Public Outcry Against Tax Reform Bills Misplaced – Senator Victor Umeh

Senator Victor Umeh (LP – Anambra Central) has defended the controversial tax reform bills currently before the National Assembly, stating that the public outcry against them is misplaced.

Umeh emphasized that there is nothing to fear about the bills, which were transmitted to the legislature by President Bola Tinubu in October to strengthen Nigeria’s fiscal framework and support the government’s development agenda.

Speaking to reporters in Abuja on Monday, Umeh acknowledged the widespread backlash but argued that the government needs to engage more effectively with the public to explain the content and purpose of the bills.

He noted that Nigerians’ lack of confidence in the government has led to resistance to tax reforms, with many citizens reluctant to pay taxes due to concerns about misuse of public funds.

Umeh, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Diaspora Matters, stated that while no one enjoys paying taxes, a well-functioning system that ensures accountability and delivers tangible benefits would inspire public trust.

He emphasized that taxes should be collected with the consent of the people, not through force, and that a successful tax system depends on citizens’ belief that their contributions will lead to improved infrastructure and services.

The senator also addressed misconceptions circulating on social media, specifically the belief that the new tax reforms would unfairly benefit Lagos and Ogun states due to their status as corporate hubs.

He assured that such claims were unfounded and could be clarified by a careful review of the bills.

Umeh acknowledged the importance of public participation in the legislative process, stressing that the bills would undergo public hearings where citizens’ opinions would be considered.

He reiterated that the government’s task is to effectively communicate the objectives of the reforms to ensure broad support before they are passed into law.

FCT Doctors Threaten “Deadliest Shutdown” Over Unpaid Salaries, Give Wike 14-Day Ultimatum

The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) in the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has issued a stern warning to FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, threatening a “deadliest shutdown” of hospitals within 14 days if their demands are not met.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Monday, Dr. George Ebong, President of ARD-FCTA, acknowledged the minister’s efforts in infrastructural development but expressed deep concern over the worsening conditions of healthcare workers in the FCT.

He emphasized that doctors are facing severe economic hardship, which he said could lead to their extinction if not addressed.

“While we appreciate the minister’s strides in infrastructure, doctors are being neglected,” said Ebong.

“As he addresses infrastructural projects, we remain the forgotten human project. We believe the minister is capable of tackling this issue.”

Ebong outlined the doctors’ primary demands, including the immediate clearance of six months’ salary arrears owed to members employed in 2023.

He warned that failure to resolve these issues could lead to a collapse of the nation’s health sector.

“This injustice is unprecedented in the FCT. If it continues, it will have dire consequences for the country’s healthcare system,” he added, urging Wike to take swift action to prevent further loss of life.

The doctors initially gave a 21-day ultimatum during their Annual General Meeting, which now leaves only 14 days for resolution.

“We do not want to cause the deadliest shutdown, but if no action is taken, we will be left with no choice,” Ebong concluded, stressing that the nation’s health is at risk and immediate intervention is needed.

Man Beheads Friend After Misappropriating N30m

The Delta State Police Command has arrested one Mr Efe Onoetiyi for killing his best friend, Paulinus Okon, after collecting over N50 million from the deceased.

The Commissioner of Police Delta State Command, CP Abaniwonda Olufemi, disclosed this on Monday while parading the man, alongside four other killers.

He said, “I welcome you to this briefing which is particularly painful. It involves the murder of one Paulinus Okon by his bosom friend, one Efe Onoetiyi. Paulinus was reported missing on September 8, 2024, by his brother after he went out with his friend Efe Onoitiyi, 30. The suspect, Efe Onoitiyi, who initially denied knowing what happened to Paulinus came to Paulinus’s house to ask his family about him.

“He was confronted that the deceased went out with him on that same date which he denied that the deceased did not go out with him. On a later date, Efe came back and demanded N500,000 from the deceased’s brother that he would use the money to pay a herbalist who could tell them Paulinus’s whereabouts.

Efe again came and informed the family that Paulinus was kidnapped and he collected a ransom of about N20,715,000 from the deceased brother claiming that he was in touch with the kidnappers.”

“When it became obvious that Efe had something to hide, he was arrested and the case was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, State Headquarters Asaba.

On November 28 2024, I directed the DPO Ekpan to take over the case and ensure that a discrete investigation was carried out to fish out those responsible, as the main suspect, Efe, was not yielding.

“The DPO Ekpan carried out an intelligence-led investigation that indicted one Okeimute Gaga 48, Okeimute gaga upon his arrest opened up and confessed that he could no longer hide what happened.

Okeimute Gaga narrated how Efe brought Paulinus to the Orere River in Otokutu and requested that they kill him.

The suspect further stated that on September 8, 2024, Efe and Sunday Ikpeba, and a 30- old herbalist Lawrence Joseph tied Paulinus Okon to a stake at night close to Orere River and beheaded him alive.

“His body was thrown into the River while the herbalist took the head of Paulinus and buried him at his shrine in Otokutu. The DPO, Ekpan Police station, led police operatives to the shrine in Otokutu where the skull of Paulinus was exhumed and recovered.”

