APC Chairmanship Aspirant Drags Party To Court Over Alleged Vote Inflation During Lagos Primaries

The outcome of the All Progressives Congress (APC) chairmanship primary in Lagos’ Shomolu Local Government Area has come under legal scrutiny as former lawmaker and aspirant, Rotimi Olowo, has taken the party to court over claims of vote tampering and irregularities.

Olowo, a two-term member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, is asking the Lagos State High Court in Yaba to declare him the rightful winner of the May 10 primary election.

He is also seeking an order compelling the APC to present all materials used during the election.

At a hearing on Tuesday, Justice Mojisola Balogun granted Olowo’s application to serve the defendants electronically through WhatsApp, following their failure to appear in court.

The judge also instructed that photographic evidence and device printouts used for the electronic service be submitted to the court.

The list of defendants includes Ashimi Lateef—declared winner of the primary—alongside Ogalla, Lawal Pedro (chairman of the APC Peace Committee), the APC, and the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), which has already been served.

Olowo’s lawyer, Senior Advocate of Nigeria Philip Jimoh Lasisi, told journalists that the primary lacked transparency and was marred by inconsistencies.

“There were only 25 accredited voters, yet 26 votes were declared—23 for Ashimi Lateef, three for another aspirant, and zero for Olowo and 15 others. That clearly indicates manipulation,” Lasisi stated.

The case has triggered unrest in the Shomolu APC chapter, where protests erupted in May, with party members and local residents rejecting the results and accusing party officials of imposing a candidate.

Coming just ahead of the scheduled July 12 local government elections in Lagos, the suit raises broader concerns over the APC’s internal democracy and electoral preparedness.

Justice Balogun adjourned the case to July 7 for accelerated hearing.

Buhari Recuperating Well In UK After Falling Ill – Garba Shehu

Garba Shehu, former Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, has confirmed that the former Nigerian leader is currently recovering after falling ill during a medical visit to the United Kingdom.

In response to inquiries about Buhari’s health status, Shehu clarified that the former president is indeed receiving medical attention abroad.

“Following your enquiry, I wish to state as follows: It is true that the former president, Muhammadu Buhari is unwell. He has been receiving treatment in the UK,” Shehu disclosed.

He went on to explain that Buhari had initially travelled for his routine health check-up but fell ill during the visit.

“You would recall he made it known that he was going for his annual medical check-up. He became ill there, but I am happy to announce to you that he is doing well in his recovery while receiving treatment. We pray for his healthy recovery,” he added.

During his time in office, Buhari frequently visited London for medical check-ups.

These visits paused temporarily during the global COVID-19 pandemic.

One of the most notable trips occurred in 2017, when he spent over 100 days in the UK treating an undisclosed illness.

Amaechi Says Tinubu’s Leadership Making Nigerians Miss Buhari

Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has voiced sharp criticism of the current administration, saying the hardship under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has grown so severe that many Nigerians are now nostalgic for the era of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Speaking in Abuja, Amaechi stated that the country has deteriorated to the point where a simple change in government is no longer enough to fix the damage.

“Inflation is at its peak. People cannot eat. People cannot buy food. There is no money to buy food. Everything is gone,” he said.

He argued that the worsening conditions have caused Nigerians to re-evaluate Buhari’s tenure.

“Now people want Buhari to come back. What happens in Nigeria is that each new government ends up being worse than the last, and people begin to long for the previous one,” Amaechi said.

On Tuesday night, the former minister confirmed his resignation from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), declaring his alignment with the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC).

“I left APC last night (Tuesday). I never attended one meeting. The last time they invited me, I warned them. In fact, I was surprised I was not expelled. I wrote to them not to invite me again. You cannot be in a club where the majority of people are stealing and you do not say anything,” he stated.

Explaining his current stance against the government he once served, Amaechi stressed that the problem is not merely leadership but the entire system.

He called for a broader national movement to bring true change.

“It is not just about changing leadership but about fixing the country,” he said.

He emphasized the need for a citizen-led initiative rather than a traditional party-driven effort: “There is the need to start a movement, not just a party that brings Nigerians together to take over the government for themselves rather than for ‘us’.”

