Labour Party Sets Stage For Lagos LG Polls, Inaugurates 24-Member Caretaker Committee

In a strategic move ahead of the upcoming Local Government elections in Lagos State, the Labour Party (LP) has inaugurated a 24-member Caretaker Executive Committee to take charge of its operations within the state.

The inauguration, held on Friday, May 9, at Access Hotel in Ikeja, saw the formal introduction of an interim leadership tasked with guiding the party through a crucial transitional phase.

The committee is expected to oversee reconciliation efforts, electoral preparations, and internal restructuring.

Federal Representative for Ojo Federal Constituency in the 10th National Assembly, Seyi Sowunmi, announced the list of appointees before the official inauguration.

He emphasized that the new caretaker leadership, chaired by Rotimi Odunaike, is empowered to manage party affairs and coordinate its political agenda across Lagos.

According to Sowunmi, “The newly appointed exco in Lagos State, led by Rotimi Odunaike, the State Chairman, comprises 24 members.”

The leadership team includes six Deputy State Chairmen, Adegboyega Adeniji, Comrade Rasheed Bamishe, Barr. Affiong L. Affiong, Barr. Solomon Agbafor, Dr. Adefolaseye Adebayo, and Opeyemi Oluwaseun, as well as Hon. Dorcas Irhoghama Omorodion as State Secretary.

Other members of the committee include Mr. Eze Akpiri Ejotorishede (Assistant State Secretary), Comrade Onafowokan Gbenga (Assistant State Secretary), Adesegbe Ehigiator (State Treasurer), Mr. Oladele Egbayelo (Financial Secretary), Mrs. Titi Oworu (Women Leader), and three Deputy Women Leaders; Mrs. Olayemi Aboyewa, Mrs. Ijeoma Okafor, and Basirat Owoiya.

Also appointed were Justin C. Ijeh (Publicity Secretary), Femi Ferguson (Organising Secretary), Barr. Femi Kehinde (State Legal Adviser), Samuel Ajayi Crowther (Auditor), Damilare Akinlere (Youth Leader), and three Assistant Youth Leaders—Ebije Elliot Chukunalu, Isiaq Taofeek Kayode, and Precious Ofulue.

Sowunmi reiterated the committee’s mission, stating that it is “tasked with fostering unity among members by promoting a cohesive and inclusive environment to reconcile all factions and aggrieved individuals within the party.”

He added that the team is to commence preparations for the Lagos LG elections without delay and handle any emerging electoral issues.

A key part of the committee’s assignment is to organize and conduct congresses at the ward, local government, and state levels, an important step in reestablishing the party’s democratically elected leadership.

Hon. Afam Ogene, Federal Representative for Ogbaru constituency in Anambra and leader of the LP caucus in the House of Representatives, also addressed members at the event.

Speaking on the recent wave of defections from the Labour Party, Ogene described the situation as temporary.

“For anybody who is a student of Nigerian politics, defection is nothing,” he said.

“By the time primaries of the various political parties begin next year, people who are denied tickets in some of the parties they are going to would also look for platforms to run elections. Some of them would run coming back, so we are not bothered.”

He continued, “There are several people waiting to run on our platforms. But in politics, 24 hours is a long time. All the dynamics and indices will change because by early next year people will defect to other political parties.”

Ogene dismissed concerns about the party’s future, asserting that the LP remains prepared and has the capacity to fill vacated roles with new aspirants ready to serve.

Only The Blind Will Accuse Tinubu Of Non-Performance – Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has lauded President Bola Tinubu’s administration for its transformation of Abuja’s infrastructure, declaring that only the “visually impaired” would fail to acknowledge the visible progress made in the city.

Speaking during an inspection of several ongoing and completed projects across the FCT on Saturday, Wike praised Tinubu for delivering what he described as “first-class infrastructure” to the nation’s capital.

“Mr President has given first-class infrastructure to Abuja. All of you can attest to the fact that, indeed, Abuja has really changed. So, we are happy for it,” the Minister said.

Wike further expressed gratitude for what he described as effective leadership and fulfillment of electoral promises.

“I want to thank God Almighty for providing the right leadership to Mr President to provide the dividends of democracy to the residents of Abuja. I don’t see why anybody would say that Mr President has not done well, except you are just blind.”

“Except, you don’t want to admit something that you know that is good. We are happy that we have fulfilled the promises that we have made,” he added.

The Minister disclosed that numerous projects are scheduled for commissioning as part of events marking Tinubu’s second anniversary in office.

