Police in Akwa Ibom State have arrested the village head of Ibagwa in Abak Local Government Area, Chief Friday Jonah Umoren, for the alleged attempted murder of his sister.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, Timfon John, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Tuesday.

According to the police, the traditional ruler was accused of shooting his sister, Unwana Effiong Friday Inyang (32), in the head during a heated dispute.

The victim sustained serious injuries and was immediately rushed to a hospital, where she is currently receiving treatment and is said to be in stable condition.

“On Saturday, September 6, 2025, at about 2:30 p.m., the police received a report of an attempted murder involving the village head of Ibagwa,” the statement read.

The report was filed by a family member who claimed that the suspect used a long, single-barrel gun during the altercation.

Police operatives swiftly responded to the scene, arrested the suspect, and recovered the firearm believed to have been used in the incident.

“Preliminary investigations suggest the incident was the result of a misunderstanding over ownership of palm fruits,” the police spokesperson added.
