Traditional Ruler Nabbed For Attempted Murder

Police in Akwa Ibom State have arrested the village head of Ibagwa in Abak Local Government Area, Chief Friday Jonah Umoren, for the alleged attempted murder of his sister.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, Timfon John, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Tuesday.

According to the police, the traditional ruler was accused of shooting his sister, Unwana Effiong Friday Inyang (32), in the head during a heated dispute.

The victim sustained serious injuries and was immediately rushed to a hospital, where she is currently receiving treatment and is said to be in stable condition.

“On Saturday, September 6, 2025, at about 2:30 p.m., the police received a report of an attempted murder involving the village head of Ibagwa,” the statement read.

The report was filed by a family member who claimed that the suspect used a long, single-barrel gun during the altercation.

Police operatives swiftly responded to the scene, arrested the suspect, and recovered the firearm believed to have been used in the incident.

“Preliminary investigations suggest the incident was the result of a misunderstanding over ownership of palm fruits,” the police spokesperson added.

IPAC Demands Immediate Reinstatement Of Senator Natasha

The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has condemned the Nigerian Senate’s refusal to allow Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan resume her legislative duties following the expiration of her six-month suspension.

Speaking in Abuja, IPAC National Secretary, High Chief Peter Ameh, described the Senate’s action as a direct assault on democracy, warning that continued suppression of elected lawmakers could push the country toward single-party rule.

“It is embarrassing that our democracy is being hijacked by those who do not understand its core values, freedom of expression and the right of every constituency to be represented,” said Ameh.

“To use the authority of the chamber to settle personal scores is a dangerous abuse of power.”

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central, was suspended on March 6, 2025, over allegations of gross misconduct.

Having served the suspension duration, she wrote to the Clerk of the National Assembly on September 4, requesting to resume duties.

However, Acting Clerk Dr. Yahaya Danzaria responded that the matter remains under consideration at the Court of Appeal and until judgment is delivered, no administrative action can be taken.

Ameh rejected the Senate’s reliance on pending litigation to delay her return, arguing that the six-month suspension period was definite and not subject to judicial interpretation.

He also criticized the judiciary for not issuing a timely ruling, stating:

“The courts are enabling tutelary tyranny by refusing to set a strong precedent against the suspension of elected lawmakers by their peers.”

The IPAC Secretary linked the Senate’s stance to wider trends of shrinking democratic space in Nigeria, referencing recent disruptions of opposition rallies in Lagos and Kebbi States.

“The APC is clearly afraid of 2027 because Nigerians have rejected them. If they truly believe in their popularity, why suppress the opposition in Lagos and Kebbi?”

“The next election will be a referendum on their leadership and Nigerians will resist any attempt to stifle opposition voices,” Ameh added.

Ameh called on the Senate, particularly Senate President Godswill Akpabio, to allow Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan to resume work, warning that continuing to leave a senatorial district unrepresented undermines public trust in Nigeria’s democracy.

“No democracy thrives when a whole senatorial district is denied representation due to internal politics. Constituents must not be punished for political disagreements within the chamber.”

2027: More Governors, Senators Will Join APC Soon – National Chairman

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, has expressed confidence that more state governors will join the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking at the 12th expanded stakeholders meeting of the Bayelsa State APC chapter in Yenagoa, Yilwatda, represented by the APC Deputy National Chairman (South), Chief Emma Eneukwu said President Bola Tinubu’s performance has been a major factor attracting defectors from opposition parties.

“Our doors are still open. More governors are still moving into our party. More senators, members of the House of Representatives are coming in because of the caliber, integrity and achievements of the person we made president,” he said.

Yilwatda described President Tinubu as a bold and fearless leader whose policies are yielding results, noting that even critics can’t ignore his achievements.

“Some people are running around trying to challenge the president ahead of 2027. But you know, when a lion walks, the barking of small animals doesn’t distract it. That’s how the President is, focused and result-oriented.”

He said the APC has become more attractive to politicians across regions, especially in the South-South and South-East zones.

“I’m very happy with the South-South. The governors who were previously in other political parties have now seen the quality of our president and have decided to join the APC. That’s commendable. They want to move Nigeria forward, and they know Tinubu is the right person to do it.”

He added that more governors are already in talks to defect to the APC and join the effort to return Tinubu to office in 2027.

Yilwatda emphasized the need for unity within the Bayelsa State APC, urging party members to put aside differences and work together for an overwhelming victory in the next election.

