APC Denies Coercing Enugu Workers Over Party Registration

The All Progressives Congress, APC, in Enugu State has dismissed allegations that local government chairmen are compelling public servants to register or revalidate their membership with the party as a precondition for receiving salaries.

The party described the claims as baseless, misleading and driven by political interests.

Speaking to journalists on Tuesday during the membership revalidation of the party’s immediate past state chairman, Chief Ugochukwu Agballah, at Udi/Agbudu Ward in Udi Local Government Area, Chairman of the APC Caretaker Committee in Enugu State, Dr Ben Nwoye, said the exercise was entirely voluntary.

Nwoye said the turnout recorded across the state was a reflection of growing acceptance of the party, not coercion.

He stated that no government worker was under pressure to join the APC, stressing that participation in the registration and revalidation process was based on individual choice.

According to him, the opposition was behind what he called deliberate attempts to discredit the exercise through false narratives.

Nwoye also disclosed that data from the party’s electronic registration platform showed Enugu State leading other South-East states in the ongoing membership drive, with Udi Local Government Area topping the list among the 17 councils in the state.

He attributed the development to internal unity within the APC and increasing public support for the administration of Governor Peter Mbah.

While noting that some figures were still being uploaded due to network challenges in rural areas, he said available records already placed Enugu at the forefront of the exercise in the region.

Earlier, Chief Agballah, while revalidating his membership, urged party members to remain committed to the APC and its leadership, emphasising that discipline and inclusiveness were essential for electoral success.

He described mass registration as critical to the party’s future victories, noting that the strength of any political party lies in the size and mobilisation of its membership.

Agballah reaffirmed his support for the current APC leadership in Enugu State and commended Governor Peter Mbah for promoting unity and resolving internal disagreements within the party.

The event attracted party leaders, lawmakers and local government officials, which APC stakeholders said was a demonstration of renewed cohesion and momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Court Sacks Abure, Recognises Nenadi Usman As Labour Party Leader, Orders INEC Compliance

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has affirmed Senator Nenadi Usman as the legitimate leader of the Labour Party, effectively removing Julius Abure as the party’s national chairman.

In a judgement delivered on Tuesday, Justice Peter Lifu held that the tenure of Abure had expired and that the evidence before the court supported the leadership of the Usman-led National Caretaker Committee.

The court relied on the April 4, 2025, decision of the Supreme Court to declare Usman as the valid head of the party’s leadership structure pending the conduct of a national convention.

Justice Lifu also ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to immediately recognise the Nenadi Usman-led caretaker committee as the only lawful authority representing the Labour Party.

The judgement followed a suit instituted by Senator Usman, with Abure and the Nigeria Labour Congress listed as defendants in the matter.

In dismissing Abure’s argument that the dispute was an internal party affair and therefore non-justiciable, the court ruled that the establishment of the caretaker committee was a necessary step arising from the Supreme Court’s directive.

The ruling is expected to have significant implications for the leadership structure and future activities of the Labour Party ahead of forthcoming political engagements.

2027: PDP Zones Presidential Ticket To South, Clears Way For Jonathan As Ex-VP Sambo Meets Party Chair

The Peoples Democratic Party has said it is repositioned to reclaim power at the national level, following a high-level meeting between its leadership and former Vice President Namadi Sambo in Abuja.

Speaking with journalists after the meeting on Tuesday evening, PDP National Chairman, Tanimu Turaki (SAN), said Sambo reaffirmed his loyalty to the party and pledged continued support, while offering strategic advice on party unity, legality and electoral competitiveness ahead of future elections.

Turaki disclosed that the party’s 2027 presidential ticket has been zoned to the South and is open to all qualified aspirants from the region, including former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Sambo served as vice president during Jonathan’s administration.

Responding to questions on growing speculation about Jonathan’s possible return to the presidential race, Turaki said the PDP has deliberately kept the process open to ensure fairness and inclusiveness.

According to him, while the party has decided on a southern presidential candidate, it is yet to determine who will eventually emerge as its flagbearer.

He said every PDP member from southern Nigeria, or of southern extraction, is eligible to contest, stressing that the selection process will be transparent, equitable and designed to provide a level playing field for all aspirants.

The PDP chairman added that the party is focused on strengthening internal cohesion and presenting a credible alternative to Nigerians as preparations intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Police Make U-turn, Admit Kaduna Abduction After Days Of Denial

The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed that an abduction incident occurred in Kurmin Wali community, Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State, following days of denial and uncertainty surrounding the reports.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, said investigations by operational units and intelligence sources established that the incident did take place, contrary to earlier claims that it was false.

The abduction had generated widespread fear among residents after initial reports emerged, but was publicly dismissed during a meeting of the Kaduna State Security Council convened by Governor Uba Sani.

Police authorities at the time asked for evidence to support the claims.

Hundeyin explained that comments earlier attributed to the Commissioner of Police in Kaduna State, Rabiu Muhammad, and widely interpreted as a denial, were meant to prevent public panic while security agencies verified the situation.

