Governor Uzodimma Calls On Hoodlums Behind Imo APC Woman Leader’s Murder To Surrender

Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, has appealed to the hoodlums responsible for the murder of the state’s former APC woman leader, Hon. (Mrs.) Jenny Rachael Okonkwo, and other acts of violence, urging them to abandon their criminal activities and reintegrate into society.

Speaking at the funeral of Mrs. Okonkwo, who was tragically killed in 2022 by suspected assailants and abandoned in a bush, Uzodimma called for peace and reconciliation.

At the service held in Ogberuru, Orlu Local Government Area, the Governor expressed deep sorrow over the untimely death of Mrs. Okonkwo, describing her as a key figure in the party and a dedicated organizer.

He lamented that she was murdered not for any personal offense but because of her active role in the APC, a political act that led to her assassination.

Uzodimma assured the families of Mrs. Okonkwo and the other victims of the political violence that the state government would support them, approving N10 million for each deceased family.

He also offered to provide employment or vocational training for any of their children who are eligible or willing to learn a trade.

Reiterating his condemnation of the political violence in Orlu, the Governor stated that those behind these killings were still operating in the region, but warned that divine justice would soon catch up with them.

He urged the people of Orlu and Imo State to stay resolute, remain united, and continue supporting the APC and the state government in the face of these challenges.

Court Freezes Obaigbena’s Assets In Bank Accounts Over Alleged $225 Million Debt

A Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, has ordered a freeze on the assets of Nduka Obaigbena, the chairman and Editor-in-Chief of THISDAY Media Group and Arise News Channel, following allegations of an outstanding debt worth $225.8 million.

The court restrained commercial banks in Nigeria from releasing or dealing with any funds or assets tied to Obaigbena and his family members, including Efe Damilola Obaigbena and Olabisi Eka Obaigbena, who are also directors of General Hydrocarbons Limited, an oil and gas firm.

The action follows a lawsuit filed by First Bank of Nigeria Limited and FBNQuest Trustees Limited, seeking to recover the debt, which is linked to loans extended to General Hydrocarbons Limited.

According to the plaintiffs, as of September 30, 2024, the company had a debt of $225.8 million.

In its suit, First Bank accused the Obaigbenas of using their firm to assume a debt of about $718 million.

The Federal High Court issued a Mareva injunction on December 30, 2024, aimed at preventing Obaigbena from moving any of his assets out of the jurisdiction.

The order, issued by Justice Deinde Dipeolu, also froze bank accounts held by the Obaigbenas and ordered all Nigerian commercial banks to block any financial transactions involving them or businesses linked to them.

In response, the Obaigbenas’ legal team, Abiodun Layonu & Co, accused First Bank of overstepping by seeking the injunction after an earlier ruling from Justice Lewis Allagoa of the Lagos Division of the Federal High Court.

The December 12, 2024 ruling had already barred First Bank from taking any further action related to the dispute pending arbitration proceedings.

Your Tenure As Sports Minister “Disastrous” – Wike Lambasts Dalung

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has fired back at Solomon Dalung, the former Minister of Youth and Sports, calling his time in office a “monumentally disastrous” period.

Wike’s response came after Dalung dismissed the ongoing construction of roads in the FCT as not being real development, a comment Wike described as “an exhibition of a mind rapidly deteriorating.”

In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications, Lere Olayinka, Wike criticized Dalung’s perspective, accusing him of harboring ill-will towards the current administration led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The FCT Minister highlighted Dalung’s irrational view that road construction should not be considered development since many Nigerians do not own vehicles.

He pointed out the absurdity of this stance, noting that during Dalung’s tenure, the Nigerian national football team failed to qualify for the Nations Cup.

Wike then listed several key infrastructure projects in the FCT, such as the Saburi-Dei Dei road and the 5km Dutse-Usuma Dam road, dismissing Dalung’s claim that such development projects held no value.

He also mentioned other important ongoing roadworks in satellite towns like Kabusa, Ketti, and Takushara, which Dalung, in Wike’s view, would fail to recognize as important.

Referring to Dalung’s controversial statements as Sports Minister, Wike recounted instances where Dalung had downplayed the failure to fund the national football teams, notably during the 2016 African Women Championship and the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Wike expressed concern for Dalung’s mental well-being, suggesting that his behavior was showing signs of an urgent need for help.

