Anambra Govt Orders Onitsha Main Market Reopening Monday, Assures Traders Of Security

The Anambra State Government has announced that Onitsha Main Market will reopen on Monday, February 2, 2026, for full economic and commercial activities, assuring traders and residents of adequate security.

The market had been temporarily closed following Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s directive after traders failed to comply with the Monday sit-at-home order issued by a non-state group.

The closure was initially set for one week, with the possibility of extension if compliance was not achieved.

In a statement on Sunday, the Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, confirmed that the one-week closure had elapsed and directed traders to resume business as usual.

He urged residents to disregard threats from non-state actors and reassured them that security agencies would provide maximum protection. Residents were also encouraged to report any security concerns via the emergency line, 5111.

Civil servants and teachers were reminded that the state’s pro-rata salary system remains in effect:

“No work on Monday means no pay,” the commissioner stressed. Parents were similarly advised to ensure their children attend school on Mondays to avoid sanctions.

The statement read in part:

“This is to inform the general public that the closure of Onitsha Main Market, ordered by Mr. Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, lapses this weekend. Accordingly, all traders are hereby directed to resume business as usual on Monday, February 2, 2026, as there is no longer any form of sit-at-home on Mondays in Anambra State. Residents are assured of adequate security and encouraged to report any concerns to 5111.”

Labour Party Pulls Out Of FCT Council Polls, Announces Date For Congresses, Nationwide Membership Revalidation

The Labour Party (LP) has announced plans to commence its congresses from March 2026 and to begin a nationwide revalidation of party membership, alongside registration of new members.

The move comes as part of a broader effort to strengthen internal cohesion and prepare for future political contests.

The decisions were reached at a joint meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) and the Interim National Committee, held in Abuja on Saturday and chaired by Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti.

The meeting resolved to implement a structured timetable for party congresses at the ward, local government, state, and zonal levels, culminating in a National Convention scheduled for later in the year.

A dedicated committee will oversee the revalidation and registration exercise to ensure transparency and inclusivity.

Additionally, the party announced the formation of a reconciliation committee aimed at engaging aggrieved members willing to return to the fold. Former National Chairman, Julius Abure, and his team were specifically called upon to “sheathe their swords” and rejoin the party.

Governor Otti, briefing journalists after the meeting, expressed gratitude to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for recognising the Interim National Committee and uploading the party’s leadership on its website in compliance with court directives.

On the issue of former presidential candidate Peter Obi, Otti said the party leadership regretted his exit, wished him well, and urged members to remain committed to building a stronger political force.

“While the party has lost some members elected under its platform into the National Assembly, and some caretaker committee officers have since been replaced, the Labour Party remains strong and resolute,” the statement said.

The party regretted that it would be unable to participate in the forthcoming Federal Capital Territory election but reassured supporters of a renewed, united, and resilient Labour Party.

Gov Mbah, The Opposition And The Politics Of Ancestry: Debunking The Ezza Distraction

By Dr. Malachy Chuma Ochie,

Let’s call this what it is: a tired, lazy, and intellectually dishonest distraction. The claim that Governor Peter Mbah is “from Ezza” is not a serious political argument; it is a last-ditch ethnic dog whistle deployed by an opposition that has clearly run out of ideas, facts, and vision.

First, origin is not performance. Barack Obama had Kenyan ancestry and became one of the most consequential presidents in American history. Leadership is judged by competence, results, vision, and impact, not by the geography of great-grandparents.

Any political tendency still campaigning on “where is he from?” in 2026 is confessing its own bankruptcy.

Second, no one, absolutely no one, has produced credible evidence to support this Ezza narrative. Not a court judgment. Not a verifiable genealogical record. Not a sworn affidavit that has survived scrutiny.

What we have instead are WhatsApp forwards, bar-room gossip, and recycled propaganda. In serious societies, allegations without proof are noise, not arguments.

Third, and this is the part the peddlers of this narrative hate, Peter Mbah is a full-born Owo man, a son of the soil in every legal, cultural, and social sense of that term.

