NEC Meeting: Kwankwaso Excluded From NNPP 2027 Alliance Decisions – National Chairman

The National Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Dr. Agbo Major, has declared that Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has no influence over the party’s alliance plans for the 2027 elections.

Dr. Major made this statement following Kwankwaso’s announcement at a meeting of his Kwankwasiyya group in Abuja on Thursday, where Kwankwaso indicated that the NNPP was open to forming alliances in 2027.

The NNPP has been embroiled in an ongoing leadership dispute, with the party seeking a final ruling from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to update its records accordingly.

While Kwankwaso and his Kwankwasiyya Movement continue to assert control over the party, the national executive led by Major insists that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Kwankwaso’s group expired after the 2023 general elections.

They also claim that Kwankwaso and his followers have been expelled due to alleged anti-party activities.

In a statement released Friday in Lagos, Dr. Major described the NEC meeting organized by the Kwankwasiyya Movement in Abuja as illegitimate and void.

He emphasized that decisions made during that meeting cannot override the party’s official positions or recent rulings by the Abia and Federal Capital Territory High Courts regarding NNPP leadership.

“Beyond the breach of trust, we are concerned that Kwankwaso continues to use the NNPP name to engage in negotiations and make comments that could destabilize the country,” Major said, referring to Kwankwaso’s recent accusations against the Federal Government of neglecting Northern Nigeria in developmental projects.

Dr. Major also noted that the NNPP is still awaiting a response from INEC concerning its request to formally recognize the new party leadership following a court-ordered convention.

He warned that “any individual or group entering into an alliance with Kwankwaso and his Kwankwasiyya faction under the NNPP banner does so at their own risk.”

The chairman reassured that the NNPP remains open to all Nigerians and will ensure that all aspirants participate fairly through mandatory primaries.

Trump Withdraws Secret Service Protection For Kamala Harris

Former U.S Vice President Kamala Harris is no longer under Secret Service protection, following a decision by the Trump administration to end the extended security detail granted to her by former President Joe Biden.

According to a White House official, the protection which typically lasts six months after a vice president leaves office, was allowed to lapse on July 21, 2025.

Biden had previously approved an extension of that protection, but the Trump administration has now revoked it, CNN reported on Friday.

Reacting to the development, a senior aide to Harris told AFP that the former VP was “grateful to the United States Secret Service for their professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to safety.”

Though Harris has kept a relatively low profile since losing the 2024 election to Donald Trump, she is expected to re-emerge publicly this fall as part of a nationwide book tour promoting her upcoming memoir.

Titled “107 Days,” the book offers an inside perspective on Harris’s brief but historic presidential campaign. The memoir, published by Simon & Schuster, is scheduled for release on September 23, 2025.

In a statement, Harris said she approached the writing of the book with “candor and reflection,” and described it as a “behind-the-scenes account” of her journey during the campaign. She had become the Democratic presidential nominee after Biden stepped down amid mounting concerns about his cognitive health.

Kamala Harris made history as the first woman—and the first woman of color—to serve as Vice President of the United States.

Since returning to power in January, President Trump has taken a series of aggressive steps targeting individuals he sees as political foes.

These include revoking security clearances from former officials, defunding certain universities, and pressuring law firms that were previously involved in litigation against him.

Most recently, federal agents raided the home and office of John Bolton, Trump’s former national security advisor and long-time critic. Officials stated the raid was part of an investigation into mishandling of classified documents.

ASUU Threatens Strike Over Unmet Demands, FG Denies Agreement

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is on the brink of a nationwide strike, potentially affecting over 150 public universities and about 2 million students. This follows the federal government’s denial of signing any formal agreement with the union, a claim ASUU strongly disputes.

ASUU chapters across the country have held protests, demanding the federal government honour the renegotiated 2009 agreement. They argue that failure to do so could lead to another shutdown of the academic system.

Key unresolved issues include non-signing of the renegotiated 2009 agreement, withheld salaries for three and a half months, unpaid promotion arrears and revitalisation funds, poor retirement benefits and poor working conditions, renaming of the University of Maiduguri, failure to remit third-party deductions and non-implementation of staff salary reviews.

Kano Zone Coordinator, Mr. Abdulkadir Muhammad, called on the government to act swiftly to avoid further crisis.

He also cited insecurity, poverty, and high living costs as broader concerns affecting lecturers and the education system.

Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, insisted no binding agreement had been signed with ASUU, clarifying that what the union referred to were merely draft proposals under review.

“We want agreements that are actionable and sustainable, not empty promises,” said Alausa.

He revealed that a technical committee, led by the education ministry’s Permanent Secretary, is refining the drafts for final negotiations.

The Tinubu-led administration, he assured, is committed to finding a long-term solution.

ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, criticized the government’s denial, citing poor record-keeping and inconsistent communication.

“The 2009 agreement was signed and used for academic allowances and university governance. To now deny its existence is disingenuous,” he said.

Piwuna also clarified that while no strike date has been fixed, ASUU branches are monitoring the situation closely.

Students across universities have expressed fear over another possible disruption. Many say their academic progress has already been affected by past strikes and can’t afford more delays.

“We’re already behind schedule. Another strike will only worsen things,” said Chisom Ofodile, a student at the University of Jos.

Veteran journalist Mahmud Jega compared the current situation to a similar standoff in 1993, when the government called an agreement with ASUU “valid but not binding.”

“After 32 years, it seems we’re right back where we started,” he wrote.

Abia ADC Affirms Don Norman Obinna As Chairman, Denies Suspension Rumour

The Abia State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has firmly refuted reports claiming that its State Chairman, Don Norman Obinna, has been suspended.

In a statement issued by the party’s State Publicity Secretary, Chiamaka Ohaja, the ADC described the viral publication as false, unauthorized, and deliberately misleading.

The party emphasized that there is no factional crisis within the Abia ADC, contrary to the impression created by the report.

Ohaja reaffirmed Obinna’s position as the duly recognized Chairman and clarified that only the National Executive Committee (NEC) has the constitutional authority to suspend a state chairman.

She further warned that individuals responsible for spreading what she termed “self-serving propaganda” would be sanctioned according to the party’s disciplinary procedures.

“This misleading report is an attempt to destabilize the party and mislead the public. We urge our members and the general public to disregard it in its entirety,” the statement concluded.

Kidnapping Report Against Kaduna State Mischievous – Information Commissioner

The Kaduna State Government has strongly refuted a recent report that ranks it among Nigeria’s top states for kidnapping incidents, calling the claims false and misleading.

The report, attributed to Lagos-based research firm SB Morgen, claimed that 629 people were abducted in Kaduna between July 2024 and June 2025.

It placed the state among the worst affected by kidnapping and banditry.

However, in a statement released on Thursday, the state’s Ministry of Information, through Commissioner-Designate Malam Ahmed Maiyaki, dismissed the figures as inaccurate and “deliberately mischievous.”

“The report is a fabrication meant to undermine the success of the Kaduna Peace Model, which has been widely endorsed by security agencies and stakeholders,” Maiyaki said.

He emphasized that security had significantly improved under Governor Uba Sani’s administration, with peace restored to several previously troubled areas.

Over 500,000 hectares of abandoned farmland have been reclaimed, and livestock markets in Birnin Gwari and Giwa, shut down for over a decade, have reopened, revitalizing local economies.

Maiyaki urged residents to disregard the SB Morgen report, asserting that it doesn’t reflect the current security situation in the state.

He also cautioned media outlets and researchers against publishing “sensational and unverified” data that could demoralize security forces.

Also speaking on the issue, Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Suleiman Shuaibu, shared recent security achievements.

In April alone, 34 operations led to the arrest of 54 suspects and the rescue of over 75 kidnapped victims.

“Several criminal hideouts have been dismantled, and many of the arrested suspects are currently facing prosecution,” Shuaibu said.

He highlighted the administration’s dual security strategy, which includes both military action and non-violent measures such as the Kaduna Peace Dialogue Group.

The group engages with repentant bandits willing to surrender and reintegrate into society.

Shuaibu further cited the reopening of long-shuttered markets and improved agricultural productivity as major indicators of progress.

“Our focus remains on protecting lives, promoting peace, and ensuring sustainable development. We urge the public to remain vigilant and not be misled by inaccurate reports,” he added.

Anambra Govt Bans Writing Assignments In Textbooks

The Anambra State Government has officially banned the practice of writing assignments directly into textbooks, calling it both uneconomical and unsustainable.

The announcement was made on Thursday by the State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, during the third day of a capacity-building workshop for private school proprietors and teachers.

The event was organised by the Ministry of Education and held at St. John of God Secondary School, Awka.

Prof. Chuma-Udeh explained that the policy is aimed at ensuring textbooks remain reusable, especially for the benefit of younger siblings who may need the same books in subsequent school years.

She also emphasized the importance of having textbooks that promote inclusivity, diversity, equality, and cater to the needs of all learners.

The commissioner warned that the state would not condone disobedience to the new directive and called on parents, teachers, and school managers to comply fully.

She also urged stakeholders to report any cases of violation to the Ministry of Education.

According to her, the move is part of broader efforts by the state government to reduce the financial burden on families and to foster a more sustainable and high-quality education system across Anambra.

