Edo Gov’ship: IGP Bans Quasi-Security Outfits From Election Security

Ahead of the Edo State Governorship Election scheduled for September 21, 2024, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has reiterated that quasi-security outfits will not be permitted to participate in election security.

Speaking during the Edo Election Security Townhall, hosted by Channels Television in collaboration with Kimpact Development Initiative and the UK International Development, the IGP emphasized the impartiality and professionalism of the police force during the election.

Advertorial

“We will provide a level playing ground for all political parties and candidates,” Egbetokun stated, adding that only the police and other recognized security agencies will be deployed for election duties.

He warned against the use of violence, stressing that any individuals found with offensive weapons would be treated as armed criminals.

The IGP’s stance effectively bars organizations such as the Edo State Security Network and other private-run security outfits from being involved in election security on the day of the polls.

Advertorial

Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Frank Mba supported the IGP’s comments, highlighting that, according to the Electoral Act, vigilantes and other non-official security personnel are prohibited from taking part in elections.

He affirmed that any quasi-security officers attempting to operate during the election will face arrest.

Tensions in Edo State have been running high in recent months, with 95 reported cases of violence, including 35 incidents of electoral-related violence, recorded since January.

Advertorial

In a significant move last week, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) refused to sign a peace accord that was agreed upon by 16 other political parties contesting the election.

The upcoming election is widely seen as a competitive three-horse race, with Asue Ighodalo of the PDP, Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP) as the leading candidates.

Akpata, the former president of the Nigerian Bar Association, will face off against Ighodalo, a former chairman of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group, who has received the backing of current governor Godwin Obaseki.

The governor notably overlooked his deputy, Philip Shaibu, while Shaibu and former governor Adams Oshiomhole have thrown their support behind Okpebholo.

Over 2.6 million registered voters across 18 local government areas in Edo State are expected to participate in this off-season election, one of eight such elections held due to legal disputes and court rulings, alongside states like Anambra, Bayelsa, and Ondo.

Hardship: You’ve Lost Touch With Realities – CUPP To Tinubu

The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has expressed concerns about President Bola Tinubu’s disconnection from the economic realities faced by ordinary Nigerians.

In a statement signed by its National Secretary, Chief Peter Ameh, the group criticized the President for failing to lead by example, despite his frequent calls for prudence and sacrifice.

CUPP specifically called out the President’s use of a large convoy during a recent visit to Lagos, describing it as a glaring contradiction to his public appeals for austerity.

Advertorial

“This extravagant display highlights a troubling pattern where Tinubu’s defenders refuse to admit any wrongdoing, no matter how blatant,” the statement read.

The political group noted that the convoy incident came shortly after Tinubu had urged the country to tighten its belt.

CUPP suggested that had his supporters been more critical, perhaps the inclusion of SUVs for the First Lady in the President’s inaugural budget could have been avoided.

Advertorial

The group argued that government agencies could have easily provided a vehicle if needed, making this budget allocation unnecessary.

CUPP also criticized the President’s decision to purchase a private jet, labeling it as another example of his disregard for public perception.

According to the group, such actions further alienate Tinubu from the struggles of the Nigerian populace, eroding trust in his leadership and the reforms he seeks to implement.

“At least 80% of the population faces daily hardship, yet the President seems oblivious to these struggles,” the statement continued.

Advertorial

CUPP stressed that while Tinubu consistently speaks about difficult reforms and tough decisions, his unwillingness to make personal sacrifices undermines the legitimacy of his leadership.

The coalition urged the President to demonstrate empathy and share in the burden of reform if he expects citizens to continue enduring the economic difficulties.

“Leadership by example is essential, especially when asking citizens to bear the weight of tough decisions,” CUPP remarked.

Advertorial

CUPP concluded by warning that the disconnect between Tinubu’s words and actions could lead to widespread disillusionment.

They called on the President to reconnect with the Nigerian people, emphasizing that only by doing so can he restore trust and foster the support needed to address the country’s pressing challenges.

The statement reiterated that Nigerians are grappling with significant issues, from economic instability to poor infrastructure, and need a leader who understands these difficulties.

Advertorial

CUPP emphasized that effective leadership requires empathy, the ability to listen, and a commitment to improving citizens’ lives—qualities they believe Tinubu has yet to demonstrate.

Confusion As Dangote Refinery Refutes Claims Of Selling Petrol At N898 Per Litre

In response to recent claims made by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) spokesperson, Mr. Olufemi Soneye, Dangote Refinery has denied accusations of selling Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) at N898 per litre to the NNPCL.

The company, in a press statement issued by its Group Chief Branding and Communications Officer, Mr. Anthony Chiejina, described the statement as “misleading and mischievous,” asserting that it was aimed at downplaying the significant progress made in addressing the nation’s long-standing energy insufficiency and insecurity.

