US Govt Cuts Harvard Funding Over Discrimination Concerns

The United States government on Tuesday announced additional funding cuts to Harvard University, just one day after the institution’s president expressed alignment with the Trump administration on several key issues.

In a statement, the Department of Health and Human Services revealed that federal agencies are pulling an additional $450 million in grants from Harvard.

This comes on top of $2.2 billion in funding cuts already announced last week. The agency cited a “dark problem” of discrimination at the Ivy League institution.

Harvard, widely regarded as one of the world’s leading universities, has challenged the Trump administration in court, accusing it of unlawfully attempting to interfere in its internal affairs.

The funding crackdown is part of a broader effort by the administration to target U.S universities, which officials claim are plagued by unchecked anti-Semitism and overreliant on diversity programs that they argue unfairly privilege identity over merit.

Despite this tension, Harvard President Alan Garber struck a conciliatory tone in a letter to Education Secretary Linda McMahon on Monday.

“We share common ground on a number of critical issues,” he wrote.

Garber acknowledged the university had embarked on sweeping reforms following “an extraordinarily painful year for our community” after the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel.

“The challenges of that academic year have led to meaningful reform and recommendations designed to eliminate antisemitism and other forms of hate from our campus,” Garber added.

However, those internal efforts were not sufficient to halt the termination of at least one major federal grant.

In a legal filing submitted on Tuesday, Harvard revealed that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) had rejected any possibility of reinstating funding.

According to the termination letter cited in the filing, the NIH wrote that while it normally permits grantees to make corrections and restore funding, there was “no corrective action possible here.”

Although Garber denied that the university was aligned with any political ideology or party, he did acknowledge a need for broader intellectual diversity at Harvard.

He also stressed that admissions were based on “individuals and their unique characteristics,” not race.

Still, the Trump administration remains unsatisfied.

In a statement released Tuesday, the Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism condemned Harvard as “a breeding ground for virtue signalling and discrimination.”

The statement also referenced the findings of Harvard’s internal investigation, which revealed that Jewish students had been targets of repeated verbal abuse, physical assaults, and intimidation on campus.

“Harvard, and its leadership group who are tainted by the egregious infractions under its watch, faces a steep, uphill battle to reclaim its legacy as a lawful institution and centre of academic excellence,” the statement concluded.

Ganduje’s Family Snubs Ado Bayero, Endorses Sanusi II As Emir

Following years of tension surrounding the Kano Emirate, the family of Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has now openly aligned with Khalifa Muhammadu Sanusi II, recognizing him as the Emir of Kano.

In a significant gesture, Ganduje’s first nephew, Alhaji Jamilu Sani Umar, was presented to Emir Sanusi for turbaning as the Village Head of Ganduje in Dawakin-Tofa Local Government Area.

The event took place at the Kofar Kudu Palace and drew a massive turnout from the Ganduje community, who used the occasion to reaffirm their allegiance to Sanusi.

This move appears to signal a decisive shift away from the family’s earlier loyalty to dethroned Emir Aminu Ado Bayero.

In 2020, under Ganduje’s administration as Governor of Kano, the same family had supported the controversial dethronement of Sanusi.

Notably, the former Village Head of Ganduje, Alhaji Sani Ganduje, also removed under the prior administration, had publicly contested the legitimacy of his ouster, adding to the rift between the Gandujes and Sanusi loyalists.

Despite past grievances, sources indicate that Emir Sanusi chose to put aside any resentment, accepting Alhaji Jamilu Sani Ganduje as the new Village Head without hesitation.

Although Dr. Ganduje was not physically present at the event, insiders confirmed that he personally facilitated the participation of a high-powered delegation from Ganduje at the ceremony, signaling his indirect endorsement of Sanusi’s authority.

Public affairs analyst, Alhaji Bashir Gentle, praised Emir Sanusi’s gesture, calling it an act of maturity and reconciliation.

“Emir Sanusi has demonstrated wisdom and knowledge. He has proved he is worthy of character who does not pay back with evil. Emir Sanusi has reflected the true spirit of forgiveness and accepted destiny as it unfolds,” Gentle said.

He also suggested that Ganduje’s actions signal a strategic political shift.

“Khalifa could have rejected the nomination of Ganduje’s nephew to pay back with evil. But he has chosen to surrender to the will of God and accepted the nomination of Ganduje himself.”

“The question many would now ask Ganduje is, why has he decided to send the nominee to Emir Sanusi for endorsement, if he does not accept him as Emir of Kano? Why would he (Ganduje) choose to ignore the person they have been supporting Aminu Ado Bayero this time?” he queried.

