Police Arrest Community Youths After They Flogged Officer Caught Using Drugs

A tense situation unfolded on Tuesday in Nkpolu Community, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, after a group of local youths allegedly assaulted and flogged a police officer, Inspector Joseph Nyian, whom they caught using illicit drugs.

The incident led to an intense police raid on the community.

Inspector Nyian, who does not live in the area, reportedly visited frequently and engaged in drug use. He was apprehended by the youths in a raid aimed at curbing the growing drug menace in their community.

The officer quickly went to the Police Command’s hospital in Port Harcourt, where he obtained a medical report, and subsequently filed charges of torture and theft against the youths, claiming they extorted N78,000 from him.

Nyian also stated that the youths attacked him while he was visiting his pregnant girlfriend.

The police spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the officer’s version of events in a statement, describing the incident as a case of assault and extortion by the youths.

According to her, Nyian had been targeted by the youths because their president, Owhondah Chamberlain, had an interest in the officer’s girlfriend. In retaliation, police forces launched an operation in the community, arresting over 20 individuals.

The Nkpolu youths have long been concerned about the widespread drug use in their area, which they believe is destroying the lives of their peers.

Spearheaded by Chairman Owhondah Chamberlain, they have taken a hardline stance against the drug trade.

The youths initiated an “Operation Say No to Drugs,” which has seen them actively patrol their community, raiding known drug hotspots, and arresting dealers, whom they have handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

The youths have been credited with successfully closing down all known drug-selling locations and stopping drug use in the community.

Chamberlain noted that the NDLEA had been supportive of their efforts, providing guidance and encouragement.

“We have completely eradicated drug sales and use in this community, and we won’t stop until the entire area is free of drugs,” Chamberlain said.

“We are committed to helping users stop their addiction, and we only send dealers to the NDLEA for proper investigation and prosecution.”

During one of their raids, the youths discovered that a man, who later turned out to be the police officer, was engaging in drug use with several others.

The officer allegedly tried to stop the youths from intervening, telling the other users that nothing would happen to them because he was a policeman.

Despite not being in uniform, the youths did not recognize him as a police officer and continued their mission to rid the community of drugs.

Chamberlain expressed disbelief at the officer’s behavior, stating, “He told the others that he was a cop and nothing would happen to them.

He even encouraged the continued use of drugs. It was then that we realized he was a police officer, but we were more focused on stopping the drug abuse in our community.”

The youths had no intention of taking the law into their hands but were adamant about protecting their community from the dangers of drug addiction.

They now believe the police officer is attempting to cover up his drug use by accusing them of extortion.

Chamberlain denied any wrongdoing, particularly the claim that he had accepted the N78,000 from Nyian, stating, “There is no truth to that claim. The police should investigate this and confirm that there is no such transaction.”

Local elders also weighed in on the devastating impact drugs have had on the youth in Nkpolu.

Mr. Okechukwu Aka, a community elder, expressed deep regret over the growing drug problem, noting that many young people who had gained university admissions had dropped out due to addiction.

Some even sold family properties at a fraction of their worth to fund their drug habits.

Aka explained, “Our children, who had bright futures, are now losing everything because of drugs. Some have sold properties worth millions for just a fraction of the price, all to buy drugs. We cannot stand by and watch our youths destroy themselves.”

The elder also highlighted the increasing number of women getting involved in drug abuse, a trend that was even more concerning than the situation with the men.

“The women are now more involved in drug abuse than the boys. This has to stop,” he added.

India Will Not Succumb To US Tariffs, Trade Minister Says

India has firmly stated that it will not “bow down” in the face of recent US tariffs, with Trade Minister Piyush Goyal reiterating that the country will focus on tapping into new global markets.

Goyal’s comments come in response to the imposition of a 50% tariff on several Indian goods entering the United States.

The tariffs, which came into effect this week, are part of Washington’s efforts to penalize India for its significant oil purchases from Russia, a move aimed at pressuring Moscow to end its ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Since returning to the White House, US President Donald Trump has aggressively used tariffs as a key element of his foreign policy, with global trade being significantly affected by these actions.