He was born, raised, socialized, and politically formed within Enugu State. His identity is not self-declared on social media; it is anchored in lived reality, family lineage, and community recognition. You do not erase that with cheap insinuations.

Fourth, the narrative collapses under its own hypocrisy. We are all migrants. Igbo history itself is a history of movement, settlement, inter-marriage, and integration. If ancestry-hunting were applied consistently, half of those shouting loudest today would fail their own purity test.

Ethnic absolutism is not only ignorant; it is anti-Igbo, anti-history, and anti-modernity.
What this Ezza story really reveals is fear; fear of performance politics.

Since Peter Mbah came into office, the conversation has shifted to infrastructure, investment, urban renewal, fiscal discipline, and measurable outcomes.

For an opposition incapable of matching ideas with ideas, the fallback option is always identity politics. When you cannot contest roads, schools, security architecture, and economic reforms, you contest surnames and villages.

Let it be said plainly: This narrative is petty, unserious, and exhausted. It insults the intelligence of Ndi Enugu and reduces politics to gossip. Enugu people are far more discerning than that. They know that what matters is not where a leader’s ancestors passed through, but where his policies are taking the state.

If the opposition has something meaningful to offer, let them bring it.
If not, they should stop embarrassing themselves with this lousy, evidence-free, and obsolete rhetoric.

President Tinubu Returns To Abuja After Türkiye Visit

President Bola Tinubu returned to Abuja on Saturday night following a successful state visit to the Republic of Türkiye, where Nigeria and Türkiye strengthened diplomatic, economic and security relations through high-level engagements and formal agreements.

The presidential aircraft arrived at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport at about 8:55 pm.

The President was received by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike; the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun; the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle; and other senior government officials.

During the visit to Ankara, President Tinubu held bilateral talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, with both leaders committing to deepen cooperation in trade, investment, defence, energy and counter-terrorism.

At a joint press conference, President Erdoğan reaffirmed Türkiye’s commitment to increasing bilateral trade with Nigeria to 5 billion dollars, up from the current estimate of about 2 billion dollars.

He disclosed that discussions were already underway to achieve the target.

Erdoğan also announced plans to establish a Joint Economy and Trade Committee, describing it as a critical platform for expanding investment opportunities, boosting trade volumes and increasing Turkish business presence in Nigeria.

The Turkish leader praised President Tinubu’s economic reform agenda and efforts to attract foreign investment, noting that the size of the Nigerian delegation underscored strong political will to strengthen bilateral ties.

He welcomed reforms in Nigeria’s energy sector and expressed optimism about cooperation between the Turkish Petroleum Corporation and Nigerian institutions.

On security, Erdoğan pledged Türkiye’s support for Nigeria’s fight against terrorism, particularly in the Sahel region, offering enhanced collaboration in military training, intelligence sharing and defence industry partnerships.

In his response, President Tinubu thanked Türkiye for its commitment to advancing global stability and shared prosperity.

He emphasised the need for inclusive economic growth that integrates vulnerable populations into productive activity.

The President also commended Erdoğan’s role in promoting peace, especially in Somalia, and reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to regional stability across Africa despite prevailing security challenges.

At the conclusion of the visit, officials from both countries exchanged nine agreements covering areas such as the Joint Economy and Trade Committee, defence cooperation, diaspora policy, halal quality infrastructure, higher education, media and communication, education, diplomatic training and social services.

The agreements are expected to strengthen institutional collaboration and deepen mutually beneficial relations between Nigeria and Türkiye.

PDP Crisis: Turaki Camp Appeals Judgment Nullifying Ibadan Convention

The internal crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has deepened following a Federal High Court judgment in Ibadan that nullified the party’s National Convention held in Oyo State and sacked all officials elected from it, prompting an immediate appeal by the faction led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN).

In the ruling delivered by Justice Uche Agomoh, the court invalidated the PDP National Convention held on November 15 and 16, 2025, and barred Turaki and other members of the National Working Committee (NWC) that emerged from the convention from parading themselves as national officers of the party.

The court further affirmed the Caretaker Committee loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, led by Abdulrahman Mohammed and Senator Samuel Anyanwu, as the only recognised leadership of the PDP pending the conduct of a valid national convention.