Three Nigerians Deported From U.S Over Criminal Offences

Trump,

Three Nigerian nationals have been deported from the United States after being convicted of various criminal offences, according to sources familiar with the situation.

Their return to Nigeria is part of a broader move by the U.S government to repatriate at least 3,000 Nigerians involved in different crimes across the country.

The deportees landed at Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport on Wednesday morning aboard a Delta Airlines flight, which touched down just before 9 a.m.

Upon arrival, they were received by officials from several Nigerian government agencies, who are expected to determine the appropriate next steps for the individuals.

Sources noted that the deportation aligns with ongoing U.S immigration enforcement, which intensified during the administration of former President Donald Trump.

That administration had implemented stricter immigration policies aimed at reducing the number of undocumented or criminally convicted immigrants.

30% Of Lagos Workers On Study Leave Abroad Failed To Return – Commissioner

The Lagos State Government has disclosed that nearly one-third of its employees who were granted study leave abroad have not returned to resume duty.

This revelation was made by the Commissioner for Establishments, Pensions and Training, Mr. Afolabi Ayantayo, during a ministerial press briefing held on Wednesday.

The briefing was part of activities marking the second year of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term in office.

According to Ayantayo, “30 per cent of the staff who were given the opportunity to further their education overseas failed to come back to the system.”

He also noted that a total of 23,420 public servants benefited from various training initiatives facilitated by the ministry between May 2022 and December 2024.

“We understand that training and capacity-building initiatives form the cornerstone of a vibrant and forward-looking Public Service, and this has remained our central priority,” Ayantayo stated.

“In this direction, the Ministry has consistently undertaken robust training programmes as a strategic tool to bridge skills gaps, enhance professional and adaptive competencies required in the State Public Service.”

Highlighting the ministry’s collaborative approach, he added: “In collaboration with leading training institutions, the Ministry has enhanced workforce productivity, ethical standards, and leadership capabilities at various levels of government.”

He reported that within the same period, more than 120 training programmes were conducted.

These included both in-plant and in-service training sessions, which catered to different cadres and skill levels across critical areas such as digital transformation, emotional intelligence, policy analysis, and project management.

Ayantayo emphasized that the ministry had also prioritized establishment matters, particularly in terms of policy development, workforce planning, service regulations, and career progression.

He concluded by affirming the ministry’s commitment to due process: “The ministry continues to ensure that appointments, promotions, discipline, and records management are guided by merit, fairness, and due process.”

BREAKING: JAMB Registrar Accepts Blame, Weeps Over 2025 UTME Mass Failure, Says 379,997 Candidates Will Resit Exam

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has acknowledged its role in the widespread failure recorded in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), with its Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, tearfully accepting responsibility during a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday.

Speaking amid visible emotion, Prof. Oloyede announced that a total of 379,997 candidates who sat for the 2025 UTME would be required to retake the exam.

The decision comes in the wake of numerous complaints from candidates and parents about technical malfunctions, low scores, and irregularities across several centres.

Prof. Oloyede, overwhelmed by emotion, was seen weeping profusely and repeatedly dabbing his face with a handkerchief as he took the blame for the situation.

“I take full responsibility for the negligence of our staff,” he stated, acknowledging the impact the failure has had on thousands of students.

The Registrar further disclosed that 65 centres in Lagos and 92 centres within the Owerri Zone, which covers the five states of the South East, are among those where affected candidates will retake the examination.

The UTME, which serves as the gateway for university admissions in Nigeria, has faced heavy criticism this year following reports of system errors and result inconsistencies, prompting this unprecedented move by the examination body.

No Politician Has Defected Like Atiku, Says Oshiomhole

Adams Oshiomhole, former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and current senator representing Edo North, has downplayed fears that the growing number of defections to the APC could jeopardize Nigeria’s democracy.

During an appearance on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme, Oshiomhole addressed the recent defection of three senators to the APC.

With these additions, the party now holds 68 seats in the Senate, approaching a two-thirds majority.

“Whether this is a danger to democracy? No, I don’t think so,” he stated.

He argued that a majority presence in the legislature does not suppress independent thinking or debates, explaining that lawmakers often take stances based on issues rather than party affiliation.

“If you’ve been following debates in the Senate, sometimes you can’t even distinguish who is PDP or APC in terms of the positions people take,” Oshiomhole noted.