During an address at a construction industry event in New Delhi on Friday, Goyal emphasized India’s resolve, stating that the country would continue to pursue new markets and strengthen its international position.

“India will never bow down,” Goyal declared. “We are always ready for free trade agreements, but we will not show weakness. We will remain firm in our position and move forward, capturing new markets globally.”

This latest round of tariffs has caused considerable strain in US-India relations, with New Delhi labeling the levies as “unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable.”

The two countries have been unable to make significant progress in trade negotiations, especially regarding agricultural and dairy market access.

India’s exports to the US reached a staggering $87.3 billion in 2024, making the US India’s largest trading partner.

However, analysts warn that the 50% tariff could essentially act like a trade embargo, especially affecting smaller Indian businesses.

Exporters in sectors such as textiles, seafood, and jewelry have already faced canceled orders and lost business to competing nations like Bangladesh and Vietnam, which are expected to see a rise in orders as a result.

Despite these challenges, Goyal assured the public that the Indian government would implement several measures aimed at supporting impacted industries and boosting export growth.

“I am confident that India’s exports will surpass the 2024-25 figures this year, despite these challenges,” Goyal said.

UN Chief Issues Stark Warning On Nuclear Tests Amid Growing Tensions

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has issued a powerful caution to global leaders, urging them to refrain from “playing with fire” as the world faces the growing threat of nuclear tests.

His remarks came on the International Day Against Nuclear Tests, a day dedicated to raising awareness of the dangers posed by nuclear detonations.

In his message, Guterres emphasized the need for global action, stating: “Stop playing with fire. Now is the time to silence the bombs before they speak again.”

The warning comes at a time when international tensions are rising, and the possibility of renewed nuclear testing looms large.

The UN chief’s statement marked the 80th anniversary of the first nuclear test, which took place on July 16, 1945, in the New Mexico desert as part of the United States’ Manhattan Project.

Since that fateful day, more than 2,000 nuclear tests have been conducted worldwide, many of which have left a long-lasting, devastating impact on both the environment and human health.

Guterres underscored the lasting consequences of these tests, which have led to the contamination of land and seas, forced the displacement of communities, and caused generational health issues.

The early atmospheric tests in particular spread radioactive fallout across continents, leaving survivors grappling with various health crises that have passed down through the generations.

The International Day Against Nuclear Tests was established by the UN General Assembly in 2009, following Kazakhstan’s decision to close the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site.

This site has since become a symbol of the global fight for the cessation of nuclear testing and the movement toward full nuclear disarmament.

Guterres pointed out that despite international efforts, the threat of nuclear testing remains a significant danger, particularly in light of escalating geopolitical conflicts.

He reminded the world of the “horrific legacy” left by over 2,000 nuclear tests, adding, “The world cannot accept this.”

As part of his appeal, Guterres urged nations to ratify the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), which was adopted by a wide majority in 1996.

Unfortunately, nearly three decades later, the treaty has yet to come into full force, with several key countries still holding out on ratification.

Florida Executes Man For 1992 Triple Murder

Curtis Windom, 59, was executed by lethal injection in Florida on Thursday for the 1992 murders of three people.

His death marks the 11th execution in the state this year.

Windom was convicted of killing Johnnie Lee over a $2,000 gambling debt, then fatally shooting his girlfriend, Valerie Davis, and her mother, Mary Lubin.

According to reports, he shot Davis at her apartment and Lubin while she was stopped at a nearby intersection.

The execution was carried out at 6:17 p.m. local time at Florida State Prison. His final words were reported as unintelligible by media witnesses.

The U.S Supreme Court had rejected his final appeal a day earlier.

His attorneys had argued that his original legal representation was unqualified.

Despite his conviction, some family members of the victims opposed the execution.

In a statement released by Floridians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty, they expressed disappointment with the state’s decision, calling the process a “dog-and-pony show.”

The statement also revealed they had maintained contact with Windom over the years and had forgiven him.

