Woman Drugs Nursing Mother, Abducts Two-Month Old Baby

The Delta State Police Command has arrested a 49-year-old woman accused of drugging a nursing mother and abducting her two-month-old baby boy.

Commissioner of Police, Olufemi Abaniwonda, revealed the development on Thursday during a press briefing at the command headquarters in Asaba.

He confirmed that the baby had been safely recovered and reunited with his parents.

According to Abaniwonda, the incident occurred during a business trip between the victim and the suspect, identified as Mrs. Joy, from Koko to Warri.

He said, “On 7/4/2025 at about 1000 hours, the DPO of Ekpan Police Station received a complaint that a woman (name withheld), aged 20, had embarked on a business trip on 16 February 2025 with one Mrs. Joy from Koko to Warri, Delta.”

During the trip, the suspect allegedly laced a juice drink with a sedative, which she offered to the young mother.

After consuming the drink, the victim fell asleep, enabling the suspect to escape with her infant son.

Abaniwonda explained that the police acted swiftly upon receiving the report.

He said, “The DPO of Ekpan Police Station, acting on the information received, launched an intelligence-led investigation, trailed, and arrested the 49-year-old suspect.”

He added, “After discreet interrogation, the suspect confessed that she was indeed the one who stole the baby. The baby, who is now five months old, has been rescued and handed over to his parents. The suspect is in custody, and investigation is ongoing.”

Police say further updates will follow as investigations continue.

2025 UTME: JAMB Withholds Results Of Candidates Linked To WhatsApp Group

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has confirmed it is withholding the results of certain candidates who took part in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) due to their involvement in a WhatsApp group linked to exam malpractice.

Speaking during an X Spaces session, JAMB’s spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin, disclosed that the board discovered the existence of a WhatsApp group created for the purpose of soliciting money in exchange for inflated UTME scores.

Benjamin explained the situation in response to a candidate who queried why his UTME result had not been released.

“He belongs to a category of candidates that we discovered were in a WhatsApp group where someone was soliciting for payment, that if you pay certain amount, your score will be inflated,” he said.

“So, we went into that group, and all candidates that paid money or patronized that group, we harvested their registration number and withheld their results.”

According to him, the board’s decision was rooted in its commitment to promoting integrity in the education system.

“The essence is that if we are bringing up credible Nigerians, whoever patronises fraud and wants to inflate his score… It’s not possible to even inflate scores.”

“The fact that you are there and thinking of that is also a crime. That is why their results were not released,” Benjamin added.

Enugu Govt Commends Youths For Outstanding Participation In Tech Festival

Commissioner Ezeh,

The Enugu State Government has praised the youth of the state for their massive turnout and impactful contributions to the success of the recently concluded Enugu Tech Festival (ETF 2025).

Dr. Lawrence Ezeh, the Commissioner for Innovation, Science and Technology, expressed this appreciation on Thursday in Enugu while delivering a preliminary report on the event.

The three-day tech-driven festival, themed “Coal to Code,” ran from May 7 to May 9, 2025, and attracted a wide range of participants including federal ministers, top tech innovators, entrepreneurs, investors, exhibitors, and government officials.

These stakeholders delivered talks encouraging young people to embrace innovation and technology.

“According to Ezeh, I have to give thumbs up to youths in Enugu State as they have proven quite well that they are highly interested in tech and innovation,” he said.

He revealed that the festival had a total of 15,000 registered youths, many of whom covered their own transportation costs to attend, remained present until the end of each day’s events, and listened attentively to gain knowledge and insight.

To manage the large crowd, the ministry relied on the support of 250 youth volunteers and 90 ETF brand ambassadors, who worked diligently and without compensation throughout the event’s duration.

“For the first day, we recorded an overwhelming 15,000 youths converging at the venue, which put some level of strains on resources at the centre,” the commissioner explained.

“The second day, we had over 6,000; and same number on the third day. They remained patient and attentively throughout the duration of the festival,” he added.

Dr. Ezeh also commended the organization of the festival, noting that essential logistics such as electricity and medical services were efficiently handled.

He stated, “There was a standby ambulance and para-medics on ground.”

Reflecting on the conduct and enthusiasm of the participants, Ezeh highlighted the youth’s growing interest in meaningful development and long-term goals.

He said, “Previously, you only see youths going to places to have fun and join in a musical jamborees and other places where freebies and political largesse are shared.