According to him, the inauguration exercises will span a two-week period.

“I think by next week, we will be able to provide all the projects that will be inaugurated during Mr President’s second anniversary but this Gishiri interchange is one of them, the OSEX to Wassa Junction is also one of them, the International Conference Centre is another one. The N5 is also another one,” Wike enumerated.

He continued, “We have so many roads, both in the satellite towns and in the city. Even the Abuja Greater Water will also be inaugurated. So, we have a lot of projects.”

“It will take us about two weeks to inaugurate most of our projects.”

Wike emphasized the importance of leadership in delivering developmental gains.

“What makes us happy is when people are happy, because at the end of the day, we are working for the people. I have said it before, leadership is a major issue. When you have the right leadership, people will benefit from it,” he stated.

IPOB Slams Amnesty International Over Alleged Link To Okigwe Attack

Scene of the attack,

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has sharply criticized Amnesty International Nigeria for what it termed a rushed and baseless accusation linking the group to a recent violent attack along Okigwe Road in Imo State.

In a statement issued by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, IPOB condemned Amnesty International for allegedly aligning with blackmailers and losing its credibility through its perceived alliance with the Nigerian government.

“The esteemed family and movement of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, globally denounce what can be termed as State-sponsored terrorist assaults on civilians along the Okigwe-Owerri road in Imo State on May 8, 2025,” the group said.

“Simultaneously, we denounce all forms of media extortion aimed at IPOB and ESN, especially from Amnesty International Nigeria, for alleging and highlighting IPOB and ESN as offenders in those crimes.”

Describing the accusations as part of a long-standing pattern of state-backed propaganda, the group added “It is truly tragic that the Nigerian government has repeatedly conducted terrorist attacks against its own people merely to coerce IPOB into submission.”

The statement continued: “Since 2021, the Nigerian State has funded numerous violent criminal acts in the South East Region, using some irresponsible media and fake rights groups to attribute those criminal assaults to IPOB and ESN to evade investigations.”

IPOB cited several incidents it claims were wrongly attributed to the group, including the 2021 Owerri prison break and the murder of politician Ahmed Gulak.

“Included in those violent events, the Nigerian government at all levels have sponsored and linked IPOB, was the Owerri prison escape… We also recall the political assassination of Alhaji Ahmed Gulak in Owerri… which indicates that the government orchestrated his murder in Imo State.”

The group also accused Imo State of empowering armed groups under the guise of community security.

“The hiring of hoodlums who aggressively upheld the notorious sit-at-homes and devastated the Orsu community and beyond, and Imo State government’s recruitment of criminals under the guise of Ebubeagu and Asawana militia, has resulted in the extrajudicial killings of numerous Igbo youths,” the statement said.

It also decried the role of the military in a past incident: “The deceptive operation by the Nigerian military in Aba on Biafra Heroes Day, May 30, 2024, led to the deaths of 4 Igbo soldiers who were used as sacrificial victims.”

Referring directly to the May 8 incident, IPOB alleged: “The alleged murder of 30 individuals and torching of vehicles belonging to people along the Okigwe-Owerri road… is a plan by Nigeria government and Amnesty International Nigeria, joining together to ambush IPOB and ESN operatives locally and internationally.”

Rejecting all claims of involvement, IPOB stated: “As a peaceful self-determination movement, we have separated ourselves from all these claims and Amnesty International cannot claim that they don’t know that IPOB and ESN members were not involved in the killing and insecurity going on since 2021 till today.”

They called for international scrutiny: “We have similarly requested that international and independent investigative bodies, not the likes of Amnesty International Nigeria, be brought in to examine all these offences IPOB and ESN are being accused of.”

The group accused Amnesty International of seeking favors from the Nigerian state. “Amnesty International follows for minor and peanuts reward from Nigeria government and Imo State Government.”

Condemning media narratives against the movement, the statement continued: “IPOB has faced numerous state-sponsored media assaults and extortion-instigated allegations from various compromised media outlets… As a dedicated and accountable movement, we have protected ourselves by exposing all their fabrications.”

On Amnesty’s recent actions, IPOB said: “The recent report by Amnesty International, Nigeria, labelling IPOB and ESN as the culprits behind the Okigwe arson attack… demonstrates the extent of deceit afflicting that once-revered human rights organisation.”

They added: “It is worrisome and concerning that a supposed human rights organisation such as Amnesty International Nigeria would stoop so low as to align with blackmailers… while allowing Fulani terrorists to invade Ndigbo unopposed.”

