Sokoto Airstrike Tragedy Leaves 10 Civilians Dead

An airstrike in the Sokoto communities of Gidan Bisa and Runtuwa on Wednesday morning has led to the deaths of 10 civilians, sparking differing accounts between local officials and the military.

The attack, which occurred at around 6 a.m., involved bombs dropped by military jets reportedly targeting bandits in the Silame Local Government Area.

According to Hon. Abubakar Gitta Rana, Chairman of the Local Government, the airstrike also resulted in the death of livestock and was described as an “erroneous” assault on innocent civilians.

However, the Joint Task Force (JTF) North West, operating under the banner of Operation Fasan Yamma, defended the strike, asserting that it had targeted the Lakurawa terrorist group.

Lt. Col. Abdullahi Abubakar, a spokesman for the JTF, emphasized that the operation was legitimate and warned against misinformation being spread by terrorist groups and their supporters.

In the wake of the tragedy, Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu, alongside prominent figures such as Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko and Labour Minister Muhammadu Maigari Dingyadi, visited the affected communities to offer condolences to the families of the victims.

The governor participated in funeral prayers for the deceased and expressed sorrow over the incident, describing it as a “tragic mistake.”

“The jets were on a mission to target criminal elements but unfortunately bombed innocent civilians. This is a tragic incident, and we will ensure a thorough investigation to prevent such mistakes in the future,” Governor Aliyu stated.

To support the bereaved families, the state government announced a donation of ₦20 million and 100 bags of foodstuffs.

Additionally, they pledged to cover medical expenses for those injured in the airstrike.

UniAbuja Refutes Allegations Of Bias In VC Selection Process

The University of Abuja has dismissed claims of bias and irregularities in the ongoing selection process for the new Vice Chancellor.

The clarification comes after protests from senior professors on Tuesday, who criticized what they called a “flawed” process for appointing the new VC.

The university has faced tension following the departure of its former VC, Prof. Abdulrasheed Na’Allah, who stepped down on July 1.

Prior to his exit, Na’Allah initiated the process to select his successor. In the interim, Prof. Aisha Maikudi, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academics, was appointed as Acting Vice-Chancellor.

However, her appointment has sparked controversy, with some stakeholders questioning her qualifications, arguing she lacks the required years of experience as a professor for the role.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Habib Yakoob, the Acting Director of Information and University Relations, rejected the allegations, stating that Maikudi is fully qualified for the role and has proven her competence as Acting VC over the last six months.

The university emphasized that the selection process is being conducted in accordance with established regulations, ensuring transparency and fairness.

The statement read, “These reports, which claim that Professor Maikudi is being unfairly favored, as well as accusations of journalist harassment and protests by certain professors, are misleading and exaggerated. Her leadership during this period has received commendation from within and outside the university community.”

The university further emphasized that the selection process is being managed by the University Council, which is committed to conducting a merit-based and transparent procedure in line with the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act and other relevant statutes.

Addressing the protests, Yakoob stated that while a meeting had been planned to discuss the conduct of two Senate members who walked out of the Joint Council/Senate Selection Board meeting, it was postponed to seek alternative solutions.

Regarding claims of a Channels Television journalist being harassed, Yakoob clarified that the incident resulted from a misunderstanding regarding the journalist’s identity and presence on campus.

He explained that the journalist’s vehicle was temporarily immobilized to prevent unauthorized departure, but that no assault or detention took place.

The university reiterated its commitment to fostering positive relations with the media and ensuring the safety of all individuals on campus.

It urged stakeholders to allow the VC selection process to proceed without disruption, ensuring that the final decision serves the best interests of the institution.

South Korea’s Opposition Files Impeachment Motion Against Acting President, Han Duck-soo

South Korea’s opposition parties announced on Thursday that they have filed an impeachment motion against Acting President Han Duck-soo, amid growing tensions over the stalled process of appointing judges to the Constitutional Court.

The court is central to deciding whether to finalize the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol, who was suspended from office after declaring martial law on December 3.

Yoon’s suspension was confirmed by parliament on December 14, but the impeachment will not be official until the Constitutional Court rules.

However, the court is currently short of three judges, and while it can still function with its six members, a dissenting vote from any one of them would reinstate Yoon.

The opposition Democratic Party has accused Han of obstructing the process by refusing to approve three nominees for the court, leaving the country in a political deadlock.

Han, a career bureaucrat and member of the ruling People Power Party (PPP), has said he will approve the appointments only if both the ruling and opposition parties reach an agreement.

This position has led the opposition to argue that Han is not qualified to perform his duties as acting president.

“We have filed the impeachment motion and will bring it to the plenary session today,” said opposition MP Park Sung-joon. “We will put it to a vote tomorrow.”

The opposition claims that Han’s refusal to approve the judicial appointments and his rejection of two special probe bills intended to investigate Yoon’s martial law declaration and allegations involving his wife constitute a violation of his duty to uphold the constitution.

They accuse him of deliberately blocking investigations into the president and his wife, which they argue further undermines his ability to serve the public.

Han has defended his actions, stating that the appointments should only proceed if both the ruling and opposition parties can reach a consensus in the National Assembly, representing the people.

The 75-year-old acting president emphasized the importance of bipartisanship in such significant decisions.

If the opposition succeeds in passing the impeachment motion, it will mark the first time in South Korea’s democratic history that an acting president is impeached.

Should Han be removed, Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok is expected to step in as the new acting president.

The move comes amid a deepening political crisis, with President Yoon also facing criminal charges of insurrection related to his martial law declaration.

If convicted, Yoon could face severe penalties, including life imprisonment or even the death penalty.

Yoon has been summoned to appear for questioning by prosecutors on December 29, after previously refusing a summons on Christmas Day.

