JUST IN: South Korea Jails Former President Yoon For Obstruction Of Justice

A South Korean court on Friday sentenced former President Yoon Suk Yeol to five years in prison for obstructing justice and related offenses linked to his controversial martial law declaration in December 2024.

The ruling marks the first verdict in a series of legal cases against Yoon, whose brief suspension of civilian rule sparked nationwide protests and political turmoil.

Judge Baek Dae-hyun of Seoul’s Central District Court found Yoon guilty of obstructing investigators and excluding cabinet members from key martial law meetings.

“Despite his duty to uphold the Constitution and the rule of law, the defendant disregarded these responsibilities,” Baek said, describing Yoon’s actions as “extremely grave.”

Yoon was acquitted of forging official documents due to insufficient evidence.

He has seven days to file an appeal.

Prosecutors had sought a 10-year sentence, while Yoon maintained that his actions were within his presidential powers.

Observers noted Yoon remained defiant in court, insisting that his martial law declaration was a lawful exercise of constitutional emergency powers intended to protect the nation and uphold order.

This verdict follows a separate case in which prosecutors have demanded the death penalty, accusing Yoon of orchestrating an insurrection through his martial law imposition.

Although a death sentence is unlikely to be carried out, South Korea has maintained an unofficial moratorium on executions since 1997, the charges underscore the severity of allegations facing the former leader.

Yoon also faces trial on accusations of aiding the enemy, over alleged drone operations targeting North Korea, further complicating his legal battles.

The court is set to deliver a ruling on the insurrection charges on February 19.

Uganda Election: 81-Year-Old Museveni Takes Early Lead As Opposition Leader Bobi Wine Placed Under House Arrest

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni appeared to be on course for an extension of his 40-year rule as early election results showed him with a commanding lead, while opposition leader Bobi Wine was placed under house arrest on Friday.

With roughly 25 percent of votes counted, the Electoral Commission reported Museveni leading with 76.25 percent against Wine’s 19.85 percent.

Thursday’s election, however, was marked by widespread technical issues, including malfunctioning biometric machines and delayed delivery of ballot papers in several areas. Final results are expected by 0200 GMT on Saturday.

Museveni, 81, a former guerrilla fighter who has dominated Uganda’s political and security structures for decades, faces criticism for suppressing dissent and opposition activities.

Analysts say the outcome was largely predictable given his firm grip on state institutions.

Wine, 43, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, has emerged as Museveni’s main challenger in recent years. Known as the “ghetto president” for his roots in Kampala’s slums, Wine and his wife were reportedly placed under house arrest Thursday night after security forces surrounded their residence.

His party, the National Unity Platform, accused authorities of unlawfully entering the compound and setting up tents within the premises.

AFP correspondents who visited the Wine residence on Friday noted a heavy security presence, though the area appeared outwardly calm.

The elections have been conducted under intense military and police deployment nationwide.

The United Nations rights office had warned that the vote was taking place amid “widespread repression and intimidation” targeting opposition figures.

Wine has alleged ballot stuffing and harassment of his party officials under the internet blackout imposed earlier this week, though these claims could not be independently verified.

Rivers Crisis: Four Lawmakers Who Called For Political Solution Make U-turn, Back Fubara’s Impeachment

Four members of the Rivers State House of Assembly who had earlier urged a political solution to the state’s crisis have reversed their stance and thrown their weight behind the impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu.

The lawmakers made their new position known on Friday during a live press conference in Port Harcourt, where they joined their colleagues in insisting that the governor no longer enjoys the confidence of the Assembly to resolve the lingering political turmoil in the oil-rich state.

At the briefing, the legislators accused Governor Fubara of blackmail, intimidation and repeated violations of the 1999 Constitution, arguing that such actions had eroded trust between the executive and the legislature.

They said the Assembly was left with no option but to invoke its constitutional powers to commence impeachment proceedings.

The lawmakers further alleged that both the governor and his deputy attempted to undermine the independence of the legislature, describing the situation as a direct threat to democratic governance in the state.

Despite their hardline position, the legislators expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for intervening in the crisis and appealed to the Speaker of the House, Martin Amaewhule, to reconvene the Assembly to allow legislative activities resume.

