ICPC: Yobe Senator Denies Allegations Of Irregularities In Constituency Projects

Senator Ibrahim Mohammed Bomai, representing Yobe South Senatorial District, has dismissed allegations of irregularities concerning the execution of constituency projects in his district.

The senator reacted after officials of the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), led by Mr. Laban Emmanuel, visited the site of a borehole project and a 300KVA/11KV transformer facilitated under his constituency initiatives.

According to the ICPC team, the borehole, supposedly located in Sabongari, Nangere Local Government Area, and the transformer donated to the College of Administration, Potiskum, might have been stolen.

Responding through his Legislative and Media Aide, Abubakar Madu Bukar, Senator Bomai maintained that he bore no responsibility for any alleged irregularities.

‘‘For the avoidance of doubt, a handover note shows the Contractor Giohen Global Concept Nig. Ltd. that handled the ICT Project at CAMTECH Potiskum has duly supplied and delivered the 300 KVA/11KV transformer facilitated by Senator Ibrahim Mohammad Bomai.”

‘‘However, after the delivery of the transformer, the College realizing that its capacity was not compatible with the power supply to its ICT Centre agreed with the Yobe State Rural Electrification Board (REB) to exchange the transformer with one that is compatible with the power supply to the ICT Centre.

‘‘The decision and action on the exchange of the transformer were solely between CAMTECH and the Yobe State REB, and Senator Bomai was not either involved or privy to this arrangement.

‘‘On the borehole-related issues regarding the report by the paper on incomplete work, installation of under-capacity generators (6.5KV instead of 12.5KV), and misplacement of project locations, are the responsibility of the contractor and that has also nothing to do with the Senator.

‘‘It is therefore spurious to link the irregularities on those water projects to Senator Ibrahim Bomai as those projects were awarded by the Federal Ministry of Works and have nothing to do with constituency projects of the Senator and he bears no responsibility for these irregularities’’ Senator said.

Truck Falls Off Bridge, Crushes Two Buses In Lagos

A tragic accident occurred on Saturday in the Agege area of Lagos when a fully loaded truck fell off a bridge and crashed onto two commercial buses.

According to information gathered by our correspondent, the accident, which took place around 11am, resulted in the complete wreckage of the two vehicles involved.

Personnel from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority Response Unit (LRU) swiftly arrived at the scene to manage the situation.

Confirming the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, disclosed that the truck driver sustained serious injuries during the crash.

Bakare-Oki said the accident happened along Old Abeokuta Road and involved a fully loaded truck bearing registration number GGE 624 YJ and two commercial Volkswagen buses painted in the standard Lagos colors.

He stated that preliminary findings indicated the truck driver, who suffered fractures in both hands, lost control of the vehicle while navigating the Pen Cinema Bridge.

He narrated that the truck tumbled off the bridge and landed directly on two buses stationed below.

“LASTMA Officers successfully extricated the severely injured driver and immediately entrusted him to officers of the Elere Police Division. He was subsequently conveyed to the General Hospital, Ile-Epo, for urgent medical intervention.

“In a bid to safeguard other road users and forestall secondary incidents, LASTMA personnel swiftly secured the accident site by cordoning off the area and diverting vehicular traffic.

“Thereafter, operatives of the LASEMA Response Unit promptly cleared the wreckage, thereby restoring traffic flow along the axis,” he added.

Mr. Bakare-Oki also issued a safety appeal, urging all motorists, especially truck drivers, to exercise maximum caution while driving, particularly with the rainy season now underway.

Police DIG Who Retired Last Month Joins APC, To Run For Senate In 2027

Retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) Ari Muhammed Ali, who left the Nigeria Police Force in March 2025, has officially joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) and is preparing to contest for a Senate seat in the 2027 general elections, DAILY GAZETTE has learned.

Until his retirement, Ari Muhammed served as the DIG in charge of Operations at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

His exit came under the leadership of the embattled Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

Sources confirmed that DIG Ari Muhammed has pitched his tent with the APC and is already strategizing to contest for the Nasarawa South Senatorial District.

“Ari Mohammed is equally contesting for Senate under APC in the Nasarawa South,” a source said on Saturday.

DIG Ari was among several senior officers—including DIGs Dasuki Galandachi, Rhoda Adetutu Olofu, Jonathan Towuru (representing the South-South geopolitical zone), Suleiman Yusuf, Banji Lawal Badru, and Bala Ciroma—who were retired over allegations of age falsification and violations of service regulations.

In pursuing his political ambitions, Ari Muhammed appears to be following in the footsteps of former Inspector-General of Police Mohammed Abubakar Adamu.

Adamu, who retired in 2021, has also declared his intention to run for Nasarawa State governor in the 2027 elections under the APC platform.

