Namibia’s Founding Father, Sam Nujoma Dies At 95

Namibia’s founding father, Sam Nujoma, who led the country’s struggle for independence from South Africa, has died at the age of 95, the presidency announced on Saturday.

President Nangolo Mbumba, in a statement released on Sunday, said Nujoma had been hospitalized for the past three weeks due to an illness “from which he could not recover.”

“With the utmost sorrow and sadness,” Mbumba stated, “the passing of our revered freedom fighter and revolutionary leader” has occurred.

“Our Founding Father lived a long and consequential life during which he exceptionally served the people of his beloved country,” he added.

Born into a farming family of the Ovambo ethnic group, Nujoma was the eldest of ten children.

In 1949, he worked as a railway sweeper near Windhoek while attending night classes.

During this time, he became acquainted with Herero chief Hosea Kutako, who was actively campaigning against apartheid rule in Namibia, then known as South West Africa.

Kutako played a crucial role in mentoring Nujoma, who soon became politically active, particularly in efforts to resist a government order to relocate black workers to a new township in the late 1950s.

At Kutako’s urging, Nujoma went into exile in 1960, leaving behind his wife and four children. That same year, he was elected president of the South West People’s Organisation (SWAPO).

From abroad, he sought international backing for Namibia’s independence movement.

In 1966, SWAPO launched an armed struggle against South Africa after the apartheid government refused to comply with a United Nations directive to relinquish control over the territory.

South Africa justified its continued rule, claiming Namibia served as a strategic buffer against the spread of communism in Africa.

Namibia, a country rich in natural resources, finally achieved independence in 1990, making it one of the last African nations to do so.

Following independence, Nujoma won the country’s first democratic election and served three terms as president, overseeing a period of relative economic growth and political stability.

His policies on HIV/AIDS earned him international recognition, but he was criticized for refusing to reintegrate several hundred former SWAPO fighters accused of being spies for apartheid South Africa.

These individuals had been imprisoned in Angola during the liberation struggle.

Nujoma was also outspoken against homosexuality, describing it as a “madness” and declaring in 2001 that gays and lesbians would face arrest or deportation.

He stepped down as president in 2005, handing over power to his chosen successor, Hifikepunye Pohamba, who won the election with ease.

However, Nujoma remained an influential figure in the country’s political landscape and did not officially retire from politics until 2007.

President Mbumba praised him, stating, “He inspired us to rise to our feet and to become masters of this vast land of our ancestors.”

Namibia’s president-elect, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, also paid tribute to Nujoma, acknowledging his “visionary leadership and dedication to liberation and nation-building,” which she said “laid the foundation for our free, united nation.”

“Let us honor his legacy by upholding resilience, solidarity, and selfless service,” she added. Nandi-Ndaitwah, who won the presidential election last November, will be sworn into office next month.

Trump Stops US Aid To South Africa

Former US President Donald Trump has announced a freeze on American aid to South Africa, citing concerns over a land reform policy that he claims allows the government to seize farmland from white Afrikaner farmers without compensation.

In an executive order issued on Friday, Trump stated that the policy “enables the government of South Africa to seize ethnic minority Afrikaners’ agricultural property without compensation.”

He also highlighted ongoing diplomatic tensions between Washington and Pretoria, particularly regarding Middle East policy.

Land ownership remains a divisive issue in South Africa, where the majority of farmland is still in white ownership nearly 30 years after the end of apartheid.

The government has faced increasing pressure to accelerate land redistribution.

Trump further declared that the US would support the resettlement of Afrikaners facing “government-sponsored race-based discrimination.”

His statement comes amid a wider controversy over South Africa’s expropriation act, signed into law last month, a move that the South African government has dismissed as being misrepresented by foreign critics.

Tech billionaire Elon Musk, a South African-born US citizen and Trump ally, has also criticized President Cyril Ramaphosa’s government, accusing it of promoting “openly racist ownership laws.”

Reports suggest that licensing for Musk’s Starlink satellite internet service in South Africa has been delayed due to a requirement for major companies to allocate 30 percent equity to historically disadvantaged groups.