Asserting a loss of credibility, IPOB declared: “With this development, Amnesty International Nigeria has diminished its credibility as a reliable human rights organisation… Amnesty International Nigeria has become entangled in the corruption and bribery of the Nigerian government.”

Calling the organization’s conduct a betrayal, IPOB stated: “Amnesty International’s involvement with this corrupt coalition of organisations to extort IPOB and its vigilante groups is a shame for the human rights community…”

“If Amnesty International Nigeria is free from corruption… they would have demanded an independent inquiry into these horrific terrorist assaults… and might not have rushed to conclusions.”

Restating its mission, the group emphasized: “We have never targeted our recognised adversaries, much less harm innocent individuals travelling from Okigwe to Owerri within our region.”

“We will proceed with all the aspects of truth and we will persist in demanding an independent inquiry into all state-sponsored covert violent acts…”

IPOB reiterated its demand for dialogue, not suppression: “We will not yield to any type of extortion. The sole answer to the Biafra agitation is an open dialogue regarding Biafra’s freedom or a referendum, rather than through violence or staged false flag operations.”

EFCC Overstepping Its Constitutional Boundaries, Atiku Condemns ‘Illegal’ Detention Of Former Rep Member, Kazaure

Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, has strongly criticized the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for the arrest and prolonged detention of former House of Representatives member, Muhammad Kazaure.

In a statement shared on his verified X handle on Saturday, Atiku denounced the EFCC’s action as a clear violation of due process.

He accused the anti-graft agency of overstepping its constitutional boundaries, calling the incident part of a growing trend of political intimidation.

“We witnessed this same abuse in the unlawful arrest and detention of Mr. Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan, whose release was only secured after massive public outrage and pressure,” Atiku wrote, referencing a recent case that sparked widespread criticism.

He continued, “Now, the EFCC has targeted Hon. Muhammad Kazaure, a former member of the House of Representatives and an unapologetic critic of the gross misgovernance and failings of the Tinubu administration.”

“Abducted in Kano and whisked away to Abuja, Kazaure is presently being held incommunicado, with no formal charge or explanation offered to his family, legal team, or the Nigerian people.”

Atiku emphasized that lawful procedure must be observed in all arrests, noting, “Let it be stated without equivocation: even if there were legitimate grounds for arresting any citizen, such action must adhere strictly to the rule of law.”

“The EFCC is duty-bound to publicly disclose the reasons for any arrest and must not detain individuals indefinitely under the guise of investigation.”

He concluded by alleging that the motive behind Kazaure’s arrest was his consistent criticism of the current administration.

“We are left with no choice but to conclude that Kazaure’s ordeal is a direct consequence of his fearless and unrelenting criticism of this administration,” Atiku asserted.

Governor Yusuf Secures Release Of Pregnant Women, Nursing Mothers, Other Inmates From Kano Prison

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, on Friday facilitated the release of eight women from the Goron-Dutse Correctional Centre, including two pregnant women and two nursing mothers, by settling their fines and compensation requirements.

The development was confirmed in a press statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Tofa.

The release occurred during the governor’s unannounced visit to the correctional facility, where he was accompanied by several key government officials.

According to the statement, the purpose of the visit was to evaluate the inmates’ living conditions and explore how the state could improve their welfare and rehabilitation.

Governor Yusuf pledged his government’s commitment to upgrading prison infrastructure and ensuring the gradual release of inmates detained for minor infractions.

During the visit, he also highlighted a pressing issue: the backlog of pre-trial detainees.

“I assure you that the state government will work with the judiciary to accelerate the dispensation of justice and ease congestion in correctional centres,” the governor said.

He went on to offer words of encouragement to the inmates: “I also urged you to remain hopeful and view their current situation as a test of fate. He encouraged them to embrace positive change in anticipation of their eventual reintegration into society.”

To immediately improve living conditions, Yusuf ordered the provision of cows, food items, mattresses, blankets, and beverages for the inmates.

In a related effort, the governor also visited the Janguza Maximum Security Correctional Facility, where he announced plans to transfer inmates from the overcrowded Kurmawa Correctional Centre to Janguza.

He praised the state of the Janguza facility, describing its infrastructure and general condition as satisfactory.

Governor Yusuf urged physically capable inmates to reflect on their past and make positive changes.

He also acknowledged the contributions of former Minister of Interior, General Abdulrahman Bello Dambazau (Rtd.), in making the Janguza facility a reality.