Olufemi stated that during interrogation, Efe confessed that he killed Paulinus because he did not know how to tell him he had diverted his money meant to buy the house.

He added, “Efe stated that he saw a building for sale at N30 million, which he advertised to the deceased and the deceased paid N30 million in three instalments, but instead of buying the house, he diverted the money for his personal use, bought two lands and was building a duplex for himself.

“He further stated that he did not know how to explain to the deceased that he had used his money hence he decided that killing Mr Paulinus would save him the trouble. Efe and the three other suspects are in custody.”

The CP, however, urged members of the public to be vigilant especially this season about the friends they keep, lamenting that parents are no longer taking the upbringing of their children, especially boy children seriously.

In an interview with the suspects, they all confessed to the crime, saying that the head was sacrificed to the gods of the community.

South Sudan Faces Crisis As Refugee Influx, Cholera Outbreak Overwhelm Health System

South Sudan is grappling with a severe humanitarian crisis, as an unprecedented influx of refugees from war-torn Sudan combines with a rapidly escalating cholera outbreak, according to Doctors Without Borders (MSF).

The medical charity reported that up to 5,000 people are crossing into South Sudan daily, with some estimates from the United Nations even higher, suggesting 7,000 to 10,000 refugees are arriving each day.

The conflict in Sudan, which erupted in April 2023 between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, has displaced millions and left tens of thousands dead, creating one of the worst humanitarian emergencies in the world.

In Renk, a town near the border with Sudan, MSF is working alongside the International Committee of the Red Cross to provide medical care at a transit center housing around 17,000 people.

Emanuele Montobbio, an MSF emergency coordinator in Renk, described the situation as “completely overwhelming,” noting that even as facilities are expanding, over 100 wounded patients, many with serious injuries, are still waiting for surgery.

Alhida Hammed, a refugee from Sudan’s Blue Nile state, described the horrors he experienced before fleeing to Renk.

“The houses were blazing, and everyone was running in different directions,” he said, adding that he now lives under a tree, unable to return to his homeland due to the trauma.

The refugee crisis has compounded the challenges South Sudan already faces, including its own battles with internal conflict, poverty, and natural disasters.

The country’s medical infrastructure is already stretched thin, and the cholera epidemic is spreading rapidly.

MSF reported 92 deaths in Unity State alone, with more than 1,210 cases treated in Bentiu city in just four weeks.

In overcrowded camps near the capital, Juba, MSF treated around 1,700 suspected cholera cases, with 25 deaths recorded.

Mamman Mustapha, MSF’s head of mission in South Sudan, pointed to systemic neglect as the root cause of the crisis, noting poor sanitation, uncollected waste, and raw sewage in the camps, which have contaminated drinking water and left inhabitants vulnerable to disease.

“Without immediate intervention, we expect cholera cases to skyrocket in the coming days and weeks,” Mustapha warned, calling for urgent action to address both the refugee crisis and the cholera outbreak.

Speed Darlington Granted Bail After Nearly A Month In Custody

Speed Darlington, the controversial Nigerian rapper, has been granted bail after spending almost a month in police custody.

This was confirmed by his lawyer, Stanley Alieke, who shared the news on Instagram on Monday.

Alieke wrote, “Akpi has been granted bail by the court,” though he did not provide further details.

The rapper, whose real name is Darlington Achakpo, was arrested on November 27 while performing at a show in Owerri, Imo State.

His arrest was linked to an alleged altercation with Afrofusion star, Damini Ogulu, better known as Burna Boy.

According to Darlington’s other lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, the arrest stemmed from taunts made by the rapper toward Burna Boy, particularly over the artist’s association with embattled U.S. rapper Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs, who is facing serious charges related to sexual exploitation and human trafficking.

Darlington had publicly vowed to continue calling out Burna Boy over the matter, which led to his initial arrest.

Adeyanju had earlier stated that Darlington would be either arraigned within 48 hours or released on bail.

He later confirmed that the application for Speed Darlington’s bail had been granted, noting, “Issues around injustice may take time but justice will always prevail.”

The rapper’s release brings an end to his month-long detention, allowing him to resume his activities after the legal battle surrounding his arrest.

IG Never Ordered Attacks On Policemen During Stop-and-Search Operations – FPRO

The Nigeria Police Force has rejected as false a viral claim suggesting that the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, instructed citizens to physically assault police officers or throw stones at them during stop-and-search operations, particularly when asked to search phones.

In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police described the claim as baseless and part of a deliberate misinformation campaign.

The statement further clarified that the IGP has never issued such a directive and has instead emphasized the importance of reporting police misconduct through proper channels.

“The Nigeria Police Force wishes to address a viral fake news story that has emerged, claiming that Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM., has instructed citizens to physically assault and throw stones at police officers who request to search their phones. This claim is entirely false and has no basis in reality,” the statement read.

It also stressed that the IGP has advocated for accountability in law enforcement and encouraged citizens to report any police misconduct through official channels.