Adding to the diplomatic strain, US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio has announced he will skip an upcoming G20 summit in South Africa, accusing Pretoria of adopting an “anti-American” stance in international affairs.

Kidnappers of Former NYSC DG Demand N250 Million Ransom

The abductors of retired General Maharazu Tsiga, a former Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), have demanded a ransom of N250 million for his release.

A source close to the family, speaking anonymously, confirmed that the kidnappers made contact and stated their demand.

Tsiga was kidnapped alongside nine other individuals during an attack that took place around midnight on Wednesday.

According to reports, over 100 armed men stormed his residence, overpowering security and taking him away.

Abdullahi Balarabe Dabai, the lawmaker representing Bakori/Danja Federal Constituency in Katsina State, described the attack, saying the gunmen surrounded the house and started breaking doors.

In response, General Tsiga reportedly came out to confront them and asked what they wanted before being taken away.

As of the time of this report, neither the army’s 17 Brigade in Katsina nor the state police command had issued an official statement on the incident.

Govt Probe Against My Father Should Be Fair, Objective – El-Rufai’s Son

Bello El-Rufai, the House of Representatives member representing Kaduna North Federal Constituency, has stated that investigating the past administration of his father, former Governor Nasir El-Rufai, is not a problem as long as it is done with genuine intentions.

Speaking in an interview with BBC Hausa’s Mahangar Zamani, Bello addressed the ongoing political tension between his father and Governor Uba Sani, expressing disappointment over the rift but maintaining that he is not in a position to mediate.

“It is unsettling. I wouldn’t even want to see my enemies fighting, let alone people I care about,” he said.

He acknowledged that conflicts happen in life, comparing them to broken friendships or failed marriages but emphasized the need to preserve relationships.

The fallout between El-Rufai and his successor, Sani, has drawn public interest, but Bello dismissed the issue as exaggerated.

“People are treating it like a Bollywood drama. Some even call me to extract information,” he remarked.

On the probe initiated by Governor Sani’s administration, Bello insisted that accountability is important but should not be driven by personal grudges.

“Investigations are fine, but they should not be about humiliating someone or settling scores. If done with ulterior motives, Allah will judge,” he warned.

When asked if he would intervene to reconcile both men, he responded, “It’s not my responsibility. My focus is on delivering on my mandate to the people of Kaduna North.” He also praised his father’s leadership, stating, “Politically speaking, Mallam Nasir has no equal. He is focused on his work, and he is my father.”

Bello noted that he has no personal issues with Governor Uba Sani, despite speculation about his stance.

Kidnapped Edo Traditional Ruler Rescued Days After Abduction

The Edo State Police Command has announced the rescue of His Royal Highness, Friday Ehizojie, the Onogie of Udo-Eguare in Igueben Local Government Area, days after he was kidnapped.

The monarch was abducted on February 3 while traveling on a commercial motorcycle through a forested area between Ubiaja and Udo community.

The assailants shot and killed the motorcycle rider before seizing the traditional ruler.

Confirming the rescue, the command’s spokesperson, CSP Moses Yamu, credited the success to sustained search and rescue operations carried out by the police in collaboration with vigilante groups.

“The command is pleased to inform the public that the intensive efforts to secure the release of the Onogie of Udo-Eguare have yielded positive results,” Yamu said.

He noted that Commissioner of Police, Betty Otimenyin, had assured the public of the monarch’s safe return, a promise that has now been fulfilled.

The rescue operation, he added, was made possible through the logistical support provided by Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo.

He also commended local vigilantes, hunters, and other community members who contributed to the effort.

The police reaffirmed their commitment to tackling crime and ensuring the safety of residents across the state.

2027: Kwankwaso, Aregbesola Hold Talks In Lagos

Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso met with ex-Minister of Interior Rauf Aregbesola at his Lagos residence on Saturday to discuss national issues and the state of Nigeria’s democracy.

Kwankwaso, who shared details of the meeting via his social media handle, emphasized the importance of the discussions.