Reaffirming his administration’s objectives, the governor said his government remains focused on “facilitating the release of eligible inmates, supporting students to return to school, and empowering others through vocational training.”

Inmates across both facilities reportedly expressed heartfelt appreciation for the governor’s visit and his proactive measures to improve their lives behind bars.

A leading member of the Young Progressive Party (YPP), Bestman Eruba, has stated that the party is willing to offer its platform to Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, for his re-election bid if the ongoing crisis in the Labour Party (LP) persists.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Eruba praised Otti’s leadership style and development-driven policies, saying they are in line with the YPP’s values.

According to him, the party would not hesitate to give Otti an automatic ticket in 2027 should he need an alternative platform.

“We will yield the YPP platform for Governor Alex Otti whenever he needs political refuge,” Eruba declared.

“He has shown remarkable leadership and excellence in service with a performance record that is visible to the blind and audible to the deaf.”

He warned against distractions or conspiracies by individuals or groups that could derail Otti’s progress, emphasizing the governor’s strong track record and broad public approval.

“His style, projects, programmes and policies align with the objectives of our party,” he said.

“The Young Progressives Party will therefore not hesitate to offer him our gubernatorial ticket in 2027 as a veritable platform to consolidate on his agenda to deliver the dividends of democracy to our people,” Eruba added.

He went further to describe Otti as a perfect fit for YPP’s political philosophy “Otti is working and the only platform that will guarantee sustenance of his remarkable career in public life is the Young Progressives Party where our mantra is service to the people. We have the reach and we have severally shown that we can accommodate ourselves and fix the broken pieces of our relationship.”

Eruba concluded with an open invitation: “YPP is your home, come and coast to victory in 2027.”

DAILY GAZETTE recalls that YPP’s 2023 governorship candidate in Abia, Enyinnaya Nwafor, had also recently declared support for Governor Otti.

Nwafor finished third in the election, behind Otti of the LP and Okey Ahaiwe of the PDP.

Although YPP secured notable wins in the 2023 elections clinching two House of Assembly seats in Osisioma and two chairmanship seats in the November 2, 2024, local government polls, its legislative members have since defected to the LP.

Confusion Trails Deadly Attack On Travellers In Imo State

Fresh violence erupted in Imo State on Thursday as gunmen launched a deadly assault on travellers in Abor Umulolo, Okigwe Local Government Area.

While the police confirmed the incident, they did not disclose the number of casualties.

However, Amnesty International claimed that as many as 30 travellers were killed, fueling tension across the state.

Police authorities attributed the attack to suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its militant wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).

According to the police, the assailants opened fire on commuters in Onuimo and Okigwe in the early hours of the day, killing several individuals and torching vehicles.

Responding security forces engaged the gunmen in a fierce shootout.

“The hoodlums were overwhelmed by the superior fire power of the security agents,” the police said. One of the gunmen was killed in the process, while others reportedly escaped with gunshot wounds.

The attackers, said to have operated in three coordinated groups, allegedly barricaded the highway around 4 am, firing sporadically and setting vehicles on fire.

“A full-scale search and cordon operation is currently underway, with security operatives combing nearby forests and surrounding areas where the suspects are believed to be hiding,” police officials added.

At the scene, a snatched Toyota Corolla with registration number ENU 283 CN and an HP laptop were recovered.

State Police Spokesman, Henry Okoye, confirmed that the body of the deceased suspect had been taken to the morgue.

“The recovered items are in police custody for further investigation,” he said.

Okoye added that an intensive manhunt was ongoing to capture the fleeing attackers. He urged residents to “remain vigilant and report any suspicious persons or activities to the nearest police station.”

Meanwhile, Amnesty International took to X (formerly Twitter) to claim that 30 travellers were killed and 20 vehicles, including trucks, were burnt during the incident.

The organization called on the government to investigate the incident thoroughly and ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.

In a related development, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, refuted claims that extradition proceedings had begun against Simon Ekpa, a factional leader of IPOB.

His Special Assistant on Communication and Publicity, Kamarudeen Ogundele, clarified that recent media reports had misrepresented the minister’s statements.

“The report is untrue and a complete departure from what the AGF said at the Stakeholders/Citizen Engagement Forum held on Thursday in Abuja,” Ogundele stated.

He explained that Fagbemi only noted that discussions were ongoing with Finnish authorities to ensure accountability.

“Ekpa, who is currently facing trial in Finland, is being discussed in diplomatic channels to ensure he is held responsible for his actions,” Ogundele said.