The statement provided various helplines and contact methods for the public to lodge complaints, including phone numbers (+2347056792065, +2349133333785, +2349133333786), as well as social media handles on X, Facebook, and Instagram (#PoliceNG, #ngpolice, #nigeriapoliceforce).

Additionally, the police urged the public to be cautious of misinformation and to verify news through reliable sources.

“Members of the public are advised to remain vigilant against misinformation and verify information through credible sources. The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to fostering a cooperative and trustful relationship between the police and the communities they serve,” the statement concluded.

Mozambique Braces For Unrest As Judges Prepare To Rule On Contested Election Results

Mozambique is on high alert as judges prepare to deliver their ruling on the country’s disputed October 9 election.

Tensions are running high, with opposition leader Venancio Mondlane threatening “chaos” if the ruling party, Frelimo, is confirmed as the winner.

The standoff has already led to at least 130 deaths amid widespread unrest.

The Constitutional Council is expected to announce its decision at 3:00 pm (1300 GMT) on Monday, likely validating Frelimo’s victory and paving the way for Daniel Chapo to succeed President Filipe Nyusi, whose second term ends on January 15.

In Maputo, the capital, businesses were closed and the streets were eerily quiet despite it being the festive season.

Police barricaded main roads into the city center and restricted access to key government buildings, including the Constitutional Council’s office and the presidential palace.

Mondlane, who has been in self-imposed exile since the assassination of his lawyer on October 19, an attack he blames on security forces insists that the vote was rigged in favor of Frelimo.

He claims that a separate count shows he actually won, and he is determined to take office.

He warned that Mozambique would face “difficult days” ahead, emphasizing that the Constitutional Council’s decision could either lead to peace or trigger “chaos.”

The dispute has sparked violent protests, crippling major cities, disrupting industries, and even halting cross-border trade with South Africa.

The protests have intensified despite numerous casualties, with police accused of using live ammunition against demonstrators.

According to civil society group Plataforma Decide, at least 130 people have been killed in the unrest, a figure also referenced by Amnesty International.

The situation has prompted the US government to issue a travel warning for Mozambique ahead of the ruling.

Pope Francis called for dialogue and reconciliation on Sunday, urging that goodwill prevail over conflict.

President Nyusi, in his address to the nation on Friday, expressed hope that the final results would pave the way for constructive dialogue.

Preliminary results show Chapo ahead with 71 percent of the vote, while Mondlane, who claims he won 53 percent, finished in second with 20 percent.

However, Mondlane’s supporters argue that the election was deeply flawed and insist that the public demand a fair outcome.

Analysts predict that the ruling will significantly impact the nation’s future, with some warning that if the election result is upheld, violence could escalate further.

Political and security risk experts believe that the protests, which have already been some of the most dangerous in Mozambique’s history, could spiral into even greater unrest, marking a pivotal moment in the country’s political landscape.

Mondlane’s opposition to Frelimo has resonated with younger, disillusioned voters, mirroring similar anti-government movements seen in other Southern African nations.

Some observers have likened the unrest to the “Southern African Spring,” drawing parallels to the Arab Spring uprisings in the 2010s.

Presidency Accuses Peter Obi Of Politicizing Stampede Tragedies

The Nigerian presidency has condemned Peter Obi, former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, for politicizing recent stampedes that resulted in multiple fatalities, including the deaths of children, in Oyo, Anambra, and Abuja.

In a statement released on Monday, Sunday Dare, Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication to President Bola Tinubu, criticized Obi for his comments on the tragic incidents.

Dare accused Obi of exploiting the misfortune of others for political gain, stating, “When seeking someone who benefits from the misfortune of others or from confusion, look no further than Peter Obi.”

Obi had made remarks on the tragedies, which occurred in Ibadan, Oyo State, during a children’s fair, in Abuja at a rice distribution event, and in Okija, Anambra State, where stampedes occurred over palliative distributions.

Dare described Obi’s comments as lacking decency, pointing out that his attempts to score political points amid such a sensitive situation were irresponsible.

Dare further emphasized that, unlike Obi’s remarks, President Tinubu had shown true leadership by suspending all engagements, expressing his profound sadness over the loss of lives, and ordering an immediate investigation into the incidents.

According to Dare, this response reflected the responsibility expected of national leaders in the face of such tragedies.

In a series of tweets, Obi had lamented that these stampedes were symptomatic of broader systemic failures in Nigeria, highlighting the country’s resource wealth contrasted with the ongoing poverty and hunger that were claimed to have led to the stampedes.

He expressed sorrow over the deaths, especially of children, while urging the government to address these persistent issues.

The tragic incidents in question have raised questions about the distribution of palliative aid and the broader economic challenges facing the country.

At least 40 children were reported dead in Ibadan, while 10 people lost their lives in Abuja, and 17 died in Anambra, all due to stampedes caused by overcrowding during distribution events.

The presidency reaffirmed the commitment of Tinubu’s administration to tackling Nigeria’s economic challenges, aiming to improve the standard of living for ordinary citizens.