According to the police, conflicting accounts from individuals in the affected local government area contributed to the uncertainty and delayed confirmation of the incident.

Following the confirmation, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the deployment of critical operational and intelligence assets to Kajuru and surrounding communities.

Tactical units have been dispatched, patrols intensified, and targeted search-and-rescue operations launched to locate and rescue the abducted victims.

The police appealed to the public and the media to rely only on official sources for verified information and to avoid speculation that could compromise ongoing security operations.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria in the northern region, John Hayab, had claimed that scores of worshippers were abducted in the community.

These claims were initially dismissed by the Kaduna State Police Command and the state government as false.

Rabiu Muhammad had challenged those making the claims to present a list of the kidnapped persons and their details, while the Kaduna State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Sule Shuaibu, said engagements with CAN at the state level and community leaders indicated that the reports were unfounded.

Netanyahu Accepts Trump’s ‘Board Of Peace’ Role Amid Global Interest

Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has accepted an invitation from United States President Donald Trump to join the newly created “Board of Peace,” an international body aimed at addressing global conflicts and promoting post-war stability.

Netanyahu’s office confirmed the decision on Wednesday, stating that the Israeli leader had agreed to serve as a member of the board, which is expected to comprise influential leaders from around the world.

According to the statement, the Board of Peace was initially conceived as a mechanism to oversee the reconstruction of post-war Gaza.

However, its charter, obtained by AFP, suggests a broader mandate that extends beyond the Palestinian territory to other conflict-prone regions.

Membership reportedly requires a financial commitment of up to one billion dollars for a permanent seat.

The charter describes the board’s objective as promoting stability, restoring lawful governance, and securing lasting peace in areas affected or threatened by conflict.

President Trump is set to chair the body while also serving separately as the United States’ representative.

Several countries and world leaders, including both US allies and adversaries, have confirmed receiving invitations to join the board.

France, a long-standing US ally, has indicated it will not participate.

Last week, Trump also announced plans to establish a “Gaza Executive Board” under the larger peace framework.

The proposed executive body would include Turkey’s Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan, and Qatari diplomat Ali Al-Thawadi, a move Netanyahu has openly opposed.

Relations between Israel and Turkey have remained strained since the outbreak of the Gaza conflict in October 2023, following a deadly attack by Hamas on Israel.

In a related development, a separate committee of 15 Palestinian technocrats has been constituted to manage Gaza’s day-to-day administration as part of the second phase of a truce initiative announced by Trump in October.

The committee, led by Gaza-born former Palestinian Authority deputy minister Ali Shaath, began its preliminary work in Cairo this week.

After Years Of Neglect, Enugu–Onitsha Expressway To Be Completed By April, Umahi Assures Motorists

After decades of neglect and repeated failed interventions, the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway is now scheduled for completion by April 28, 2026, the Federal Government has confirmed.

The announcement came from the Minister of Works, David Umahi, following an inspection of the project, which he described as one of the most challenging roads in the South-East.

“This road has been a major problem for years, ignored by eight previous administrations. It is only through the vision and commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu that progress is finally being made,” Umahi told journalists on Saturday.

The 107-kilometre expressway, linking Enugu and Anambra states, is being reconstructed under the Federal Government’s tax-credit initiative.

MTN Nigeria was initially awarded the project at a cost of N202 billion and is collaborating with subcontractors Nigercat, RCC, and SKC to complete various sections.

Umahi disclosed that work valued at N50 billion had already been completed by MTN before economic adjustments, including the naira’s float and subsidy removals, prompted a project review.

Currently, about 72 kilometres across four sections are under active construction.

Two sections of 15 kilometres and 18 kilometres will feature reinforced concrete, while the remaining stretches will be finished with asphalt pavement.

“The 15-kilometre carriageway will be completed in the next two weeks, leaving only the shoulders,” Umahi said.

He also revealed that the Federal Government is considering awarding SKC a separate contract to install solar-powered streetlights along the entire corridor, except where the Anambra State Government has already provided coverage.

Umahi praised the quality of work and assured that objections raised during inspections would be addressed.

“We are satisfied with the progress, and this rehabilitation will end the years of hardship faced by motorists and residents along this route,” he said.

Nigerians Spend Over N1.5 Trillion On Beer, Soft Drinks In Nine Months

Analysis shows that Nigerians spent an estimated N1.54 trillion on beer and other non-alcoholic beverages in the first nine months of 2025, driven by strong sales from major listed brewers in the country.

According to the unaudited financial statements of Nigerian Breweries Plc, International Breweries Plc, and Champion Breweries Plc for the nine months ending September 30, 2025, the companies collectively reported impressive revenue growth, largely propelled by beer sales.

Nigerian Breweries Plc, the country’s largest brewer, posted net revenue of N1.05 trillion, up from N710.87 billion in the same period in 2024. Cost of sales reached N631.23 billion, resulting in a gross profit of N415.15 billion.

