election, dismissing concerns about voter apathy or violence.

“People are actively participating in the elections, and there have been no reports of violence or ballot box snatching. The electoral materials are in place, and voters are casting their ballots peacefully.”

Although Wike acknowledged a lower voter turnout than expected, he was optimistic that more people would come out as the day progressed.

“The elections have been peaceful and successful. We’re glad to see this process go forward without major disruptions,” he said.

The elections took place six months after the Supreme Court invalidated a previous vote organized by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC).

In March, as political tensions between Wike and Fubara escalated, President Tinubu declared a state of emergency.

This move was aimed at restoring order after several failed peace negotiations.

Following the emergency declaration, Tinubu appointed Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd) as the sole administrator for the state, replacing Fubara, his deputy, and the assembly for a six-month term.

During this time, Wike, Fubara, and key Rivers Assembly members met with President Tinubu in Abuja.

The outcome of that meeting led to the belief that the political crisis in the state had been resolved, setting the stage for the current election and potential end to the emergency rule.

Man Arrested For Murdering Neighbor, Hiding Body In Water Tank

A man, Eze Amadi, has been arrested by police for allegedly murdering his 28-year-old neighbor, Ifeanyi Otu and hiding his body inside a water drum in Kajola, Odigbo local government area of Ondo State.

Reports reveal that the victim was brutally tortured before being concealed in the water tank, likely in an attempt to dispose of the body under cover of darkness.

However, Amadi’s plan was thwarted when local residents apprehended him as he was trying to remove the body, which had been wrapped in foam, using a motorcycle.

Sources indicated that both the victim’s father, Michael Otu, and the suspect, Eze Amadi, lived in the same neighborhood, but the reason for the violent altercation between the two men remains unclear.

“I was at home when I received the shocking news that my son’s body had been found in a water drum,” said the grieving father.

“When I arrived at the scene, I saw my son’s lifeless body. I was told that the suspect was caught while trying to get rid of the body. This tragedy has left me devastated, and I demand justice for my son.”

Ondo State Police spokesman, Ayanlade, confirmed the arrest and said investigations are underway to fully understand the circumstances of the crime.

“The suspect is in our custody, and we are working diligently to uncover the full details of what happened. After the investigation is completed, he will be charged in court,” Ayanlade stated.

He also urged the community to remain calm and assured them that the law would take its course.

2027: Jonathan’s Political Relevance In Doubt – APC

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has addressed the growing buzz about former President Goodluck Jonathan’s potential return to the presidential race in 2027.

Despite being urged by his supporters to contest again after his loss in the 2025 elections, the APC remains skeptical about his ability to unseat incumbent President Bola Tinubu.

In a statement issued on Friday, APC spokesman Mr. Seye Oladejo acknowledged Jonathan’s key role in ensuring a peaceful democratic transition in 2015, which earned him both local and international commendation.

However, Oladejo argued that Nigeria has moved beyond an era defined by nostalgia and sentiment, and that the nation now requires bold and forward-thinking leadership.

He stated: “Good luck alone is not a governance strategy. The future demands strong leadership capable of addressing the current and upcoming challenges.”

Oladejo further criticized Jonathan’s administration (2010-2015), pointing out the structural weaknesses that remain, such as rampant corruption, insecurity, and stagnant economic growth.

He reminded Nigerians that sentimentalism cannot drive necessary reforms, nor can emotional ties fix Nigeria’s challenges like power generation, insecurity, or the decay of the education sector.

Addressing the constitutional issues surrounding Jonathan’s potential candidacy, Oladejo warned that a bid for a third term would invite legal battles and political instability, which Nigeria can ill afford at a time when decisive leadership is required to tackle national issues.

Moreover, the APC believes that Jonathan’s recent engagements with multiple political parties raise doubts about his commitment and vision for the country.

Oladejo noted Jonathan’s involvement with the APC and his absence from the PDP’s rebuilding efforts, suggesting that these actions cast uncertainty on his political intentions.

The APC emphasized its commitment to providing Nigeria with “visionary governance” focused on integrity, innovation, and progress. “The future of Nigeria does not lie in recycled leadership but in fresh, capable leaders who reflect the aspirations of a young, dynamic population,” Oladejo concluded.

The APC urged Nigerians to reject the emotional pull of past leaders and instead focus on electing transformative, accountable leadership as the 2027 elections draw nearer.

Voter Apathy Mar Rivers LG Polls

Voter turnout has been disappointingly low in several areas of Rivers State as the local government elections continue across the 23 local government areas of the state.

Despite the ongoing election, many polling units have seen few voters show up to cast their ballots.

The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) had assured that all election materials would be distributed and that the polls would be fair and transparent.

A movement restriction was also imposed, running from 6 am to 6 pm in a bid to ensure a smooth electoral process.

However, reports from various locations indicate that while voting began early in some areas, many polling units were sparsely populated.

At several polling stations, including in the Emohua Local Government Area, voting was delayed due to the late arrival of election materials.

In Ward 3, Unit 9, for example, voters were seen standing in small groups, anxiously waiting for the election materials to arrive, while RSIEC officials scrambled to set up the necessary arrangements.

Similar scenes were witnessed in other parts of the state, including Tai and Akuku Toru LGAs, where only a handful of voters had cast their votes by mid-morning.

As of 9:30 am, some polling units, including those in Emohua and Botem Ward, were still awaiting materials.

In contrast, other areas, such as Abonnema in the Akuku Toru LGA, saw a steady stream of voters, though still far below expectations.

