Royal Drummers Relocate To Oba Ladoja’s Residence Following Olubadan’s Death

Following the passing of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, on Monday, the royal drummers traditionally attached to the monarch have moved to the Bodija residence of Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, the next in line to ascend the throne.

As news of Oba Olakulehin’s transition spread across Ibadan, thousands of well-wishers and the palace’s traditional drummers shifted their allegiance to Oba Ladoja, who currently holds the title of Otun Olubadan, the next in the hierarchical line to become Olubadan.

This development mirrors the events of March 14, 2024, when Oba Olalekan Balogun passed away.

On that occasion, the same group of royal drummers immediately relocated to the Alalubosa residence of Oba Olakulehin, signaling his position as the heir to the throne at the time.

Oba Ladoja, born on September 25, 1944, now awaits the formal processes that will confirm his ascension.

According to tradition, the Olubadan-in-Council will first nominate him as the preferred candidate.

The council’s nomination will then be submitted to the Oyo State Government for approval and the official presentation of the staff of office.

Authorities believe he was attempting to transfer the captives to another faction of insurgents.

Some of the victims were reportedly meant to be dropped at Tegina before continuing the journey to Yauri in Kebbi State.

The second rescue took place in Agwara, where 11 more victims five women and six children were intercepted while trying to cross a river heading toward Yauri.

“The vehicle conveying them was driven by Yusuf Abdullahi, who attempted to hand them over to another criminal group. He has been arrested and is currently under investigation.”

Commending the collaborative efforts of the security forces, Niger State Commissioner of Police, CP Adamu Abdullahi Elleman, praised the effectiveness of the operation and encouraged continued public cooperation.

“Timely and actionable information from the public remains crucial in rescuing other victims and dismantling the networks of these criminal elements,” he stated.

APC Begins Sale Of Nomination Forms For NASS Bye-Elections

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially begun selling nomination and expression of interest forms to aspirants vying for seats in the upcoming National Assembly bye-elections scheduled for August 16 across 12 states.

These elections aim to fill legislative vacancies created by lawmakers who resigned or passed away after pursuing executive positions.

Among the aspirants who picked up their forms on Monday at the APC national secretariat in Abuja was Mr. Oscar Aghedo, contesting to represent the Ovia South-West/North-East Federal Constituency in Edo State.

Speaking to journalists after collecting his forms, Aghedo said, “Today is a great day for me, having purchased these forms to run for the Federal House of Representatives for Ovia South-West/North-East Federal Constituency.”

He outlined his legislative vision and commitment to community development. “My intention to represent my people is to make good laws for our country and to ensure proper representation, especially in the area of infrastructural development.”

“I assure you that I will make my people proud. Some of my constituents are here with me, and I sincerely appreciate them for their support so far,” he stated.

Aghedo urged the APC’s National Working Committee (NWC) to conduct transparent primaries on July 19.

He stressed that if elected, he would focus on implementing constituency projects and promoting youth and citizen empowerment.

He also praised the work of his predecessor, now serving as the Edo Deputy Governor.

“The immediate past lawmaker, who is now the Edo deputy governor, had done remarkably well in infrastructure development. I will not just build on that but will give priority to human capacity development,” Aghedo added.

Expressing confidence in his candidacy, he acknowledged support from key stakeholders.

“By the grace of God, I have the blessings of God, the governor’s support, and the mandate of my people.”

“I have made several contributions to my constituency and my community. That is why they believe in me, and I have a lot to offer if elected in office.”

He reiterated his plan to prioritize empowerment programs.

“Youth and women’s empowerment and support for the less privileged would be my priorities.”

“Keeping the youth meaningfully engaged will reduce the crime wave and other social vices. We must create avenues to keep them productive and focused.”

“Fortunately, insecurity in my constituency is currently low, but we must not relax; we will work to keep it at the barest minimum,” he said.

Also present at the party’s national secretariat was Yakubu Waziri, an aspirant for the Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency in Kaduna State. Waziri highlighted the improvements in the security situation in the area.

“For a long time, the area had constantly been in the news for negative reasons,” he said.

“We are not just experiencing relative peace; we are enjoying permanent peace, to the glory of God.”

Waziri pledged to focus on security and youth empowerment if elected.