Windom’s case is part of a broader rise in executions across the U.S. this year, with 30 people executed so far, the highest number since 2014.

Florida leads with 11 executions, followed by Texas and South Carolina with four each.

Most executions in 2025 have been carried out via lethal injection.

However, two used firing squads and three involved nitrogen hypoxia, a controversial method condemned by UN experts as cruel and inhumane.

The death penalty remains a divisive issue in the U.S. It has been abolished in 23 states, while three others; California, Oregon and Pennsylvania have official moratoriums.

Former President Donald Trump, a vocal supporter of capital punishment, recently stated he would seek the death penalty for murder cases in Washington, D.C as part of a broader anti-crime agenda.

NBA Conference: Grant Clemency To Incarcerated LP Lawmaker, Barr. Ngene – Dr. Ubani SAN Begs Gov. Mbah

The Nigerian Bar Association’s 2025 Annual Conference, held in the vibrant city of Enugu, was marked by deep intellectual engagement, cultural celebration and a stirring call for justice from one of the legal profession’s most respected voices, Dr. Monday Onyekachi Ubani, SAN.

In a heartfelt reflection on the conference, Dr. Ubani hailed the event as one of the most memorable in recent NBA history, citing its rich discourse, warm hospitality and the robust participation of legal professionals from across the country.

Yet, amidst the camaraderie and celebration, he drew attention to a pressing matter, the continued incarceration of a fellow lawyer and lawmaker-elect, Barrister Bright Ngene.

Ngene, who won the seat to represent Enugu South Urban Constituency under the Labour Party, remains imprisoned under what Dr. Ubani described as “questionable circumstances.”

Despite winning a rerun election and enjoying the support of his constituents, Ngene has been unable to assume his legislative duties due to delays in hearing his appeal.

Dr. Ubani, a former chairman of the NBA Section on Public Interest and Development Law (SPIDEL), did not mince words as he made a passionate plea to Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, urging him to consider the use of his constitutional powers to grant clemency.

“Releasing Barrister Ngene will not only affirm justice,” Ubani said, “but also restore the faith of his constituents, who reaffirmed their mandate through the ballot. It would be a rare and admirable example of political magnanimity.”

He acknowledged assurances from the Enugu State Attorney-General, Kingsley Udeh (SAN-designate), that the appeal has now been assigned by the Chief Judge and will likely be heard after the court’s vacation.

Still, Ubani maintained that justice delayed is justice denied, especially for a man who has yet to benefit from the office to which he was elected.

The conference officially began on August 21st with a spirited fitness walk, followed by a colourful opening ceremony.

Although former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who was billed to chair the event, was absent, his place was gracefully taken by the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Sa’ad Abubakar CFR.

The conference’s intellectual highlight was a rousing keynote speech by Julius Malema, the fearless South African politician, whose address on justice, equity and African solidarity set an energetic tone for the deliberations that followed.

Plenaries and breakout sessions tackled critical national issues, ranging from human rights and insecurity to access to justice, gender equity, and the justiciability of socio-economic rights.

The sessions were lauded for their thought-provoking content and professional depth.

Governor Peter Mbah and the Enugu State Government received high praise for their seamless hosting.

Security was tight, logistics efficient, and the social atmosphere electric. The lively mammy market became a hub of cultural exchange, offering everything from abacha and okpa to uha soup and palm wine, as delegates from across Nigeria immersed themselves in the East’s renowned hospitality.

However, not all was rosy. Dr. Ubani noted with concern the overrepresentation of politically exposed persons and relatively junior lawyers in key panels.

Prominent figures like Dino Melaye, Deji Adeyanju, and Osita Chidoka drew attention, perhaps too much of it, at the expense of seasoned legal minds.

“Seniority at the Bar is sacred,” he cautioned.

“Whatever the theme, respect for hierarchy must guide future planners.”

He also criticized the spike in hotel and transport prices during the event, lamenting the commercial exploitation of delegates by local service providers.

According to him, while the NBA must support local economies, there must be moderation and fairness in pricing.