Osun Govt Drags FG To Supreme Court Over Withheld Local Government Allocations

The Osun State Government has filed a fresh lawsuit at the Supreme Court against the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), over the alleged illegal withholding of federal allocations meant for its 30 local government councils since March 2025.

The new legal action, initiated on Monday, follows the state’s earlier move to withdraw a previous suit on the same matter.

Represented by its Attorney-General and a legal team led by senior lawyers Mike Ozekhome (SAN) and Musibau Adetunbi (SAN), the state is asking the apex court to compel the Federal Government to release the withheld funds and permanently stop what it describes as the “unconstitutional and arbitrary” seizure of local government revenues.

Osun argues that the AGF ignored binding judgments from both the Federal High Court in Osogbo (delivered November 30, 2022) and the Court of Appeal (June 13, 2025), which upheld the legitimacy of the local government elections held on February 22, 2025.

These rulings nullified earlier polls conducted in October 2022 under the previous state administration.

The state disclosed that the AGF, in a letter dated March 26, 2025, advised that local government funds be withheld due to a supposed “crisis” at the grassroots level.

However, Osun maintains that the court decisions have already resolved the legal questions around the legitimacy of the elected local officials.

In its suit, Osun is seeking a declaration that the AGF has no constitutional authority to withhold local government allocations, that the action violates valid court judgments, that all funds must be released directly into the accounts of the elected councils and a perpetual injunction be granted to prevent future seizures.

A portion of the court filing states:

“The seizure, suspension, withholding and/or refusal to pay the allocations and revenues due to the constituent local government councils of the plaintiff state… is unconstitutional, unlawful, wrongful and ultra vires the powers of the defendant.”

The state is also asking the Supreme Court to determine whether the AGF is constitutionally obligated under Section 287 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) to obey judgments of superior courts, and whether his March 26 directive can stand in light of the appellate court’s decision.

In a related development, the Osun Government has also filed a suit at the Federal High Court in Osogbo challenging the Chief Judge’s decision to transfer a case involving the same funds to Abuja, to be heard by a vacation judge.

The state warned that parallel proceedings could lead to conflicting outcomes.

In an affidavit, Olufemi Akande Ogundun, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, described the federal action as “an affront to the rule of law.”

He emphasized that only the Supreme Court can authoritatively resolve the constitutional issues at stake, citing precedents such as A.G. Kano State v. A.G. Federation (2007) and RMAFC v. A.G. Rivers State (2023).

The state further accused the AGF of creating a “self-induced urgency,” noting that he failed to respond to earlier court filings for over 80 days before submitting an urgent affidavit on August 13, 2025.

No hearing date has been set yet for the Supreme Court or Federal High Court proceedings.

2027: No Intention Of Leaving NNPP, But I’m Open To Alliances – Kwankwaso

Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the 2023 presidential flagbearer of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has stated that he has no intention of leaving the party, despite growing speculation about his political future ahead of the 2027 elections.

Speaking during the party’s 9th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Abuja, Kwankwaso reaffirmed his commitment to NNPP, while also expressing a willingness to engage in discussions with other political stakeholders.

“Many expected us to announce today whether I’m leaving NNPP or joining another party, that was never the purpose of this meeting. NNPP is our party, and we are satisfied and proud to be part of it,” he said.

While reiterating his confidence in the party’s direction, Kwankwaso said the NNPP remains open to strategic dialogue and partnerships, but any future negotiations would be based on collective decision-making.

“We believe we have something meaningful to offer at the national level. We are ready to talk, but discussions will be inclusive and in the best interest of the country,” he added.

Earlier at the meeting, NNPP’s National Chairman, Dr. Ajuji Ahmed, publicly endorsed Kwankwaso as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.

“Insha Allah, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso will fly our flag again in 2027. He is a visionary and dedicated leader,” Ahmed said.

He described the NNPP as a rising force in Nigerian politics “the beautiful bride” with a focus on progressive policies and the well-being of ordinary citizens.

On the party’s readiness for upcoming elections, NNPP’s National Secretary, Dipo Olayoku, confirmed preparations were in top gear for the November 8, 2025 Anambra governorship election, as well as the FCT Council elections scheduled for February 2026.

JUST IN: Jose Mourinho Sacked

Fenerbahce have officially parted ways with Jose Mourinho, the Portuguese manager who joined the Turkish giants in June 2024.

The decision comes just 48 hours after the club’s disappointing exit from the UEFA Champions League playoff round at the hands of Benfica.

In a brief statement released on Friday, the Istanbul-based club confirmed the termination of Mourinho’s contract:

“We are parting ways with Jose Mourinho, manager of our professional A team since the 2024-2025 season.”

Mourinho, a high-profile appointment, had been brought in to elevate Fenerbahce’s European ambitions. However, the early elimination from continental competition appears to have sealed his fate.