He also expressed confidence heading into the polls: “I have no fears going into the election. I have God on my side and the support of the people as well as the governor.”

Former PDP Governorship Candidate Resigns From Party, Pitches Tent With ADC

Alhaji Adamu Maina Waziri, who contested the governorship elections in Yobe State under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2003 and 2007, has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Waziri, a former Minister of Police Affairs and member of the PDP Board of Trustees, handed in his resignation from the PDP on Monday at the Dogotubo Ward Centre in Potiskum LGA, where he submitted his letter to the ward chairman.

Explaining his reasons for leaving, Waziri said the PDP’s “current leadership and direction [is] inconsistent with a major political party,” further stating that the party “has lost its moral standing as the primary opposition bastion.”

Reflecting on the PDP’s origins, he described as ironic the party’s founding mission in 1998 “to combat non-democratic rule,” given what he referred to as its present condition.

He emphasized that his defection was motivated by a commitment to national interest, saying he wanted to “recreate democracy, restore good governance, and enable Nigerians to live in peace and prosperity.”

Waziri also pledged to bring along his political allies into the ADC and called on others to be part of what he described as a movement to “restore democratic hope in the country.”

His announcement aligned with a zonal ADC meeting held in Potiskum, which brought together interim leaders from various levels of the party, including state, zonal, local government, and ward representatives.

At the meeting, the ADC Chairman in Yobe State, Hon. Umaru Kalli, voiced optimism about the party’s chances in the next general elections, saying the ADC could “wrest power from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027 and return Nigeria to the path of economic recovery.”

During the gathering, party officials encouraged Nigerians particularly the youth, women, and elderly to join the ADC in working toward a better future for the nation.

Ban On Global Nuclear Test Still In Force – Shettima

Vice-President Kashim Shettima has restated Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to the global ban on nuclear tests, emphasizing that the country has no interest in pursuing nuclear weapons development.

Speaking during a courtesy visit by Dr. Robert Floyd, Executive Secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organisation (CTBTO), at the Presidential Villa on Monday, Shettima noted that Africa’s immediate priorities are rooted in overcoming poverty and dealing with climate change — not nuclear armament.

“The outcome of any nuclear conflict is never a win-win situation; it is always the opposite. We are fighting poverty; we are fighting a war against the relationship between the economy and ecology in sub-Saharan Africa.”

“We have no business dabbling in anything that has to do with nuclear weapons,” the Vice President said.

Shettima went on to reaffirm Nigeria’s dedication to the treaty, adding, “I want to assure and reiterate our commitment to a comprehensive nuclear test ban, and I want to appreciate your organisation for the extra vigilance you have taken, having 337 stations spread across the world. All seven tests conducted by DPR Korea were detected,” he noted.

He also commended the CTBTO’s contribution beyond nuclear monitoring, saying, “The beauty of CTBTO’s function is that its monitors also serve civilian purposes, especially in assisting us to detect tsunamis, volcanic seismic activities. Your functions are contributing to the global stability of our ecology.”

In response, Dr. Floyd praised Nigeria’s role in advancing the CTBTO’s objectives, acknowledging the country’s support under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He described Nigeria’s relationship with the organisation as a “natural partnership.”

Dr. Floyd further highlighted Nigeria’s contributions through its key institutions, the Nigerian Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC) and the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA), noting their valuable technical input and dedication to the goals of the CTBTO.

He underscored the life-saving potential of the data generated by these agencies, particularly in forecasting natural disasters and monitoring threats to environmental balance.

Echoing this sentiment, NAEC Acting Chairman, Engr. Anthony Ekedegwa, stressed that the collaboration with the CTBTO has been vital in building local capacity and strengthening Nigeria’s nuclear energy sector.

Similarly, Dr. Yau Idris, Director General/CEO of the NNRA, spoke about the agency’s efforts in ensuring Nigeria’s compliance with international nuclear testing regulations through its partnership with the CTBTO.

Also in attendance at the meeting were the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Dunoma Ahmed, CTBTO Senior External Relations Officer, Mr. Charles Oko, as well as senior officials from the Ministry, NAEC, and NNRA.

ADC Crisis Deepens As Aggrieved Members Sue To Remove David Mark-Led Interim Leadership

Tensions within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have escalated, as three disgruntled party members have taken legal action to challenge the legitimacy of its newly installed interim leadership.