“But we have seen the reverse; and this is a good development for the state and entire country as our youths’ orientation is now on positive engagement and focusing on the real deal.

“We assured them training, which we have started to link them up to.

“They will be attached them to tech and innovative mentors while the festival provided the opportunities for them to network and connect with youths with same progressive mind and passion.”

The Commissioner emphasized that the state government is committed to nurturing this newfound passion by supporting further training, mentorship, and platforms for innovation-driven collaboration among young people.

JAMB Glitch: Nzuko Umunna Urges Immediate Release Of Resit Exam Scores

Nzuko Umunna, a pan-Igbo socio-economic and political advocacy group, has called on the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to ensure that scores from the rescheduled UTME examinations are displayed immediately after the tests held on May 16 and May 17.

The resit was organized following JAMB’s admission of “technical glitches” that affected the conduct of the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), particularly in parts of the South-East and Lagos State.

In a statement issued on Friday in Enugu and jointly signed by the group’s President, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, and Executive Secretary, Dr. Uju Agomoh, Nzuko Umunna stressed the need for transparency in the handling of the resit process.

The statement was titled: “JAMB’s glitch controversy: Transparency and Fairness in the Administration of Examinations and Examination Results for South Eastern Students.”

The group expressed deep concern over what it described as a troubling episode involving the UTME results of candidates from the South-East, saying the issue “has not gone unnoticed.”

“According to the statement, some of us in the academia and other realms have been networking to ensure that the now notorious ‘glitch’ is not allowed to truncate the future of our children,” the group said.

“We figured that if we let this one go unchallenged, they will do it for WAEC and NECO examinations soon.”

Nzuko Umunna acknowledged the apology issued by the JAMB Registrar over the mishap but criticized the decision to schedule the resit exams less than 48 hours after JAMB publicly accepted responsibility.

“We appreciate the apology tendered by JAMB Registrar, but are concerned about the fixing of the retake or resit exams less than 48 hours after JAMB’s admission of blame for the fiascos.”

“Given that many of our children are currently retaking the examination as at today, May 16, 2025, we strongly insist that no such occurrence should happen in future.”

The group further urged the examination body to adopt an automatic score display system immediately after candidates complete the Computer-Based Test (CBT).

“Also, we urge that JAMB should ensure instant UTME score display at the end of the exam,” the statement read.

Nzuko Umunna emphasized that since UTME is a CBT, there is no justification for delaying result releases.

“It noted that this feature is standard in many global tests like GRE, GMAT, and TOEFL, adding that Nigerian candidates deserve the same level of dignity and clarity.”

“Displaying scores immediately after the exam ends will: promote transparency and trust; reduce suspicion and controversy; ensure that any errors or discrepancies are spotted early and help students take responsibility for their performance or contest it, if necessary,” the group concluded.

Local Automobile Industry Patronage Bill Scales Second Reading

The Senate on Thursday took a significant step toward bolstering Nigeria’s local automobile sector as the Local Automobile Industry Patronage Bill, 2025 passed its second reading.

The bill, sponsored by Senator Patrick Ndubueze (APC–Imo), aims to prioritize indigenous manufacturers and companies in the procurement of goods and services by Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) of government.

Leading the debate on the bill’s general principles, Ndubueze said the legislation would “make it mandatory for Ministries, Departments and Agencies to give priorities to local manufacturers and indigenous companies in the procurement of goods and services.”

He added that the bill would also “prohibit the exclusion of locally produced goods in the procurement process and for related matters.”

Ndubueze argued that sustained economic growth depends on deliberate policies that support local production.

“It is also important that goods and services are produced locally as its ripple effect is a reduction in imports and a rise in exports (Balance of trade),” he said.

He lamented Nigeria’s long-standing preference for foreign goods, which, in his view, often lack any real advantage in quality.

“This failure has and is being felt in no less a sector than our economy. Today, we see the see-sawing of the Naira and with every plunge, inflation bites harder.

“Nigeria must at this stage of our history enforce a sustainable policy on made-in-Nigeria automobiles.

“This is because imported cars continue to account for billions of dollars in forex outflow.

“One of the biggest expenses of both the public and civil service is the procurement of foreign automobiles,” Ndubueze noted.

He further asserted that reviving the local currency must begin with policies that reinforce domestic production.

“The first of which must be the institutionalisation of buying made-in-Nigeria vehicles,” he said.

Supporting the bill, Senate Chief Whip, Senator Mohammed Monguno, stressed the economic benefits of supporting local industries.