In a dramatic shift, the four lawmakers who had previously canvassed dialogue and reconciliation publicly recanted their earlier position, declaring full support for the continuation of the impeachment process against the governor and his deputy.

Shortly after the press conference, the lawmakers moved to the Assembly complex where a plenary session was held.

During the sitting, members unanimously voted to commence an investigation into allegations of gross misconduct levelled against Governor Fubara and Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu.

BREAKING: Fubara’s Fate Hangs In The Balance As Rivers Assembly Presses Ahead With Impeachment Move, Orders Investigation

Members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have resolved to continue impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, insisting that the governor no longer enjoys the confidence required to resolve the political crisis in the state.

The lawmakers made their position known on Friday during a live press conference in Port Harcourt, where they accused the governor of blackmail, intimidation, and violations of the 1999 Constitution.

According to the legislators, the alleged actions of the governor left the Assembly with no alternative but to invoke its constitutional powers to begin impeachment proceedings.

They also accused both the governor and his deputy of attempting to undermine the independence of the legislature.

While reaffirming their stance, the lawmakers expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for intervening in the crisis and appealed to the Speaker of the House, Martin Amaewhule, to reconvene the Assembly for legislative business.

In a dramatic turn, four lawmakers who had earlier called for a political resolution reversed their positions and announced their full support for the continuation of the impeachment process.

Shortly after the press briefing, the lawmakers proceeded to the Assembly complex, where a parliamentary session was convened.

During plenary, members unanimously voted to investigate allegations of gross misconduct leveled against the governor and his deputy.

Trump Threatens To Deploy Military Under Insurrection Act As Minnesota Protests Escalate

United States President Donald Trump on Thursday threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act, a rarely used emergency law that permits the domestic deployment of the military, following deadly clashes between federal agents and protesters in Minnesota.

The warning came after federal immigration agents shot two people in separate incidents, killing an American woman and wounding a Venezuelan national, sparking widespread protests in Minneapolis and other parts of the state.

Demonstrators have condemned what they describe as heavy-handed tactics by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during sweeping immigration raids in the Democratic-controlled state.

Protests have intensified in recent days, with crowds confronting federal agents and security forces responding with tear gas and pepper spray.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump accused Minnesota officials of failing to maintain law and order and warned of federal intervention.

“If the corrupt politicians of Minnesota don’t obey the law and stop the professional agitators and insurrectionists from attacking the patriots of ICE, who are only trying to do their job, I will institute the Insurrection Act,” Trump wrote.

The Insurrection Act allows the president to bypass restrictions under the Posse Comitatus Act and deploy armed forces to suppress what is deemed domestic unrest or rebellion.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz strongly criticised federal authorities, accusing them of carrying out what he described as an organised campaign of brutality against residents.

In a video message posted online, Walz cited incidents including the reported mistreatment of civilians and the January 7 killing of 37-year-old Renee Good.

“We must protest loudly and urgently, but also peacefully,” Walz said, urging Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to “end this occupation.”

He also encouraged residents to document interactions with ICE agents for potential legal action.

Noem, speaking at a White House briefing, said the decision to invoke the Insurrection Act rests solely with the president.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said the most recent shooting occurred during a struggle between an ICE agent and a suspect late Wednesday.

According to him, the agent discharged his weapon during the altercation, striking a man in the leg.

The Department of Homeland Security said two individuals later emerged from a nearby residence and attacked the agent with household items, identifying the wounded suspect as an undocumented immigrant from Venezuela.

Officials said the injury was not life-threatening and that two people were taken into custody.

Senior White House official Stephen Miller accused Minnesota authorities of deliberately encouraging what he called a violent insurrection, while White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt blamed sections of the media for escalating tensions.

Concerns have continued to mount over ICE’s enforcement methods, with critics pointing to inadequate training and oversight.

Mexican authorities also said they are seeking clarification over the death of a Mexican citizen at an ICE detention facility in Georgia this week.

ICE recorded 30 deaths in detention in 2025, the highest number in the agency’s history, amid a sharp rise in the number of detainees nationwide.

The Insurrection Act was last invoked in 1992 by President George H.W. Bush during the Los Angeles riots following the acquittal of police officers involved in the beating of Rodney King.

