Four Killed As Bandits Wreak Havoc In Niger Village

Bandits have killed at least four people in Damala village, located in the Woko district of Borgu Local Government Area, Niger State.

The attack occurred in the early hours of Saturday, January 10, just a week after gunmen killed 42 residents across several communities in Borgu and neighbouring Agwara LGAs.

The Niger State Police Command confirmed the incident to Channels Television on Sunday.

Command’s Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Wasiu Abiodun, said the attackers stormed the village, rustled an unspecified number of cattle, killed four residents, and set several shops ablaze before fleeing the scene.

Security forces promptly responded to the raid, Abiodun added, with a clearance operation currently ongoing.

Monitoring has been intensified in the area to prevent further attacks and protect residents.

The police assured the public that efforts to apprehend the perpetrators and restore normalcy remain a top priority.

Bandits have frequently targeted villages in the North-Central and North-West regions, often carrying out kidnappings for ransom and looting communities.

Niger State has been among the hardest hit, alongside Kaduna, Benue, Plateau, Kebbi, and Zamfara states.

In November, armed gangs abducted over 250 students and staff from a Catholic school in Niger State.

Authorities later released the victims in two batches, without confirming if a ransom was paid.

The recent attack in Damala occurred less than 20 kilometres from Papiri village, where the school abduction took place.

Local church authorities reported a higher death toll from Saturday’s raid, claiming more than 40 fatalities.

“Reports indicate the bandits operated for hours with no security presence,” the Catholic Church in Kontagora stated on Facebook.

Nigeria faces multiple security challenges, ranging from jihadist insurgency and banditry to farmer-herder conflicts and separatist violence.

Information Minister, Mohammed Idris, highlighted the indiscriminate nature of the Damala attack

“Those killed and those abducted were traders, farmers, and schoolchildren from both Muslim and Christian backgrounds.”

Recent violent incidents include a suspected suicide bombing on Christmas Eve in Borno State, which killed at least five people at a mosque.

The United States has criticised Nigeria for its handling of security, claiming that some attacks target Christians, though Nigerian authorities reject such characterisations.

Washington carried out airstrikes on militants linked to the Islamic State group on Christmas Day, which Nigeria later approved.

In response to growing insecurity, President Bola Tinubu pledged a national security revamp and increased defence spending in the 2026 budget.

In early December, he replaced the defence minister, appointing a former top military commander to lead the ministry.

Photo Of Peter Obi Greeting Atiku On Bent Knees Sparks Online Debate

A photograph of Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, shaking hands with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has continued to stir reactions on social media after it was shared online by Atiku himself.

The image, which shows Obi slightly bent while greeting Atiku, has been interpreted by some Nigerians as a gesture of submission or deference.

Critics argue that the posture is unbecoming of a politician aspiring for the nation’s highest office, with some describing it as evidence of low self-confidence or political weakness.

Several commentators have also suggested that the image raises questions about Obi’s ability to assert himself politically, particularly within the newly formed African Democratic Congress (ADC), where both politicians are members.

However, activist and public commentator Maduabuchi Idam dismissed these interpretations as superficial, urging Nigerians to focus on competence and leadership qualities rather than body language.

In a statement made available to journalists, Idam acknowledged that a casual observer might draw negative conclusions from the photograph but warned against overinterpreting symbolism from a single moment.

According to him, Obi has consistently projected himself as a calm, disciplined, and principled leader, emphasizing that gentleness should not be mistaken for weakness.

“This picture has been trending since it appeared online today after being shared by Alhaji Atiku Abubakar himself. The attention it has received is unsurprising. It shows Mr. Peter Obi greeting Atiku Abubakar almost on his bent knees, a gesture often associated with sycophancy or favour-seeking.

“Peter Obi has always presented himself as gentle yet firm, calm yet resolute. His demeanor has never suggested aggression, and that should not be used to undermine his capacity for leadership,” Idam said.

He added that Nigeria’s political challenges are not the result of a lack of assertive personalities but rather the repeated imposition of unsuitable leaders on the nation.

Idam urged Nigerians to encourage authenticity among political actors instead of rewarding pretence, stressing that leadership should be judged by competence, capacity and integrity rather than optics.