Amaechi did not mince words regarding President Tinubu’s capacity to govern.

“I have never believed that Tinubu is material to govern the country. I never have,” he declared.

He also criticized the government’s economic management, particularly the sharp decline of the naira.

“The dollar was about 460 or 500 under Buhari. Now it is 1580. That is more than a 100 percent increase,” he noted.

When asked whether the naira’s fall might be linked to a deliberate policy, Amaechi responded, “Whether it is a deliberate government policy or not, any government that does not consider the wellbeing of its people cannot call it a policy.”

Joining Amaechi in his move to the ADC is former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, who also announced his departure from the APC.

Their defection, along with that of other high-profile politicians, marks a significant shift in Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections, as the ADC seeks to position itself as a credible alternative to the ruling party.

Man Arraigned For Alleged Theft Of 32 Packs Of Bottled Water

Mohammed Sani has been brought before a chief magistrate’s court in Wuse, Abuja, for allegedly stealing bottled water worth over fifty thousand naira.

According to the police, Sani is facing charges of criminal trespass and theft after reportedly entering a shop without permission and stealing multiple packs of bottled water.

Prosecution counsel, Chinenye Okafor, informed the court that the case was filed following a complaint made by Mrs. Ikenla Ngozi at the Garki Police Station on June 24.

Okafor told the court that, “the defendant criminally trespassed into the complainant’s shop at Garki market after the close of market between June 19 and 24.”

She added that “the defendant stole 32 packs of bottled water valued at N54,400 and was captured in the complainant’s CCTV footage.”

The incident, as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), has now entered the legal process with the defendant set to answer to the charges in court.

Supreme Court Reserves Judgment On Edo Governorship Election Dispute

The Supreme Court has chosen to reserve judgment indefinitely in the appeal contesting the outcome of the Edo State governorship election.

A panel of justices led by Justice Garba Lawal reached this decision after hearing submissions from all parties involved.

The court said that “a date for the verdict would be communicated later.”

The appeal was filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Asue Ighodalo, who is asking the court to overturn the election victory of All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Governor Monday Okpebholo.

Ighodalo alleged that electoral laws were flouted during the election and insisted that “the PDP secured the majority of lawful votes.”

In their response, Okpebholo and the APC urged the court to throw out the appeal, claiming it lacks merit.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) also sided with the APC, calling on the court to dismiss the case.

INEC argued that “Ighodalo and the PDP had labelled the entire election process unlawful due to non-compliance with the Electoral Act and therefore could not claim victory from what they themselves deemed illegitimate.”

Previously, the PDP’s petition had been struck out by the Edo State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal in Abuja.

Justice Wilfred Kpochi, who headed the tribunal, dismissed the case on the grounds that the petitioners failed to substantiate claims of over-voting in 320 polling units across all 18 local government areas.

The appellate court later upheld this decision.

Labour Party Gives Peter Obi 48-Hour Resignation Ultimatum Over Coalition Ties

A fresh wave of tension has hit the Labour Party as the faction led by Julius Abure issued a 48-hour ultimatum to former presidential candidate Peter Obi, demanding his resignation following his involvement in a newly launched opposition coalition.

The ultimatum, announced Thursday, comes a day after Obi was seen alongside several prominent opposition figures at the unveiling of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Abuja.

The coalition has adopted the ADC as its platform as it gears up for the 2027 general elections.

While some figures like former ministers Rotimi Amaechi and Abubakar Malami formally resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) before joining the ADC, Obi has yet to officially renounce his Labour Party membership.

In a statement issued by party spokesman Obiora Ifoh, the Labour Party made it clear that it had no affiliation with the emerging coalition.

“Peter Gregory Obi has received a 48-hour ultimatum to formally resign his membership of the Labour Party having officially joined the coalition.”

“The Labour Party is not part of this arrangement and disassociates itself from its agenda,” the statement declared.

Ifoh further accused Obi of holding covert meetings aimed at convincing members to defect.

“We are aware of several nocturnal meetings between Peter Obi and some of our members, lobbying them to join him in his new party. While some have resisted, we will not hesitate to demand the resignation of anyone aligning with him,” he said.