Machado Presents Nobel Peace Prize Medal To Trump In Bid To Mend Relations

Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado has said she presented her Nobel Peace Prize medal to United States President Donald Trump during a meeting at the White House, describing the gesture as a mark of respect and recognition for his role in what she called Venezuela’s struggle for freedom.

Machado disclosed this on Thursday after holding talks with Trump and meeting lawmakers at the US Capitol in Washington.

She said the presentation of the medal was an emotional moment and a way of acknowledging Trump’s commitment to confronting the crisis in Venezuela.

“He deserves it, and it was a very emotional moment,” Machado told Fox News in an interview after the meeting.

The development comes amid strained relations between the two leaders following Trump’s decision not to openly back Machado after the January 3 US military operation that led to the capture of former Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro.

Trump has since appeared to favour Maduro’s former vice president, Delcy Rodriguez, provided she aligns with Washington’s interests, particularly regarding access to Venezuela’s vast oil resources.

Speaking to reporters outside the US Capitol, Machado said she had personally presented the Nobel Peace Prize medal to the US president, describing it as recognition of his “unique commitment” to the freedom of Venezuelans.

It remains unclear whether Trump retained the medal after the closed-door meeting, as the Norwegian Nobel Committee maintains that Nobel prizes are not transferable.

Trump had previously expressed disappointment at not winning the Nobel Peace Prize, arguing that his efforts to end multiple global conflicts deserved the award.

Instead, the prize was awarded to Machado, who travelled to Oslo last month to receive it after a dramatic escape from Venezuela by boat.

She later dedicated the award to Trump.
Washington has backed claims by Venezuela’s opposition that Maduro rigged the 2024 presidential election against the candidate supported by Machado, Edmundo González Urrutia.

Despite this, Trump has argued that Machado lacks sufficient domestic support and has opted to work with Rodriguez as Venezuela’s interim leader.

Trump and Rodriguez held their first telephone conversation on Wednesday, with the White House saying the president was encouraged by developments under the interim leadership.

Rodriguez, however, said her government was not afraid of diplomatic confrontation with Washington.

While Rodriguez delivered Maduro’s state-of-the-nation address to Venezuela’s parliament, with the former leader now in a New York jail facing drug trafficking charges, Machado was welcomed by cheering supporters as she exited the White House.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt described Machado as a courageous voice for many Venezuelans and said Trump remained committed to seeing democratic elections in the country, though she did not provide a timeline.

Since Maduro’s capture, the United States has intensified pressure on Venezuela, including the seizure of a sixth oil tanker as part of efforts to control the country’s energy exports.

US officials also confirmed the completion of the first US-brokered sale of Venezuelan oil, valued at about $500 million.

Rodriguez has announced plans to reform Venezuela’s oil sector laws, which currently restrict foreign participation, though details have yet to be released.

Washington has welcomed the release of several political prisoners in recent days, while noting that many remain in detention.

Meanwhile, the aftermath of the US operation in Venezuela continues to ripple across the region, with Cuba on Thursday honouring soldiers killed during the raid that led to Maduro’s capture.

Alleged $4.5bn Fraud: EFCC Pressured My Client To Implicate Emefiele, Lawyer Tells Court

A defence lawyer on Thursday alleged before the Lagos State High Court that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) pressured his client to implicate former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, in the ongoing trial over alleged $4.5 billion fraud.

Mr. Nnamdi Offial, counsel to the second defendant, Henry Omoile, made the allegation while testifying in a trial-within-trial ordered by Justice Rahman Oshodi to determine whether Omoile’s statement to the EFCC was made voluntarily.

Offial told the court that EFCC investigators allegedly promised his client bail and possible exemption from prosecution if he cooperated by providing incriminating information against Emefiele.

Emefiele and Omoile are standing trial on charges bordering on accepting gratification, receiving gifts through agents, corruption and fraudulent receipt of property.

The EFCC also accused them of conferring corrupt advantage on associates, contrary to the Corrupt Practices Act, 2000. Both defendants have pleaded not guilty to the charges.

According to Offial, the head of the EFCC interrogation team repeatedly assured Omoile of leniency if he implicated the former apex bank governor.

He said the interrogation process was conducted in a rigid question-and-answer format, during which his client was only allowed to write responses that aligned with the investigators’ expectations.

“On several occasions, questions were put to the second defendant and he answered, but he was not allowed to write them down because the answers did not conform to what the interrogators wanted him to say. I objected to this many times,” Offial testified.