“Nigeria’s problem is not the absence of haughty characters but the habit of forcing square pegs into round holes,” he stated.

Enugu; A Christmas In A Clean City By Francis Ede

A thing of beauty is a joy forever.

Its loveliness increases; it will never

Pass into nothingness, says one of the world’s best poets of all times, John Keats.

There is no doubt that the beauty and loveliness of Enugu State increases every day courtesy of the administration of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mba, a man who has taken it upon himself to bring back the glory of Enugu the capital of Eastern Nigeria and the prime city of Igbo tribe the world over to its pristine and alluring nature to which the planners of the city the white man and the subsequent administration of Michael Okpara left it.

There is also no doubt that a significant level of decay had set in before now in matters of environmental sanitation and infrastructure development and stability in the coal city arrising from neglect and or maladministration of some previous governments in the state before His Excellency, Barr Peter Mbah came to the rescue.

Even as activities of the Christmas and new year festivities receed to minimal level after the high tempo engagements that were the hallmarks of the season as many of those who returned home from across the globe make haste to get back to where they earn their living, yet many of them are going back with tales of joy of what the new Enugu has become.

And it is not just story of the city with paved roads and street lights that shine brilliantly all night long, nor just about our roundabouts and squares adorned with statues commissioned from the best sculptors around.

Which in turn has given exposure and patronage to the vast array of talents we have in that field of artisc endeavour across the state.

Others will definitely be going back with the news of how easy and comfortable the transportation system in Enugu State generally has become courtesy of the Governor Mbah administration which provided over 100 CNG ultramodern Transit Buses.

In addition new bus terminals are built in key locations with modern facilities to improve travel convenience and efficiency.

On the other hand, Enugu Air has about 6 brand new planes in its fleet aimed at boosting trade and tourism to the state.

Nor is the flurry of goodnews coming out of Enugu spent, many are happy with what Governor Peter Mbah has done with the International Conference Center in Enugu which has carved a special brand for itself within a few months of its commissioning and has become a toast to conference organizers across the country.

This has not only enhanced tourism in the state but contributes significantly to our revenue portfolio.

They will tell the story of the majestic Hotel Presidential, Enugu, put back to life by the government of Governor Peter Mbah and standing as a throwback to the iconic taste and foresight of leaders of old, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe and Michael Okpara.

And they will relay with relish the coming of the 5 Star 360 bed International Conference Hotel, astonishing in it’s architectural design.

This very hotel when commissioned will end up being the best hotel in Eastern Nigeria. Same story with the revitalized Nike Lake Hotel amidst other big hotels in Enugu that offer maximum comfort and hospitality to the people.

And our brothers and sisters, even visitors going back from Enugu would need no prompting to talk about the 5 Star International Hospital with 300 beds or the amazing turnaround in the services and equipments in the Parklane Teaching Hospital and the 260 Type 2 Hospitals across the political wards of Enugu State, all aimed at providing quality health services to our people.

Even as the novelty of building and equipping 260 Smart Green Schools would have made a dazzling impression on their minds and worthy to be related to friends and well wishers as they provide career focused pathways that align with future employment opportunities for our children.

Water and environmental sanitation have also recorded impressive results as a city once litered with dirts now shines ever brighter and water flows from our taps to enhance our hygiene and to ease our former troubles at getting drinking water.

The government of Governor Peter Mbah has expanded clean water access for the people of Enugu State.

Of paramount importance is that this yuletide brought nothing but joy and peace to the citizens of Enugu State, and our visitors alike as security was top-notch.

If there were reports anywhere of breaches it must have been at the bareest minimal compared to other times. And this is due to the state’s Central Security Control Command that puts all security related issues under focus as they unfold within the length and bredth of Enugu State.

And the motivation given to security agencies in the state by Governor Peter Mbah to ensure full commitment and dedication to duty.

When one of the holidaymakers openly declared recently that Enugu State is entering its golden with premium services of Governor Peter Mbah, I echoed ‘Tomorrow Is Here’ loudly in affirmation.

NBA Calls For Swift Justice As DSS Operative Arrested Over Alleged Abduction, Rape Of Minor

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Dutse Branch, has renewed its demand for justice following the arrest of a Department of State Services (DSS) operative, Ifeanyi Onyewuenyi, over allegations of abducting and raping a 16-year-old girl, Miss Walida Abdullahi.

