Six K!lled, 23 Injured In Trailer Crash On Lagos–Ibadan Expressway

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed that six persons lost their lives while 23 others sustained injuries in a road traffic crash along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.

The accident occurred around the Four Square Camp area on Monday.

According to the FRSC Public Relations Officer in Ogun State, Odunsin Afolabi, the incident was reported at about 11:27 am, and rescue teams from the Ogunmakin Unit Command arrived at the scene within two minutes.

Afolabi disclosed that the crash involved a DAF CF 380 trailer with registration number SNA 287 XA, adding that it was a lone accident.

“A total of 29 persons were involved in the crash. Twenty-three passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries, while six were confirmed dead,” he said.

The FRSC attributed the accident to fatigue and excessive speeding, which reportedly caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle.

Afolabi also cautioned against the practice of conveying passengers alongside cattle or goods, noting that mixed loading often complicates rescue efforts and increases the risk of fatalities during crashes.

Victims of the accident were taken to Oreoluwa Hospital at GOFAMINT Camp, Ogunmakin, and Victory Hospital in Ogere for medical attention.

The Corps has advised motorists, particularly operators of heavy-duty vehicles, to ensure regular maintenance and proper inspection of their vehicles.

Drivers were also urged to observe speed limits, remain alert while driving, and comply with all traffic and road safety regulations to prevent avoidable accidents on major highways.

Malami Asks Court To Vacate Interim Forfeiture Of N213bn EFCC-Seized Assets

Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has approached the Federal High Court in Abuja, seeking to overturn an interim forfeiture order placed on properties seized by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Justice Emeka Nwite had on January 6 ordered the interim forfeiture of 57 properties suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities.

The EFCC alleges that the assets, valued at ₦213.23 billion, are linked to Malami and two of his sons, Abdulaziz and Abiru Rahman Malami.

The anti-graft agency secured the order pending the conclusion of investigations into the source of funds used to acquire the properties, which it claims were obtained through illicit means.

In his application, Malami urged the court to set aside the forfeiture order. However, the specific grounds for the request were not disclosed as of the time of filing.

The court has also not fixed a date for hearing the application.

Recall that the court had directed the EFCC to publish the interim forfeiture order in a national newspaper, allowing interested parties 14 days to show cause why the properties should not be permanently forfeited.

The matter was adjourned to January 27, 2026, for a compliance report.

Among the seized assets are a luxury duplex on Amazon Street, Maitama, purchased in December 2022 for ₦500 million and currently valued at ₦5.95 billion after enhancement; two large storey buildings in Garki, Abuja, formerly known as Harmonia Hotels, valued at ₦7 billion; and Meethaq Hotels in Jabi and Maitama, with a combined valuation exceeding ₦21 billion.

Other properties listed by the court include commercial shops, warehouse facilities, plazas, residential estates, and extensive landholdings spread across Abuja, Kano, Kaduna, Kebbi, and Nasarawa.

These include properties in Asokoro, Wuse II, Gwarimpa, Apo Legislative Quarters, Birnin Kebbi, and Kano GRA, as well as several hotel facilities, shopping units, and large parcels of land.

Justice Nwite, while listing the assets, detailed the acquisition dates, purchase prices, and current valuations, noting that several properties had significantly appreciated following renovation and development.

Meanwhile, Malami, his wife Bashir Asabe, and his son Abdulaziz are already standing trial before the same court over alleged ₦8.7 billion money laundering offences.

On Wednesday, Justice Nwite granted Malami bail in the sum of ₦500 million, with two sureties required to provide landed properties in Maitama, Asokoro, or Gwarimpa.

The court also ordered Malami to deposit his travel documents and passport photographs and barred him from leaving the country without prior court approval.

Justice Nwite fixed February 17 for the commencement of trial on the 16-count money laundering charges filed by the EFCC against Malami, his wife, and his son.

The interim forfeiture represents one of the most extensive asset seizures linked to a former federal minister in Nigeria, underscoring the EFCC’s ongoing efforts to recover suspected proceeds of corruption.

Court Bars NLC, TUC From Staging Protest In Abuja

The National Industrial Court in Abuja has temporarily restrained the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Trade Union Congress (TUC), and three other parties from embarking on any industrial action or protest within the Federal Capital Territory.

