President Tinubu Committed To Ending Hunger In Nigeria – FG

The Federal Government has reiterated that President Bola Tinubu’s administration prioritizes food security as a key aspect of its governance.

Aliyu Abdullahi, the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, stated that since Tinubu’s inauguration in May 2023, the government has launched several initiatives aimed at ensuring food security across the country.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Monday, Abdullahi emphasized that food security is a central focus of the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

He explained that food security is not only vital for the agriculture sector but also plays a critical role in poverty reduction and fostering gender inclusivity in Nigeria’s economy.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is deeply concerned about Nigeria’s food security situation. He often shares his vision of a Nigeria where no one has to go to bed hungry. We are committed to realizing that vision and working diligently to achieve it,” Abdullahi said.

In recent years, food prices in Nigeria have surged dramatically, making basic food items unaffordable for many.

In response, both the Federal Government and state governments have introduced various measures, including palliative programs aimed at easing the burden on Nigerians.

Shortly after taking office, President Tinubu declared a food security emergency, acknowledging the urgent need to address the issue.

“We will work with our security agencies to safeguard farmlands and protect farmers, ensuring they can work without fear of attacks,” he said.

The president also highlighted the Central Bank of Nigeria’s ongoing support for the agricultural sector, particularly in financing the agricultural value chain.

Additionally, the government has mapped out 500,000 hectares of land to increase the availability of arable land for farming, a move aimed at boosting agricultural production in the country.

UK Tribunal Orders Deportation Of Nigerian, Rejects Couple’s Plea For Mercy

A UK tribunal has ruled against a Nigerian man, Olutobi Ogunbawo, ordering his deportation after he and his British wife, Maria Adesanya, appealed to the court to prevent his removal.

Ogunbawo, 43, has been on trial in the UK since 2019 for immigration-related offenses, during which he served three years in prison.

The couple had pleaded with the court for mercy, arguing that Ogunbawo’s deportation would significantly impact their plans to start a family.

They highlighted the unavailability of in vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment in Nigeria as a key reason for their request, asserting that his removal would hinder their chances of having a child through IVF.

Initially, a first-tier tribunal judge sided with the couple, but the UK Home Secretary contested the decision.

The Home Secretary argued that the judge had relied too heavily on the couple’s testimony without sufficient evidence to back their claims.

Following a review of the case, the upper tribunal ruled on November 4, 2024, that the original decision was flawed.

The tribunal pointed out that a simple online search would have confirmed the availability of IVF in Nigeria, directly contradicting the couple’s argument.

In its final ruling, the upper tribunal stated, “The judge erred in relying exclusively on Ms. A’s personal testimony regarding the unavailability of IVF in Nigeria,” adding that a basic search confirmed the existence of IVF services in the country.

As a result, the tribunal upheld the decision to deport Ogunbawo.

Just In: South Korean President Banned From Leaving The Country

South Korean President, Yoon Suk Yeol has been banned from leaving the country, the Justice Ministry confirmed on Monday, marking a significant development in the ongoing political turmoil following his controversial imposition of martial law.

Yoon is now the first sitting president in South Korea to face such a restriction.

This comes after a chaotic series of events that unfolded last week.

On December 3, Yoon ordered special forces and helicopters to parliament in a dramatic move to enforce martial law, which was eventually rescinded after lawmakers rejected his decree.

The decision plunged the nation into chaos, with protests and political fallout intensifying.

Yoon narrowly survived an impeachment attempt on Saturday, which failed when members of his own People Power Party (PPP) walked out, leaving the opposition short of the necessary two-thirds majority to proceed.

Despite remaining in office, Yoon faces multiple investigations, including one for alleged insurrection.

In addition to Yoon, several key figures involved in the martial law episode have also been placed under travel bans.

These include former defense minister Kim Yong-hyun, who is in detention, and ex-interior minister Lee Sang-min.

General Park An-su, who oversaw the martial law operation, and defense counterintelligence commander Yeo In-hyung are also prohibited from leaving the country.

Yoon’s situation has sparked fierce political debate. Opposition leaders have denounced his actions as unconstitutional, particularly his decision to delegate power to the prime minister and PPP leader, claiming that it amounts to an unlawful “second insurrection.”

Under South Korea’s constitution, the president remains the head of government unless incapacitated or removed from office. The opposition argues that delegating power to an unelected official is a violation of the country’s constitutional framework.

Despite the political crisis, Yoon has remained firm in his position.

He has apologized for the disruption caused by his martial law declaration but has not resigned. Instead, he stated that he would leave the decision about his future to his party, while accepting responsibility for the incident.

Legal experts have criticized the ruling party’s claim that Yoon can stay in office while transferring authority to non-elected officials. Constitutional law professor Kim Hae-won called it an unconstitutional “soft coup,” emphasizing that South Korea’s constitution outlines specific processes for dealing with presidential issues, such as impeachment.

With Yoon’s approval rating plunging to a historic low of 11%, opposition leaders have vowed to pursue another impeachment motion, with another vote expected on Saturday.

The political unrest continues to escalate, with large protests expected to take place outside the National Assembly building in the coming days.