The arrest followed a court order issued on January 7, 2026, directing the police and the DSS to apprehend and investigate Onyewuenyi over a case that has reportedly dragged on for more than two years.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the NBA, through its Publicity Secretary, A.B. Umar, condemned the allegations, describing them as shocking, reprehensible, and a blatant abuse of power.

Umar called for a swift, transparent, and impartial investigation, stressing that anyone found culpable must be held fully accountable.

According to the association, Miss Abdullahi was declared missing at the age of 16, prompting her family to search for her for over two years.

The prolonged trauma, the NBA noted, allegedly led to the death of her mother.

The statement further alleged that Onyewuenyi contacted the victim’s father in January 2026, admitting that the girl had been in his custody and instructing him to travel to Abuja for what he described as a marriage ceremony.

During the period of her alleged unlawful detention, the girl reportedly gave birth to a child.

Umar described the development as a gross violation of the law and a grave abuse of office, noting that the allegations also include claims of forceful religious conversion and coerced marriage.

Confirming the arrest, the DSS, in a statement signed by its Deputy Director of Public Relations, Favour Dozie, said Onyewuenyi, an active staff member of the service, had been taken into custody for investigation.

The agency clarified that it had no record of an officer named Ifeanyi Festus but confirmed the arrest of Ifeanyi Onyewuenyi.

The DSS stressed that the alleged actions were in clear violation of its regulations and code of conduct, assuring the public that the outcome of the investigation would be made known.

The NBA said it would closely monitor the case to ensure that justice is not only done but seen to be done, urging relevant authorities to comply fully with the court’s directive.

The association also appealed to members of the public to remain calm as the judicial process runs its course.

Abuja Lawyer Killed After N3m Ransom Demand, Family Recounts Final Moments

Abuja Lawyer,

Fresh details have emerged surrounding the abduction and killing of Abuja-based lawyer, Nwamaka Chigbo, who was murdered by kidnappers despite a ₦3 million ransom demand, her family has revealed.

In a statement released on Friday, the family disclosed that Chigbo was on a phone call with her sister, Anthonia, moments before she was abducted.

According to them, the call remained connected during the incident, allowing Anthonia to hear her sister’s screams and cries for help before the line abruptly went silent.

“When Anthonia called back, Nwamaka’s phone was still connected. Her distress cries could be heard in the background before the line suddenly went dead and became unreachable,” the family said.

The family explained that repeated attempts to reach Chigbo or her abductors initially failed. When contact was eventually established, a male voice reportedly answered the phone, issuing threats and demanding money.

“A man rained curses in English and Hausa, threatening that she would be killed if ₦3 million was not sent,” the statement said.

The incident was immediately reported to the police, who assured the family that tracking efforts were underway and suggested the kidnappers might release the lawyer once the ransom was paid.

However, the kidnappers made no further contact. When the family later called Chigbo’s phone to inquire about ransom payment arrangements, they heard her voice once more.

“They only heard her screaming in pain, crying, ‘I am dying, please save me. Send the money, I am dying,’ before the phone went dead again,” the family recounted.

While efforts to locate her continued, the family said they were informed on Tuesday, January 6, that an unidentified woman in critical condition had been taken to a specialist hospital in Abuja.

Her sister, Maureen Chigbo, travelled from Lagos to confirm the information.

“On arrival at the hospital, she discovered her sister’s lifeless body in the mortuary, bearing visible signs of torture, including bruises, swollen eyes and a cracked skull,” the statement said.

Chigbo was a former treasurer of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Abuja branch, and a member of several professional bodies, including the International Federation of Women Lawyers and the Global Association of Female Lawyers.

Her death has sparked outrage within the legal community.

A former chairman of the NBA Abuja branch, Afam Okeke, called for stronger collaboration among security agencies to tackle the rising cases of kidnapping and ‘one-chance’ crimes in the Federal Capital Territory.

“I urge the police to deploy all necessary resources to ensure the perpetrators of this heinous act are brought to justice and to prevent a recurrence,” Okeke said.

The police have confirmed that investigations are ongoing.

The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, Miller Dantawaye, gave the assurance while receiving a delegation of the NBA at the command headquarters.