While lauding the work of NBA President Afam Osigwe, SAN, the Conference Planning Committee led by Emeka Obegolu, SAN, and the Local Organising Committee chaired by Ikeazor Akaraiwe, SAN, Dr. Ubani reminded the Association of the gold standard set by the 2019 Lagos Conference under A.B. Mahmoud, SAN, and coordinated by Prof. Koyinsola Ajayi, SAN.

“That event brought us closest to international benchmarks like the International Bar Association. We must aspire to surpass it, not just repeat it.”

“The Enugu conference gave us much to celebrate, but the true test of its legacy lies in how we handle the issue of Barr. Bright Ngene. His people cry out for representation. The Bar must not look away.”

“Long live the NBA, and long live Nigeria,” he declared.

Tight Security As Rivers State Set For LG Elections In Over 6,800 Polling Units Tomorrow

Residents across Rivers State’s 23 local government areas are set to vote in local council elections on Saturday, with 6,866 polling units prepared for the exercise.

The polls come just over six months after the Supreme Court nullified the last local government elections conducted by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) on October 5, 2024, citing violations of the Electoral Act.

The elections, taking place in 319 wards, are considered crucial, not only for local governance but also as a bellwether for the 2027 governorship race in the oil-rich South-South state.

Ahead of the vote, RSIEC Chairman Michael Odey urged eligible voters to participate peacefully.

He assured residents of the timely delivery of election materials, including to rural and riverine areas, and confirmed that security arrangements had been strengthened with the help of the police.

Movement will be restricted from midnight to 6 p.m. on election day.

In a bid to boost public confidence, a joint security show of force took place on Friday.

A convoy of personnel and vehicles from the Nigerian Police, Army, Navy, NSCDC, FRSC, and others patrolled major roads in Port Harcourt and Obio/Akpor LGAs, showcasing readiness to maintain peace.

Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, said full deployments have been made to ensure a free, fair, and credible election.

Rivers remains under emergency rule, administered by Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retired), appointed by President Bola Tinubu on March 19, 2025.

This followed the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and members of the House of Assembly after a political crisis between Fubara and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.

Although both men have since reconciled following presidential intervention, Rivers continues to be governed by a sole administrator.

Despite security assurances, several observers and civil society groups have criticized the timing and conduct of the election.

Legal analyst Chetam Nwala argued on Sunrise Daily that holding elections under emergency rule and with an RSIEC chairman appointed by the sole administrator is undemocratic.

Also speaking on Sunrise Daily, Jake Epelle, CEO of TAF Africa, expressed concern over the presence of both APC and PDP candidates, calling it a “political concoction” aimed at confusing voters.

He claimed the arrangement was designed to mask underlying power plays and urged Rivers people to remain vigilant.

The Supreme Court nullified the 2024 local elections due to what it called “gross violation” of the Electoral Act, including the continuation of voter registration even after an election date had been announced.

Justice Jamilu Tukur, delivering the ruling, declared the election process void, citing non-compliance with Section 150 of the Electoral Act.

The court also barred federal financial institutions from releasing funds to the Rivers State government until it complies with earlier court orders.

69 Dead After Migrant Boat Capsizes Off Mauritanian Coast

Migrants aboard a Guradia di Finanza and Navy military vessel are tranferred from the so-called migrant "Hotspot" operational processing facility on the southern Italian Island of Lampedusa, south of Sicily, to another center, on July 11, 2022. (Photo by Alessandro SERRANO / AFP)

At least 69 migrants have been confirmed dead after a boat capsized earlier this week off the coast of Mauritania, officials told AFP on Friday.

The tragic incident occurred late Tuesday night, approximately 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of Nouakchott, the Mauritanian capital.

According to a senior coastguard official, panic broke out onboard when migrants spotted the lights of a nearby town and rushed to one side of the boat, causing it to overturn.

Authorities were initially reporting 49 casualties, but that figure was later revised to 69 after further search and recovery efforts.

A coastguard patrol rescued 17 survivors from the water.

According to those rescued, the boat had departed The Gambia about a week earlier, carrying around 160 people, mostly Gambians and Senegalese nationals.