“The use and patronage of made-in-Nigerian goods would promote local industries with all the attendant effect of creating more employment and growing our Gross Domestic Product (GDP),” Monguno said.

He also referenced a recent Federal Executive Council resolution.

“Mr President, if I can refresh your memory, about a week ago, the Federal Executive Council passed a resolution to the effect that Nigerians should patronise made-in-Nigerian goods.

“That all ministries, departments and agencies of government were equally directed to patronise made-in-Nigeria goods in order to promote local industries.”

Monguno explained that the proposed bill would give legal backing to that resolution.

“So that the resolution is done through an Executive fiat,” he added.

Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau also voiced his support, stating that the bill would play a vital role in revitalising Nigeria’s economy.

“Patronising made-in-Nigeria vehicles would help boost the economy,” he said.

UK To Set Up Return Hubs In Third Countries For Rejected Asylum Seekers

The United Kingdom government has announced plans to establish return hubs in third-party countries to accommodate asylum seekers whose applications have been denied, as part of a broader strategy to tighten immigration controls.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer made the disclosure during a state visit to Albania, where discussions centered on curbing illegal migration.

The move comes as pressure mounts on the Labour-led government to address rising immigration numbers, especially amid a surge in support for the Reform UK party.

Starmer, who recently assumed office, has unveiled a series of tougher immigration measures.

These include a crackdown on legal migration by stopping care homes from hiring foreign workers, curbing the number of student visas, extending the time before migrants can apply for permanent residency, and empowering the government to deport foreign nationals with criminal records.

The announcement follows a significant milestone: over 12,000 people have crossed the English Channel in small boats this year alone, setting 2025 on track to surpass previous annual records.

The rising figures have heightened concerns, particularly as Labour promised during the election campaign to dismantle people smuggling networks.

During a press conference, Starmer confirmed that the UK is engaged in discussions with several countries about establishing the return hubs but declined to name the countries involved.

He described the proposed facilities as a vital component of the government’s broader approach to dismantling smuggling operations.

“We are in talks with a number of countries about return hubs. At the appropriate time, I’ll be able to give you further details in relation to it,” he said.

Providing further insight, the Prime Minister’s official spokesperson explained that the hubs would be used to house individuals whose asylum claims have been rejected and who may be deliberately obstructing deportation, including those who have lost identification documents.

The government believes that relocating such individuals to third countries will reduce their ability to exploit legal loopholes, such as forming new family ties in the UK, to delay or avoid removal.

The plan is aimed at speeding up deportation processes and reinforcing the government’s stance on illegal migration.

2027: Atiku Asserts Coalition Across APC, PDP, LP Against Tinubu, Parties Disagree

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has claimed that prominent figures from Nigeria’s major political parties including the All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Labour Party (LP), are now uniting in a coalition to oust President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general election.

Atiku made this known in Abuja during a courtesy visit by stakeholders from the Kogi-East Senatorial District, led by ex-Kogi State Deputy Governor Simon Achuba.

According to him, the initiative brings together political actors across party divides who are dissatisfied with the current administration’s performance.

“I want you to understand that it is up to us,” Atiku told the visiting group.

“You are leaders of your various communities. We have a coalition. All the major political parties are involved. In this coalition, the APC, PDP, Labour Party, all of us are involved. That is the way to go in confronting such an incompetent and inefficient government.”

This statement builds on an earlier announcement by Atiku on March 20, where he formally declared plans for an opposition coalition.

Standing alongside Dr. Yunusa Tanko (spokesperson for LP’s Peter Obi in 2023) and former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, who recently defected from the APC to the SDP, Atiku painted the coalition as a national response to worsening insecurity, economic hardship, and perceived exclusionary governance under Tinubu.

Beyond El-Rufai, former Minister Solomon Dalung has also quit the APC, though he has not officially joined the coalition.

Still, his public disapproval of the Tinubu government aligns with the coalition’s sentiments.

Despite these developments, Atiku’s own party, the PDP, is grappling with internal disarray. High-profile defections, such as Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State and his predecessor Ifeanyi Okowa, who have both joined the APC, have weakened the opposition.

Additionally, three PDP senators from Kebbi, along with other lawmakers from NNPP and PDP, recently switched allegiance to the ruling party.

The PDP leadership has formally disavowed any involvement in Atiku’s coalition.

Party spokesman Debo Ologunagba reiterated that the PDP remains independent.