INEC Rejects N40bn Allocation In 2025 Budget, Demands N126bn

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has formally rejected the N40 billion allocated to it in the 2025 federal budget, proposing instead a much higher sum of N126 billion to adequately fund its operations.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, presented the proposal during a budget defense session before the joint committees on INEC and Electoral Matters in the National Assembly on Friday.

Yakubu explained that the current budget allocation was insufficient, noting that elections in Nigeria have become increasingly complex and financially demanding.

Yakubu outlined that the N40 billion allocation would only cover a fraction of the total projected expenses, which exceed N126 billion.

He highlighted the financial strain posed by personnel costs, especially in light of the new minimum wage, and the need to conduct off-cycle elections and bye-elections in constituencies, including the Anambra governorship election.

The INEC Chairman also pointed to the commission’s reliance on intervention funds in previous years, such as N10.5 billion for the Edo and Ondo elections in 2024, and additional funds for by-elections.

Despite the rejection, members of the joint committee reassured INEC that its proposed budget would be given due consideration and appropriately allocated in the final 2025 fiscal budget.

How My Inability To Keep Quiet Landed Me In Prison – Obasanjo

Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, has revealed how his penchant for commenting on national and international issues landed him in jail under the military junta of the late Head of State, Gen. Sanni Abacha, in 1995.

Obasanjo also hinted that the quest to save Nigeria from an imminent disintegration made him to seek the Presidency in 1999.

He spoke during an interactive session with 15 young male and female future Africa leaders drawn from different parts of the continent at his Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Abeokuta, Ogun State.

A statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, quoted him to have spoken when the youth under the aegis of Future Africa Leaders Foundation came with the 10 winners of the Prestigious and Life Challenging Future Africa Leaders Awards.

Going down memory lane, Obasanjo recalled his prison experience, and the journey he said started with his inability not to always keep mute.
He said: “I joined the Army and at the age of 42, I finished my career as a military officer, but, what could I do? I was still young, energetic, and dynamic, but I was still young. So, I took to Agriculture and during that time, I went into prison and that is not what I really wanted.

“Going into Prison is really a challenge because I refuse to keep quiet. For me, if there is anything to comment on, I did comment on them, and so, I landed in prison, and that is a challenge. And, when I came out from prison the situation was bad in the country that some people felt the need to be saved and pressure started started coming.”

Obasanjo also responded to a question on the African debts, lamenting that some of the debts by some countries in the continent were reckless and outright corruption.
“Most of the debts can not be explained. Some are due to outright corruption”, he said.

He commended the participants and organisers, particularly the founder of the Future Africa Leaders Foundation, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, for hosting the 2024 edition of the programme yet again.

“What Pastor Chris Oyakhilome has been doing since 2013 is marvellous and as I said, some people will say, it is just a drop in the ocean, but, many drops in the ocean makes the ocean. I am very pleased and satisfied with him on this project and will continue to wish him all the best,” he said.

U.S. Returns $52.88 Million Stolen Funds Linked To Nigeria’s Former Petroleum Minister, Diezani

The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has officially received the return of $52.88 million in stolen funds connected to former Petroleum Resources Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke, and her associates.

The asset return agreement was signed on Friday at the Federal Ministry of Justice in Abuja, with U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard M. Mills, representing the United States Government.

In his remarks, Fagbemi praised the collaboration between the two nations, emphasizing their shared commitment to transparency, integrity, and the rule of law.

He noted that the repatriation is a key step in Nigeria’s ongoing fight against corruption and efforts to recover stolen assets, while also acknowledging the U.S.’s enduring support for good governance.

The AGF revealed that the funds, referred to as the Galactica assets, would be allocated to two significant projects.

A total of $50 million is earmarked for Nigeria’s Rural Electrification Project, managed by the World Bank, to increase access to renewable energy.

The remaining $2.88 million will fund a counter-terrorism training programme for criminal justice professionals across Africa, coordinated by the International Institute for Justice (IIJ).

Fagbemi assured that strict oversight would ensure transparency in the use of the funds, with regular reports to both governments to track progress.

He also emphasized that the repatriation of the assets demonstrates President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s firm commitment to combating corruption and utilizing recovered resources for the nation’s development.