Officials have not disclosed the boat’s intended destination, but it’s believed the migrants were attempting to reach Europe, a route known for its high fatality rate due to dangerous sea conditions and the use of overcrowded, poorly equipped vessels.

The tragedy is the latest in a series of deadly incidents involving migrant boats.

On August 4, 76 people died and dozens went missing after a boat carrying mostly Ethiopian migrants sank off the Yemeni coast.

On August 13, at least 20 migrants drowned in the Mediterranean Sea after their boat capsized near Lampedusa, Italy.

The vessel had been carrying 97 people. Aid group Save the Children reported that a 1.5-year-old girl was among the missing.

In 2024 alone, over 10,000 migrants lost their lives attempting to cross to Spain by sea, according to the rights group Caminando Fronteras.

Deadly incidents like these highlight the risks faced by thousands of migrants fleeing poverty, conflict, and insecurity in search of a better life in Europe or the Gulf region.

The Atlantic route from West Africa and the Red Sea crossing to Yemen remain among the most perilous paths, often navigated in unsafe boats without proper equipment or navigation tools.

As of now, search and rescue efforts are ongoing.

4 Gunmen Killed, Kidnap Victim Rescued As Police, Agunechemba Raid Hideouts In Anambra

A joint operation by the Anambra State Police Command and the Agunechemba Security Squad has resulted in the death of four suspected gunmen and the rescue of a kidnapped victim in Awa community, located in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

According to the police, the operation targeted camps believed to be operated by members of a separatist group.

The combined security team stormed the area following credible intelligence, leading to a 15-hour gun battle with the armed men.

During the raid, a kidnap victim was rescued, despite having been held hostage even after a ₦20 million ransom had been paid by his family.

Four suspected militants were killed in the process, and the team also recovered arms, explosives, and vehicles.

Weapons recovered include 2 pump-action guns, 1 fabricated AK-47 rifle, 1 K2 assault rifle, 1 locally made hunter gun, 3 locally made IEDs, 2 empty gas cylinders, 2 cable wire wraps, 1 black Lexus RX 350 (Reg. No. ACA 340 MA).

Others are; 3 Toyota Camry cars (Reg. Nos: ABC 268 FQ, EKY 151 CD, FGG 706 ME), 1 additional black Toyota Camry, Radio communication box, 3 bags of 50kg rice, driver’s license, National ID card, 5 mobile phones (Infinix, Tecno Spark, and 3 analogue phones), sleeping gear, a desert boot, a large cooler, and a roll of tarpaulin

SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer, stated that the success of the operation was due to the effective community policing strategy in place, supported by the Agunechemba Squad.

“In a sustained effort to rid Anambra of criminal elements, operatives from the Rapid Response Squad Awkuzu, in collaboration with Agunechemba Vigilante Group, stormed a secessionist/terrorist camp in Awa. Despite the ransom paid, the victim remained in captivity until the joint team rescued him,” the statement said.

The police also confirmed that Awa community has been identified as a major operational base for the gang, with an estimated three camps used to launch their criminal activities.

Governor Charles Soludo previously reaffirmed his administration’s support for the Agunechemba Security Squad amid calls for its dissolution.

He praised the recent operation as proof of its effectiveness.

Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, assured residents that the police remain committed to restoring peace and order in Anambra.

He revealed that follow-up operations are underway to track down fleeing suspects and dismantle remaining criminal camps in the state.

“The Command is resolute in ensuring the safety of Ndi Anambra. We urge the public to remain vigilant and continue supporting our efforts to rid the state of criminal elements,” he added.

Nigerians To Pay $80 Duty On US-Bound Shipments – NIPOST

Nigerians sending parcels to the United States, excluding letters and documents, will now be required to pay a mandatory $80 customs duty (or the naira equivalent), the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has announced.

The directive follows a new Executive Order issued by the U.S. government, which suspends duty-free exemptions for low-value international postal shipments.

The policy change, enacted under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), now applies to all countries and global postal operators, not just Nigeria.