After accounting for distribution, administrative, and finance expenses, the company recorded a profit after tax of N85.51 billion, a turnaround from a loss of N149.50 billion in 2024. Basic earnings per share increased to 275 kobo from a loss of 1,455 kobo.

International Breweries Plc, which operates in Nigeria and other West African markets, generated revenue of N472.57 billion, up from N343.45 billion in 2024, posting a profit after tax of N57.83 billion compared with a loss of N112.81 billion the previous year.

The company’s cost of sales rose to N311.64 billion, while administrative, marketing, and distribution expenses increased to N92.09 billion from N72.68 billion.

Champion Breweries Plc reported revenue of N21.44 billion, up from N14.02 billion in 2024, and a profit after tax of N2.05 billion, a substantial rise from N21.50 million the previous year.

Cost of sales increased to N11.14 billion, while selling and distribution expenses rose to N4.24 billion.

Combined, the three companies’ revenue totals N1.54 trillion, with Nigerian Breweries accounting for the majority of the sales.

Analysts attribute the strong performance to consumer brand loyalty, efficient distribution networks, and expanding production capacity despite rising costs and economic pressures.

Ayokunle Olubunmi, Head of Financial Institutions Ratings at Agusto & Co., noted that the market is gradually experiencing a shift in consumer spending, with some reduction in beer consumption prompting breweries to adjust strategies.

He added that investments in new production facilities, following AB InBev’s acquisition of International Breweries, signal efforts to scale operations and meet growing demand.

However, economist Ayo Teriba, CEO of Economic Associates, cautioned that high sales figures do not necessarily equate to significant economic contribution.

“Sales growth may reflect volume, but the real measure is the value created, the net output contributing to GDP. Total revenue alone does not capture the full economic impact,” he said.

Implement Tax Reforms With Compassion – Catholic Bishops To Tinubu

The Catholic Bishops of Ibadan Ecclesiastical Province have called on the Federal Government to ensure that ongoing tax reforms are carried out with fairness, transparency, and a human-centered approach, cautioning that insensitive policies could worsen the economic struggles of millions of Nigerians.

The appeal came in a communiqué issued at the conclusion of the bishops’ first provincial meeting of 2026, held at the Jubilee Conference Centre in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The statement was signed by the Chairman, Most Rev. Gabriel Abegunrin, and the Secretary, Most Rev. John Oyejola.

The bishops acknowledged the government’s effort to reform the country’s tax system, noting that the reforms, initiated under President Bola Tinubu and signed into law on June 26, 2025, have been in effect since January 1, 2026.

However, they observed that the measures have sparked anxiety and mixed reactions, particularly among the poor and vulnerable.

“The reforms must be guided by fairness, transparency, and accountability. The government should give the reforms a human face, allowing the most vulnerable time to adjust before enforcing the full scope of the law,” the communiqué stated.

The clerics warned that policies implemented without sensitivity risk deepening inequality and heightening social tensions, stressing that taxation should not become an additional burden amid rising inflation and unemployment.

Beyond tax issues, the bishops highlighted broader socio-economic concerns, urging all levels of government to prioritize security, healthcare, infrastructure, and creating an enabling environment for economic growth.

They expressed concern over the ongoing strike by health workers, describing it as “tragic and unacceptable,” and condemned the poor state of major road networks in the South-West.

Reaffirming the Church’s commitment to social justice, the bishops encouraged Nigerians to pair prayers with responsible citizenship, hard work, and adherence to the rule of law. “As pastors of souls, we call on Nigerians to resist cynicism and negativity. Prayer must go with good works. We have no other country but this,” the communiqué concluded.

Man Armed With Cutlass Interrupts Church Vigil Over Noise Complaints In Umuahia

A viral video circulating on social media shows a man reportedly storming a church vigil in Ibeku, Umuahia, Abia State, wielding a cutlass to protest noise pollution.

In the footage, the man can be seen confronting the congregation, demanding they leave, while church members attempt to calm him down.

The video has sparked widespread debate online, with netizens expressing mixed reactions about the issue of noise pollution in residential areas. On X (formerly Twitter), users weighed in on the incident:

User #mrboboskie wrote, “Noise pollution isn’t right, but showing up with a cutlass is not the solution. He should have handled it differently.”

Another, #dahtgirl_ajex, commented, “Maybe he had tried all proper channels and nothing was done. You can see he has endured enough. Churches should stop building in residential areas.”

#Joe_Bassey added, “They will see him as a villain, but the church lacks soundproofing. He could potentially take legal action and win.”
#felixherbt noted, “You would understand his frustration if your home was near one of these Pentecostal churches. Their noise is unbearable.”

The incident echoes previous concerns about noise pollution in Nigeria.

DAILY GAZETTE recalls that in October 2025, the Lagos State Government sealed multiple establishments, including churches, over excessive noise and other environmental nuisances.