Justice Agomoh held that the Ibadan convention was conducted in flagrant disobedience of two subsisting judgments of the same court, describing the legal action instituted by the Turaki faction as an attempt to legitimise actions taken in violation of court orders.

According to the judge, returning to court to seek approval for actions carried out in defiance of existing judgments was an exercise in futility, adding that the court could not sit on appeal over decisions of courts of coordinate jurisdiction.

“All decisions taken at the convention are hereby set aside,” the court ruled, dismissing the suit in its entirety.

Reacting in Abuja, Turaki said his faction had filed a Notice of Appeal and a Motion for Stay of Execution of the judgment, insisting that the ruling was largely academic pending a final determination by the Court of Appeal.

He explained that his group had approached the court solely to compel the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise the Ibadan convention, adding that the court went beyond the reliefs sought by granting orders not canvassed by any party.

“For the avoidance of doubt, this judgment is only one among several decisions on this subject matter, and the core issues are already before the Court of Appeal,” Turaki said, assuring party members that there was no cause for alarm and that the NWC produced by the Ibadan convention remained intact.

However, counsel to the PDP Caretaker Committee, Chief Ferdinand Orbih (SAN), described the ruling as a victory for democracy and the rule of law, saying the court firmly rejected what he called an attempt to secure judicial endorsement for an illegal convention.

Orbih said the judgment underscored the supremacy of the rule of law over political expediency and reaffirmed the caretaker committee’s authority to manage the party’s affairs until a valid convention is held.

The Wike-aligned NWC also welcomed the judgment, describing it as a landmark decision that reinforced constitutionalism and internal party democracy.

Its National Publicity Secretary, Haruna Mohammed, said the ruling unequivocally restrained Turaki and others from parading themselves as party leaders and nullified all actions taken at the Ibadan convention.

He added that legitimacy within the PDP could only be derived from strict compliance with the party’s constitution, extant laws, and valid court orders.

Again, Gov Mbah Named SUN Newspaper Man Of The Year

By Francis Ede,

Honour and recognition have followed the Governor of Enugu State, His Excellency, Barr Peter Mbah as if he is in a coronal festival.

Time after time he has been named as the man of the year by various national and international media houses and all of them in a unanimous agreement that Governor Peter Mbah has within such a short time of being the Governor of Enugu State showed a tremendous amount of energy and vision in the administration of the state.

The Sun Newspaper Man of the Year awards have come twice in quick succession for what the newspaper mangers and voters described as a recognition of his bold, reform- driven, visionary leadership in Enugu State and beyond.

The first one was in 2023 just some months after his inauguration into office which showed how quickly the governor was in hitting the ground running.

And now just two years after at the end of 2025 which award ceremony is taking place to day, January 31, 2026 in Lagos, Nigeria. Sun Newspaper Said its Board of Editors overwhelmingly voted for Governor Peter Mbah based on his many achievements.

“Mr Governor you have transformed education sector, lifted the health sector and developed infrastructure in Enugu State”. They also noted that he has delivered on his campaign promises to the state.

Other awards have gracefully come in between by other groups and agencies showing how unrelenting His Excellency, Governor Peter Mbah has been in his drive to deliver as
quickly as possible the much needed democracy dividends to the good people of Enugu State.

Like an eagle on top of an Iroko tree, Governor Peter Mbah has become a censure of all eyes. An Eagle on top of an Iroko presents a trescendental picturesque with both the bird and the tree reeling with magisterial delight.

It brings a sense of enduring and unclouded wonder that nothing ever compares to in Igbo symbology.

Governor Peter Mbah who expressed appreciation for the nomination and honour said that “One thing it does is that it increases expectations on us and motivates us to work hard to meet the high rating by Nigerians. We cannot afford to slow down or disappoint. It is totally out of the question “.

He also reiterated the determination of his government to change the narrative of public service, saying; “We believe that as public servants, what we do is to hold the future in trust for those who will come after us.

“And as trustees, we have to discharge our responsibilities most creditably. We must make sure that the future of these young ones is secured. That is what we are doing”.