“This evening, I had the pleasure of visiting the former Governor of Osun State and former Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, at his residence in Lagos.

The meeting afforded us the opportunity to engage in discussions on national politics, governance, and the future of Nigeria’s democratic landscape,” he wrote on X.

The meeting comes at a time when opposition figures are being urged to form a united front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of future elections.

Aregbesola, once a close ally of President Bola Tinubu, distanced himself from the president following a political rift over the second-term ambition of former Osun State Governor Gboyega Oyetola.

After Aregbesola’s tenure as governor, Oyetola succeeded him and later served as Minister under ex-President Muhammadu Buhari.

Kwankwaso, a two-time Kano governor and former minister, contested the 2023 presidential election under the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).

Why Some PDP Leaders Want Me Out At All Cost – Samuel Anyanwu

The National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Samuel Anyanwu, has alleged that certain party leaders are determined to remove him due to his stance on due process, rule of law, and his close ties with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Chief Nyesom Wike.

Speaking to newsmen, Ayanwu claimed that some politicians from the South East view him as an obstacle to their ambitions, particularly in their bid to control the party structure.

“I was duly elected as National Secretary at our national convention, and the party’s constitution clearly outlines how a National Working Committee member can be replaced if necessary,” he said.

Anyanwu explained that he temporarily stepped aside to contest the Imo governorship election, allowing the Deputy National Secretary to act in his place.

However, he accused some individuals of forging party documents to insert a clause that falsely required him to resign. He stated that the police are currently investigating the matter.

He also defended his longstanding relationship with Wike, noting that they both served as local government chairmen and have remained allies within the PDP.

Anyanwu accused some PDP governors, in collaboration with a section of the Board of Trustees (BoT), of trying to weaken the party for their personal interests.

He described the push for Sunday Udeh-Okoye’s immediate swearing-in as National Secretary—following a Court of Appeal ruling—as a “proxy war.”

The PDP has been divided between supporters of Wike and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, with tensions escalating since Atiku’s victory in the 2023 presidential primary.

The conflict deepened following a rift between Wike and Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Anyanwu and the PDP’s acting national chairman, Umar Damagum, are seen as Wike allies and have faced increasing opposition from rival factions.

He urged those seeking his removal to wait until the expiration of his tenure in December 2025, when the position will be open for contest at the party’s national convention.

The PDP Governors’ Forum had previously endorsed Udeh-Okoye as National Secretary, citing an Enugu Court of Appeal judgment.

The BoT later backed this decision after reviewing a report by a committee chaired by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), which recommended Udeh-Okoye’s immediate swearing-in based on the court ruling.

APC Will Link Anambra To The Centre By November – Ganduje Assures

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje, has assured that the party will integrate Anambra State into the national political framework by November.

Speaking in Awka on Saturday during the commissioning of the party’s state secretariat, Ganduje emphasized the importance of the Southeast region aligning with the federal government to fully benefit from national governance.

He stated that the easiest way for the region to achieve this was by embracing the APC. The newly inaugurated party secretariat was procured, equipped, and furnished by two governorship aspirants, including Prof. Obiora Okonkwo.

Prof. Okonkwo, a leading aspirant, pledged to secure victory for the party in the November 8 governorship election if given the ticket.

Addressing party members, Ganduje described the Igbo as Nigeria’s most nationalistic people and urged them to connect politically with the centre by voting for the APC.

“You must strive to be part of the national grid. Politically, you are currently under rural electrification, relying on generators. This is unacceptable. You need to be fully connected,” he said.

He recalled historical figures like Nnamdi Azikiwe and the late Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, emphasizing the need for the region to return to the days of national integration.

Ganduje also reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to national unity and reforms, noting that progress was already evident in areas such as oil production, security, refinery operations, and currency stability.

Meanwhile, APC governorship aspirants showcased their support base at the event. Prof. Okonkwo, who emerged as the most popular among party members, vowed to run a strong campaign that would deliver an APC victory.

“If you give me the ticket, I will give you the Certificate of Occupancy for the Anambra Government House,” he declared.