Also speaking at the meeting, former Bayelsa State Governor, Chief Timipre Sylva said the party in Bayelsa is united and fully prepared for the coming elections.

2027: Obi, Otti In Talks To Join ZLP As Labour Party, ADC Crises Deepen

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi and Abia State Governor Alex Otti are reportedly in high-level consultations about moving to the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).

Sources privy to the discussion told DAILY GAZETTE that the ongoing leadership tussle and unresolved factional disputes within LP have made it difficult for the former Anambra governor and Otti to continue their political activities under its banner.

The situation is further complicated by series of conflicting National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings held by opposing factions earlier this year.

On the other hand, ADC is said to be facing similar internal instability, prompting both politicians to explore alternative platforms ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Zenith Labour Party, ZLP, though not a popular platform, is being considered as a possible political home.

Discussions are said to be ongoing at the time of filling this report.

DAILY GAZETTE reports that the move comes after repeated attempts to resolve the LP crisis.

Expectations High As Apple Set To Unveil iPhone 17 With Slimmer Design

Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 17 series on Tuesday during its “Awe Dropping” event, with the spotlight on artificial intelligence enhancements and a new ultra-thin model expected to be called iPhone Air.

The tech giant has remained quiet about specifics ahead of the event, but analysts say Apple is under pressure to deliver as competitors rapidly advance in the AI space.

“Apple’s image of being ‘late to the AI party’ is becoming a major concern,” said Canalys in a market note.

While Android-based rivals have integrated AI more aggressively, Apple’s “Apple Intelligence” suite, introduced late last year, received lukewarm reviews.

Critics say improvements to Siri remain minimal and broader AI capabilities are still lagging behind.

Apple is reportedly working on deeper integration of AI into its search tools and voice assistant, with larger rollouts expected in 2026. Unconfirmed reports suggest Apple may be collaborating with Google to boost AI functionality.

“If Apple doesn’t announce a more ambitious AI strategy soon, they risk losing ground,” said Forrester analyst Thomas Husson.

The main hardware reveal is likely to be the ultra-slim iPhone Air, as Apple shifts its premium appeal from screen size to design minimalism.

Analysts see this move as laying the groundwork for a future foldable iPhone.

However, thinner models often come with engineering trade-offs including higher production costs and reduced battery space.

With production still centered in China, Apple is grappling with the impact of renewed U.S.-China trade tensions under President Donald Trump’s administration.

According to Apple CEO Tim Cook, tariffs cost the company $800 million in the previous quarter, with losses projected to reach $1.1 billion this quarter.

To offset this, Apple may raise iPhone prices in the U.S, while keeping international pricing competitive due to a weaker dollar.

‘Go To Court, Dirtiest Governor In Africa’, Ekwunife Fires Back At Soludo, Says Anambra Now A K!lling Field

The Deputy Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra State, Senator Uche Ekwunife, has issued a fiery response to allegations by Governor Chukwuma Soludo, who recently questioned the authenticity of her academic qualifications.

In a video circulating on social media, Ekwunife addressed the governor directly, defending her educational background and accusing him of poor leadership.

She challenged Soludo to seek legal redress if he believes her PhD certificate is fraudulent.

“If Soludo is convinced my certificate is fake, he should go to court,” she said, adding that her academic records can be independently verified at the University of Calabar for her first degree, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka for her Masters and the U.S institution where she obtained her PhD.

Ekwunife also questioned the legitimacy of Soludo’s own academic and professional standing, describing his professorship as “a departmental title” and calling his criticisms a distraction from his failure in office.

Taking a swipe at the governor’s performance, the APC deputy candidate accused Soludo of overseeing a period of increasing insecurity and instability in Anambra State.

According to her, the state has witnessed rising violence, including the deaths of two House of Assembly members during his tenure.

“Before Soludo came in, Anambra was peaceful. Now, people are afraid to visit. People used to come in droves every Thursday, now they are fleeing,” she alleged.

Ekwunife painted a grim picture of the current state of affairs in Anambra, saying that parts of the state have become unsafe and that residents now live in fear, with incidents of violence and insecurity reportedly on the rise.

In her emotional address, she also made several personal attacks on the governor, accusing him of being “the dirtiest governor in Africa” and hurling unprintable insults.

Tinubu Orders Overhaul Of Military Operations Following Deadly Borno Attack

In response to Friday’s devastating Boko Haram attack in the Darajamal community, Borno State, President Bola Tinubu has directed a comprehensive review of military operations across Nigeria.