The political instability continues to roil South Korea’s vibrant political scene as the country grapples with ongoing disputes over governance.

I Have No Regrets About The Actions I Took While I Was Minister – Ohanenye

Former Minister of Women Affairs, Uju-Ken Ohanenye, stated on Wednesday that she has no regrets regarding the controversial actions she took during her time in office, emphasizing that she did her best to fulfill her duties.

Ohanenye, who served from August 2023 until her dismissal by President Bola Tinubu on October 23, shared her thoughts on her tenure during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

Throughout her time as minister, Ohanenye took several bold actions, including threatening legal action against the United Nations for allegedly mismanaging funds intended for Nigeria.

She also filed a lawsuit in May against Abdulmalik Sarkindaji, the Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, over his decision to marry off 100 orphans from his constituency.

Despite the controversies, Ohanenye defended her actions, saying that she gave her all in the role.

“I have a responsibility given to me to man that place and make sure things go right. I wouldn’t have tolerated anybody trying to rubbish deceit given to me,” she remarked.

“There must be an impact on people. I’m glad that I didn’t give such chance, and I have no regret in the way I did my job. That was the highest way I would have done that.”

She also discussed the October 15 donations, where many Nigerians contributed to support some of the country’s most vulnerable citizens.

Ohanenye reflected on her efforts to assist vulnerable groups, including the initiative for mobile courts to protect children working as street hawkers.

Noting that these initiatives were not included in her ministry’s budget, she mentioned her appeal for financial support from Nigerians.

“When I called on Nigerians, I was so surprised a lot of them gathered at the villa and donated money to this effect. They were very happy to support it,” she said.

Ohanenye also revealed that she was dismissed as minister shortly after the donations, less than two weeks after raising over N200 million for her projects.

“Unfortunately, not up to two weeks after the donations, I was sacked. When that happened, there was no way I could use that money. I asked the secretary in charge to write to the bank to do a reversal of the funds,” she added.

In October, Ohanenye was among five ministers dismissed by President Tinubu, alongside Lola Ade-John (Tourism), Jamila Bio Ibrahim (Youth Development), Tahir Mamman (Education), and Abdullahi Muhammad Gwarzo (Housing and Urban Development).

NNPP Capable Of Reducing APC’s Influence In 2027 – Kwankwaso

Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), has expressed confidence that his party is strong enough to reduce the influence of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State during the 2027 general elections.

Kwankwaso, the leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, made the statement on Wednesday while hosting NNPP members from the Kano North senatorial district at his Miller Road Mansion in Kano.

He pledged that the NNPP would diminish the APC’s vote count in the state, predicting that the APC would receive even fewer votes than in the 2023 presidential election.

Highlighting the political strength of the NNPP, Kwankwaso emphasized that the party’s performance in the last elections showed its potential.

Despite starting its campaign late and being a relatively new party, the NNPP had significant success in both the presidential and governorship elections.

“If the PDP struggled to secure just 15,000 votes in Kano in the 2023 elections, APC will face even more embarrassing results in 2027,” he declared.

Kwankwaso urged his supporters to intensify grassroots mobilization, focusing on strengthening the NNPP’s presence in Kano and other northern states.

He called on his followers to stay dedicated to ensuring the party’s success in future elections.

The visit by the NNPP delegates, led by Alhaji Abdul Bichi, was also an opportunity for them to reaffirm their loyalty to Kwankwaso.

Bichi, who is from the same constituency as the former Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Abdullahi Baffa Bichi, explained that they had distanced themselves from the former SSG after his removal from office by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

“We have decided to part ways with Dr. Baffa Bichi since he is no longer with the government,” Abdul said.

“We are here to show our unwavering loyalty to our national leader, and we want to make it clear that we are staying with the NNPP, not following the former SSG.”

Governor Yusuf had announced the removal of Dr. Baffa Bichi, along with the Chief of Staff and five commissioners, citing health reasons.

BREAKING: Terrorists Attack Military Base In Yobe With Drones, After Borno Strike

In a disturbing escalation, suspected terrorists have launched a drone strike on a Nigerian military base in Yobe State.

The attack took place on Wednesday, targeting the 27 Task Force Brigade base in Buni Gari, Yobe.

Security sources noted that the terrorists used three fighter drones in their assault.

However, the Nigerian soldiers stationed at the base were able to respond swiftly, shooting down all three drones before they could inflict any significant damage.

According to a source, “It appears the use of drones is becoming the new tactic for these terrorists. The attack occurred around 5 pm, but our soldiers were alert and managed to shoot down all three drones as soon as they heard the unusual sound.”

This latest drone attack follows a similar assault on a military base in Borno State, which occurred just two days earlier.

On Monday, six soldiers were injured after terrorists launched a drone strike on the Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Wajiroko, Damboa Local Government Area, Borno.

The attack was confirmed by a military signal, which also noted that a gun truck belonging to the army was damaged.

The military communication further detailed the incident, saying, “At about 231300A Dec 24, terrorists launched an attack using mortars and small arms fire on troops at FOB Wajiroko. The troops repelled the attack, forcing the terrorists to withdraw in disarray. Shortly after, at about 231323A Dec 24, the base came under another attack using multiple armed drones carrying locally fabricated grenades. Troops observed up to four different armed drones. Casualties included five soldiers injured and one gun truck damaged.”

The security situation in the area remains tense, with the military confirming that the morale of the troops remains high despite the unpredictable and ongoing threat from the insurgents.

The rise of drone warfare marks a concerning new phase in the nearly 14-year-long battle between the Nigerian military and insurgents in the Northeast.

The use of drones by these groups, including Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), is increasing, further complicating the military’s response to the insurgency.