“This agreement highlights the President’s determination to fight corruption and ensure that returned funds are used for the benefit of the Nigerian people,” Fagbemi said.

He reiterated that the repatriation aligns with Nigeria’s obligations under the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) and the Proceeds of Crime (Recovery and Management) Act (POCA).

Ambassador Mills also expressed confidence that the returned funds would be used appropriately.

He reaffirmed the $50 million allocation for rural electrification and $2.88 million for counter-terrorism training, praising the partnership between the two countries as an example of their strong bilateral ties.

Mills urged continued cooperation to expedite the recovery of other pending stolen assets to support Nigeria’s development.

Family Seeks Justice After Police Allegedly Tortured Man To Death In Custody

The family of 35-year-old Abdulqadri Jimoh, who reportedly died under suspicious circumstances in police custody in Ilorin, Kwara State, has called for justice and financial compensation from the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

They allege that he was tortured to death by officers during his detention.

Addressing journalists in Ilorin on Wednesday, the convener of the human rights campaign “Justice For Olatunji Jimoh,” Mr. Owolabi Olumuyiwa-Tayo, also asked the police to provide the cause of the death of the deceased and make the autopsy report public.

Present at the press conference were: nine-year-old Aisha Abdulqadri and six-year-old Amidat Abdulqadri (the deceased’s children), mother Adijat Jimoh (60 years), father Jimoh Alabi (65 years), elder brother Ismail Jimoh, and lawyer Olukayode Oloyede, among other members of the Balogun Fulani area of the Ilorin emirate.

The family said, “The family is crying out to the public and the Nigeria Police Force to help investigate the case so that it will not be swept under the carpet.”

“We are asking that the officers who unlawfully arrested him be punished, that the welfare and education of his two children be looked into, that the two aged parents be cared for because of their failing health as a result of the rude shock they suffered, and that the Nigeria Police Force pay for damages,” the convener said.

Olumuyiwa-Tayo, who narrated the situation leading to the death of Abdulqadri, said the deceased was lured out of his house by a co-worker, Jelili Kehinde, before he was arrested by the police.

“It is no longer news that a 35-year-old promising farmer and the breadwinner from the family of Jimoh Alabi (Olatunji Jimoh) died in the custody of the Nigeria Police Force on December 20, 2024. It was established that on December 19, 2024, Olatunji Jimoh was washing clothes at home in the Balogun Fulani area of Ilorin around 5:00 pm when his friend came to lure him out.

“Olatunji was abducted by members of the Nigeria Police Force Special Investigation Bureau (SIB) while riding on a bike when Mr. Jelili Kehinde, who had come to lure him out, alighted from the bike. The officers jumped on the bike and drove him to the police headquarters in Ilorin, Kwara State.

“At around 6:00 pm, Olatunji made a call to a member of his family, who later came to the station to find out what had happened, knowing that Olatunji owed his superior at work, Mr. Gabriel Sunday, who works at Olam Offa, the sum of N220,000.00.

“Moreover, his family was prepared to pay the amount, out of N425,000.00 sent to him by his aunt, but the police officers, one Mr. Adekunle Emmanuel Ogunshola, Mr. Emmanuel Ajiboye, and Mr. Oluwole Bamiteko, denied him bail, even after the payment was made. The family was told to come back the following morning while the mother cried profusely.

“Around 9:00 pm to 10:00 pm, a strange call was made to his sister, asking them to come to the police station. When she told them that it was late because she had a baby she was nursing, the call continued until around 2:00 am to 7:00 am. The family gathered in front of the police headquarters but was not allowed to enter until around 8:00 am, when they were called back and told the news that Olatunji had hung himself in the cell.

“The mother broke down in tears and demanded to see the cell. Upon reaching the cell, it was established that the cell was not even 6 feet, while Olatunji was taller than 6 feet. They later asked how he could have hung himself, and the police officers told them that he knelt down and hanged himself.

“They called for questioning. The family later demanded the remaining body of Olatunji when they learned that the body had been taken to the mortuary without the family’s consent.

“Around 9:00 am to 10:00 am, they arrived at the mortuary and discovered that his lap had already been dissected, and some wounds were found on his body,” he recalled.