Governor Peter Mbah maintained that all himself and his team are doing is not so that they could be praised but they were concerned about leaving a lasting impact behind.

This explains what we are doing in education, where we are building 260 Smart Green Schools, which all together translate to over 7,000 classrooms in just almost three years to make sure that our children are imbued with 21st Century skills.

In fact, for the third straight year, we allocated over 30 per cent of the entire budget to education.

“Again, if you look at our N1.62 trillion budget for 2026, which is unprecedented in the history of the South East, just a fraction of it, about 20 per cent goes to recurrent expenditure.”

So, 80 per cent of the humongous budget goes to capital expenditure. That is Again, Gov Mbah Named SUN Newspaper Man Of The Year of the sheer size of the project and investment we are doing.

“In terms of sectoral allocations, you see that the economic sector would be getting N825.9 billion, representing 51 per cent of the total budget, followed by the social sector (N644.7 billion), representing 40.1 per cent of the budget.

“Of course, allocating N825.9 billion to the economic sector is strategic and deliberate because, as I stated during the budget presentation, when we invest in agriculture, industry, and trade, we create jobs, reduce poverty, and generate revenue that strengthens the entire economy. The performance of this sector remains central to our vision of achieving a seven-fold GDP growth in Enugu State.”

The Enugu governor said in addition to other massive infrastructure already done or ongoing, his government would commence a 135.3km intrastate standard gauge rail project this year to improve connectivity.

According to him, the state also budgeted N10 billion equity contribution to the concession of Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, which he said, would see to the completion of the international wing this year to make Enugu a regional aviation hub.

He promised that his administration would increase the fleet of the state-owned Enugu Air to 20 in thus year, revealing that the coming agro processing zone in Enugu would enable the state “to process what we produce and also export them through the cargo terminal that would also be built under the concession arrangement.”

So much work within such a short space of time, and so much still on going. Truly, Tomorrow Is Here.

Congratulations Your Excellency, Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah. This Cap really fits.

FG Opens Diplomatic Talks With US Over Visa Ban On Nigerians

The Federal Government has commenced diplomatic engagements with the United States in a bid to secure Nigeria’s removal from the list of countries affected by Washington’s recent immigrant visa restrictions.

The United States announced on January 14 an immigrant visa pause impacting 75 countries, including Nigeria, a decision that took effect on January 21, 2026 and has sparked widespread concern among Nigerians seeking permanent residence or employment in the US.

Speaking with Sunday PUNCH, the Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr Kimiebi Ebienfa, said Nigeria was actively engaging US authorities through established diplomatic channels to resolve the issue and ensure the country is delisted.

Ebienfa acknowledged that visa issuance remains the exclusive prerogative of sovereign states, noting that Nigeria could not compel another country to admit its citizens but was nonetheless pursuing constructive dialogue.

“For visa issuance, it is strictly the prerogative of the issuing country, and we cannot do much because you cannot force a country to grant access to your nationals,” he said.

He emphasised that Nigeria was not alone in the latest visa restrictions and urged affected citizens to remain calm while diplomatic efforts continue.

“Nigeria is not the only country affected by the visa pause. We are engaging the US through diplomatic channels, and we are optimistic that there will be a win-win outcome,” Ebienfa added.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to safeguarding the interests of Nigerians abroad and strengthening bilateral relations with the United States.

According to Ebienfa, the ministry is working closely with relevant US agencies to address the concerns that prompted the visa pause, expressing confidence that Nigeria would be removed from the list once outstanding issues are resolved.

Retired Army General, Commanding Officer Among Officers Detained Over Alleged Plot To Overthrow Tinubu Government

A retired Army General, Mohammed Ibrahim Gana, has been arrested alongside military officers and civilians accused of allegedly planning a forceful overthrow of President Bola Tinubu’s government.

Gana, who hails from Niger State and is the Danmagayaki of Nupe, was detained a week after his son, Lieutenant Colonel Sadiq Ibrahim-Gana, was arrested by military intelligence operatives.

Lieutenant Colonel Ibrahim-Gana, formerly the Commanding Officer of 115 Battalion, Askira, Borno State, is among 35 military officers currently in custody over the alleged coup plot.