“As a party, we have a process, and we have already explained our position in a public statement,” Ologunagba said.

“If that position changes, we will update the public accordingly.”

The PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC), after its 587th meeting, had earlier stated categorically that the party was not engaged in any merger or alliance.

“The National Working Committee, after its 587th meeting, restates for the umpteenth time that the PDP is not engaged in any merger, fusion or amalgamation talks with any other political party or interest,” Ologunagba stated.

Similarly, the PDP Governors’ Forum, during its April 14 meeting in Ibadan, rejected any coalition moves. While welcoming individuals and parties seeking to join the PDP, the governors stressed that the party would not enter into formal merger talks.

The communiqué was signed by Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed and attended by governors Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Peter Mbah (Enugu), Ademola Adeleke (Osun), and others.

Interestingly, soon after the meeting, Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom publicly endorsed President Tinubu’s re-election and hinted at a possible defection if the PDP failed to resolve its internal crisis.

Reacting to Atiku’s remarks, APC’s National Director of Publicity, Bala Ibrahim, dismissed them outright.

“The beauty of democracy is that it accommodates all forms of opinions, including those of dreamers,” he said.

“So as the ruling party, we will not wake them from their dreams. Let them enjoy it and continue dreaming.”

Ibrahim said Atiku’s political history does not inspire confidence, branding him a “serial loser.”

“The truth of the matter is that by the time they wake up, the situation that will confront them will be completely different from what they imagined,” he said.

“We are not perturbed. The APC is growing stronger by the day.”

Echoing the PDP’s position, the Labour Party (LP) also rejected claims of being involved in any coalition talks.

LP’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiorah Ifoh, told DAILY GAZETTE the reports were “false and misleading.”

“The Labour Party is not in any merger or coalition talks with anyone, individuals, parties, or organisations,” Ifoh said.

“We are aware that some individuals are engaged in such talks for personal and selfish reasons. They do not represent the Labour Party. We are not involved in any merger or coalition.”

At its May 2 NEC meeting, the LP adopted a resolution to focus on internal restructuring ahead of 2027, rather than forming alliances.

“The Labour Party is not, and will not be, part of any coalition towards the 2027 general election,” declared LP Chairman Julius Abure.

“Rather, we will concentrate on rebuilding, repositioning, re-strategising, reconciling, and expanding our membership base in preparation for victory in 2027.”

Abure further expressed skepticism about the credibility of coalition leaders, remarking, “People who cannot unite their own parties cannot lead a national coalition.”

Following denials from PDP and LP, Atiku’s media adviser, Paul Ibe, clarified that the coalition comprises individuals from across political parties, not the official structures of those parties.

“What His Excellency was referring to are elements within those parties, PDP, LP, APC, not the full party structures,” Ibe explained.

“Nigerians should be patient and optimistic about the coalition strategy.”

He described the coalition as people-driven and unlike traditional political arrangements.

“This coalition is going to be different. We’ve said it over and over, this is a coalition driven by the people. The people are at the centre of it,” he said.

“The big political players will come on board when the time is right.”

When asked about the delay in a formal launch, Ibe said the political climate under Tinubu resembled “a full-blown dictatorship,” where state institutions including the judiciary, were allegedly captured.

“They’ve turned these institutions into tools of state capture, tools for political kidnapping,” he said.

“What you’re seeing in terms of defections is nothing short of political ransom. Leaders are being taken hostage.”

According to Ibe, despite party denials, the coalition remains on course.

“Quote me on that. Everything is going well, beyond even our expectations. It’s going to happen. There’s no two ways about it. Nigerians have made up their minds about the direction they want to go, and this is that direction.”

SDP Appoints New Deputy National Chairmen, Financial Secretary

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has officially announced key appointments to its National Working Committee, naming Senator Ugochukwu Uba as Deputy National Chairman (South), Professor Sadiq Umar Abubakar as Deputy National Chairman (North), and Mr. Hussani Ado Bello as National Financial Secretary.

The appointments were made public through a statement issued on Thursday by the party’s National Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba.

Describing Senator Uba, the statement highlighted his extensive background in public service and politics, noting that he hails from Anambra State and has a strong academic and administrative pedigree.

“He was a former Director-General and later Honourable Commissioner in Anambra State under the SDP administration of the late Governor Chukwuemeka Ezeife in 1992,” it read.