He also maintained that it is common for ruling parties to seek legislative alignment in democracies, using the United States as an example.

“The US celebrates when a president has control of both the Congress and the Senate. Every government wants that because democracy, in a sense, is not only a means to an end, it is an end in itself.

“The right to contribute and the freedom to express yourself are part of what defines democracy, not just the number of parties represented,” he said.

Oshiomhole emphasized that his commitment remains to the national interest over partisan considerations.

“If you watch my contributions on the floor of the Senate, the first party is the Federal Republic of Nigeria. I’ve argued, and I make no apologies, that the total of all political parties in Nigeria, whether in or out of government, is not equivalent to Nigeria.”

“If I see a conflict between party interest and national interest, I have no difficulty in resolving it in favour of Nigeria,” he said.

Oshiomhole expressed delight at the recent defections, particularly because those who rejoined the APC were original party members.

“I was particularly excited because those who joined us today include co-founders of the APC. When a founder of a house returns to the house, those of us who have been there and missed their absence, it’s a thing of joy,” he said.

He dismissed claims that the defections were forced or manipulated, and responded to criticism over his controversial 2019 remark that joining the APC results in one’s sins being forgiven.

“It hurt me. That was mischief,” Oshiomhole said, insisting the comment had been taken out of context and twisted to stir controversy.

Earlier on Tuesday, Senators Adamu Aliero (Kebbi Central), Yahaya Abdullahi (Kebbi North), and Garba Maidoki (Kebbi South) officially left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the APC during plenary.

Their switch followed consultations with President Bola Tinubu and other senior APC figures.

The APC now controls 68 out of 109 Senate seats.

The full composition is: APC – 68, PDP – 30, Labour Party – 5, NNPP – 1, SDP – 2, and APGA – 1.

In response to these developments, the PDP has begun reconciliation efforts to address the increasing number of defections from its ranks.

Speaking further, Oshiomhole commented on the House of Representatives’ recent decision to reject a bill seeking to legalize rotational presidency.

He supported the rejection, arguing that it was inappropriate to legislate power-sharing based on geography.

“The defeat of the rotational presidency motion, in my view, is appropriate. To try to use law to enforce geography as a basis, I don’t find much merit in it. Tinubu didn’t need rotation to be president — he fought his way through,” he said.

Alleged Terrorism: Court Admits Gulak’s Death Certificate In Kanu’s Trial

The Federal High Court in Abuja has accepted into evidence the death certificate and medical report of late Ahmed Gulak, a former presidential aide, in the ongoing trial of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who is facing terrorism-related charges.

Justice James Omotoso, who is presiding over the matter, admitted the documents following their presentation by the prosecution through a witness identified only as BBB.

The defence team, led by Kanu Agabi (SAN), alongside Chukwuma-Machukwu Ume (SAN) and Aloy Ejimakor, raised no objection to the documents.

According to the prosecution team headed by Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), the evidence includes a police report from Owerri, Imo State, suggesting that Gulak was killed by gunmen believed to be IPOB members.

Under cross-examination, Agabi challenged the reliability of a video statement taken from Kanu while in DSS custody. He pointed out that “only the defendant and his team were visible in the footage.”

Responding, the witness said, “That is the procedure,” insisting it was a complete recording.

When pressed, he admitted he could not remember whether he was masked during the interview.

Agabi further raised concerns about Kanu’s prolonged detention and alleged solitary confinement.

But the witness clarified his role, saying, “Solitary confinement is not a practice of the DSS. I am not his handler.”

The defence team also argued that Kanu’s continued detention amounted to inhuman treatment.

In response, the witness said he could not speak to Kanu’s psychological condition, as it was beyond his investigative duties.

When asked about the timeline and amendments of the charges, the witness said he was not involved in drafting the charges and couldn’t confirm the dates.

Agabi described the charges as speculative, but the witness maintained that his function was limited to investigation.

Further into the proceedings, the court heard that despite several years of trial and multiple charge amendments, the investigative team had never arranged for Kanu to meet his accusers.

The witness admitted that he only delivered a letter from the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and did not arrange any face-to-face confrontation.

Agabi argued that the AGF initiated the investigation after charges were already filed.

The witness replied that he was unaware of the exact filing dates and simply acted on the directive forwarded to him.

Agabi also informed the court that the defence had requested police records crucial to the case but had not yet received them.

Awomolo opposed any adjournment, citing an earlier court order for an expedited hearing.

However, Justice Omotoso granted a short adjournment.

“The matter has international and domestic interest,” the judge said.