“A retired Army General, Mohammed Ibrahim Gana, was also arrested. He is said to be the one who helped the alleged mastermind of the coup, Colonel Alhassan Ma’aji, gain admission into NDA in August 1995.”

“Being Ma’aji’s godfather, they believed he was aware of the plan, although no further links were traced to him,” a military source said.

The source added, “His son, a Lieutenant Colonel, was also arrested, but nothing was traced to him as he was actively fighting Boko Haram in Borno. Many civilians, including mechanics and even a Julius Berger staff, have been detained for allegedly supporting the plot, despite having no knowledge of it.”

Earlier reports also indicated the arrest of Inspector Ahmed Ibrahim, a policeman from Taraba State, who is now in the custody of the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA).

Among the 35 detained officers are: an Army Brigadier General, 2 Colonels, 5 Lieutenant Colonels, 1 Wing Commander (Air Force equivalent of Lieutenant Colonel), 8 Majors, 1 Lieutenant Commander (Navy equivalent of Major), 2 Squadron Leaders (Air Force equivalent of Major), 5 Captains, and a Lieutenant.

Ten non-commissioned officers (NCOs), including a Warrant Officer, 5 Sergeants, 1 Corporal, and 2 Lance Corporals, are also being held.

The detainees come from across the country, including Osun, Bayelsa, Nasarawa, Niger, Katsina, Kaduna, Plateau, Kano, Gombe, Bauchi, Kebbi, Jigawa, Zamfara, Taraba, Yobe, Kogi, Sokoto, and Adamawa States.

SaharaReporters had previously reported in October 2025 that the DIA arrested several military officers in Abuja over an alleged coup plot against President Tinubu.

Despite initial denials from the Defence Headquarters, Monday’s update formally acknowledged that some of the detained officers were investigated for allegedly planning to overthrow the government.

Families of the detained officers have raised concerns about prolonged incommunicado detention, denial of access to lawyers and relatives, and poor detention conditions.

Some officers reportedly fell ill, with two collapsing due to worsening conditions while in custody.

The case has drawn political attention following reports that military operatives raided the Abuja residence of former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, in connection with the investigation.

Sylva denied any involvement and described attempts to link him to the plot as politically motivated.

IPOB Lawyer Declares February 2 Sit-at-Home Fake, Urges South-East Residents To Carry On With Daily Activities

A human rights lawyer and lead counsel for the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor, has called on residents of the South-East to disregard what he described as a “fraudulent” sit-at-home order allegedly scheduled for Monday, February 2, 2026, by a faction claiming affiliation with the group.

The directive, earlier announced by IPOB spokesman Emma Powerful, sought to enforce a total regional lockdown in solidarity with traders at the Onitsha Main Market.

Powerful had described the shutdown as a “direct, peaceful, and unified response” to actions by Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, who had ordered the market closed for one week.

In a counter statement released on Saturday, Ejiofor said the source behind the directive, operating under the guise of “Emma Powerful,” had been compromised and was acting contrary to the collective interest of Ndi-Igbo.

He emphasized that IPOB has formally and decisively disowned the false order, urging residents to go about their lawful activities without fear.

The statement read in part:
“Once again, the well-worn theatre of misinformation has opened its curtains, this time with a particularly lazy script and an insultingly predictable cast. Late yesterday, a report was widely circulated alleging that a total lockdown of Ala-Igbo had been ordered under the guise of a sit-at-home directive purportedly issued by ‘Emma Powerful,’ slated for Monday, February 2, 2026.

“Let it be stated clearly, unequivocally, and without ambiguity: this directive is fake, a phantom, a calculated falsehood. Upon careful inquiry and diligent verification, especially considering the delicate and hard-won calm presently returning to our homeland, it became glaringly obvious that the so-called ‘Emma Powerful’ platform has been fatally compromised.” Ejiofor added:

“It has been hijacked by vested interests whose business model thrives on fear, disruption, extortion, and the cynical exploitation of vulnerable communities. The peaceful global movement of the IPOB has formally and decisively disowned this fabricated publication, categorically distancing itself from the false sit-at-home order and directing Ndi-Igbo to go about their lawful and normal activities without fear.