Uba’s national service includes membership of the Centre for Democratic Studies (CDS) during the Ibrahim Babangida regime, where he worked under the leadership of the late Professor Omo Omoruyi.

He later represented Anambra South in the Senate from 2003 to 2007, during which he chaired the Senate Committee on Marine Transport and played a pivotal role in passing the Cabotage Act.

Regarding the appointment of Professor Abubakar, the party stated, “He is an acclaimed statistician and a holder of Masters in International Affairs and Diplomacy, and PhD in Political Economy and Development.”

Abubakar has a long-standing history with the SDP, having served as its pioneer National Secretary between 2010 and 2015.

He also contested as the party’s governorship candidate in Gombe State during the 2011 elections and chaired the party’s Convention Planning Committee the same year.

The appointment of Hussani Ado Bello as National Financial Secretary further completes the trio’s elevation to the top echelons of the party’s leadership.

“Accordingly the appointees have become members of the National Working Committee of our great party, the Social Democratic Party, with immediate effect, having been duly and validly appointed,” the statement concluded.

TikToker Remanded For Cyberbullying FRSC Official

A Magistrates’ Court sitting in Akure, Ondo State, on Thursday ordered the remand of a TikTok content creator, Mr. Emmanuel Ajibade, at the Olokuta Correctional Centre for allegedly defaming a Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officer.

Ajibade, who was brought before the court by the police, was accused of committing the offence on April 24, 2025.

According to the police prosecutor, Inspector Taiwo Oniyere, the incident took place at the Higher Height Area of Orita Obele in Akure.

He told the court that the defendant, along with others still at large, conspired to commit cyberstalking, cyberbullying, and defamation.

Oniyere alleged that Ajibade used his TikTok handle, checkers69, to “cause annoyance, inconvenience, danger, insults, and criminal defamation.”

“His actions also resulted in intimidation, enmity and hatred, ill will and needless anxiety for Ibitoye Samuel, an official of FRSC in the state,” the prosecutor said.

He noted that the alleged offences contravene Section 27(b) and Section 24(b) of the Cyber Crime (Provision and Prevention) Act, 2015.

As part of his submission, Oniyere urged the court to remand the defendant to allow for further investigation.

Responding on behalf of the defendant, his counsel, A.F. Awala, pleaded with the court to give him time to file a counter-affidavit in response to the application made by the prosecutor.

In her ruling, Chief Magistrate Olateju Odenusi-Fadeyi acknowledged that both parties had filed and argued their affidavits.

“I have listened to the affidavit and counter-affidavit of both the prosecution and the defence counsel,” she said.

“I, hereby, order the remand of the defendant in Olokuta Correctional Centre, pending the legal advice from the DPP,” the magistrate declared.

Ajibade is to remain in custody until June 27, 2025, as the court awaits formal legal guidance from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Panic As Kidnappers Of APC Chairman Detain Two Ransom Bearers, Demand Additional N30 Million

The abductors of Nelson Adepoyigi, the All Progressives Congress (APC) Ward 5 Chairman in Ifon, Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State, have reportedly detained the two individuals who delivered the ransom meant for his release.

Adepoyigi was kidnapped on Monday night at the entrance of his residence along the Ifon/Owo road.

According to reports, the assailants dragged him out of his vehicle, struck him with a plank, and took him into the forest.

Initially, the kidnappers demanded a ransom of N100 million but later reduced the figure to N5 million after negotiations with the victim’s family.

Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, Olusola Olayinka, told newsmen that a joint operation involving security agencies, local hunters, and members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria had been mobilized to track down the criminals.

However, the situation took a disturbing turn when the two men who delivered the ransom were also taken hostage.

Identified only as Bayode Loco and Isimeri, the pair were detained by the kidnappers around midnight on Wednesday.

“The two men who took the ransom to them, as agreed during negotiations, have been held by the kidnappers as I speak with you,” a family source disclosed under anonymity.

The source further revealed that the kidnappers are now demanding a fresh ransom and other conditions before releasing Adepoyigi and the two intermediaries.

Confirming the incident, the Chairman of Ose Local Government Area, Hon. Kolapo Oja, expressed deep concern.

“They (bandits) have turned around to demand a fresh N30 million before they would release the three men, including Mr Adepoyigi,” Mr. Oja said.

He appealed for calm among residents, assuring that security agencies were intensifying efforts to ensure the victims’ safe return.

Attempts to reach the state police spokesperson for further updates were unsuccessful as his phone remained unreachable.