“I am inclined to grant the adjournment today to ensure the defence is properly heard. Please use the opportunity well; we are here for justice.”

Before concluding the session, the judge asked for clarification regarding claims that DSS had denied Kanu’s legal team access to him.

While Agabi said he was not denied access, the court raised concerns about a conflicting social media post by Aloy Ejimakor.

Justice Omotoso warned Ejimakor to refrain from unprofessional behavior and urged all lawyers to verify information before posting online, particularly on social media platforms.

The court has adjourned the matter to May 21 at the request of the defence.

A heated argument over the right of way at a lounge in Ogidan, Sangotedo area of Lagos, turned fatal on May 6, 2025, when a man was punched in the chest and later died.

The Lagos State Police Command confirmed that a 46-year-old man, Philip Ogbuehi, has been arrested in connection with the incident.

According to reports, the altercation occurred around 8 pm and quickly escalated.

Ogbuehi allegedly struck the victim, causing him to lose consciousness.

The man was rushed to a nearby hospital but was later confirmed dead.

The identity of the deceased has not yet been released.

In a separate development, police arrested 39-year-old Best Orji on April 30, 2025, following allegations that he defiled his two daughters, aged 14 and 12.

The complaint was lodged by the children’s mother, and medical findings from a Sexual Assault Referral Center (SARC) corroborated the allegations. An investigation is ongoing.

Another troubling case surfaced on April 29, 2025, involving 48-year-old Peter Onehi, who was accused of persistently abusing his 16-year-old physically challenged daughter.

Police said the report was made around 9:30 pm and Onehi was caught in the act of indecent assault.

The survivor has since been taken to the General Hospital in Ajeromi for medical care while investigations are ongoing.

Meanwhile, authorities apprehended three men: Oluwafemi Oladapo (28), Idris Mustapha (28), and Sefianu Usman (29), on May 1, 2025, for allegedly stealing a KIA Cerato vehicle.

The suspects reportedly took the car from its parking spot in Alapere-Ketu and attempted to sell it in the Oke-Koto area of Agege before their arrest.

The vehicle has been recovered, and the trio remains in custody.

On May 3, 2025, police also arrested two men, Noah Olaniyi (30) and Ojo Samuel (25), for attempting to rob a passerby.

During the arrest, a live cartridge was recovered from the suspects. While some members of the group escaped, efforts are ongoing to track them down.

Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, stated, “Investigation is in progress to arrest other fleeing members of the group.”

PDP On The Brink, May Collapse Before 2027 – Former Governor Warns

Former Governor of Benue State and senator, Gabriel Suswam, has sounded an alarm over the state of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), cautioning that the party may not survive up to the 2027 general elections if urgent internal reforms are not carried out.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television’s The Morning Show on Tuesday, Suswam pointed to deepening internal conflicts within the PDP, particularly the unresolved dispute over the position of national secretary and the ongoing power tussle between Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara.

In a stark metaphor, Suswam likened the PDP to a critically ill patient.

“For now, I would say that PDP is in ICU. Can it be rescued? Yes, if the proper medicine is applied,” he said.

He noted that discontent is growing among party members, many of whom are watching closely as events unfold.

“There is a lot of discontent within the party, and many are waiting to see how it ends,” Suswam remarked.

The former governor emphasized that the outcome of ongoing reconciliation efforts, spearheaded by former Senate President Bukola Saraki, will be decisive.

“Whether there is light at the end of the tunnel in the efforts made by Senator Saraki will be seen in the next two weeks,” he said.

“If the proper steps are not taken, the PDP may not make it to the 2027 election.”

In response to the crisis, the PDP leadership has taken steps to bridge internal divides.

The party appointed Saraki to lead a seven-member committee tasked with harmonizing strategies for its upcoming National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting and convention.

The Guardian reports that the committee’s mandate includes facilitating reconciliation among aggrieved members and unifying the party’s leadership structure ahead of crucial party events scheduled for later this month and in August.

Following a closed-door meeting with fellow PDP governors, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed reaffirmed this objective.

He stated that the committee’s work is aimed at resolving the party’s internal disputes and ensuring a cohesive direction.

“The goal is to ensure a smooth NEC and convention, promoting unity within the party as it navigates its challenges,” Mohammed said.

Other members of the committee include Governors Dauda Lawal (Zamfara), Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), and Peter Mbah (Enugu), along with Senators Seriake Dickson and Ibrahim Dankwambo, and former Governor of Abia State, Okezie Ikpeazu.