The lawyer further alleged that on February 26, 2024, the interrogation session ended with investigators informing him that Omoile would remain in detention because they were not done with him.

He also narrated an incident the following day, February 27, 2024, when he questioned why his client was being interrogated in his absence, a situation he said resulted in a confrontation with one of the officers, identified as Davide, who allegedly ordered him to leave the premises.

“I reported the incident to the head of the team, who advised me not to worry and to sit in the waiting area. I was not allowed to render services to my client until about 8pm, when he was taken back to the detention centre,” Offial said.

He added that he later discovered his client was being detained for refusing to cooperate with investigators, prompting him to apply for bail from the EFCC zonal head.

Offial told the court that Omoile spent 21 days in detention before filing a fundamental rights enforcement suit at the Federal High Court in Lagos.

He said Justice Muslim Hassan eventually granted bail but ordered that Omoile be remanded at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre pending the perfection of bail conditions.

However, under cross-examination by prosecution counsel, Mr. Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, Offial admitted that Omoile was cautioned in his presence and that he signed the caution.

He also acknowledged participating in the statement-taking process and confirmed that he was aware any statement made by his client could be used against him in court.

The defence witness further conceded that he did not file any petition against the EFCC over the alleged misconduct and that the Federal High Court did not indict the commission in the fundamental rights suit.

He also admitted that his client was not harassed in his presence during interrogation.

Justice Oshodi subsequently adjourned the matter until January 16 for the continuation of the trial-within-trial.

Biafra Group Removes Simon Ekpa As Leader, Names Replacement

The Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE) has announced the removal of Simon Ekpa as its leader following his detention in Finland, appointing Ogechukwu Nkere as his replacement.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday, which confirmed that Nkere emerged as the new Prime Minister of BRGIE after a unanimous decision by the group’s cabinet on January 14, 2026.

According to the statement, Ekpa was formally relieved of his position by the cabinet, paving the way for Nkere’s emergence as Prime Minister.

“Ogechukwu Nkere has been unanimously elected by the cabinet of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE) to serve as Prime Minister, succeeding Simon Ekpa Njoku, who was relieved of his position,” the statement said.

Before his confirmation, Nkere had been serving as Acting Prime Minister since December 2024, a role he assumed following Ekpa’s detention in Finland.

He also previously served as the organisation’s finance minister and was for several years BRGIE’s representative in Washington, DC.

The statement noted that during his time in the United States, Nkere engaged extensively with U.S government officials and policymakers, working alongside BRGIE lobbyists.

It added that his engagements included meetings with senior political figures such as Senator Ted Cruz and Speaker of the House Mike Johnson.

BRGIE described Nkere’s election as a move aimed at ensuring continuity in leadership and strengthening its international engagements amid ongoing legal challenges facing its former leader.

DAILY GAZETTE recall that Simon Ekpa, a prominent Biafran separatist figure, was sentenced in Finland on September 1, 2025.

Alleged N110.4bn Fraud: EFCC Submits Fresh Bank Documents Against Yahaya Bello

The trial of former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, over alleged ₦110.4 billion fraud continued on Thursday with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) tendering additional bank records before the Federal Capital Territory High Court sitting in Maitama, Abuja.

Bello is facing trial alongside Umar Oricha and Abdulsalami Hudu on a 16-count charge bordering on criminal breach of trust and money laundering.

The case is being presided over by Justice MaryAnne Anenih.

At the resumed hearing, the prosecution team, led by Kemi Pinheiro (SAN), continued its case with the cross-examination of the sixth prosecution witness, Mashelia Bata, a compliance officer with Zenith Bank.

Defence counsel to the first and second defendants, Joseph Daudu (SAN), questioned the witness on several transactions contained in Exhibit S1, a statement of account earlier admitted in evidence.

Bata explained that the “description” column of the statement reflected transaction details, citing entries such as a ₦10 million cheque issued to Abdulsalami Hudu on January 20, 2016, and another cheque payment of ₦2,454,400 to Halims Hotels and Tours in Lokoja.

He, however, told the court that he could not determine the purposes for which the funds were utilised.

The witness was also questioned on Exhibit X1, identified as account opening documents of a company account domiciled at Zenith Bank’s Lokoja branch.