He emphasized that the Labour Party would not tolerate divided loyalty or political opportunism.

“The Labour Party is not available to people with a dual agenda. You cannot be in one party during the day and in another by night. The party must be built on loyalty and discipline, not deception and political convenience,” Ifoh stated.

Questioning the motives and credibility of the new coalition, he added, “Seventy percent of our population are young people who rejected the old order and rallied around a movement for real change. What we see in this coalition is a desperate attempt by familiar faces to return to power through the back door. It is not the future the youths voted for.”

Despite the internal conflict, the Labour Party reiterated its commitment to the core values that propelled it into national prominence during the 2023 elections and called on its members to stay focused and resist political distractions.

Seven Rep Members Dump PDP, YPP, Join APC

The wave of defections in Nigeria’s House of Representatives continued on Thursday as seven lawmakers from Akwa Ibom State announced their switch to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Among the defectors, six were elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), while one hailed from the Young Progressives Party (YPP).

Their defection letters were formally presented during plenary and read by the Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas.

According to the lawmakers, their decision to leave the PDP stemmed from ongoing internal conflicts and deepening divisions within the party.

“The bench press is to the gym what bread is to a sandwich, foundational, versatile, and essential,” one of the lawmakers added metaphorically, underscoring the weight of their decision.

The PDP defectors include Paul Ekpo, Unyime Idem, Martins Etim, Okpolu Ukpong Etteh, Uduak Odudoh, and Okon Ime Bassey.

They were joined by Emmanuel Ukpong-Udo of the YPP, who also decamped to the APC.

Explaining their move, the lawmakers pointed to both state-level and national challenges within the PDP, stating that the persistent crisis had impaired their ability to serve their constituents effectively.

Their defection follows closely on the heels of a similar move by Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno, who also recently joined the APC.

In response, Minority Leader of the House, Kingsley Chinda, expressed disappointment over the development.

He criticized the justification for the defection, saying, “The claim of divisions within the PDP was inappropriate and unlawful.”

Chinda called on the Speaker to invoke the provisions of Section 68 (1) (g) of the 1999 Constitution and declare the seats of the defectors vacant.

He reiterated his stance, describing the defections as “unlawful” and urged the House leadership to act accordingly.

JUST IN: Amaechi Resigns From APC, Joins ADC

Former Minister of Transportation and ex-Governor of Rivers State, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi, has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), declaring that Nigeria is in a state of total collapse and urgently needs a complete overhaul, not just a change in government.

Speaking in Abuja on Wednesday during the unveiling of the interim executive committee of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Amaechi painted a grim picture of the country’s current state, citing extreme inflation, widespread hunger, and alleged political manipulation of the electoral system.

According to Amaechi, “Nigeria is completely destroyed. People can’t eat. People can’t buy food. There’s no money to buy food. Everything is gone. Inflation is at its peak. And the federal government is busy going around trying to hijack the election. INEC is helping them to hijack the election.”

He emphasized that his aim wasn’t merely about removing those in power but about launching a new national direction.

“No, it’s not about changing the government, if it is about changing the government, there is no need of changing the government, it’s about changing Nigeria,” he said.

“What must happen here is that we must start not just a party, but a movement, it must be a movement that brings in Nigerians to on their own take over government, not us.”

Amaechi confirmed he tendered his resignation from the APC the night before, revealing he had long distanced himself from party activities.

“I left APC last night. I never attended one meeting, last time they invited me I warned them. I said, if you invite me to any meeting anymore… In fact, I was surprised that I wasn’t even expelled because I warned them in writing, don’t even invite me to any meeting. You can’t be in a club where majority of people are stealing and you don’t say anything,” he stated.

When asked why he wasn’t backing the current administration under President Bola Tinubu, Amaechi responded bluntly: “I have never believed that Tinubu is a material to govern the country, I have never, because now, people want (Muhammadu) Buhari to come back.”

He criticized the trend of worsening leadership in Nigeria, saying: “What happens in Nigeria is that when a new government takes over, it becomes worse than the previous government that makes people say let the previous government come back.”