Justice Emmanuel Subilim issued the interim order on Monday, following an ex parte application filed by the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, and the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA).

The restraining order affects the NLC spokesperson Benson Upah, the TUC General Secretary Nuhu Toro, and the Chairman of the FCT NLC, Stephen Knabayi, among others.

The application, filed through senior advocate James Onoja (SAN), seeks to prevent disruptions to public order and government operations.

According to the FCT Administration, the planned protest, scheduled for February 3, violated a previous interlocutory order delivered by the court on January 27, 2026, which instructed striking workers to resume duties.

Despite being served with this order, the unions allegedly issued circulars directing members to continue the strike.

The court also directed security agencies to ensure law and order is maintained in the nation’s capital.

The matter has been adjourned to February 10 for the hearing of the motion on notice.

In an affidavit supporting the application, the claimants said that the industrial action, initiated on January 19, 2026, had led to the closure of FCTA offices, schools, and departments, effectively bringing government functions to a halt.

They warned that the proposed protest could disrupt public life, impede vehicular movement, and violate the rights of residents, including private sector workers, expatriates, and tourists.

Gov Nwifuru Flags Off Second Batch Of Ebonyi Overseas Scholarship Beneficiaries

Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has officially flagged off the second batch of beneficiaries of the state’s Overseas Scholarship Scheme at the Chuba Okadigbo International Airport, Ezza.

The governor described the event as “destiny taking flight,” noting that the scholars—brilliant sons and daughters of Ebonyi—embody the state’s commitment to investing in human capital as a path to sustainable development.

Speaking on Monday at the flag-off ceremony, Governor Nwifuru emphasized that the scholarship program, fully funded by the Ebonyi State Government, reflects the administration’s dedication under the People’s Charter of Needs Agenda to nurturing a knowledgeable and globally competitive workforce.

“These students go as ambassadors of Ebonyi State, carrying with them our culture, values of discipline, integrity, hard work, and excellence. Every naira invested in them is a collective sacrifice by the people of Ebonyi, and I am confident they will justify that trust,” the governor said.

Governor Nwifuru commended the Ministry of Tertiary Education and the State Scholarship Board for their transparent selection process and consistent monitoring of beneficiaries.

He further highlighted the success of the first batch of scholars, noting that many are excelling in top universities in the United Kingdom and Canada, with several on track to graduate with distinctions.

As he sent off the scholars, the governor offered prayers, confidence, and encouragement, urging them to excel abroad and return home equipped to contribute to the development of a stronger and more prosperous Ebonyi State.

Trump Threatens Legal Action Over Grammy Joke Linking Him To Jeffrey Epstein

US President Donald Trump has threatened legal action against comedian Trevor Noah following a joke at the 68th Grammy Awards that referenced the late financier Jeffrey Epstein.

The comment came while Noah was presenting the Song of the Year award, won by Billie Eilish for “Wildflower.”

As he congratulated Eilish, Noah quipped that Trump wanted Greenland “almost as much as he wants Greenland,” alluding to the former president’s past interest in acquiring the Arctic territory.

He then joked that Trump might need “a new island” to socialise on after Epstein’s death, prompting laughter from the audience.

Noah, who announced that the 2026 Grammys would be his final hosting gig after six appearances, has generally avoided political commentary in previous ceremonies.

Trump responded on his Truth Social platform, calling the Grammys “virtually unwatchable” and denouncing Noah’s remarks as false and defamatory.

“I have never been to Epstein Island, nor anywhere close, and until tonight’s statement, I have never been accused of being there,” he wrote.

The former president also criticised Noah personally, calling him a “total loser” and insisting the comedian “needs to get his facts straight.”

He added that his lawyers would be instructed to explore legal action over the joke.

Soludo Orders Demolition Of 10,000 Shops In Onitsha Main Market, Gives Traders 14 Days To Relocate

Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo has issued a 14-day ultimatum to traders in Onitsha Main Market to vacate over 10,000 shops marked for demolition.

The directive comes amid controversy following the state government’s earlier closure of the market on Monday, January 26, due to traders’ continued observance of the Monday sit-at-home linked to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Governor Soludo made the decision during an unscheduled visit to the market, noting that many shops remained closed in defiance of government orders lifting the sit-at-home directive.