Observers have pointed to various factors contributing to the apathy.

Some residents claimed that previous local elections had little impact on their daily lives.

Others expressed frustration with the prolonged delays in receiving election materials, while some noted that the political climate in the state had led to a general feeling of disillusionment.

Additionally, youth engagement in the election process seemed to be at an all-time low, with many youths either staying away from the polls entirely or engaging in alternative activities like playing football in the streets of Port Harcourt and other localities.

Security around the polling stations has been tight. This move was aimed at preventing any disruptions to the electoral process, but it has done little to ease the anxiety among voters, many of whom were already disenchanted with the system.

Rivers State Electoral Commission Chairman, Michael Odey, assured the public that all efforts were being made to ensure the election proceeds smoothly.

DAILY GAZETTE will continue to monitor the situation.

Jonathan’s Brother Denies Reports Of Ex-President Stepping Back From 2027 Election

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has refuted rumors suggesting he has withdrawn from the 2027 presidential race.

The denial comes after reports surfaced claiming Jonathan had decided against running to maintain Southern unity.

Though Jonathan has not formally announced his candidacy, sources indicate he has already begun consultations in preparation for a potential second term.

The latest twist in the story came on Friday when his cousin, Azibaola Robert, took to his verified Facebook page to dismiss the claim that Jonathan had stepped aside from the race.

Azibaola debunked an article from Newsweek Nigeria that was headlined, “Jonathan Rejects Pressure to Contest in 2027, Says He Won’t Be Used Against Southern Unity.”

He branded the report as false and urged Nigerians to ignore it.

He further clarified that the unnamed “aide” cited in the article as the source of the information did not exist.

While Jonathan has not made an official declaration regarding his candidacy, Azibaola emphasized that the former president has neither confirmed nor ruled out his intention to run.

He also stated that Jonathan would not give in to pressure from those advising him against contesting, attributing their stance to “selfish motives” without offering specifics on what those motives might be.

Nigerian Man Admits To $405,000 Romance Scam In United States

Daniel Chima Inweregbu, a 40-year-old Nigerian, has pled guilty to his involvement in a romance scam that defrauded American women of more than $405,000.

Inweregbu appeared before U.S. District Judge Nanette Jolivette Brown on August 21, 2025, where he admitted to two charges related to the scheme.

According to a statement from Acting U.S. Attorney Michael M. Simpson, Inweregbu pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud, as well as using an alias to further the fraudulent scheme, in violation of multiple sections of the United States Code.

He also pleaded guilty to a conspiracy to launder money obtained through these illicit activities.

The scam, which took place between July 1, 2017, and December 16, 2018, involved Inweregbu and his co-conspirators using fake identities to lure women into emotional relationships.

They created profiles on social media and dating platforms under the alias “Larry Pham,” portraying a middle-aged man looking for love. Once the victims responded, the scammers, including Inweregbu, established emotional bonds and manipulated the women into sending large sums of money.

The victims were convinced to transfer funds for various fake emergencies, with the money directed into domestic bank accounts controlled by the scammers.

In total, the scam resulted in actual and potential losses exceeding $405,000.

The fraudulent group also engaged in money laundering activities, using intermediaries to disguise the source and ownership of the stolen funds.

Inweregbu now faces significant prison time. For Count 1 (conspiracy to commit fraud), he could be sentenced to up to 20 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and three years of supervised release.

For Count 12 (conspiracy to commit money laundering), he faces up to 20 years in prison, a fine of up to $500,000, and three years of supervised release.

Additionally, he is required to pay a mandatory special assessment fee of $100 for each count.

Sentencing is scheduled for December 4, 2025.

Pastor Rapes Own Daughter For 4 years, Blames It On ‘Generational Curse’

A 42-year old Pastor, Samson Ajayi, has been ordered to be remanded in prison for allegedly raping his 17-year old biological daughter for over four years.

Ajayi, who confessed to the crime, told the court that he was under the influence of a “generational curse,” claiming his father once abused his own sister.

The police prosecution, Martins Olowofeso, told the court that the abuse occurred repeatedly between March 2021 and August 2025 at the family’s residence in Igoba area of the state.

Olowofeso, said that the offences contravene the Ondo State Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law, 2021.

He requested Ajayi’s remand, pending advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

The charge sheet reads in part, “That you, Samson Ajayi ‘m’ sometimes between July 2021 and August 2025, at Igoba, Akure in the Akure Magisterial district did have carnal knowledge of your biological daughter (name withheld) ‘F’17 years.”

The offences, according to the charge, contravene Sections 3 (a, b, and c) 25 of the Ondo State Violence against Persons Prohibition Laws of Ondo State 2021.

Olowofeso urged the court to remand the defendant in any correctional facility in the state, pending advice from the office of the DPP.

He supported the application by an 11 Paragraphs affidavit to show that there is probable cause to remand the defendant.

Speaking, the accused said, “I didn’t know what came over me. I think it’s a generational curse because my father also did it to my sister, his own biological daughter. It was just an act to disgrace me,”

Ajayi’s lawyer, Kehinde Osadugba, pleaded with the court for a settlement, because the victim’s mother had forgiven him, due to his role as the family’s breadwinner.

However, Magistrate Taiwo Lebi declined the request, emphasising that Ajayi’s confession has provided probable cause to remand him to the correctional facility.

Magistrate Lebi ordered the prosecutor to duplicate the case file and send it to the DPP for further advice.

He therefore adjourned the case to November 20, this year, for review