The lawsuit, filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja, seeks to oust former Senate President David Mark from his position as Interim National Chairman.

The plaintiffs; Adeyemi Emmanuel, Ayodeji Victor Tolu, and Haruna Ismaila are calling the leadership transition both unconstitutional and illegal.

In suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/1328, they list the ADC as the 1st defendant, while the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the party’s immediate past National Chairman, Ralph Nwosu, are named as 2nd and 3rd defendants respectively.

Also joined in the case are Senator David Mark (4th defendant), former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola (5th defendant) as Interim National Secretary, and ex-Minister of Sports Bolaji Abdullahi (6th defendant) as Interim National Publicity Secretary.

The plaintiffs contend that the appointment of the interim officers contravenes the ADC’s constitution, particularly the 2018 amended version.

They are also raising concerns about whether those appointed were even properly registered members of the ADC when the appointments were made.

Among the key issues the court is being asked to address are:

  • Whether the ADC constitution permits the creation of interim leadership roles;
  • Whether the Executive Committee of the party can be dissolved in the absence of a formally convened National Convention or an official decision by the National Executive Committee (NEC);
  • Whether INEC acted within the law by recognizing the interim leadership;
  • And whether the leadership handover contravenes a 2022 ruling by Justice Binta Nyako.

The claimants are urging the court to declare the appointments “unconstitutional, unlawful, null and void” and to rule that they violate the party’s internal rules and structure.

This legal move comes in the wake of a significant political development.

A coalition reportedly backed by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has recently adopted the ADC as a political platform to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.

Following this realignment, Ralph Nwosu announced the dissolution of the existing party structures to accommodate a new leadership framework, a decision now being hotly contested in court.

As of now, the court has not scheduled a date for hearing the case.

Wike Is A ‘Poster Boy Of Ruin’ – Farotimi

Prominent Nigerian lawyer and activist, Dele Farotimi has taken a sharp swipe at the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, labelling him the embodiment of Nigeria’s failed political leadership.

In a strongly worded post on X (formerly Twitter), Farotimi described the former Rivers State governor as the face of everything wrong with the country’s political elite.

“Nyesom Wike: poster boy of the Nigerian ruining class. Cacophonous, parasitic, narcissistic, Lilliputian, gluttonous, myopic, and completely untouched by any desire for immortality,” he wrote, ending the post with the Nigerian flag and vomiting emojis.

Farotimi, known for his fierce advocacy for good governance and his criticism of entrenched political interests, made the statement amid growing public discourse around Wike’s controversial actions and rhetoric since becoming FCT Minister.

While he didn’t provide further explanation in the post, the reaction online has been intense, triggering heated conversations on social media.

Many users supported his sentiments, while others took issue with his harsh language.

The backlash appears to be connected to Wike’s recent comments targeting the new opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which features several prominent figures including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and David Mark.

Wike had dismissed the coalition as self-serving, claiming its leaders were “rescuing their stomachs.”

Farotimi, however, believes the coalition will make no meaningful impact if it fails to push for electoral reforms before the 2027 elections.

He warned that without systemic change, any attempt to challenge the status quo would be futile.

In his view, the coalition’s focus should be on restructuring the electoral process and ensuring the independence and credibility of INEC.

He cautioned: “The success of the coalition ahead of the 2027 elections without first implementing meaningful electoral reforms is a waste of effort.”

Farotimi also described any coalition without reform as “brainless.”

As at the time of this report, Wike and his media aides have not issued a response to Farotimi’s remarks.

Enugu Police Arrest UNN Student Over Murder Of Young Woman In Nsukka Hotel

SP Daniel Ndukwe, Enugu Police PRO

The Enugu State Police Command has arrested a 22-year-old male student in connection with the gruesome murder of Deborah Sam-Praise Ememem, whose body was discovered in a hotel room in the Obukpa area of Nsukka on June 16, 2025.

According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the suspect, identified as Emmanuel Gambo from Kogi State, is a second-year student of Material and Metallurgical Engineering at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).

The victim, a 22-year-old woman, was reportedly found in a decomposing state by hotel staff after a foul odour raised suspicions.

Investigations revealed that she had checked into the hotel with the suspect on the night of June 14.