He described the persistent Monday closures as unacceptable, warning that the government would no longer tolerate disruptions that undermine economic activities and public order.

The governor emphasized that traders must operate from Monday to Saturday or consider relocating elsewhere.

Despite partial compliance from some traders, many were shocked to discover that their shops had been marked for demolition with only a two-week window to move.

Uzochukwu Joseph Okoye, a trader at the market, expressed frustration over the short notice.

“Fourteen days is too short. Many of us are ready to trade, but transportation, banking, and other logistical issues make it almost impossible to fully operate,” he said.

Okoye also questioned the rationale behind the demolition, noting that all shops were originally approved by the state government before construction, and that traders have been paying taxes on them.

He warned that demolishing more than 10,000 shops could affect roughly 50,000 families, creating a serious humanitarian concern.

The traders are calling on the governor to provide more time, preferably a year, to allow them to continue business while planning relocation, arguing that this would ensure minimal disruption to livelihoods and the local economy.

ADC Intimidated By APC’s Membership Surge, Says Party Spokesman

The All Progressives Congress has dismissed criticisms from the African Democratic Congress over its ongoing nationwide digital membership registration exercise, describing the allegations as driven by fear and intimidation over the ruling party’s growing popularity.

The APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, said the ADC’s claims that civil servants were being coerced into joining the party were false, baseless and aimed at discrediting what he described as a landmark innovation in party administration.

In a statement on Monday, Morka accused the ADC of orchestrating a disinformation campaign, including the circulation of a fake APC membership slip allegedly linked to a known terrorist, to undermine public confidence in the registration process.

“That claim is entirely false and unfounded and is calculated to cast a shadow over the cutting-edge digitisation of our party’s membership register,” Morka said.

According to him, the large turnout recorded since the launch of the e-registration exercise reflects Nigerians’ growing confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which he said is already producing tangible results across the country.

Morka said millions of Nigerians had voluntarily signed up to the party, prompting the APC leadership to extend the registration period from January 31 to February 8, 2026, to accommodate the influx of prospective members.

He argued that the ADC’s reaction underscores its discomfort with the ruling party’s expanding support base, but stressed that such concerns do not justify the spread of misinformation.

“While opposition parties fumble and trade in falsehoods, the APC remains focused on consolidating its reforms and setting a new benchmark for digital and democratic innovation in Africa,” he said.

Speaking at a joint briefing, the APC National Secretary described the e-registration exercise as a historic milestone, noting that it demonstrates the party’s commitment to transparency, compliance and global best practices.

Morka, who also addressed the briefing, said the success of the registration drive has placed the APC ahead of the Independent National Electoral Commission in capturing accurate and verifiable membership data, adding that the party remains committed to strengthening internal democracy and public trust.

Kano Bye-Election: NNPP Affirms Candidacy Of Late Lawmakers’ Sons

The interim leadership of the New Nigeria People’s Party has reaffirmed that Nabil Sarki Aliyu Daneji and Saadu Aminu Saadu remain the party’s valid candidates for the February 21 by-elections into the Kano State House of Assembly.

The by-elections are to fill the vacancies in the Kano Municipal and Ungogo state constituencies created by the deaths of two serving lawmakers.

The party said the names of the two candidates had already been duly forwarded to the Independent National Electoral Commission, insisting that their nominations were valid and in line with the party’s internal processes.

The NNPP was responding to claims by the spokesperson to the Kano State Governor, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, who had alleged that the emergence of multiple candidates from different NNPP factions justified Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s defection to the All Progressives Congress.

In a statement, the NNPP interim publicity secretary, Engr. Ibrahim Karaye, dismissed the claims, maintaining that the party had officially presented the sons of the deceased lawmakers as its candidates for the by-elections.

Karaye acknowledged that some factional elements, including Senator Mas’ud Jibrin Doguwa, had submitted different names to INEC, but described such actions as illegal and unauthorised.

He stressed that the party dissociated itself from individuals parading themselves as factional chairmen, noting that many of them were either former members whose memberships had been terminated or individuals who had never belonged to the party.

According to him, the NNPP remains under the leadership of Hon. Abdullahi Ibrahim Maikano as acting chairman, adding that Senator Doguwa had never been a member of the party.