He testified on several inflows and outflows recorded in December 2016, including a ₦74.37 million credit from the Kogi State Internal Revenue Service and a ₦10 million cheque issued to Mohammed Jami’u Sallau.

The EFCC further called Gabriel Ocha, a compliance officer with First City Monument Bank, as the eighth prosecution witness. Ocha tendered documents relating to Kunfayakun Global Limited covering transactions between 2018 and 2024.

He testified on transactions including a ₦30 million debit to the American International School, as well as multiple ₦10 million web transfers and NIBSS inflows recorded on November 1, 2021.

Another witness, A.D. Ojoma, a compliance officer with Sterling Bank, also testified for the prosecution.

He tendered the statement of account of Bespoke Business Solutions Limited and highlighted several large credit entries, including payments from the Kogi State Internal Revenue Service running into hundreds of millions of naira in 2019.

Justice Anenih adjourned the matter until Friday, January 16, 2026, for the continuation of trial.

Meanwhile, the Serving Overseer of Citadel Global Community Church, Pastor Tunde Bakare, has called for urgent judicial and institutional reforms, warning that corruption within Nigeria’s justice system continues to undermine national development.

Bakare made the call while delivering the keynote address at the 22nd Chief Gani Fawehinmi Annual Lecture organised by the Nigerian Bar Association, Ikeja Branch.

He lamented what he described as an integrity deficit among judges and lawyers, citing political interference in judicial appointments and conflicting court judgments as major challenges confronting the sector.

Also speaking at a separate event, the Rector of Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, Prof. Salisu Usman, advocated stricter penalties for corruption, including capital punishment for convicted offenders.

Usman made the call during the 37th Inaugural Lecture of the Federal University, Lokoja, where he described corruption as a major setback to Nigeria’s socio-economic growth and global image.

Atiku’s Son Joins APC, Pledges Support For Tinubu’s Re-election

Abba Abubakar, son of former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, has defected from the PDP to the ruling All Progressives Congress, declaring his support for President Bola Tinubu’s second-term bid in 2027.

The defection was announced on Thursday at the National Assembly complex in Abuja, where Abba was formally received by the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, alongside top APC leaders from the North-East zone.

Popularly known as Abba, the younger Abubakar described his decision to join the APC as historic and personal, noting that it followed careful reflection on the leadership direction of the country and the performance of the Tinubu administration.

Addressing party leaders and supporters, he announced his resignation from the PDP and directed members of his political structure, the Haske Atiku Organisation, founded in 2022, to immediately align with the APC and work for the success of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“My name is Abubakar Atiku Abubakar, but everyone calls me Abba. I am here today to formally announce my exit from my former party and my decision to join the APC,” he said.

“With this development, I will work closely with Senator Barau to actualise the second-term ambition of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027. I have directed all coordinators and members of my organisation to join the APC and mobilise support for the President.”

Welcoming him into the party, the APC National Vice Chairman (North-East), Mustapha Salihu, described the defection as symbolic and far-reaching, saying it marked a shift towards what he called politics beyond old divides.

“This decision reflects a new phase of politics without borders. Abba has seen the policies and programmes of the Tinubu administration and has chosen to align with them,” Salihu said, assuring him of equal opportunities and full rights within the party.

Senator Barau, in his remarks, congratulated Abba for what he described as a bold and principled move, stressing that the decision was driven by ideology rather than family influence.

“You did not come here because of who your father is. You came because you believe in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, his leadership style and the Renewed Hope Agenda,” Barau said.

The Deputy President of the Senate disclosed that Abba, who had been following political developments from the United States, was impressed by ongoing reforms and engagement by the Tinubu administration, which informed his return to Nigeria and eventual defection.

Also speaking, a presidential aide, Alhaji Mahmoud Abdullahi, assured Abba of President Tinubu’s acceptance and support within the APC, describing his move as a return home.

On behalf of the defecting group, Kano State coordinator of the organisation, Hon. Mubarak Musa, said all political activities of the group would now be coordinated through Senator Barau, pledging to intensify mobilisation for the APC ahead of 2027.

The event culminated in the formal renaming of the Haske Atiku Organisation to the Haske Bola Tinubu Organisation, symbolising a complete political realignment and an open endorsement of President Tinubu’s re-election bid.