The decision includes reassessing the deployment of advanced weaponry and surveillance systems.

The attack, which claimed the lives of 63 people, comprising five soldiers and nearly 58 civilians, many of whom were resettled internally displaced persons, occurred in a community recently repopulated after earlier displacement .

Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima extended his sympathies to the people of Borno State, the governor and military families.

He reiterated President Tinubu’s order instructing the Armed Forces to review security operations and expand the use of military assets including drones to eliminate terrorist threats nationwide .

Shettima emphasized:

“These deaths have left the entire nation in collective grief, but we are confident that justice will be served…”

He also affirmed that the government is evaluating the establishment of state police units to enhance security in vulnerable communities .

Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum visited Darajamal on Saturday, where he extended heartfelt condolences to bereaved families and described the attack as “very sad and unfortunate.”

Calling for broader security support, he urged the immediate deployment of Forest Guards, recently trained militants familiar with the terrain, to support beleaguered military efforts .

In the immediate aftermath, Nigerian forces, operating under Operation Hadin Kai, conducted joint air and ground operations.

These efforts resulted in the neutralization of more than 30 insurgents as they attempted to flee into the Sambisa Forest .

The attack stirred national outrage.

Leaders including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, the United Nations, and Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume condemned the massacre and demanded accountability.

Senator Ndume underscored the urgent need for improved military technology, from drones to armed community units, to bolster local security capabilities .

Nottingham Forest Appoint Postecoglou As New Manager

Nottingham Forest have announced the appointment of Ange Postecoglou as their new manager, following the departure of Nuno Espírito Santo, who was dismissed after a breakdown in his relationship with club owner Evangelos Marinakis.

Postecoglou, 60, will take charge for the first time in Forest’s Premier League clash against Arsenal this Saturday.

The club currently sits 10th in the table with four points from three games.

Nuno, who joined in December 2023, guided Forest to European qualification last season, their first in three decades, by finishing seventh.

However, tensions reportedly escalated between him and Marinakis during the summer, particularly after Forest missed out on Champions League football and following public comments Nuno made about the club’s transfer dealings.

Despite his successful season, Nuno became the first managerial casualty of the 2025/26 Premier League season.

The club confirmed his departure in a late-night statement on Tuesday:

“Following recent circumstances, Nuno Espírito Santo has today been relieved of his duties as head coach,” the club said.

“The club thanks Nuno for his contribution during a very successful era at the City Ground, in particular his role in the 2024/25 season, which will forever be remembered fondly in the history of the club.”

Postecoglou’s appointment marks his return to Premier League management just three months after being sacked by Tottenham Hotspur, despite winning the Europa League and ending the club’s 17-year trophy drought.

His dismissal came after Spurs endured their worst league finish since 1976/77, ending the season in 17th place.

Forest’s owner, Evangelos Marinakis, expressed strong confidence in Postecoglou’s ability to lead the club to further success:

“We are bringing a coach to the club who has a proven and consistent record of winning trophies,” said Marinakis.

“His experience of coaching teams at the highest level, along with his desire to build something special with us at Forest, makes him a fantastic person to help us on our journey and achieve consistently all our ambitions.”

Postecoglou’s previous successes include winning silverware with Tottenham, Celtic, Yokohama Marinos, and the Australian national team.

Forest’s rise under Nuno was built on a pragmatic, defense-first strategy, but Postecoglou is known for his attacking and possession-based style.

His appointment signals a possible tactical shift as the club aims to build on last season’s achievements.

Marinakis made clear the club’s vision to continue progressing:

“After gaining promotion to the Premier League, then building consistently season after season to secure European football, we now must take the right step to compete with the very best and challenge for trophies,” he added.

“Ange has the credentials and the track-record to do this, and we are excited he is joining us on our ambitious journey.”

Nuno’s relationship with the club began to sour toward the end of last season. A tense on-pitch exchange between him and Marinakis followed a 2-2 draw with Leicester in May.

The disagreement reportedly stemmed from the decision to allow striker Taiwo Awoniyi to continue playing despite an injury that later required urgent surgery.

He further stoked tensions by criticizing the club’s transfer activity during pre-season, saying he was “worried” about Forest’s prospects and that his squad was “unbalanced.”

Although Forest later added 13 players under new sporting director Edu Gaspar, the rift had already widened.