He further stated that Hon. Abdullahi Zubairu Abiya’s claim to the party chairmanship became invalid following the dissolution of the Dungurawa-led executives by the party’s National Working Committee.

The NNPP spokesman advised the Kano State Government to focus on governance and policies that benefit the people of the state, rather than engaging in what he described as attempts to rationalise actions perceived by party members as a betrayal of the NNPP and its leadership.

2027 Presidency: Atiku In Talks With Us, ADP National Chairman Confirms

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has held a high-level consultative meeting with the national leadership of the Action Democratic Party at his Abuja residence, fuelling fresh conversations around opposition strategies ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The meeting, which took place at the weekend, was confirmed on Sunday by the ADP National Chairman, Yabagi Yusuf Sani, who described the engagement as part of the party’s ongoing consultations with key democratic stakeholders across the country.

In a statement issued in Abuja, Sani said the discussion was centred on protecting democratic pluralism, strengthening opposition stability and safeguarding credible electoral choices ahead of the next general elections.

“The national leadership of the ADP, led by the National Chairman, Yabagi Yusuf Sani, held a high-level consultative meeting with Atiku Abubakar, Wazirin Adamawa, as part of its ongoing engagements with key democratic stakeholders,” he said.

According to him, the talks focused on the need to preserve democratic competition, ensure constitutionally compliant political platforms and promote responsible political preparedness to protect voter choice and institutional integrity.

Sani dismissed speculations that the meeting was aimed at a merger or recruitment drive, stressing that it should not be interpreted as a signal of imminent political realignment.

“ADP remains focused on institutional stability, constitutionalism and keeping credible options open for Nigerians. Any future decisions, if and when they arise, will be taken transparently and communicated formally,” he said.

Despite the clarification, political observers note that the meeting comes amid heightened speculations about possible opposition realignments ahead of 2027.

In particular, attention has been drawn to ongoing discussions around opposition coalition talks, including rumours of a potential Peter Obi–Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso alliance on the platform of the African Democratic Congress.

Benue Massacre: Nine Suspects Plead Not Guilty To 57 Terrorism Charges

Nine persons accused of involvement in the deadly attack on Yelwata community in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State on Monday pleaded not guilty to a 57-count amended charge bordering on terrorism before the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja.

The suspects were arraigned before Justice Joyce Abdul-Malik following the withdrawal of charges against one of the defendants, Yakubu Mamman, by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN).

The Office of the AGF had earlier announced that the suspects, said to be strongly linked to the Yelwata killings, would be arraigned after what it described as a painstaking investigation and collaboration among relevant government agencies.

The prosecution team was led by the AGF in person, alongside the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation, Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN).

Counsel representing the defendants include Ibrahim Angulu (SAN), Christiana Sylvester, Aminu Abubakar Bagudu, A.I. Kaura and Adamu Abdullahi, who appeared for various defendants.

Fagbemi informed the court that the prosecution filed a 57-count amended charge dated January 19 and filed on January 20, 2026, against ten defendants, but applied to withdraw the charge against the sixth defendant as well as an earlier eight-count charge filed in September 2025.

The application was not opposed by the defence and was granted by the court.

The remaining defendants are Ardo Lawal Mohammed, Muhammadu Saidu, Alhaji Haruna Abdullahi, Yakubu Adamu, Muhammed Musa, Abubakar Adamu, Shaibu Ibrahim, Saleh Mohammed and Bako Jibrin.

Upon the prosecution’s request, the amended charge was read to the defendants with the aid of an interpreter, after which they pleaded not guilty to all counts.

According to the charge, the defendants allegedly participated in meetings between May and June 2025 in Nasarawa State to plan the attack on Yelwata community, which was carried out on June 13, 2025, resulting in the burning of houses, grievous bodily harm and the death of about 150 persons.

Following the pleas, the prosecution applied for an accelerated hearing and requested that the defendants be remanded in custody pending trial.

The court also heard an oral application for bail by the defence but directed that a formal bail application be filed.

Justice Abdul-Malik ordered that the defendants be remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre and adjourned the case to February 26 and 27, 2026, for commencement of trial.

The prosecution said it intends to call eight witnesses in the course of the trial.