Trouble began after the pair allegedly engaged in a second round of sexual activity, following which the deceased demanded an additional ₦15,000 from the suspect, having earlier received ₦5,000.

An argument ensued, turning violent, and resulting in the suspect strangling the victim to death.

“The suspect then wrapped the deceased’s body in a towel and a curtain from the hotel room, and hid it under the bed,” the statement read.

“On June 16, hotel staff discovered the body after noticing a foul odour coming from the room.”

In an attempt to evade detection, Gambo provided a false name and unreachable phone number upon checking in.

Despite the false lead, police detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) were able to track him down.

Acting on credible intelligence, they arrested him at his lodge in Nsukka on July 2.

During interrogation, Gambo confessed to the crime.

The police recovered the victim’s iPhone from him and later recovered other personal belongings, including a Redmi tablet and earbuds, which the suspect had thrown out of the hotel window after the murder.

A bottle of red wine, reportedly brought to the hotel by the deceased, was also found in his possession.

Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, psc, praised the detectives for their swift and thorough investigation, emphasizing the Command’s dedication to justice and public safety.

He also issued a public appeal, urging parents and guardians to monitor their children’s activities closely.

“Young people must avoid negative peer pressure and refrain from engaging in social vices,” he said.

The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue, with the Enugu State Command promising to ensure that justice is served.

Osimhen Opens Talks With Manchester United, Eyes Premier League Switch

Super Eagles star Victor Osimhen has reportedly set his sights on a move to Manchester United, signaling what could be a major shift in his career path.

According to reports from eplindex.com and Fichajes, the Napoli striker is already in discussions with the Premier League giants over a potential transfer.

Despite Manchester United missing out on Champions League football next season, Fichajes reveals that Osimhen has “chosen Manchester United as the team where he wants to continue his career.”

This development comes just days after speculation that the 26-year-old was close to sealing a deal with Turkish giants Galatasaray, where he spent the last season on loan from Napoli.

However, eplindex.com reports that Osimhen’s camp has already initiated talks with the English side, suggesting a new direction for the Nigerian international.

With his time at Napoli marred by internal issues and a surprise loan move, the forward now seems determined to move on permanently.

Osimhen’s loan spell at Galatasaray, initially viewed as a step down, turned out to be a highly productive stint, with the striker “participating in more than 40 goals” over the course of the season.

That performance has reignited interest across Europe, with Manchester United now appearing to be his preferred destination.

The Red Devils have long been in search of a top-tier striker, and Osimhen could be the answer to their offensive struggles.

As Fichajes notes, “United desperately needs a striker with goal-scoring prowess, leadership, and presence, and Osimhen fits that profile perfectly.”

Newly appointed manager Rubén Amorim is looking to revamp the squad, and Osimhen sees promise in the club’s fresh project.

The striker’s choice to prioritize a move to Old Trafford despite having options at clubs competing in the Champions League reflects the continued allure of Manchester United.

“The player’s interest in wearing red is strong,” Fichajes added, hinting that Osimhen’s motivation goes beyond financial considerations.

“The transaction costs, both in transfer and salary, remain high,” the outlet stated, acknowledging that a deal would not come cheap and may present financial challenges for United, especially under Financial Fair Play constraints.

Still, the striker’s commitment gives Manchester United a strategic advantage. “Manchester United now has the advantage: Osimhen has already made his choice, and the ball is in their court.”

Should the transfer be completed, it would mark a major statement by Amorim, who is tasked with restoring United’s status among Europe’s elite.

As Fichajes concluded, “For Amorim, his arrival would be a luxury addition to revive the team’s attack and return the team to the elite.”

For United supporters, the report is cause for optimism. Osimhen offers a long-term attacking solution, far removed from the temporary fixes and inconsistent performances of recent years.

His stint in Turkey, marked by prolific form and relentless work rate, proves he can handle the pressure at top clubs.

Choosing United over Champions League contenders also underlines the belief in Amorim’s rebuild.

His arrival would be seen not just as a signing, but as a symbol of Manchester United’s enduring pull and ambition.

Still, fans will remain cautious. The club has pursued elite strikers in the past, only for deals to fall through over fees or wages. Until Osimhen is unveiled in Manchester, nothing is certain.