“Going forward, the message from IPOB is unmistakable: any publication attributed to ‘Emma Powerful’ should be treated with extreme suspicion, if not outright contempt. Frankly, one cannot but express astonishment, bordering on disbelief, that at such a critical juncture, when relative peace is cautiously resurfacing in Ala-Igbo, anyone would recklessly circulate information capable of reopening wounds and inviting criminal infiltration. History has taught us, at unbearable cost, what happens when fake directives fall into the hands of violent opportunists masquerading as enforcers.” Ejiofor concluded:

“It is therefore no longer sufficient to merely advise our people to ‘ignore’ publications from this source. The time has come for greater clarity and firmness. The platform known as ‘Emma Powerful,’ in its current corrupted state, has positioned itself as an adversary to Ala-Igbo’s peace, progress, and collective well-being. A masquerade that dances with fire should not be mistaken for a messenger of truth.”

Soludo Orders Immediate Redevelopment Of Onitsha Main Market, Says Step “Hard But Necessary”

Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, has ordered the immediate remodelling of the Onitsha Main Market, describing the move as a “hard, but necessary” step to secure the future of the commercial hub.

The directive follows the market’s one-week closure.

During his last visit to the market, Soludo lamented that the once-famed “biggest market in West Africa” had deteriorated significantly, calling it “literally dead.”

Addressing traders and stakeholders at the Light House, Awka, on Friday, the governor explained that the decline was exacerbated by decades of poor urban planning and the persistent observance of the Monday sit-at-home order.

Soludo said, “The Onitsha Main Market, in its current state, is no longer functional. We have done the study. The main market is no longer what it was designed to be. It has literally died.

“I recall a time in the late 70s when the market was a model of efficiency, with wide streets allowing trucks and shoppers to move freely. Today, that layout has been replaced by chaos. If people cannot park, they cannot shop. In the late 70s, trucks used to drive into the market; massive parking spaces were provided for them. Today, that is gone.”

He noted that the market had been effectively shut for more than 260 days since the Monday sit-at-home ritual began, resulting in billions of naira lost weekly and driving customers to alternative markets in neighbouring states.

“Leadership requires taking inconvenient steps to secure the future. The closure of the market is a corrective measure to reclaim the state’s economic life. The state commissioned world-renowned experts in 2023 to draft a rebuilding plan for the market’s resurrection; a vision for the 25-hectare site.”

“This is in recognition that the future of global commerce lies in efficient logistics rather than just tiny stalls,” Soludo added.

He further said, “Therefore, the remodelling efforts align with my manifesto to create planned and sustainable markets and communities and cities. At this point, leadership beckons on us to take those inconvenient steps to secure the future.”

Following the executive directive, the Chairman of the Onitsha Main Market, Chijioke Okpalaugo, confirmed the traders’ support for the government’s vision, while requesting a short period to secure their inventory.

Okpalaugo said, “After careful consideration of the proposals presented by the state government for the revitalisation of our market, we, the leadership and traders of Onitsha Main Market, officially announce that we have chosen ‘Option 2’ as the preferred path forward.

“We recognise that leadership requires difficult choices, and we accept this path for the ultimate good of ndị Anambra and the survival of our iconic market. We are committed to the vision of a planned, sustainable, and accessible market that can once again compete on a global stage.

“However, we humbly appeal to Governor Soludo to grant us a short grace period. This will allow our members to safely evacuate their goods and wares from the areas designated as illegal structures before the commencement of enforcement and demolition.”

DAILY GAZETTE earlier reported that the closure followed the traders’ refusal to comply with the state government’s directive to disregard the Monday sit-at-home order.

Soludo had warned that the shutdown could be extended if compliance was not achieved, and security agencies had sealed the market to enforce the order.

The governor described the redevelopment as a decisive step in an ongoing effort to reclaim economic life in the South-East, noting that despite assurances of enhanced security and appeals to reopen stalls, many traders had continued to keep their businesses closed.