He pointed to the sharp depreciation of the naira as a key indicator of the economic downturn.

“People are asking for Buhari because things were better during Buhari’s administration. Dollar was I think ₦460 or five hundred and something now a dollar is one thousand five hundred and eighty, that is more than one hundred percent,” he said.

Responding to claims that the current exchange rate might be a result of deliberate policy, Amaechi replied: “Whether it’s a deliberate government policy or not, any government that does not take into consideration the people you are governing is not a policy. President Tinubu said he is not here to make Nigerians happy.”

When pressed on whether his actions stemmed from political ambition, the former minister responded, “I have the right to be ambitious, I am not over ambitious.”

BREAKING: Former AGF Abubakar Malami Quits APC, Joins ADC To ‘Rescue Nigeria’

Former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has officially announced his resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC), declaring his decision to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the platform recently adopted by the new opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Malami made the announcement on Wednesday in a personal statement that conveyed deep dissatisfaction with the current state of governance in Nigeria.

“After wide consultations and deep personal reflection, I hereby announce my resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and my decision to align with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the party of choice for our coalition, a coalition driven by the urgent need to rescue our country from further decline,” he stated.

According to Malami, the move was not driven by personal ambition or resentment but by a profound concern for the nation’s worsening condition.

“This is not a decision made out of anger or ambition, but one inspired by love for our nation and concern for the hardship our people are facing daily,” he said.

The former minister painted a bleak picture of Nigeria’s current security and economic realities, particularly highlighting the crisis in the North.

“Nigeria is bleeding. Insecurity has taken over our homes, especially in the North. Banditry, kidnappings, and terrorism have become part of our lives while the government prioritizes politics over the safety of its citizens,” he declared.

He went on to criticize the economic conditions under the current administration, describing a deteriorating economy and growing despair among citizens.

“Our economy is in shambles. Prices of basic food items have tripled. The poor can no longer feed their families. Jobs are disappearing. Young people are hopeless. Instead of focusing on real solutions, the government is consumed by propaganda and political distractions,” Malami said.

Further condemning the state of governance, he accused the ruling party of placing politics above national interest.

“Governance has been abandoned. Appointments, projects, and policies are now guided by political loyalty and not national interest. I cannot remain part of a system that watches in silence as Nigerians suffer and die,” he lamented.

Malami described the ADC as a credible alternative built on values that reflect what Nigerians truly need in leadership.

“This is why I am joining the ADC — a platform built on the values of justice, inclusion, competence, and national renewal. I believe that through this coalition and with the support of Nigerians, we can chart a new course for our beloved country,” he added.

Addressing his constituents, Malami reassured the people of Kebbi State of his continued commitment to their welfare.

“To the people of Kebbi State, I remain your son and servant. I will never abandon you. This move is to amplify your voice, protect your interests, and restore hope to our future.”

In a call to action directed at Nigerians nationwide, Malami urged unity and courage.

“To every Nigerian, I urge you to join this movement. Let us rise above fear and reclaim our nation. Nigeria belongs to all of us.

May God bless Kebbi State. May God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

Atiku Would’ve Been A Great President – Tinubu’s Aide Daniel Bwala

Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser on Policy Communication to President Bola Tinubu, has acknowledged the leadership potential of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, saying he would have made a great president had he emerged victorious in any of his previous electoral bids.

Bwala made the remark during a yet-to-be-released interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, where he discussed the qualities of top contenders in Nigeria’s recent presidential race.

“Atiku would have been a great president, but whether he would have been greater than Bola Tinubu, I doubt that,” Bwala stated.

While offering that praise, the presidential spokesman made it clear that he believes his current boss, President Tinubu, holds an edge in leadership stature and impact.

Bwala also took a swipe at another 2023 presidential contender, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, accusing him of lacking a clear political identity.

“The problem with Mr. Peter Obi is what we call the identity crisis. Peter Obi has not defined his identity in politics, so he finds himself like an opportunistic politician,” he said.

Obi, who ran under the Labour Party banner in the last general election, has continued to attract strong support, particularly from young Nigerians, but Bwala questioned the coherence and consistency of his political ideology.