Advertorial

In the statement dated September 15, 2024, Mr. Chiejina clarified that the pricing of PMS would be formally announced by the Technical Sub-Committee on Naira-based crude sales to local refineries, recently appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“This announcement is scheduled for October 1, 2024, and will reflect the current realities of the market, given that the current stock of crude was procured in dollars.”

“The allegation that we are selling PMS at N898 per litre is not only false but also an attempt to undermine our efforts to stabilize the energy sector, which has been grappling with issues for over 50 years,” the statement read.

Advertorial

The company further noted that its sale of products to NNPCL was conducted in dollars and at rates significantly more cost-effective than what the NNPCL is currently importing.

It assured Nigerians that its actions would lead to an adequate supply of petrol nationwide, reaching even the most remote local governments, thereby helping to eliminate the perennial issue of fuel scarcity in the country.

“We remain committed to ensuring the availability of quality petroleum products and to ending the endemic fuel scarcity in Nigeria,” Mr. Chiejina added, urging the public to disregard the “malicious statement” and remain patient for the forthcoming official pricing announcement.

Court Orders INEC To Recognize APC Polling, Collation Agents In Edo Governorship Election

A Federal High Court in Abuja has directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to allow the All Progressives Congress (APC) polling and collation agents to participate in the upcoming governorship election in Edo State.

Presiding Judge, Justice Emeka Nwite issued the order after the APC filed a suit challenging INEC’s decision to exclude its agents from the election process.

Advertorial

The court instructed INEC to temporarily accept and process the APC’s list of agents for the election.

In the suit No. FHC/AB/CS/1326/2024, APC’s legal team, led by Abdulghani Arobo with Ayodele Toe and Ayodeji Ibekunle, argued for the inclusion of their agents in the electoral process.

Justice Nwite’s ruling prevents INEC from barring the APC agents from official duties until the court reviews the matter further.

The case has been adjourned to September 18, 2024.

Advertorial

“An interim injunction is hereby granted to restrain INEC from denying the APC’s polling and collation agents their official tags and full participation in the Edo governorship election. INEC is directed to temporarily issue customized tags with the names and details of the APC’s agents for the election, pending the determination of the motion on notice.” Justice Nwite rules.

Advertorial

Wolves took the lead when Mario Lemina finished off a swift counter-attack to score in the first half, giving the hosts hope for their first Premier League win of the season.

Abia Positioned To Become Nigeria’s Electricity Hub – Prof. Bart Nnaji

Abia State is well-positioned to become Nigeria’s hub for electricity generation, according to Professor Bart Nnaji, former Minister of Power and current Chairman of Geometric Power.

Nnaji made this assertion during a visit from a team of international electricity consultants to Geometric Power’s headquarters in the Osisioma Industrial Layout, Aba.

Advertorial

Nnaji highlighted the state’s strategic advantage, revealing that two significant power plants are in development within the Aba Ring-fenced Area, which spans nine local government areas (LGAs) in Abia.

One of the power plants, a joint venture between Geometric Power and General Electric (GE), the world’s oldest power equipment manufacturer, will produce 1,080 megawatts of electricity in Ukwa West LGA.

He noted that this is GE’s first joint venture with a Nigerian company.

Advertorial

“The project would have progressed much further if not for the Federal Government’s five-year suspension of the World Bank partial risk guarantee for the power purchase agreements,” Nnaji explained.

The visiting team of consultants included Nico Peterschmidt and Dipta Majumdar from INENUS, and Rajesh Kumar Jain from the International Solar Alliance, a global organization committed to advancing solar energy.

The team is in Nigeria on the invitation of the federal government to assist with developing mini solar grids in underserved areas.

Advertorial

Peterschmidt mentioned that the World Bank has provided a $410 million loan to fund these solar grids, with Abia State aiming to be one of the first beneficiaries.

Nnaji reaffirmed Geometric Power’s commitment to working with the state government to achieve Abia’s ambitious power goals, including the establishment of the Abia State Electricity Regulatory Commission.

He praised Governor Alex Otti for his longstanding support of Geometric Power’s projects.

Advertorial

The Abia State Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Engineer Ikechukwu Monday, commended Geometric Power for its cooperation, noting that in other states, power distribution companies (DisCos) have resisted similar government initiatives.

He added that the state’s new electricity framework would rely heavily on Geometric Power’s involvement, especially since parts of the Aba Ring-fence remain underserved.

Ugo Opiegbe, Managing Director of Aba Power, outlined Geometric Power’s achievements, including the construction of five new substations, refurbishment of three others, and the installation of 150,000 kilometers of overhead wiring.

Advertorial

He noted that the company has aggressively expanded its metering program, increasing the percentage of metered customers from 5% to 30%, with plans to double its customer base through ongoing enumeration and metering efforts.

Both the Abia government officials and international consultants expressed satisfaction with Geometric Power’s significant investments in the Aba Ring-fence, amounting to over $800 million, making it the largest private investment in the Southeast.