DAILY GAZETTE earlier reported that Adamu made his declaration during a meeting with the APC State Working Committee in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital.

Speaking at the meeting, Adamu said his decision to join the race was motivated by a “clarion call” from the people of Nasarawa.

“I am answering the call of my people who believe I can serve and move Nasarawa forward,” Adamu stated.

He further pledged, “My administration, by the grace of God, will be inclusive, transparent, and focused on delivering tangible development across all sectors.”

Pope Francis Laid To Rest As World Leaders, Mourners Pay Final Respects

Pope Francis was laid to rest today after an emotional funeral attended by an estimated 250,000 people at St. Peter’s Square.

Remembered around the world for his humanity and humility, Francis was later entombed at Rome’s Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore.

Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, who led the funeral service, praised the late pontiff for leading with “an open heart toward everyone.”

The roughly two-hour service was rich in tradition and symbolism, with more than 100 delegations, including reigning monarchs and global leaders, in attendance.

It came six days after Pope Francis’ final public appearance on Easter Sunday.

Among significant moments at the Vatican today was a high-level meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Donald Trump.

The two leaders met inside St. Peter’s Basilica before the funeral service, amid ongoing diplomatic efforts to negotiate an end to Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Across the globe, Catholics and admirers of Pope Francis gathered to commemorate his life and legacy.

In India, nuns in white and blue habits filled the pews of the Cathedral of The Most Holy Rosary in Kolkata.

In Britain, worshipers attended multiple Masses at London’s Westminster Cathedral, while in the Philippines, children offered white flowers in tribute.

The late pontiff, who became the first Latin American pope in history, left a profound impact on the Catholic Church’s 1.4 billion followers.

“He was one of the best popes I’ve ever seen. He was very kind and he was always looking for the poor, the marginalized,” said Nesta Munyoro, a 61-year-old nurse from Zimbabwe, who regularly attends Westminster Cathedral.

“He didn’t come for the good ones, he came for the ones who are lost. I wish I could be like him,” she added.

Scenes from around the world captured the outpouring of grief and respect:

  • In Dili, East Timor, Catholic believers held candles during a requiem mass at the Esplanade of Tasitolu.
  • In London, patrons at Bar Italia watched the funeral broadcast together.
  • In Buenos Aires, Argentina, mourners lit candles during a vigil.
  • In Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo, parishioners gathered for a special Mass at a local Catholic Church.
  • In Colombo, Sri Lanka, families watched a live telecast of the Vatican funeral.
  • In Quezon City, Philippines, Filipino Catholics offered flowers during a live broadcast of the funeral.
  • In Pretoria, South Africa, clergy members assembled after a requiem Mass at St. Pius X Catholic Church.

The final farewell to Pope Francis reflected not just a religious event but a moment of global unity, echoing the values he lived by — compassion, justice, and hope for the marginalized.

Labour Party Urges Nigerian Leaders To Emulate Pope Francis’ Legacy

The Labour Party’s Directorate of Mobilization and Integration (DMI) has appealed to Nigerian leaders to embody the spirit of unity and moral leadership that the late Pope Francis represented.

As world leaders gather in Rome to pay tribute to Pope Francis, who was widely celebrated for his leadership across religious, political, and cultural divides, Nigeria’s delegation, led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, is present at the solemn event in Vatican City.

Also part of the delegation are Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu Ojukwu; President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, Archbishop Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji; Archbishop of Sokoto Diocese, Archbishop Matthew Hassan Kukah; and Archbishop of Abuja Diocese, Archbishop Ignatius Ayua Kaigama.

The funeral ceremonies, held from April 23 to 25, saw millions of mourners, including heads of state, diplomats, and dignitaries, gather in Rome to celebrate the life of Pope Francis — hailed not just as a shepherd of faith but also as a moral compass for humanity.

During his tribute, Marcel Ngogbehei, Director General of the Labour Party’s DMI, called on Nigerian leaders to learn from the example of the late pontiff, whose influence was felt across different races, religions, and political landscapes.

He said, “Last week was for the masses. Today belongs to the world stage, to the leaders of nations, the stewards of policy, and the architects of the global future.”

Ngogbehei praised Pope Francis as a rare kind of leader whose authority did not stem from political power but from the ability to touch lives worldwide through compassion, humility, and bravery.

“In him, we found not a pope of convenience, but a pope of conscience. The kind of leadership we yearn for in our dear country Nigeria,” he stated.

Highlighting the pope’s advocacy on global issues, Ngogbehei recalled, “Pope Francis courageously spoke at climate conferences, challenged economic systems that marginalized the poor, and addressed world parliaments with urgency rather than platitudes.”

He stressed that Pope Francis’ message of justice, humility, and humanity was not reserved for Catholics alone but offered guidance for the entire world.