“The Command has commenced extensive and discreet investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident, with a firm commitment to identifying, apprehending and prosecuting those responsible,” the police stated.

2027: Southeast APC Stakeholders Ditch Peter Obi, Adopt Tinubu As Sole Candidate

Stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the South-East have formally adopted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the party’s sole presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, declaring their support for his re-election bid and distancing themselves from former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

The resolution was reached at a high-level stakeholders’ meeting held in Enugu on Saturday, which brought together APC governors, ministers, members of the National Assembly, party executives, and other key leaders from the five South-East states.

Speaking at the meeting, former Secretary to the government of the federation, Senator Ayim Pius Ayim said their decision was informed by what they described as President Tinubu’s inclusive leadership style, commitment to national unity, and increasing federal presence in the South-East since assuming office.

He cited ongoing and completed infrastructure projects in the region, including road rehabilitation, railway expansion, and renewed attention to security challenges, as evidence of Tinubu’s resolve to integrate the South-East more fully into the national development agenda.

The stakeholders criticised Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, accusing him of failing to sustain political engagement with the region after the 2023 elections and of lacking a clear strategy for building broad national alliances.

According to them, the South-East can no longer afford political isolation or protest politics but must align with the centre to advance its economic and political interests.

A communiqué issued at the end of the meeting reaffirmed the region’s commitment to the APC and pledged total support for Tinubu’s re-election in 2027, urging party members to intensify grassroots mobilisation ahead of the polls.

The stakeholders also called on South-East politicians across party lines to prioritise regional development over personal ambition and to work collectively toward securing greater federal opportunities for the zone.

Borehole Projects Different From Governor Mbah’s Capital Water Scheme – CSDA Boss

The General Manager of the Enugu State Community and Social Development Agency (CSDA), Monday Diamond Ani, has clarified that borehole drilling projects are distinct from the Enugu State Government’s capital water supply schemes being implemented under Governor Peter Mbah.

Ani was reacting to what he described as false and misleading claims circulating on social media by a few individuals, which he said were deliberately aimed at confusing the public and discrediting the achievements of the Mbah administration.

Speaking on the ongoing water interventions across the state, Ani explained that the Enugu State Government, under Governor Mbah, has made significant investments in large-scale capital water projects designed to restore and expand reticulated water supply across Enugu metropolis and other major urban centres.

He noted that although water supply has not yet reached every household, many communities are now enjoying improved and more reliable access to potable water, adding that the long-standing challenge of water scarcity in Enugu city is gradually being resolved.

Ani further explained that borehole provision falls under community-based water interventions executed through Community and Social Development programmes, which are specifically designed to serve rural and underserved communities with basic water infrastructure.

He emphasised that the two initiatives are complementary but fundamentally different in scope and execution, noting that while the state government is driving capital-intensive urban water projects, the CSDA focuses on smaller, community-driven borehole schemes.

According to him, Governor Mbah deserves commendation for his administration’s commitment to investing in both large-scale water infrastructure and community-level water projects, despite the significant financial and technical demands involved in the sector.

Tinubu–Kagame Paris Photo Not AI-Generated, Says Presidency

The Presidency has rejected claims circulating in parts of the media and across social media that a photograph showing President Bola Tinubu and Rwandan President Paul Kagame in Paris was generated using artificial intelligence, describing the allegation as false and misleading.

The clarification follows controversy surrounding an image from a private meeting between the two leaders in Paris on January 4, 2026.

The photograph sparked online debate after an enhanced version surfaced bearing a visible Grok watermark, leading some social media users to question its authenticity and suggest it was AI-generated.

Despite earlier explanations, skepticism persisted online, with calls for greater transparency in the handling of official images.

The photograph was initially shared on President Tinubu’s verified X account and later reposted by a presidential aide, amplifying public scrutiny.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Presidency insisted that the image is genuine and was taken during an actual engagement between the Nigerian and Rwandan leaders in the French capital.

According to the statement, Presidents Tinubu and Kagame met privately and shared lunch as part of ongoing high-level diplomatic consultations.

The Presidency explained that the photograph was captured with a mobile phone, accounting for its initial low quality.