“The Nigerian Postal Service wishes to inform our esteemed customers of a recent policy change by the Government of the United States of America… This applies to all postal operators and designated postal administrations worldwide,” the public notice read.

NIPOST warned that the decision will have serious implications for Nigerians sending goods to the U.S, whether for personal, business, or family purposes. The policy affects all items except regular documents and letters.

The postal agency noted that logistics companies, airlines, and cargo carriers are adjusting operations to meet new customs requirements, potentially leading to longer transit and processing times for U.S.-bound parcels.

“Global logistics operations are also being affected, as airline and cargo carriers adopt more cautious measures… This may extend both transit and processing times, potentially resulting in delivery delays,” NIPOST said.

Additionally, all incoming shipments to the U.S. will now undergo stricter customs inspections, increasing the likelihood of delays for recipients.

To manage the impact of the U.S. directive, NIPOST said it is working closely with international agencies, including the Universal Postal Union and U.S Customs and Border Protection, as well as airline partners, to reduce service disruptions and maintain delivery efficiency.

“We reassure our customers that NIPOST remains committed to providing safe, reliable, and efficient postal and courier services despite this global regulatory adjustment,” the agency stated.

The U.S. government’s decision to end the $800 de minimis threshold which previously allowed low-value packages to enter the country duty-free, has triggered concern among small businesses and global postal services.

The administration of former President Donald Trump, which introduced the change, argued that the loophole was being exploited to avoid tariffs and smuggle drugs.

Moving forward, parcels will either face country-specific tariff rates or flat-rate duties ranging from $80 to $200 per item, though some personal items and gifts may still qualify for exclusions.

Peter Navarro, Trump’s trade adviser, stated that the move would curb illicit imports while also generating additional revenue from international shipments.

Postal services in countries such as France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, and Australia have already begun adjusting to the new policy, with many ceasing acceptance of U.S-bound packages temporarily.

Enugu Govt Begins Payment Of Agricultural Insurance Premiums For Farmers

The Enugu State Government has commenced the payment of agricultural insurance premiums on behalf of farmers across the state, in a move aimed at mitigating the impact of pests, crop diseases, and climate change on food production.

This was disclosed on Friday in Enugu by the Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-Industrialisation, Mr. Patrick Ubru, during the South-East Zonal Consultative Forum for the Review of the National Gender Policy in Agriculture and its Strategic Plan of Action (2025–2030).

Speaking at the sidelines of the forum, Ubru emphasized the importance of insurance in light of the increasing unpredictability of weather patterns and natural disruptions affecting farming.

“The vulnerability of the climate has significantly affected agriculture. The payment of insurance premiums is a step toward protecting farmers from these risks,” he said.

Although he did not reveal the total amount of premiums paid or the number of farmers who will benefit, the commissioner stressed that the initiative reflects the state’s commitment to building climate resilience in agriculture.

As part of broader agricultural reforms, Ubru also announced the establishment of a seed laboratory at the Ministry of Agriculture.

The facility is designed to test seed viability, fertility, and overall condition prior to planting, ensuring higher yields and more productive farming.

Additionally, a seed gallery has been created to make quality, affordable seeds and seedlings more accessible to farmers, tailored to suit the various soil types across Enugu State.

Highlighting ongoing state initiatives, Ubru spoke on Governor Peter Mbah’s Cocoa Initiative, which currently has 30,000 cocoa seedlings available.

The program aims to cultivate over 3,000 hectares of cocoa farmland as a starting point.

He further revealed that the state government is developing 260 farm estates, one in each of the state’s political wards.

Each estate will cover 200 hectares, with one hectare allocated per farmer, along with extension services to support cultivation.

“The governor will soon announce the commissioning date for these farm estates,” Ubru noted.

The commissioner reiterated that agriculture remains central to the current administration’s economic growth strategy.

“Governor Peter Mbah is committed to transforming agriculture in all its forms. His plan is to grow the state’s economy from $4.4 billion to $30 billion through agriculture and agro-industrialisation,” he concluded.