US Presidency: Trump Organization Begins Selling Branded Materials For Third-Term Bid

The Trump Organization has started selling red caps branded “Trump 2028,” sparking conversation about whether Donald Trump is seriously eyeing a third term in office.

However, under the U.S. Constitution, a president is limited to two elected terms.

The $50 caps went on sale shortly after Trump remarked he was “not joking” about the idea of serving again after two terms.

Why Is Trump Talking About a Third Term?

In an interview with NBC, Trump hinted there could be “methods” to serve beyond the constitutional limits.

“I’m not joking… a lot of people want me to do it,” he said. Still early into his second term, Trump, who would be 82 by 2029, emphasized that he enjoys working.

These are not Trump’s first comments on the topic.

Earlier this year, he told supporters it would be “the greatest honour of my life to serve not once, but twice or three times or four times,” later clarifying he was joking about the media’s reaction.

In April, his campaign store began selling “Trump 2028” hats, modeled by his son Eric Trump, alongside the slogan: “The future looks bright!”

What Does the U.S. Constitution Say?

The 22nd Amendment clearly states:
“No person shall be elected to the office of the president more than twice…”

Changing this amendment would require overwhelming majorities in Congress and approval from three-quarters of U.S. states, a difficult task given the current political divisions.

Republicans control Congress but lack the supermajority needed, while Democrats control 18 state legislatures.

How Could Trump Seek a Third Term?

Some Trump supporters believe a loophole exists: while the amendment forbids being elected more than twice, it does not explicitly block a former president from succeeding into office.

Under this theory, Trump could run as a vice-presidential candidate — possibly alongside his current Vice President JD Vance — win the election, and then ascend to the presidency through resignation.

Steve Bannon, former Trump strategist, suggested there are “alternatives” to achieve this. Trump himself admitted to Time Magazine that loopholes have been discussed, but added, “I don’t believe in loopholes.”

Meanwhile, Congressman Andy Ogles introduced a bill proposing that presidents could serve three non-consecutive terms.

However, the chances of such a constitutional change are considered extremely slim.

Who Opposes the Idea?

Democrats are strongly against any move to extend Trump’s time in office. Representative Daniel Goldman called it “an escalation” toward dismantling democracy, urging Republicans to publicly oppose the idea.

Even some Republicans are skeptical. Senator Markwayne Mullin and Congressman Tom Cole have dismissed the notion, with Cole calling it “too fanciful” to take seriously.

What Do Legal Experts Say?

Most constitutional scholars agree a third term is legally impossible. Derek Muller of Notre Dame points out that the 12th Amendment blocks anyone ineligible for the presidency from serving as vice president, closing the so-called “succession loophole.”

Similarly, Northeastern University’s Jeremy Paul stated there are “no credible legal arguments” supporting a third Trump term.

Has Anyone Served More Than Two Terms Before?

Franklin D. Roosevelt remains the only U.S. president to serve more than two terms.

He was elected four times but died early into his fourth term in 1945. Roosevelt’s unprecedented tenure prompted the formal adoption of the two-term limit with the 22nd Amendment in 1951.

Kano Govt Uncovers N28 Million Paid To 247 Ghost Workers

Governor Yusuf,

The Kano State government has uncovered a massive payroll fraud involving 247 ghost workers who had been receiving salaries under the local government system.

According to a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Umar Ibrahim Faruq, the discovery was made by a special committee set up by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to review the payroll system.

The investigation revealed that some of the ghost workers listed on the payroll were either deceased or had retired from service.

The committee’s findings come after widespread public complaints over illegal deductions from workers’ salaries and cases where some employees’ payments were entirely withheld.

In a statement signed by the Press Secretary, Cabinet Office, Mallam Musa Tanko Muhammad, the government confirmed that the sum of ₦27,824,395.40, previously allocated for the ghost workers’ salaries for March 2025, has been successfully blocked.

“In a prompt and effective response, and while further due diligence is being conducted to determine the extent of this apparent fraud and the perpetrators, the monies recovered will be returned to the Local Government Treasury,” Musa stated.

He emphasized the government’s determination to clean up the payroll system, warning that individuals found guilty would be held accountable.

“The Government remains resolute in its commitment to purging the payroll system of irregularities.”

“Individuals found to be involved in this fraudulent activity will be identified and held fully accountable in accordance with the law,” he said.

The statement also noted that the committee, tasked with considering the reintroduction of the Pay Parade system, has begun preparations for its full implementation.

“Consequently, the Committee printed the March 2025 payroll vouchers and requested all Ministries, Departments, Agencies (MDAs) and Local Government Councils to study the Payrolls and make necessary observations as a prelude to a comprehensive Pay Parade scheduled to be flagged off on Monday, the 28th of April,” the statement added.