4-Year-Old Stolen Child From Rivers School Found In Abuja

A 4-year-old girl, Hope Evans, who was kidnapped from a primary school in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has been safely recovered by police operatives in Abuja.

The child was reported missing on October 31, 2024, by her mother, Ms. Lydia Jonah Gabriel.

According to the FCT Police Command spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, the abduction occurred when a woman, identified as Blessing Okoi, lured the child away from the school premises at around 1:28 pm by offering her biscuits and eggs.

The woman, who was not known to the school staff, left with Hope unnoticed, and the child’s family was unable to locate her later that evening.

Upon realizing that Hope was missing, Ms. Lydia Jonah and other family members visited the school for more information and discovered that the woman was known locally as “Destiny’s mum.”

However, when they visited the woman’s residence, they found that she had vacated the property abruptly the same night.

The family reported the incident to the Trans Amadi police station, and the case was later transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.

The police suspected that the abductor had fled to Abuja, and the victim’s aunt subsequently reported the case to the FCT police command.

Following a thorough investigation, the police tracked the suspect, Blessing Okoi, to Maraba, a suburb of Abuja, where she was arrested on November 29.

Hope Evans was rescued that evening. During questioning, Okoi initially claimed to be the child’s mother, but her statements did not match the information provided by the real mother.

The FCT police then contacted Ms. Lydia Jonah, who traveled to Abuja and was reunited with her daughter on November 6.

The suspect, Blessing Okoi, remains in police custody and is undergoing further interrogation.

Labour Party Takes Defected Rep Members To Court

The leadership of the Labour Party (LP) has announced that it has begun the legal process to reclaim the seats of four lawmakers who recently defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The opposition party argued that the lawmakers should not be allowed to retain their seats after switching allegiance to the APC.

LP’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, made this known in an exclusive interview with DAILY GAZETTE.

He expressed the party’s strong disapproval of the defections, describing them as “unfortunate, irrational, and against the principles of democracy.”

The four lawmakers who defected from LP to APC are Tochukwu Okere (Imo), Donatus Mathew (Kaduna), Bassey Akiba (Cross River), Iyawe Esosa (Edo), and Daulyop Fom (Plateau). Their defection letters were read on the floor of the House of Representatives by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas on Thursday.

Ifoh clarified that under Section 68(g) of the 1999 Constitution, a lawmaker who defects from the party that sponsored them should vacate their seat.

He added that while the Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, has the authority to declare their seats vacant, the party doubted that this would happen due to the Speaker’s apparent support for the defectors.

As a result, the LP plans to take legal action to have the defected lawmakers’ seats officially declared vacant.

Ifoh also stated that the party would be compiling a “Hall of Shame” register, which would publicly name the defected lawmakers and other political figures deemed to have betrayed the party’s mandate.

The register, which is set to be published on Monday, is intended to highlight the LP’s disapproval of the defections and to warn against similar actions in the future.

“We will publish the register on Monday to show that it is wrong to carry a party’s mandate to another party without following the constitutional process,” Ifoh explained.

The party’s legal team has already begun the process of filing a case in court to resolve the issue.

Edo Governorship Tribunal Begins Hearing Of Seven Separate Petitions Today

The All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are gearing up for a legal showdown as the Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal begins hearings today, Monday, over petitions challenging the outcome of the September 21, 2024, election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared Senator Monday Okpebholo of the APC as the winner of the election, with Dr. Asue Ighodalo of the PDP finishing as the first runner-up.

However, Ighodalo and the PDP rejected the results, alleging electoral malpractice and manipulation, leading them to file a petition at the tribunal.

Ahead of the tribunal’s pre-hearing, the PDP Caretaker Chairman, Tony Aziegbemi, called for a fair and thorough examination of the evidence.

He stated, “We expect the judiciary to look at the case impartially and make a decision based on the overwhelming evidence we have, which shows the election was stolen.”

Aziegbemi expressed confidence that the tribunal would deliver justice, adding that the PDP’s legal team would present strong evidence to support their claims.

Meanwhile, the APC Publicity Secretary, Peter Uwadiae-Igbinigie, expressed confidence in his party’s legal team, saying they were fully prepared to defend the election result.

“We are ready to meet them in court and expose any actions by the PDP that could be prejudicial to the case,” he stated.

He also reiterated that the APC believed the tribunal members had proven integrity and would uphold the law impartially.

Uwadiae-Igbinigie added, “We have responded to the petition, and the people of Edo will soon see that the PDP’s influence in the state has waned, while the APC government is committed to improving the lives of Edo citizens.”

INEC had declared Okpebholo the winner with 291,667 votes, defeating Ighodalo, who garnered 247,274 votes, and Labour Party candidate Olumide Akpata, who received 22,763 votes.

In addition to the PDP, six other political parties, including the Accord Party, Social Democratic Party, and Allied Peoples Movement, have also approached the tribunal to contest the election results.

The tribunal, headed by Justice Wilfred Kpochi, will hear seven separate petitions, with the PDP seeking to have Ighodalo declared the rightful winner.