It said the image was later enhanced using a digital image-improvement tool to improve clarity, stressing that such enhancement does not amount to fabricating or generating an AI image.

“The picture is real and not AI-generated, as has been wrongly suggested,” the statement said, adding that post-capture image enhancement does not invalidate the authenticity of the meeting or the moment captured.

The two leaders later joined French President Emmanuel Macron for dinner the same evening, underscoring continued continental and international diplomatic engagements.

The Presidency expressed concern over what it described as hasty conclusions and inaccurate reporting, urging journalists and media organisations to verify facts and seek clarification before publishing claims capable of misleading the public.

Describing the controversy as unfortunate, officials questioned why some commentators drew sweeping conclusions without making basic inquiries, noting that responsible journalism demands diligence, verification, and fairness.

The statement was signed by Temitope Ajayi, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, who reaffirmed the Presidency’s commitment to transparency and accurate public communication.

Rivers APC, Ijaw Youth Council Reject Impeachment Move Against Fubara

The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has condemned the impeachment proceedings initiated by the Rivers State House of Assembly against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, describing the move as “destabilising and unnecessary.”

In a statement signed by the party’s spokesperson, Darlington Nwauju, the APC acknowledged the constitutional independence of the legislature but said it would not support an impeachment process against an APC-led government.

“Our position today is that we solemnly reject the resort to impeachment against our Governor and his deputy,” the statement read.

The party also cautioned Assembly members, particularly APC lawmakers, against yielding to external pressures that could plunge the state into political turmoil.

Addressing claims that the impeachment is linked to budgetary issues, the APC noted that during the period of emergency rule, a ₦1.485 trillion budget was transmitted to the National Assembly in May 2025 and approved by both chambers by July 2025.

The budget is expected to run until August 2026.

The party added that the governor may lawfully decide not to present a supplementary budget, reminding the Assembly that the constitution allows a six-month spending window into a new fiscal year.

“Let it be known that our party will do everything possible to ensure that the APC-led government of Rivers State is not destabilised through internal disagreements,” the statement added.

The impeachment proceedings, which commenced on Thursday, followed the reading of a notice of allegations by Majority Leader Major Jack during plenary presided over by Speaker Martins Amaewhule.

The notice cited seven allegations of gross misconduct against Governor Fubara, including the demolition of the Assembly complex, extra-budgetary spending, withholding funds from the Assembly Service Commission, and alleged disobedience of a Supreme Court ruling on legislative autonomy.

Twenty-six lawmakers signed the notice. A separate notice of gross misconduct was also presented against Deputy Governor Odu.

This marks the second impeachment attempt against Fubara and Odu in less than a year.

In March 2025, a political fallout with former Governor Nyesom Wike led President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State, suspending the governor, deputy governor, and the Assembly for six months.

Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (rtd) was appointed as administrator during the suspension period. Fubara later resumed office following a reconciliation process.

The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) has also condemned the impeachment move, calling for the removal of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, whom it accused of fomenting unrest in the state.

IYC President Alaye Theophilus, speaking during a briefing in Port Harcourt, declared full support for the re-election of Governor Fubara and President Bola Tinubu in 2027, praising the president for his leadership.

Despite the renewed impeachment attempt, the Rivers State executive has yet to comment on the proceedings.

Atiku Has Been Contesting Elections Since My NYSC Days – Datti Baba-Ahmed

Former Labour Party (LP) vice-presidential candidate, Dr. Datti Baba-Ahmed, has called for a new generation of leaders to take the reins of Nigerian politics.

In an interview with Channels Television, Baba-Ahmed highlighted the long-standing political career of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, noting that Atiku has been contesting elections since Baba-Ahmed’s National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) days.

“When I was serving in the NYSC, Baba Atiku was already an aspirant. We contested primaries together in 2018, and again in 2023, when I ran as a vice-presidential candidate elsewhere. And now, in 2027, he is set to contest again,” Baba-Ahmed said.

He stressed the urgent need for younger leaders, saying: “A whole new generation of Nigerians is ready to lead, but they are often discouraged by a political system that is expensive, complicated, and dominated by godfathers and broken promises.”

Baba-Ahmed added that many capable Nigerians are willing to tackle the country’s problems, but structural barriers continue to limit opportunities for reform-minded leaders.