Ghana Hands Over 231 Rescued Nigerians To NiDCOM, Including 12 From Enugu, 8 From Ebonyi, 19 From Imo, 9 From Abia, 6 From Anambra

The Ghanaian government has officially transferred 231 Nigerians, rescued from an alleged human trafficking and cybercrime network, to Nigerian authorities.

At a handover ceremony held on Friday in Lagos, the Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, confirmed that the victims, primarily young men and women, had been lured into Ghana under false pretenses and forced into cybercrime operations.

Dabiri-Erewa stressed the importance of state government support for the victims as they reintegrate.

“The largest number from this particular group is from Edo State, 76 individuals. Others come from states like Anambra (6), Delta (17), Bayelsa (13), Imo (19), Enugu (12), Ebonyi (8), Cross River (7), Abia (9), Niger (4), Akwa Ibom (3), Kogi (6), Ondo (1), and Osun (1).”

“We appeal to the state governors to work with NAPTIP to aid these victims, noting that 12 of them are minors,” she said.

She also called for enhanced public awareness and tougher enforcement efforts, highlighting that human traffickers were exploiting the ECOWAS free movement protocol.

“We must name and shame the traffickers. These are evil people. If these boys knew what they were going into, many would not have gone.”

“We need massive awareness campaigns, and the media must help us spread the message,” Dabiri-Erewa urged.

Speaking at the event, Comfort Agboko, Zonal Coordinator of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) in Lagos, disclosed that some of those rescued had been trafficked specifically for internet fraud.

She added that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had been contacted and that suspects would be handed over after internal investigations.

“We will provide immediate medical attention to victims and ensure rehabilitation through our profiling and reintegration processes,” Agboko said.

Providing further details, Dominic Mensah, staff officer of Ghana’s Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), explained how the operation unfolded.

According to him, an informant tipped off authorities that a section of an estate comprising about 50 houses was being used by suspected Nigerian traffickers for cybercrime.

“We launched a simultaneous raid Operation Rescue Shield on all 26 houses at 3:30 a.m, with support from the Ghana Police Service and National Security.”

“We arrested 233 individuals. After screening, we identified the victims and suspects, and released those not connected to the crimes,” Mensah explained.

He revealed that some victims had been held captive for up to five years, while others had only recently arrived before the rescue operation.

Mensah further disclosed that the masterminds behind the operation, referred to as “chairmen,” were based in Nigeria and coordinated activities through local agents in Ghana.

“The suspects arrested were fronting for these chairmen. They ensured that new recruits didn’t escape and carried out the illicit activities. The owner of the estate is also under investigation for aiding and abetting the syndicate,” he added.

Science & Tech Minister, Uche Nnaji Denies Role In Enugu APC Leadership Crisis, Reiterates Loyalty To Party

Minister Nnaji,

The Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, has dismissed allegations made by some individuals claiming to be stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu North Senatorial Zone, accusing him of instigating a leadership crisis within the party.

In a statement released on Saturday in Enugu, Nnaji described the accusations as unfounded and the product of “desperate utterances by persons who no longer have any recognised standing within APC.”

The Minister clarified that those making the allegations neither represent the authentic leadership of the APC in Enugu State nor speak for the party.

Reaffirming his position within the APC, Nnaji emphasized his longstanding role as a respected leader, stating that he remains “a founding member and pillar of the party in Enugu State and a critical voice for the advancement of progressive ideals across the South-East.”

He also highlighted his unwavering loyalty and substantial contributions to the growth and stability of the APC at the state, regional, and national levels, noting that they are “well-documented and widely acknowledged.”

Backing the current leadership of the APC in the state, Nnaji expressed full confidence in Chief Ugo Agballa, stating that “Agballa remains the duly recognised and authentic Chairman of the APC in Enugu State.”

Addressing the legitimacy of a recent stakeholders’ meeting, Nnaji said “It is necessary to state unequivocally that those who convened and attended the so-called stakeholders’ meeting; their purported gathering holds no legitimacy, and their pronouncements are of no consequence to official activities, leadership, or direction of APC.”

He described the gathering as an attempt to mislead the public and create unnecessary confusion within the party.

“Their claims should be disregarded by the public,” he said, calling their actions “calculated attempts to cause confusion and mislead party members and the general public.”

Nnaji also urged true members of the APC in Enugu State to remain steadfast, focused, and committed to efforts aimed at repositioning the party for greater success.

He called on the national leadership of the APC and the general public to ignore the activities and statements of individuals who “have no mandate to speak for or represent the party.”

Nnaji reaffirmed his dedication to the APC and his responsibilities as Minister, emphasizing that he would not be swayed by “orchestrated campaigns of calumny and mischief.”
